Starfield has been a fascinating game to cover in 2023 because a lot of people waited for this game with baited breath after Bethesda disappointed many with Fallout 76 this online experience that did not launch well at all and took a while before it became you know I guess good enough for it to be a viable product um there are a lot of people still engaging with that game but it's certainly not seen as among bethesda's best and then before that was Fallout 4 which was you know something people had fun with but Skyrim I think people still see as the last time Bethesda delivered something truly exceptional that everyone was on board for and so there was a lot writing on Starfield for it to deliver especially with its ambition as this space exploration game that delivered infinite possibilities when it comes to that Bethesda sense of exploration and Discovery only to discover that the space aspect hampered The Experience just made the game feel weirdly small even though it is technically the biggest game we've seen from Bethesda and so that was a big aspect among many other reasons for why the meta score here is just lower than Skyrim's you know 96% Universal Acclaim or even Fallout 4S still favorable 87% and then you look at the steam data here steam charts you can see that while there's still a decent amount of players engaging with Starfield the player base is significantly lower than the much older Skyrim and even Fallout 4 seems to have a higher player base and daily concurrent players compared to Starfield Starfield will eventually get mod support we'll see what happens when we get to that point though it's worth noting that even modders certain modders at least are not happy with Starfield and they don't deem it a worthwhile Endeavor to put too much effort into a Starfield mod like Skyrim together moders for example they decided to quit making a multiplayer mode for Starfield because I mean this is from from one of the modders they called the game freaking trash and that the game was boring and Bland among other negative things he had to say about the experience and now if we go to steam we can see that the game's uh Optics uh in terms of public perception surrounding the game has continued to dip and dip initially the game had sort of more favorable reviews and negative and then we got to a review score that was mixed and now if you look at recent reviews the game is sitting at a score of mostly negative from 7,476 reviews we're looking at a score of 28% while the overall review score is still at a mixed score of 65% to see this many negative review scores in recent weeks is kind of alarming and there are numerous theories as to why this is suddenly happening it might be a case of people are now getting to a point where they've experienced enough of the game maybe we're now seeing an influx of people people who have officially determined like okay I've really given this game a chance I've played a campaign for hours and hours and I've tried to search for the fun factor in this and you know it's just not a game that delivered on its Ambitions it's also worth noting that Starfield is seeing a significant sale right now with a 30% price reduction so maybe more people have been getting this game and with the initial glow and hype of the game dying down and people may be looking at this more objectively especially with how much they have been cautioned about this game they're experiencing a lot of the flaws that people have been pointing out and maybe there's a general agreement that you know even if you are you know on some level enjoying this experience it is still very much flawed and that there are some aspects that regress in this title compared to even past older Bethesda experiences now speaking of significant sales that brings us to the sponsor of today's video Factor who are focused on delivering right to your doorstep fresh and nutritious meals that are super quick easy easy and convenient to prepare So lately I've been spending a lot of time in the gym to focus on getting in shape but diet is half the battle and one of my biggest obstacles is how little time I have to prepare food for sitting at a very positive score of 94 and recent reviews are still you know positive 72% for some reason but I mean it is still sitting in the blue and even Fallout 4 is sitting in a very positive place here with an overall review score of 83 and for some reason uh the recent reviews have been more positive than its overall review score it's sitting at an 87 from recent reviews and then things get kind of more dire when you consider that Fallout 76 is getting better user review scores on Steam than Starfield while recent reviews have been at a mixed score of 69% the overall review score is at 75% in both categories higher than starfields 28% and 65% when it comes to recent and all reviews respectively so what exactly is going on here well I mean I've already talked about all of my criticisms Sur running the game and all of the Steam Reviews pretty much say the same thing and we're talking about people who've played dozens to hundreds of hours of this game and they all talk about the fact that the game itself is boring and uninspired sterile and safe the quest themselves with a few exceptions are kind of boring and uninspired not a whole lot in the way of more dilemmas or choices that have a significant impact the locations especially with the way they're split apart uh it just doesn't do the game any favors in terms of it feeling like one giant cohesive place to explore it just feels like a world split into a bunch of pieces and