you know that's true is it some people think that when you get into a church that you are somehow protected now if that was so everybody would be in church some people don't understand that sometimes the storm gets inside the church jesus never promised that the ride in the church would be smooth he never promised that would be no storms he simply said I'll be with you this is the breath of life television broadcast was pastor Walter L fearsome jr. if you call on him if you trust in him [Applause] [Applause] there are times in our lives when we all suffer pain or grief sometimes it can be unbearable your heart aches your gut wrenches your soul weakens when this happens your faith in God can get wounded as well you may wonder why God is allowing you to hurt during these times you may and he was in the hinder part of the ship asleep on a pillow and they awake him and say unto Him master carest thou not that we perish and he arose and rebuked the wind and said unto the sea peace be still and the wind ceased and there was a great calm standing still in a storm standing still in a storm would you pray with me father we come again tonight lifting empty cups life draws all of the moisture from our lives and we are dry again we are empty again when we come to thee so now let us go to that fountain that overflows with blessing fill our cups Lord and let them overflow and as they overflow we will share with others but certainly tonight we must come to be filled and we trust in thee because we know that there is blessing at the heart of God that no man can limit or stop and so we trust tonight that our hearts shall be lifted in the name of Jesus amen this is one of my favorite texts and probably yours but I hesitated for a long time to try and do something with it because so many have done so well Jesus is so powerful however that I could not dare stay away from this test the question is what will Jesus do if the problem is some element that seems to be unstoppable what can Jesus do when it seems that nature has turned against you what can Jesus do when the forces that rise up in your life are uncontrollable what then can Jesus do the answer is that Jesus is powerful even in the middle of storms this had been an eventful day you've got to go slowly into this one to really appreciate Jesus had been preaching by the waterside it was beautiful for situation I finally got to the Holy Land and they took me to a place where Jesus probably talked it was amazing the engine of the bus was still running but the acoustics were strangely changed so that you could stand in the spot near the water and still be heard over the hum of the diesel I don't know whether it was changed because Jesus preached there or whether Jesus preached there because it was like that but it was amazing to me that one by one we would stand in that spot and we could be heard far over away from the water side Jesus is there preaching and and he begins using parables you must understand that until Christ there was a challenge to understand what people were saying down at the temple now at the synagogue one writer says that these great learning people would stand up with so much of their law burying the truth that when they finished talking you knew less of the truth than you did before they started now I won't be too critical of them I remember when I was a brand-new preacher the thing that I wanted to do most was to make the people leave saying what I knew I have learned sense that the more you study this book the less you know that you know when I first started I thought I knew almost everything tonight I am convinced that I know practically nothing but I only need to know Jesus and that's enough Jesus began to speak in plain language the little children's eyes were wide with excitement the elderly leaned forward their body language suggesting that they understood every word that he said the people who had never had formal education were not caught off God because Jesus talked about the sore with the seed and as Jesus would talk you could look up at the elevated places and see a sword digging down in his back and sprang out the sea so that what Jesus did was to take the natural situation and turn it into an illustration of the Word of God he talked about the wheat and the tares he talked about the mustard seed and the mommy talked the more the people got excited for all of a sudden all of this theology came clear to him and they wanted him to keep on preaching I have had it only once in my experience for somebody to tell me to preach some more usually when I get through preaching everybody is fairly glad but when Jesus got through preaching I don't know whether they had a note to send up or whether it was word of mouth but the message went forward tell him to preach a little bit more because today we finally understand what the kingdom of heaven is love today we finally know about the leaven in the meal and we understand that you may be a tear today but you can be transformed into weeds today we understand and so Jesus positioned himself in the back of a boat as though to say this is it this is the last sermon of the day that's he sat there probably in Peters boat he preached the last words that he would have to say and even then some ingenious people got in their boats pulled up next to him said if he takes off I'm gonna take off too because wherever Jesus goes I want to be there did not something the magnetism of this wonderful Jesus so jesus finishes his sermon the people's minds are enraptured in the words that he said not because they are so high sounding there are no polysyllabic words these are simple words that capture the heart and then Jesus just where he was lay down in the boat on a cushion that was there for the pilot of the ship Jesus was warned not only by a day of teaching and preaching but let me tell you what else wore jesus down it was the criticism of those who were against him I know somebody wants to say well no that was Jesus rigid Jesus never got tired but I'm