[Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Applause] oh oh [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] is is [Music] [Music] is [Music] a reading from the word of god written in paul's second letter to the corinthians chapter 3 verses 12 to chapter 4 verse 2. since then we have such a hope we act with great boldness not like moses who put a veil over his face to keep the people of israel from gazing at the end of the glory that was being set aside but their minds were hardened indeed to this very day when they hear the reading of the old covenant that same veil is still there since only in christ it is set aside indeed to this very day whenever moses is read a veil lies over their minds but when one turns to the lord the veil is removed now the lord is spirit and where the spirit of the lord is there is freedom and all of us with unveiled faces seeing the glory of the lord as though reflected in a mirror are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another for this comes from the lord the spirit therefore since it is by god's mercy that we were engaged in this ministry we do not lose heart we are renounced the shameful things that one has we refuse to practice cunning or falsify god's word but by the open statement of the truth we commend ourselves to the conscience of everyone in the sight of god the word of the lord the hymn for the gradual 788. it is good lord to be here him 7 8 8. [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] [Music] oh [Music] oh [Music] is [Music] jesus [Music] see [Music] the lord be with you the holy gospel of our lord and savior jesus christ according to lord [Music] [Music] say luke's gospel the ninth chapter beginning to read at the 28th verse about eight days after these days jesus took with him peter and john and james i went up on the mountain to pray and while he was praying the appearance of his face changed and his clothes became dazzling white and suddenly they saw two men moses and elijah talking to him they appeared in glory and were speaking of his departure which he was about to accomplish at jerusalem now peter and his companions were made down with sleep but since they had stayed awake they saw his glory and the two men who stood with him just as they were leaving him peter said to jesus master it is good for us to be here let us make three dwellers one for you one from moses a one for elijah not knowing what he said when he was saying this the cloud came and overshadowed them and they were terrified as they entered the cloud then from the cloud came a voice that said this is my son my chosen listen to him when the voice had spoken jesus was found alone and they kept silent and in those days told no one any of the things they had seen and the next when they came down from the mountain a great crowd met him just then a man from the crowd shouted teacher i beg you to look at my son he is my only child suddenly a spirit sees him and all at risk and all at once he shrieks it convulses him until he forms at the mouth it mauls him and was scarce leave him i beg your disciples to cast it out but they could not jesus answered you faithless and perverse generation how much longer must i be with you and bear with you bring your son here while he was coming the demon dashed him to the ground in convulsions but jesus rebuked the unclean spirit healed the boy and gave him back to his father and all were astounded at the greatness of god this is the gospel of christ [Music] oh [Music] may speak to in the name of god who is father son and holy spirit amen where do you normally get the important news and the important information that you rely on every day where do you get the important news and the important information that you rely on every day you get it from a printed paper do you get it from an app on your phone do you get it from social media do you get it from a cable channel on your television what about a man or a woman standing in the middle of your neighborhood and shouting out the headlines to you well if you lived in england about a thousand years ago that is the way you would have gotten the latest news and the latest headlines from the town choir and you know that why that was so because in those days they didn't have social media they didn't have newspapers and people didn't read in those days and there was no simple way to spread news around the city and therefore the town criers were the source of people's information the tonkar's proclamations almost always followed the same pattern he would come he would stand at a central place in the city and then he will capture the people's attention by saying which means listen listen listen then he would read what the news was from the king and then he would nail that proclamation to the doorposts of a nearby inn of course these days we do not have tongue criers and such conveyors of information have no place in today's world and i know that by now you are trying to figure out now where is this strange priest going with this i know well all of that came to mind this week as i looked at the gospel for today because the reality is that sometimes god has to wake us up before you and i can experience god's power and i think that that is true for most of us because very often we need something important to break our cycle of busyness in our lives we need something transcendent to break the grip of our self-centeredness and you know that is why jesus spent regular times in prayer that is why jesus took peter james and john with him that day as he went up to this nearby mountain to pray because the disciples needed to be awakened to jesus's true identity the disciples needed to see just a glimpse of jesus's majesty so that when the doubts of life would nag them when following his lead became difficult for them they would remember that moment of awakening and they would find hope and courage to face the days ahead i wonder this morning whether or not we have ever had such an awakening experience then was there a time in your life when was there a time in my life when god broke through our everyday lives and then god became real for us as individuals did it happen when we were having a conversation with a friend did it happen one day while we were reading our bibles did it happen one night when we could not sleep did it happen when we had some painful experience in our lives did it happen when we had a moment of pure joy in life or maybe we are still waiting for our experience of god maybe we are still not sure that we have ever experienced god in a moving and convincing way but that is all right the fact is that we are here this morning and i hope that we can have an experience in which god speaks to us that we can have an experience in which god strengthens us that we can have an experience in which god becomes real to us in such a way that it changes our lives forever and that brings me to the second thing that we learn from this passage this morning because this passage is prayer prepares us to experience god prayer