then you have to like fast travel to and load screen into even neon just feels a lot smaller compared to you know what cyber Punk 2077 pulled off so the exploration Starfield is not great um the ending and just the gameplay Loop or the campaign Loop while it's an interesting idea I don't know it's not something that really sticks compared to like a complete narrative experience with a lot of impactful moments that half player agency kind of affect the story line it is just very much like this infinitely looping journey and the journey itself isn't compelling so that doesn't do it any favors while there were some compliments about Starfield like its combat and the ship building and all these things generally people deem it to be just kind of a very mediocre experience big cup of mediocrity says this particular review that was more recent posted in December and even if you look at the reviews that are positive they still have caveats behind it so this one for example here's a positive review that played over 270 hours of the game now 290 and despite giving it a thumbs up they say unfortunately at the end of the day this storytelling just Falls flat uh not enough branching options and they list a bunch of criticisms the game overall is a bit of a let down we're playing a game and once again having to fix things we always have to fix the modders where's the maturity where is the Polish uh where is just the evolution of the Bethesda formula for it to really feel modern and not like modders have to make the game good or adequate in certain respects and so some people even those who've had like an enjoyable enough experience where they they aren't willing to give it a thumbs down it's kind of like a hesitant thumbs up but there at this point with kind of their outdated design is treading on thin ice at this point in terms of their ability to keep up with uh some of the more celebrated games especially in 2023 now it's not just that more and more people are finishing this rather extensive game and sharing their thoughts after having played dozens of hundreds of hours content creators have had a chance to spend as much time with the game as they could and have been able to make extensive videos highlighting why this game is so flawed and among those videos is this one by Niki jaky who makes these long form essay Style video reviews discussing games pros and in some cases games flaws and he covered Starfield in part particular just specifically bethesda's game design being outdated a decade ago and how that outdated game design was essentially applied in Starfield and it felt like an experience that didn't grow but rather added an extra layer of complexity by making it a space exploration game and that made the outdated design stand out that much more because the ambition was too much for that outdated design to handle and he I think he made a really constructive and critical iCal video here that Garner really positive reception and I mean it has 4.4 million views and I'd say it was around that time that we started to see an influx of negative reviews I think it's just a a matter of people having marinated with a game long enough where they can finally reflect and people like Niki Jakey I think they really put it into perspective really well I think content creators like this maybe put into words what people have a hard time conveying in terms of how they feel about a game and when it's finally put into perspective Ive in an organized manner like some content creators do it suddenly makes him go aha yeah that's it and it makes him kind of give their opinion on the game and want to share that opinion on a platform like steam where they can actually provide feedback and express why they feel like this thing that they were so invested in emotionally and something that they were so excited for kind of underd delivered in the hopes that hopefully feedback can be taken for future but there a titles like Elder Scroll 6 you know it I'll be honest after so many misses on the part of Bethesda that makes me worried about something like Elder Scroll 6 and this is not like a controversial video what Niki jaky posted here there is like a near Universal agreement that the points that n Jakey presented were legitimate and so I mean we're looking at a Le dislikes ratio that is like 98 99% approval I've even seen plenty of people on social media whether it's uh players or uh more sort of wellknown industry pundits who are journalists or whatever kind of look at n Jake's video and post about it and say you know even if I like the game I actually do agree with a lot of points that he raised and uh it made people like really reflect on bethesda's game development Antics and ways that they need to improve to keep up I mean their entire articles like this one from Forbes where Paul tassy who reviewed the game positively said that even if I like the game I found myself watching n Jake video and agreeing with much of what he said not enough to like retroactively change my review score or post a bad steam review but I sort of do get the critique and this is coming from someone who straight up like when they started seeing scores like seven out of 10 from IGN was like that's crazy I don't get how this game could get a seven out of 10 whereas I am someone who really did not enjoy the game at all I I was like that's actually a reasonable review score for this game for me might be actually even a little lower like five or six I'm someone who played like 30 plus hours of it like 30 to 35 hours and was still not finding the fun in the experience so I just kind of