sanctuary while we're recording this message uh my two youngest children and a few staff members and the like and so you may hear a few amens since i can't hear yours i needed to hear mine and so i'm grateful for them but let's go ahead and let's turn our attention to the word of god it's time for the word grab your bible and turn with me in the new testament to peter's first epistle to the believers first peter chapter five first peter chapter five first peter chapter five and i just want you to know that even though you may not be in the sanctuary it's okay for you to stand when it's time to read the word in preparation for hearing the word proclaimed in our hearing and if you choose not to stand or are not able to do so the lord knows your heart and the lord will bless you nonetheless first peter chapter five i want to read it initially from the english standard version the esv and then i want to read it from the new living translation from which uh the majority of this message will be taken in the english standard version first peter chapter 5 verses 10 and 11 are translated from the original greek new testament in this manner after you have suffered a little while the god of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory in christ will himself restore confirm strengthen and establish you to him be the dominion forever and ever amen in the new living translation the word of god is translated from the greek new testament in this manner in his kindness god called you to share in his eternal glory by means of christ jesus so after you have suffered a little while he will restore support and strengthen you and he will place you on a firm foundation all power to him forever amen you may be seated if you were standing in the presence of the lord our god the grass withers and the flower fades but the word of god shall stand for ever there is a line in this passage that beckons for our homological attention on this lord's day and it's that line that says and after you have suffered a little while and after you have suffered a little while and after you have suffered a little while i ask you to pray with me and for me as i've asked the holy ghost to anoint me afresh as i follow his guidance and i want to preach on this lord's day from this thought the after effect the after effect and after you have suffered a little while then the lord will restore support and strengthen you and he will place you on a firm foundation the after effect i ask you to keep your bibles open do your best not to go to sleep i don't want you to accuse me of making anything up the after effect as 21st century readers of scripture it is quite easy to read and view the bible as an ancient text about people to whom we cannot relate [Music] when we read scripture we can easily miss the contextual connection that we share with those to whom the bible was originally written that is why it is critical for us to always pause to identify what german scholars have dubbed the sitsim laban that is the situation in life of the first recipients of god's holy word for therein we will find the commonalities that we share in life and more importantly the hope that we need for this life our common though distinct experiences should pique our interest and open us up to the relevance of god's word for us in our time just as it was relevant for the first recipients in their time the epistle of first peter is written by the apostle to offer hope to hurting believers you should already see commonality between them and us just from that truth this epistle was written by the apostle to offer hope to hurting believers these believers had experienced unbelievable loss they were scattered to different parts of the region due to growing societal persecution these disciples of jesus christ were part of the first century diaspora and they had lost their homes they had lost employment they had lost families they had lost threats that had come to them and caused them to lose even much more they were experiencing uncertainty and anxiousness tension troublesome experiences in their own minds and emotions they felt threatened and they were battling despair again i asked can you yet identify with this group that first received this letter because you and i know what it is to lose homes and lose employment and to lose families we know what it is to be uncertain to be anxious to be tense to be troubled to find ourselves experiencing threats and battling despair while the physical persecution of christians under the roman emperor nero had not yet ensued these believers suffered ostracization from the marketplace and separation from others in the fellowship and while the particularities of our sufferings and theirs are quite distinct you and i going through an unprecedented global pandemic and a consequential exacerbation of common suffering find ourselves in a similar situation where we need the same thing that these first century believers needed as well we need as they needed hope and assurance that ultimately comes from the lord via the word of god i don't know about you today but i'm willing to admit even as the proclaimer of god's word that i need like we need hope and assurance even in the midst of these trying times and the word of god offers us the hope and the assurance that we need peter writes under the inspiration of the holy ghost to offer them and us this needed hope and assurance he does this by alerting them and us to what i call the after effect the after effect he introduces it with these words they're in your bible i pray that your bible is open and you're not going to sleep i don't want you to accuse me of making anything up these are his words and after you have suffered a little while and after you have suffered a little while the word after is packed with promise and power that's why you can never read the bible too quickly because you will run by something that was trying to arrest you peter says and after he never tells them that they will not suffer by now all believers should be quite sober amidst our global pandemic we should be at a place where we are no longer fooled into hope by those supposed prophets that wanted to tell us that this was not really going to get any worse that this situation