hello and welcome to this edition of Elections unlocked your One-Stop destination for all that's happening in Battleground 2024 today our top focus on a show that brings you news with perspective is coming from Maharashtra where the Maha Vias aardi the opposition Alliance has finally sealed its contentious seat sharing deal including the ticket of sangi where there was an arm wrestling almost literally because the udhav takra Sena will fight that seat where they put up one of maharashtra's champion wrestlers in a battle for Maharashtra from 21 seats the ubt Shiva will be contesting 17 seats have been left to the Congress and T to the sharat Paar Le NCP faction all of it means that the battle for Maharashtra state with a big prize of 48 Loca seats is almost sealed as far as the opposition is concerned how is it all playing out on the ground that's our top Focus after several days of hard negotiations the Maharashtra vikas agari on Tuesday announced a seat sharing arrangement for the loc SAA election the shifta UB will contest 21 seats when where is the Congress will fight from 17 seats and nationalist congress party 10 seats the shivsena UB which has unilaterally declared wrestler Chandra har patil as its candidate for sangi gets to keep it the Congress has given its claim on the SAA UB has given up its claim on B which is now allotted to sharat paar's NCP the Congress will contest from the Mumbai North seat a traditional shiena seat aari Partners claimed their Alliance is critical if they had to beat Narendra Modi LED NDA [Music] con Maharashtra with 48 seats is crucial for both da and India block with the splits in ship SAA and NCP the state has become unpredictable buau report India today so what's the state of play in that key Battleground state of Maharashtra joining us now is Girish kuir editor of Lata one of maharashtra's largest selling newspapers and S zoshi editor of Mumbai Tu the digital arm of India today as well as India today's Mumbai bureau chief appreciate both of you joining us uh let's get a sense from you about this state of play Girish kuar how are you looking at this deal that's been sealed by the Maharashtra vikas aadii is it advantage to the udav SAA they seem to be emerging as the dominant player within the opposition Alliance am I correct yeah it is it is it is indeed UD SAA is a dominant player but the interesting part of the seed sharing is that the signing of the deal is the easiest thing what happens after that uh it will be more important and that's exactly sangi will tell us tomorrow because the Congress leadership there it's upset there are quite a few Congress leaders like Mumbai Congress Chief annat gad's daughter Vera gwad she is upset she has raised voice about congress's surrender to shiena and before charat Paar so what happens now will decide whether whatever these people have agreed does it make any sense from the political output point of view as of now it looks like just only the deal has been signed it success can't be guaranteed you know you interesting you made the point Congress seems to have almost surrendered to the Shiva s zosi for example in the entire Mumbai Metropolitan region the Congress has only got two seats one of which uh Mumbai North is a BJP Bastion uh it almost seems as if at least for now the Congress has taken the Congress has taken the back seat and conceded uh to its allies in the interest of Alliance Harmony is that the way we should see it uh that the Congress is uh has taken the backseat and the udav SAA is going to drive this Alliance forward now well that is a one way of looking at it you know we are only looking at the Mumbai Metropolitan region where uh the Congress is going to contest only two seats but look at Via where the Congress is going to contest the maximum number of seats uh you know the they have also taken seat from the Shiva ubt that is ramt and amarati which uh Shiva has been contesting uh since 19 96 uh what what it seems is that when the alliance talks happened it was decided that the areas which were dominated by the Shiva uh should be you know they should be contesting more number of seats whereas in Vera where the Congress itself is very strong to take on the BJP there the Congress should be getting the larger chunk of of the seats the problem started happening uh especially from uh the areas where uh you know every partner wanted at least one seat in the region uh if you divide Maharashtra in six regions uh all the partners wanted at least one seat in that particular region say in Western Maharashtra the Shiva wanted at least two seats which they were not getting uh because the Kapur seat which uh the Shiva has been contesting since since 98 uh the Congress has taken over that particular seat so you know there the conflict started happening even now what shiven has managed to explain to the Congress as well as uh the MBA other partners is that the vote transfer from the congress party in the regions like Mumbai uh you know it's quite a smooth selling whereas the vote shivs ubt doesn't know how many percentage of the