so happy tonight that when Jesus came to this earth wearing human flesh he did not come as super human the Bible suggests that we have not an High Priest who cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities but was tempted in all points like we are yet without sin so everything that I feel Jesus has already felt he pitched his tent next to my tent so that when I get on my knees and say lord help me there is no problem that I can describe that heaven does not understand in fact I posit to you tonight that it would make no difference if Jesus were powerful and did not understand because if Jesus didn't know where to put the power then the power for me would have little meaning Jesus must understand and I suggest to you tonight that he does the criticism had worn him down the day after day people picking at his words twisting them making them into something else and every one of us in this room has been through it it will wear you down there's one thing to experience physical strength but that mental anxiety is something that will gnaw at you it will wear you down so Jesus now feels the pressure of the criticism but in that ship he arrests and they are about to take a six or seven mile journey across this placid body of water over to Decapolis they're the thinly populated side so that they can find a place to rest and and as they begin that journey you would think that everything would be just fine one writer says that when you go somewhere with Jesus you must always be prepared for a storm you know that's true is it some people think that when you get into a church that you are somehow protected now if that was so everybody would be in church some be with you I I have the privilege of flying a lot I say the privilege because I want to be positive but the fact is that I fly weed more than I want to and from time to time I will end up on one of those plane rides huh come on now you all are you sitting up here tonight looking like you might understand how to handle that but I promise to you that my prayer life is increased while I'm flying I'll have a little talk with Jesus in a minute especially when the pilot comes on with that calm talk you know what I mean ladies and gentlemen this is your pilot speaking there is no reason for alarm however we've received word from the tower that there will be some turbulence therefore we recommend that you return to your seats and kindly fasten your seat now I don't know about you but I'm a man and I don't know why but I hold the seat why in the world are you holding the seat in an airplane if the plane goes down the seat is gonna go down with it you would do better to leave the seat alone and just talk to Jesus but let me tell you something I can promise you I have been on many planes in many storms but I have not yet seen anybody in the middle of a storm try to get off the plane when you are in a boat with Jesus there may come a storm but it's always worse outside the boat than it is inside I'd rather be in a storm with Jesus in a boat than to be in calm without him so when you ride with Jesus don't get disturbed because they're strong that the disciples are riding now and it's a beautiful day I have read these books about storms and I finally found a book that had a paragraph on the lake of Galilee it says that you can be riding along on the lake of Galilee in the kingdom it can be so placid so wonderfully calm and then all of a sudden out of nowhere this is how they describe it I'm gonna do my best I I don't claim to be a meteorologist but let me give a give a stab at it the scientists say that when water is heated it turns to vapor vapor rise and since nature abhors a vacuum something must displace the vacuum that is left by the vapor rising so cool air comes over those mountains that surround the lake to replace the air that has been heated and has gone up so there begins a kind of emotion cool air coming over the edge gets heated lifts up cool air coming down there so then the scientists say something else begins to happen some of the air that goes down over the mountainside is caught on the other side and pulled back by gravity so that it begins to do this of what town that side and then nature does something that seems rather cruel a little twist occurs so that now there's water that's heat rising cool air coming down cool air going up gravity grabs it back now it begins to twist twist and all of a sudden Galilee turns into a giant mixing bowl as though you had gotten your Mixmaster and put it down there and turned it on puree are you with me now so all of a sudden a leak that was calm turns into complete chaos and disaster this same book says that in the midst of those storms on Galilee wind can blow at 50 miles an hour and gust at 125 miles an hour I don't know whether it has occurred to you but when wind blows over 74 miles an hour it's a hurricane now anybody who has ever had that experience of being in a hurricane will never forget it if the power of a hurricane in one day could be converted into electricity it could power all of the new appliances in the United States of America for six months that's how powerful a hurricane is blowing at 74 miles per hour plus it will uproot trees it will tear down houses it damages structures it causes mayhem and this air is blowing at 50 miles an hour and dusting at 125 and you sat at home and wondered why the disciples were so ticklish about this ride [Applause] this is no playtime these hope live in ships but all of a sudden the water is where it should not be water is supposed to stay where God put it but now the wind is blowing sighs most is the word that Matthew uses it means that there's turbulence in wind that's causing a problem in the water so the water is in the ship where it should not be and I don't care what you say about the storm if the storm was sufficient to fill the ship up with water there's a problem because the ship is about to go down like one version says that the disciple said when they finally realize the danger