was going to be over in the blink of an eye no no no peter doesn't say you won't have to suffer he doesn't say that you won't have to suffer the great news however is that you will get to after your suffering now i'm trying to contain myself because in my study this shouted me personally the fact that peter says under the inspiration of the holy ghost and after you have suffered a little while says that god's going to make sure you get to the after now that ought to cause somebody wherever you are to get excited throw your hands up say lord i thank you that no matter what the level of suffering is no matter what the duration of suffering is god will let you get to the after my god from zion this word after denotes perseverance it denotes overcoming it denotes survival it denotes victory it denotes god's faithfulness the only way you can get to after is if god takes you through ought to hear god reminding you with hope and assurance today you will get through because that's the only way to get to your after my god and so peter says listen he says and after you have suffered and then he contextualizes it a little while it's in your bible he says and after you have suffered a little while he uses a durative perspective enhancing phrase a little while this speaks to how our suffering can be seen as a little while in comparison to the eternal glory to which we have been called when you read this text closely you read it from the english standard version and the new international version they each begin this passage in a way that begins and after you have suffered a little while the god of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory when peter uses this term a little while he's contrasting it with eternal glory he's contrasting what we're going through now with the eternality of god's glory that we'll experience without ending when he does this it calls to mind the words of the apostle paul in romans chapter 8 verse 18 that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared to the glory that shall be revealed to us it reminds us as well of his words to the church at corinth in second corinthians chapter 4 and verse 17 where he says to them for our light affliction which is but for a moment worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory peter's words do not guarantee brevity but they do guarantee that suffering is temporary i'll try it again because somebody needs to get it peter's words do not guarantee brevity but they do guarantee that suffering is temporary i hear oh reverend timothy right right along through here reminding us i'm so glad that trouble don't last always you got it what peter promises all the more is that ultimately something better awaits us both later in eternity and soon at the right time right here on earth i pause parenthetically just to say to those of us that have walked with the lord and given our lives to the lord that you and i can never lose sight of the fact that this earth this world is not our home that we all must make certain that we are reminded of the fact that there is something better that god has planned for us and what that better is is eternal in nature it cannot be tarnished by time it cannot be hurt by humanity it cannot be dwindled by the demonic because it is eternal it's a glory that we share with god for ever and yet while we have something to look forward to when you're suffering down here heaven can look far away up there in other words when peter says and after you've suffered for a little while that this god of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory is saying to them yes you've got something to look forward to in the sweet by and by but you also have a god that can give you deliverance right here and now so that when you get through this you'll have the after effect my god he says listen you can trust god to be to do and give all that you need and more in the midst of your suffering situation i'm almost done already because when our suffering will have ended we will experience realize and celebrate the after effect the relevant question then becomes what is the after effect i'm so glad you asked a splendiferous question on a sunday morning because peter lists four experiential realities or results from not just your suffering but from what god was doing while you were suffering yeah peter lists four experiential realities or results from not just your suffering but from what god was doing while you were suffering will you walk with me just for a few more minutes here it is in your bible peter says and after you have suffered a little while the god of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory will himself restore you stop right there it's in your bible first thing that he says to us is you will be restored that's the first after effect it's the first after effect that you will be restored why because god himself will restore you the radical notion of this greek verb is the notion of adjustment what happens is when you're suffering you become maladjusted you become misaligned because suffering takes its toll on you suffering has an effect on you and it can cause parts of your life to fall apart but when peter says that he himself will restore you after you've suffered what he's really saying is is that god will put all the parts of your life in the right relation and connection with one another can i put it another way god will put the pieces of your life though broken by suffering back together again oh god is better than humpty dumpty you remember that little nursery rhyme story as a child humpty dumpty sat on the wall and humpty dumpty had a great fall all the king's horses all the king's men couldn't put humpty back together again i thank god that god is not empty god is god and god can take all of the pieces of our lives that have been broken and fractured and fragmented and he can put them all back together again that's the after effect somebody ought to start shouting now because what this says to all of us is that god in the midst of the suffering never allows the suffering to leave you in total disrepair oh i think i'm gonna preach in a minute when you understand this word you'll understand that it's used elsewhere in passages like matthew chapter 4 