stopped going back to it I felt like I was forcing myself to play it and just really searching for the thing the hook and just never found it so I un install it and kind of have never gone back to it since and don't feel really compelled to and I think more and more people especially those who were initially like no way this game got a bad game review are coming to terms with the fact that this is a flawed enough experience where where you know they can see why I didn't get Game of the Year Award nominations why uh it is such a mixed bag when it comes to the reception that it's been getting like I also get why some people might like this experience but for me it's it felt like such a step back from my usual enjoyment of PES experiences and I really wanted to love Starfield because I was craving for a new but as a single player experience and then one last thing worth pointing out is how people have been bringing up how hard it is to find like fan art of Starfield there isn't a lot of like Community activity surrounding Starfield so lady amily here for example tweeted and this garnered 4.4 million views and over 72,000 likes it's kind of genuinely insane to me that Bethesda released their highly anticipated game Starfield months ago and I've never seen a single piece of fan content for it no fan art no memes no discussions about companions I saw more about Fallout 76 when it launched like what now to say that there is an a single piece of fan art or fan content for it I think is an exaggeration but it is you really have to dig to find that sort of content like for example if I type Starfield fan art on Google Images a lot of what comes up is just concept art for the game whereas if you type say balers Gate 3 Fan Art immediately you see tons of fan art come up in an instant because people are just genuinely engaged with the characters and the content of balers and the same thing goes for say like Elden ring if you type in Elden ring fan art immediately it's fan art that comes up as the first results whereas with Starfield a lot of it is just concept art there's definitely like a sense of a lack of community enthusiasm that games like Elden ring and balder Skate 3 had again not entirely non-existent but nowhere near on the scale you'd expect especially for a brand new highly anticipated bees that single player title and I think that highlights just how little like interest there is surrounding Starfield and its world and the characters even I think they fell kind of flat I feel like the only real memorable aspects of Starfield are the memes and a lot of which make fun of the game so for example Jee Park pointed out how there was that one bald guy wanting about pronouns he was like screaming into the screen or whatever and that made a lot of headlines and then there's content like this where um tourist ain't bad as far as cos go enemy activity in Thea like that's hilarious but it's a result of the game's AI being wonky it is like a technical flaw of the game and then people putting out memes like this of NPCs having demonic eyes or demonic stares that peer into your soul like this is kind of hilarious and mem worthy but not for you know positive reasons this is something again that people are making fun of and this is where I feel like Starfield is at we'll see if Starfield can kind of win back its audience through the introduction of updates and uh content releases I mean cyberp Punk brought it back in a big way the Optics they flipped around completely with all the patches and with the Phantom Liberty expansion so if Bethesda can maybe commit themselves to Starfield at that level maybe things can turn around for this game and maybe modding tools can help turn things around as well once that's released but I don't think it's a sound strategy to entirely rely on modders and their Goodwill because even for modders you need a compelling enough base game to have like an audience that's enthused to install mods for it and modders also need to feel enthused by the experience that then they can extrapolate on and if that's not there you get a situation where certain moders are like this game is just boring and Bland and I don't want to make anything for it so I think Starfield has an uphill battle to climb if they intend to bring this franchise and IP back from just kind of like an unceremonious lack of Interest surrounding it and I I hope they manage to do something with it because I do think there's potential here but I feel like the game is fundamentally flawed you know what I mean I just feel like the flaws of this game just can't be fixed with mods especially the exploration aspect that you know it's just so fundamentally built into the game the way you have to fast travel everywhere and the way you can't really land on planets uh seamlessly and stuff like that and the way space exploration is just like a whole bunch of emptiness procedural planet exploration just more emptiness and not a whole lot of purpose there and nothing compelling to do there nothing in terms of progression or or rewards that makes you compelled to explore the planet so like those kinds of issues I don't know how you can fix that with future updates and stuff or with mods even but I know maybe I'll be proven wrong in time or this game may very well just kind of Fade Away in obscurity among the Bethesda the big releases but that's one man's take let me know in the comments below what your thoughts and opinions are on the current state and Optics of Starfield and to be further updated on all things gaming news reviews and discussions stay tuned right here on