that was that they were in said Matt's Bester don't you care we're going under we're going down you know and you remember that Peter was in this boat somewhere Peter was always trying to act like he was was in control amen don't you love Christians who always want to be in control no matter how bad it gets they can't admit that it's time to pray folk that comes a time when you've got to lose all of that composure and just say lord help me if you don't realize it God will allow some problem to come your way that you can't handle if you could handle every problem that came your way when would you pray God will make it so that something comes and you can't deal with it so you've got to call on him in fact I suggest to you that most of us are in trouble because God can't get any glory until he allows all of our resources to dry up I'm gonna try to preach now if you got a cousin left to call on then the cousin loans you some money and you give your cousin the credit for getting you up if you've got a credit union to call on you give the credit union if you've got some boss who like sure you give him the credit if you've got a friend you'll give her the credit but what God has to do to get blessing and credit but what he does is to let all of your resources run out and when you have nobody to call anymore then abductor call jesus and when you call him then and he steps in on time and I don't know I thought I heard the choir said he's an on time though yes he is when he stops it on time you must give him credit for what he's done so the storm is raging even peter has lost his composure and now you know I've heard some of these suggestions that in the middle of the storm people were master carest thou not it is not historically corrupt you see in the midst of a storm there's too much noise you can't whisper you see some of you have been through it in your life every now and then when a trial comes the trial its noise says it cause it's too much noise for you to whisper anymore you may whisper a little cute prayers when things are going well but you let a real problem get inside your life and you change the way you pray you will change because trials have their own noise this storm is making noise somebody has got to cry out for help and these disciples in the middle of the storm somebody finally thinks about it why are we out here whose idea was this in the first place sometimes you need to ask that question why am I here but brought me to this place and if your answer is the Lord told you to go then you're in good shape because if Jesus told you to go he'll never leave you alone so in in a flash of lightning one writer says somebody sees Jesus they recognize that this storm is too much Ephesians chapter 2 and verse 2 says that the the devil is the Prince of the power of the air that's why when I fly I talk to Jesus say lord don't you let him do this and I know you can call the storm I talk to it I remind him who I know who he is I'll tell him who I know cause the storms I said Lord I remember in the word that the devil thinks he's got power but it is only power that you have loaned him for a time so that we can see him as he is but greater is He that is in me than he that is outside of this airplane and don't you do something the fact is that when Jesus was asleep in that boat Jesus was asleep in faith in his father stick with John chapter 5 and verse 30 says that Jesus had put his power down mmm see you say let's say he's Jesus he reads my I get excited cuz I'm not Jesus but Jesus but when Jesus came to this earth he came to be like we are so that he could conquer the problems like we so Jesus has put the power down the reason why Jesus was asleep on that cushion was because he recognized that his father was in control he recognized that he could call his father and get a remote-controlled blessing come on now let me talk to the brother in a minute everybody got one of come on in fact somebody's gonna be looking at me during this program right now with with one of these in your hand and you're tempted to click me off but why are you getting ready to click me off I'm talking about you right now with it in your hand and the Brethren love it a man is not a man until he has a remote control when to a man's house the other day he had four of them surrounded click make something happen clicking this ok but you see when when you are in touch with the power of heaven as Jesus was he put the power down but he stayed in contact with his father so in the resting that he was doing it was suggestive of the fact that he trusted in his father so he could lay on the cushion because he knew that all he had to do was the prayer huh the prayer it's not like a genie out of a bottle it's not really like a remote control but the fact is that when we pray we invoke the power of God who is in him and I suggest to you that you can rest in some storms what other people are disturbed because you know who's really in control simple things that the politicians are in control the politicians know that they are not in control some folks think that the police are in control you know that the police are not in control the police are many times frightened out of their wit's they don't know which way to turn the only power that controls anything now is the power of you and I have access to God through this powerful Jesus so my question now is what would Jesus do one scholar looks at the situation and says that when Jesus is in the back part of the ship he is there resting on the pilots pillow and if Jesus is your pilot you don't have to ever worry about the storm the problem is that sometimes we grab hold of the controls and try to steer our own way out of a storm why don't you let the right one steer you out of the storm Jesus resting in the pilots pillow can get up and steer you out if you let him take control now the question is what really dude the disciples cry out don't you care that we perish I I shiver at those words because the question is does Jesus care the answer