verse 21. when guess who peter along with andrew james and john were mending their nets they had fished all night and caught nothing but their nets had been torn apart and when jesus found them they were mending their nests in other words they were putting the nets back together again they were fixing the nets so that the nets could be used to catch more fish don't you ever presume that what you've been going through is going to leave you unusable to god no no no no no no no matter how life runs you god can mend you yeah he'll restore you it's also the word that's used when paul admonishes the believers of the churches of galatia and he says to them when a brother or sister is overtaken in a fault ye who are spiritual should restore such a one considering thyself lest ye be tempted also when he uses this word in galatians 6 1 it's the word is used to say when a brother or sister falls down hurts themselves injures themselves makes a wrong step makes a wrong move that's not the time for you to make it worse that's the time for you to help put them back together again so that they'll know that in spite of their mistakes and in spite of their failures and in spite of their shortcomings in spite of their sins that god can still use them he himself will restore yeah not only that but the after effect is not only that you will be restored but the new living translation helps us here with the greek and tells us that you will be supported you will be supported you will be supported the niv says he will make you strong yeah he'll make you strong you will be supportive the idea here is of having support that helps to strengthen you so that you can strengthen others you don't have to go through your suffering by yourself because god is with you god joins you in your suffering now it can be confusing because we expect somehow and for some reason god to keep us from suffering but i pointed out to you just a few moments ago that peter never told these believers that they would not suffer what god does is god inserts god's self into our situation because of suffering in light of suffering and provides us with the support for us to get to the after suffering the only way you and i can get to the after effect is that god support us in the midst of our suffering without keeping from us what suffering will add to us god says no i'm not going to keep you from it nor will i keep it from you but what i will do is i will join you and i will allow you to deal with the weight of suffering but when the weight gets too heavy i'll be there to help you lift the load so that the load doesn't crush you while it's strengthening you some of you all know what it is to go to the gym and to lift weights others you all have seen it and you know that any person that's lifting weight that's heavy should exercise wisdom and have a spotter the role of the spotter is to be there to support the lifter to be there not to take the responsibility for lifting from them but to be there to encourage them to tell them you can lift it you can push push push push and then when it gets too heavy because the spotter is always watching the lifter oh god a real spotter is never far from the weight lifter the spotter is always right there within arm's reach of the lifter not only that but the spotter has a responsibility to watch the lifter so not to criticize them because they couldn't lift the weight but to recognize when the weight is too much and then to put their hands on the bar with their weight lifters hands and join them in lifting a load that may have been too heavy for them but it still was able to develop strength in them and by the next time they come back to the weight bar they'll surprise themselves with the amount of weight that they're able to lift because they had some support the after effect is that you will be restored that you will be supported and you'll be able to support somebody else yeah can i pause for just a moment when the text uses this greek word here it uses the term that jesus used when he spoke to peter who's writing this in luke 22 verse 32. that's the scene where jesus told peter peter simon satan desires to sift you as weak but i have prayed for you and when thou art converted strengthen thy brethren that word that jesus used was the same word that peter uses here it's ironic that peter uses this word here because he knew what that was like he understood what it was to fall he knew what it was to fall short he knew what it was to have satan to mess with him he knew what it was to go through some suffering and some trial but he also now understood what it was like to go from weakness to strength and to add strength to somebody else's weakness that's why when you get up that's why when you get to your after you suffer a little while there's no time to be haughty that's no time for you to be grand that's no time for you to be sedetti that's no time for you to be pompous that's no time for you to act like you've always been strong and act like you've always been up and act like you've never had any doubts or questions uncertainties or struggles no that's the time for you to say to a brother or to a sister i know what it's like here let me come alongside you and give you support so that you can have strength just like god gave me strength you will be restored you will be supported and then it says you will be strengthened you will be strengthened it's in your bible still in verse 10 you will be strengthened it's interesting because it seems redundant and many scholars that i consulted all agreed that these four things that peter identifies as what i call the after effect really are synonymous it's as if he's saying the same thing differently to drive home the same point so he says now you will be strengthened that is to say that you will be firm made stronger because of your suffering that's why we should not curse our suffering because god gets in our suffering and then uses our suffering to build muscle that our faith would not have if it had never been tested yeah you don't gain strength from easy times you gain strength from difficult times you don't get the certainty unless you pass through uncertainty no no you don't get to a place of peace without having to fly through the skies