vote they carry with themselves at this point of time after the split in the Shiva so uh the Shiva has uh the leader uh Congress has the vote and the transfer to the sh shsa candidate is happening very smoothly so that is the reason why in MMR region the shivs should be contesting more number of seats and that's why what we are seeing is that uh the Congress is getting only two seats from from from Mumbai on the other hand the Congress thinks uh you know Congress comes from the 2009 perspective where the Congress had won all the seats in Mumbai they had also won seats uh maximum number of seats in Maharashtra at that particular time but that is not the situation at this point of time and that is where uh the MVA partner wanted Congress to get down to the Practical level uh when when it comes to the seat sharing and the main challeng going to happen when yeah but the Congress seems to have accepted that you know that is interesting that the Congress seems to have accepted at least for now a second role remember there are assembly elections in Maharashtra in September October and then the josling could get even fiercer but Girish kuar you know all the focus is at the moment on the MBA but the mahati itself they've not announced all their candidates either it almost seems as if both these alliances are struggling to come to terms with a with accommodating the interests of so many conflicting Ambitions correct correct and it's not only the names of the candidates mahui is even much behind than the MBA because it hasn't been able to decide the seat sharing also the critical issue is of tan there are quite a few constitu icies where where BJP thinks it's stronger say nashik for example it wants chagan bbal to contest against the VES of akat shind so there are there are lots of wheel within wheels and every wheel is having some kind of a friction with the other wheel though they are all rotating in in in different directions so this is this is a serious problem as far as this mahui is concerned so is it seat by seat would I be right to tell our viewers from across India that Maharashtra is the one state where it is a literally a SE by seat battle 48 seats but there are no visible Trends unlike many other states yeah that that's exactly Mahar is important for you know because after utar Pradesh we have 48 seats and it's difficult to predict there are so many players at least say five or six players in important constituencies so margin will be very less you don't know the outcome what it will be so deciding and taking views and and and kind of a extrapolating or or ball getting it's going to be very difficult and no one knows the problem in Maharashtra is now is that there are so many lose kind of a flying objects you know so if you deny somebody something he immediately is in the other party and that party is willing to offer so it's it's it's like free for all kind of a situation in Maharashtra it it makes political scenario very very complex s zosi Girish kuar we'll keep tracking Maharashtra with with you and as our experts uh yes s you want to say something 30 seconds I just have 30 seconds go ahead well I I just wanted to add one bit you know of course it's seat to seat in Maharashtra that's very clear interestingly this is the time when the election will be fought on the arithmetic and the candidate the the you know the alliance which will get the uh the arithmetic of that particular constituency and the candidate right is going to win that constittution and that is the reason why mahui is taking a lot of time they have not yet been able to finalize their candidate from South Mumbai not from the north uh West Mumbai not from the nask not from uh ratnagiri where they you know the BJP is uh ready to put up Naran r as a loka candidate so this time the Maharashtra election is not only on the Modi Factor but also the right arithmetic and the right candidate and that's why it has become very tricky and difficult to predict at this point of time and a key element of that aritic is vote transfer will for example the Shiva voter be ready to vote for a congress candidate will for example a BJP voter be ready to vote for an Ajit Paar candidate all of these factors will play out fascinating the way Maharashtra is looking at the moment it's a Maha mess if I may call it a mirror cracked as some others would call it Girish kuer and S zosi appreciate you joining me here on the elections unlocked let's now unlock the election of the Union territory of Jammu and Kashmir remember this is a five phase loksabha election and like Maharashtra Jammu and Kashmir is also expected to hold assembly elections a few months after the Lo SAA elections which is why there's a frenzied fight here there are just five seats between the valley and uh uh jamu and remember there's also the one seat of ladak but for every seat there is a battle going on and here too you're finding that the India Alliance has finally got some kind of its act together the National Conference and the Congress have announced a seat sharing formula leaving the other party