is an affirmative yes Jesus cares there is not a sparrow that falls from the sky but the Jesus does not know and if he sees the sparrow fall then does he know about your bill that you old does he know about your child who has broken your heart does he know about the family problem that will not be solved does he understand the situations that rush in on you and and try to squeeze them yes Jesus knows not only is he powerful but he he's sensitive and he cares and he knows so they say do you care that be perishing now Jesus resting in the storm stands now if you think I'm gonna explain that to you you give me more credit than I deserve if the boat is tossing and almost full if the winds are blowing so that you cannot hear if water is moving according to one scholar so fast that the droplets sting you through your clothing if you are in a situation where during one storm I looked on television and saw that the wind was so powerful that it had driven a 2x4 through the side of a cow that's the kind of power that wind has at hurricane force and we are looking at winds from 50 to 125 miles an hour Jesus stand up how Jesus how do you stand up or maybe that better question is why do you stand up and the answer is simple Jesus had to stand up because that was not the last storm that a child of God would have to go through and the Lord had to show that Jesus is powerful [Applause] what a shame it would have been if Jesus couldn't have gotten up what a shame it would have been if he had the cost to come help me get up there was power beyond himself he invoked the power of his father and the power of God can make you stand up in a storm you know it's true some of you who have been through some storms that should have knocked your flat understand that God can pull you up in the middle of a storm you're supposed to be down flat on your face but the power of God will lift you up the winds are still blowing around you but you're standing you're standing in the power of Jesus and he stands and speaks to the wind John chapter 1 and verse 3 says that there was nothing made without Jesus come on stick with me I'm getting there I'm just kind of enjoying myself so when Christ approached this planet without form and void it was the active agent in creation who said let this be done and let that be done the firmament was created by the power of the command of God let earth go that way and stay let water go that way and stay let hair come and then circle that globe and stay and don't move until I tell you so wind had already heard the voice of Jesus he had laid his power down but he must have made some temporary agreement with his father father would you send me a little remote control power down here because I got me a storm to come I cannot do it in my own power but would you let my disciple see that Jesus operates in the power of his father let them know that just as I operate in your power they - through me can operate in your power so Jesus speaks to the wind and the wind recognized who was speaking wind that was blowing out of control heard the voice of Jesus and streets on brakes in fact the command that Jesus gives is be quiet be mute stop making so much noise I can't even talk you stop talking you stop making noise so I can't talk and the winds that [Applause] and everything is quiet now you know I love my job I really do when when the disciples called Jesus they said master carest thou not that we perish normally when they called him master it was a Greek word I've got to sneak this in because my parents paid so much money to teach me the original language the word that they would use these deduce Kalos it meant teacher interpreter one who guides into knowledge d-does clothes Jesus was one who taught with authority mark chapter 1 verse 22 at 12 years old he went down to the Theological Seminary and they marveled at his wisdom Zacchaeus the Internal Revenue agent climbed down out of his tree to hear the words of Jesus Lord Nicodemus at the Sanhedrin came out by night to talk to him because he was one who he called a rabbi he taught as one with authority but when you are in a storm you don't need a teacher that's what's wrong now we've got too many people out parading as though they are powerful but they are only professors when you get in a storm you don't need words you need action when you are pressed between problems you don't need somebody to philosophize you need somebody to do something when you're between a rock and a hard place between the devil and the deep blue sea at the end of your you don't need somebody to talk you need somebody to do something so when they called him this time in Luke chapter 8 they did not call him the dust glows they called him a pistol tastes which is commander superintendent's one who controls powerful things so in the midst of a storm they did not need to disclose they needed a piste artists they called one who could do something and when they call on Jesus he did not let them now he spoke to the wind and the wind stopped making stop tossing the water people in those other little boats you know it's one thing to be in the boat with Jesus but what else folk doing in those other books when that wind finally stops somebody had been looking hard enough he said come here man let me tell you something now excuse me I got to get the way he was talking okay I saw him in the middle of that storm standing straight some wrongful and he would have been so much that I had what he said but the wind hurt him too because the window and you got to learn to sit up here wondering about your future when Jesus has the power every one of us will find ourselves in some store I'm glad that I know somebody who can tell the win don't scare him anymore be quiet you say there's something wrong with that well explain to me how then the same power of God could make fire cease to burn the three Hebrew words could make lions resist the temptation to eat when God speaks something happens when Jesus stands in a storm he does not stand for himself