with turbulence oh yeah you get stronger you learn how to pray when you have to suffer you learn how to seek god when you have to suffer you learn how to fast when you have to suffer you learn how to hear god better when you have to suffer you learn mercy and compassion and empathy and sympathy when you have to suffer and you come out of suffering a different person after you suffered a little while he will strengthen you because of the things that he brought you through and when you look back you'll discover that god was right there giving you strength all the time here it is here's the final thing that peter says he says the after effect shows up and allows you to realize to recognize four things first of all that you will be restored that you will be supported that you will be strengthened and then finally you will be unshakeable you will be unshakeable you will be unshakable you will be unshakable this is the way the english standard version puts it it says that he will establish you the new living translation puts it this way and gives us the more literal greek translation that he will place you on a firm foundation he'll place you on a firm foundation a firm foundation in other words where you were shaking having survived life's shaking you'll become unshakable let me see if i can help you do you remember lazarus the brother of martha and mary once he died and jesus raised him from the dead do you think anything could shake him if jesus could bring him back to life and in john 12 he's reclining at a band quit eating a feast and sipping on wine he didn't have any reason to doubt or question whether or not he could survive anything else in life if you're still at the same place of faith after you suffered that you were before you suffered you might need to go back and suffer some more because going through suffering and getting to the after suffering ought to cause you to be unshakable to be more solid to be established like a foundation to a building where the building can shake but the foundation will remain in place in other words the lord says listen i want you to understand through the pen of the apostle peter that when you come through this suffering after you suffered a little while then i'm gonna make your life more firm solid and unshakeable than ever before it's the same word in the greek that jesus uses in matthew chapter 7 verse 25 when he talks about how the winds can come and the rains can fall and they can beat up against your house but if it's been built on a solid foundation if it's been built on the rock and not on the sand then it will be able to survive live storms come here for a minute you need to understand you're going to get through this global pandemic you're going to get through whatever suffering situations you have going on in your life if indeed your life has been built on the rock and there's only one rock oh i'm not talking about the rock of gibraltar i'm talking about that rock that is jesus christ the stone that the builders rejected that has become the chief cornerstone yeah you will be unshakeable the stuff that used to shake you won't shake you the way it used to shake you because you'll have a firm foundation and so i bid you good day one scholar by the name of bingo wraps all of this up and he says shall perfect is what peter's talking about how he'll restore you and how he'll support you how he'll strengthen you how he'll establish you bingo says shall perfect that no defect remain in you he shall establish that nothing may shake you he shall strengthen that you may overcome every adverse force and this my brothers and my sisters is a worthy saying of hope and assurance because of who it comes from and who it comes through it comes from god and it comes through peter and if anybody knew how to help somebody gain a better perspective on their suffering it was peter if anybody knew the after effect of suffering peter knew jesus had warned him that satan desired to sift him as we jesus had warned him that he was going to deny the lord three times before the rooster could grow two times he had already fallen he had already taken himself out of the fellowship of the apostles before jesus was raised from the dead and yet after jesus got up from the grave and sent the word to the fellas through the women he said and go tell peter also to meet me in galilee i want peter to know that he has a personal invitation so i can help him to understand the after effect that even though you blew it in one season you can come back in another season even though you may have missed the shot at the end of the game the game can go into overtime and you can still win the game that's the after effect that you will not be who you were before all of this went down but you will be a stronger and wiser and better and more mature and when all of this comes to a head and you're able to realize what god was doing in the midst of your suffering you'll have to declare with peter this doxology to him [Music] i'm done now but don't close your bible because peter closes with this doxology to him be dominion be might be power forever i've just got to throw this in for free on my way to my seat understand that when he uses this doxology he uses this doxology in order to fly in the face of the roman empire see the roman empire had brought about what was called the pax romana that is the peace of rome and it ended all of the regional wars and all of the empire was unified and all of them were experiencing better life throughout the mediterranean but the price of that peace was the iron fisted power of rome and it didn't tolerate anybody having any loyalty or fealty to anybody other than the emperor in other words they didn't take kindly to giving glory to anybody else and so when peter ends with this doxology and says to him be dominion be power forever amen peter was saying the real authority the real sovereignty the real power does not rest in the throne of the emperor the real power the real dominion the real might does not rest in the person who calls himself ruling but the real power and the real dominion and the real authority lies in the only one who died on a cross to pay for the sins of the world the real dominion and the real might and the real