in the India Alliance the people's Democratic party of mbuba Muti out two seats of jamu and one of ladak have gone to the Congress while the National Conference will contest three seats from the Kashmir Valley the big question now is Will Omar Abdullah himself choose to contest from Shri nagar it's a seat that has been with his father Faruk Abdullah what happens this time take a look at this report five seats of Jammu and Kashmir will vote in five phases this would be the first election in the region since the abrogation of article 370 in 2019 former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State Omar Abdullah hopes that people will respond through vote um [Music] the two major parties of the Union territory National Conference and people Democratic party are part of India alliance with Congress PDP has already announced its candidate list while seat share formula between NC and Congress got finalized on 8th of April naal conference former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir State meba Muti of PDP is contesting 2024 Loa polls from a stronghold of anantnag another former Jammu Kashmir chief Minister gulam Nabi aad of dpap though has been nominated by his party to contest against PDP supro now seems to be in two minds command National Conference Chief and another former Chief Minister of the Earth's wild State Faruk Abdullah has decided to stay away from contesting this elections he's busy campaigning this leaves the seat of Shri nagar open speculations arrive whether his son and former Chief Minister of the region Omar Abdullah will choose to contest from the capital of the Union territory Bureau report India today okay joining me now to understand what's happening in Jammu and Kashmir Sunil G bhat correspondent based in Jammu appreciate you joining us uh Sunil what's the sense you get from this India Alliance leaving out the PDP tying up the Congress tying up with uh uh the National Conference gulam Nabi aad also set to contest makes sense for us give us the big picture as it's emerging in this big election in Jammu and Kashmir well Raj after the abrogation of article 370 and 358 all these Regional you know political parties in jam and Kashmir had come together and they had said that they will fight together and they will work for the restoration of article 370 and 35a but Raj much water has flown down the Vasa since then and now you know there is clear split within the India block parties in Jammu and Kashmir you know there have been rallies that were you know held uh in other parts of the country where mahabuba Muti attended those rallies Faruk Abdullah attended those rallies and they said that they were going to you know fulfill the agenda of the India Alliance but on ground there is a clear split and PDP you know was eyeing um the anag seat PDP wanted that this seat should be given to them but National Conference did not concede any ground National Conference made it clear that they were going going to fight on three Loa seats on which they won last time uh so the Congress had no option and that is why the Congress saw a better deal they thought that National allying with the national conference is going to benefit them and that is why there is some understanding that was that has you know emerged between the national conference and the and the congress party National Conference is going to contest from Shri nagar baramula and anag and Congress is contesting from jamu udhampur and ladak Congress has already you know announced it candidate for jamu and udhampur National Conference has announced cidate from essentially you're saying Congress focuses on the jamu region and ladak the national conferences becomes the premier player within the India Alliance as far as the Kashmir Valley is concerned meua Muti has already made it clear she will contest anant nag so there you have two India Ally potentially in a face tof face contest in anant we'll see how all that plays out these are all tough states to make sense of but Sunil GB explaining the basis of that Alliance thanks very much for joining me okay let's give you a quick wrap of what else is making the headlines on the election Trail a big setback for Delhi chief minister Arin krial Delhi high court today dismissed the chief Minister's plea on claiming that his arrest was uh illegal he the court said the enforcement directorate had acted as per the law sources now say krial will move the super Supreme Court challenging his arrest but remains in judicial custody the election commission has cracked the whip yet again on sexist Nas po body has sent a show cause notice to the congress's Rand surala for an alleged sexist slur against the bjp's imma Malini it's the trinamul Congress versus the Delhi police the TMC finally called off a 24-hour dhna claiming misuse of central agencies the Delhi police claim the TMC Nas were using the police station to play politics Union home minister uh Amit sha was in tinsukia campaigning for Union Minister sarbananda sonowal tinsukia as part of diar constituency assam's Chief Minister hant bishwas