but he stands to bring peace into your life into my eye I had just learned to drive most of you including the ladies now I I used to tell this with some male twist to it but I have a daughter now who is who is an attorney and she was once in fact she hates these stories don't ever tell her that I did this she to enjoy driving there's a there's a strange lust for driving it looks powerful I remember looking at my father driving in it I remember when I got my license I I felt that I had changed from a boy into a man my brother and I made plans quickly we had these dear young ladies whose lives we were about to put in jeopardy we washed the car in faith and I went to my father and declared to him we are going to take the car father and drive down to Florida well that was a long time ago when fathers did not do what the children told them dad says if that car moves I'm going to be in it sitting right beside you you have a learner's permit son and that's the only thing you can do is learn so we made a deal the deal was that the young lady could sit here and he would have to sit there not exactly according to the law but there was some grace praise God I remember driving and feeling the warm admiration of the lady I could feel her glance on me [Applause] well evidently I'm not the only one else we got down to Florida not a long drive from Mobile Alabama where I was living and we got out everybody else went swimming hi I didn't want to swim I took the keys and put them in my trunks and walked around I was a man as the day went on we could see clouds gathering and finally the sky was black with clouds and I thought to myself my father will never let me drive home now so I went turned my back to the rest and and tried to plead with him I said dad if you don't let me drive home the young lady will think I can't drive in the store would you please I'll be real careful let me drive home but I can happen you've never been in a storm before and he said look if you if you promise that when it gets too much fun for you you'll figure some excuse and and stop the car and let me drive you promise yeah turn around alright we're ready to go I remember turning the windshield wipers we're doing this and still couldn't see well I couldn't see but you understand the pride of a post-pubescent male that drove on on a ribbon of highway that was slippery and black and I could not make out the limes anymore and I'll never forget when that vehicle something large enough to have yellow lights above it came towards us and I knew that I I could not fathom where the highway was I was gonna hit this thing whatever it was my father reached across that dear young lady's lap and put his hand on the wheel from the other side put that car back between the lines from the other side of the car somebody save me and kept us on course without using up my pride my hands trembled I stopped that car and let my daddy Drive like I should have done in the first place I want to say to you tonight you may be in a storm but there's somebody in the storm with you why can't we get enough wisdom to know when to turn the wheel knows when to let God Drive the fact is that some of us have habits that are so powerful that we have struggled with them for years and years and they get stronger as the days go by but instead of letting them go we drive into them without being able to see the way out I want to say to you tonight that whatever your habit may be Jesus the powerful Jesus can stand up in the middle of your store and say to the wind that buffets you stop making noise stop tossing the water leave this territory move out of this vicinity and don't come here anymore Jesus is powerful enough to come in the middle of storm I want you to think of the storms that you may have been in or maybe the storm that you're in right now and understand that Jesus can stand still in a storm he can stand straight in a store and he can speak to the water and the wind and they will obey so what storm are you in what is the name of your store what wind blows around here tonight what water fills up your boat what is it that's about to take you down what is it that makes it so you can't see and you can't hear and you don't know what it really doesn't matter what your storm is it only matters that Jesus can stand still in your store and tell your store to be still there are too many people walking around in stalls people who could be set free there are people turning to controlled substances to quell their storms but those drugs only make the storms worse there are people looking for love in all the wrong places trying to make their lives better when all of this powerful Jesus will come via storm there are people who are trying to get enough money to buy their way out of a storm somebody trying to get a house big enough to live your way out of the storm somebody trying to buy a car enough to drive who can call me and that somebody it sees is there somebody in a storm tonight who needs to stand up with me and say Lord speak to my store where you are we're about to pray for father in heaven Jesus is able to stop storms Jesus can stand up in a boat that's almost full of water Jesus can stand at the stern of the boat Jesus can stand at the controls of a boat that's about to capsize Jesus can stand up in a storm that's about to take a life over and all he has to do is to speak a word because storms know who Jesus is storms must obey Jesus because his power is greater than hostile somebody stands right now because they need Jesus to speak to the storm that they're in Jesus sail word say a word and if you will calm this storm somebody has decided that that when she gets into a storm again she'll turn the reins over to Jesus she'll give Jesus the wheel she'll give Jesus the River somebody has said that when he gets in a problem again he'll let Jesus handle the storm I beg of your father give us the impulse the will and the strength to call Jesus it is in the sweet and holy name of Jesus that we pray tonight let everyone say