authority really only rest in the one who went down into hell and preached a revival to lead captivity captive there's no other power and no other dominion in anybody else's name except the one that was able to walk up to death and say death where is your sting there is no power or dominion found in anybody else except the one that could walk up to hell and say hell where are your keys i've got them right in my hand dominion and power might and authority would not rest in anybody else's hands except in the hands of the one who was able to snatch victory from death and make death go from the celebration of victory to the agony of defeat dominion and authority power and might does not rest in anybody else except the one who got up early sunday morning and said all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth good day now children i didn't mean to preach this long but my soul has fooled around and gotten happy because i know that you know that there is a dominion in no other name that's why paul said at the name of jesus every knee shall bow and every tongue shall confess that jesus christ is lord of all to the glory of god the father i'm really done now i'm about to cut this thing off but i want somebody wherever you find yourself to start rejoicing and start thanking god for the after effect and after you have suffered for a little while i don't know how long a little while it's gonna last but what i do know is the lord said it's just gonna be a little wild i don't know how much longer you and i have to go through what we're going through but one thing i know is that the lord said it's just gonna be a little while and i hear the psalmist saying weeping may endure for a night but john comes in the morning do you hear me and when the morning comes yes my god after a little while you're gonna come out restored stuff that was broken it's gonna be fixed when you come out of this you're gonna come out with enough support because you had a spotter help you lift the heavy weight when you come out of this you're going to be stronger you're going to be wiser you're going to pray more fervently you're going to give god greater praise and when it's all over and you come out of this then the lord is gonna make you firm solid and unshakable so no matter what the enemy froze and no matter what life throws away you'll stand up and say oh christ the solid rock i stand not on christ the solid rock i flip but on christ the solid rock i stand all the coverground is sinking sand is there anybody that can thank god for an after-effect after this after the cancer after diabetes after dialysis after the funeral home after the cemetery after covert 19 after being broke after losing your job after this there will be glory now and forever nothing left to say but amen i wish somebody would holler back at me right now amen amen that means it's so amen that means so let it be amen that means life and suffering will not have the last word amen amen [Applause] [Music] amen the after effect and after you have suffered a little while the god of all grace who has called you to his eternal glory will himself [Music] restore you support you strengthen you make you unshakeable and you'll have to say to everybody i don't care how much power you have doctor lawyer judge government employer whomever you may be my god has the last word and i've been through too much i've been through too much i've been through too for me to start doubting him now i've been through too much for me not to praise him that's what that doxology is it's a praise and i don't know about you but i can testify i've been through too much not to praise him praise is what i do that's what i do when i'm going through yeah you got to learn to bless him at all times may i pray with you father thank you for this time thank you for this opportunity to hear and receive your word now god in the name of the lord jesus christ he who is the ultimate victor i pray that you would encourage my brothers and encourage my sisters in the midst of suffering in the midst of uncertainty anxiety difficulty threat turmoil and strife i pray o god in the name of the lord jesus christ that even now as you have throughout this time of worship that your god would restore support strengthen and make unshakable these your children even as you promised to and did it for these first recipients of this letter from the apostle peter god if someone doesn't have a firm and significant relationship with you may they obtain that this day by opening up their heart and confessing with their mouths the lord jesus if there's someone of god who has a relationship with you but they've been kind of going back and forth and wavering because of uncertainty and anxiety i pray now that you would allow this word to grant unto them stability in their faith and that they will connect with the church home where they can be fed this type of word on a regular basis i pray o god that you would do more than i ask and i pray even now that someone who needs physical healing that your god will release it even now in the name of the lord jesus christ right where they are i plead the blood of jesus over their body and over their mind and believe you for great things thank you god that you have more in store and so god will just give you more and more praise honor and glory and we'll trust you every step of the way we don't like suffering but we thank you for the after effect we thank you for what you produce through suffering in our lives that makes us so god people that we never could have been without it we honor you now and thank you in jesus name amen powerful absolutely powerful i'm grateful to god for dr lee i'm grateful for his voice i'm grateful for you listen to me sons and daughters do not miss what god is doing i want to challenge you right now if season god loves you and we pray that god god will cover you and all we'll be well we don't want you to hurt we don't want you to ache [Music] pray that god will cover you and all we'll be pray that god will cover you and all will beware [Music] pray that god will keep you no harm will come your way pray that god will keep you no heart will keep you no harm will come your way everybody together come on [Music] come together [Music]