opens our minds to god's presence and god's will for us jesus took peter james and john with him up to a mountain to pray and as i said earlier this was jesus's regular practice jesus would go away often up to mountains to pray and to spend time with almighty god and the writer tells us that as jesus was praying the disciples were sleepy and the passage makes me flinch sometimes because here was jesus enjoying the presence of god here was jesus aligning his mind and his will with the heavenly father's mind and will here was jesus preparing himself to do some world-changing work for god and his disciples were slipping in to nap mood i wonder this morning how many opportunities you and i have missed to hear god's voice how many opportunities have you and i miss to do good works for god to do the things that god has set in front of us because we were too lazy to pray there is a question that should make a squirm [Music] how many times have we missed what god would have us do because we were too lazy to pray you see the truth hurts we do not want to listen either because listening to god is not like listening to a friend or listening to a colleague listening to god requires an act of submission to god when we listen to god we have to lay aside our own agendas when we listen to god we have to lay aside our own priorities when we listen to god we have to lay aside our own knees and open ourselves to the mind and to the middle of almighty god the word translated obey in the old testament means to hear in the new testament there are several words that describe this obedience and one word means to hear or to listen in a state of submission another word simply translate obey as to trust because you see our obedient response to god's word is a response of trust and faith and to really hear god's word means more than just hearing god's word it means that hearing god's word we obey what god is telling us to do you know it is easy to get stressed out or turned off by the subject of praying and too many of us have grown up with the belief that there is a right way and a wrong way to pray we thought we have been taught techniques and rules for praying but i wonder this morning whether it would change our practice of prayer if we thought of prayer simply as listening to god with an open heart and an open mind listen to god with an open heart and an open mind and you are praying there is a well-known author who has written many books on prayer and he was given this seminar and during the question and answer period somebody raised the hand and asked sir how should i pray and that noted expert on the subject answered that is simple ask god that is simple ask god you see instead of judging ourselves for attempts prayer we just need to ask god to show us how to pray it is the simplest way of receiving god's power and i think that that is a great description of prayer we just need to pray to god we just need to empty our hearts to god we need to tell god that we need god's help that we need god i think that's the kind of prayer that we should feel comfortable praying more importantly that is the kind of prayer that god listens to the other point i want to make this morning is that when we experience god when we have opened ourselves to god when we have allowed ourselves to hear god's message and get that message in our hearts we are called to share that life-giving experience with others you see when we experience god we now carry the life-changing opportunity and the life-changing responsibility of giving and sharing that experience with others on that mountain top this morning peter james and john saw god's plan for god's people come together the great lord given moses the great prophet elijah pointed the nation of israel to god but now in jesus the christ god has come in human form to share god's truth and to share god's salvation with all of us as human beings and just to seal the deal god spoke from heaven and said this is my son whom i have chosen listen to him and that is important this is my son whom i have chosen listen to him we spoke a little earlier about the words used for listening in scripture that they also imply obedience and one which we hear god's word once god has spoken to us then we need to go and do what it is that god is telling us to do so why did peter james and john keep this wondrous experience to themselves because jesus told them to keep it to themselves why we do not know but obviously jesus had his reasons and they were simply obeying the master but in matthew's gospel chapter 17 jesus tells peter james and john to keep this moment on the mountain in secret until after jesus has been raised from the dead well guess what folks jesus has been raised from the dead it's after time which means it is time to share the truth of who jesus is with everyone that you and i can when we have an experience of god it is an opportunity and responsibility to share that experience with others so that they too can know the truth and the hope and the joy and the peace of god that is revealed in jesus the cries you know in this life we do not get many mountaintop experiences in my experience at least we only get a few moments in this life when we see or hear the present and the glory of god right in front of us and usually it's a life-changing experience and we need to ask ourselves this morning have an experience god what am i supposed to do with an experience like that too often people keep it to themselves but that is not what we are called to do we are called to take that hope to take that joy to take that truth the truth of that moment and we are called to go down to the valleys and to share that multi-top experience with others we need to share it with our neighbors but we also need to deepen our commitment to action and service in the name of jesus christ our motion top experience my friends is an opportunity to share the life-changing power of jesus with others so that they too can view from the mountain and pass that message on to others hence this morning what we need to ask ourselves is whether or not we have experienced god in such a way that when we leave this the house of god this morning when we go back out into the world where we have to live out that message whether that experience of god is so great that we want to tell whoever we encounter that we have had an experience of god and what that experience of god has meant for us and what it can mean for them as they live out their lives in the world my prayer this morning is that that is what we will do because that is the only way in which it makes a difference for if we stay on the mountaintop and we do not go down to the valley to share that message then that experience is of little worth may god grant us the courage to descend to the valley and be the witnesses we are called to be amen let us now confess our faith in the words of the nice and creed we believe in one god tonight for us and for our salvation on the third day r is is prayers of the people yeah i got a prayer here charm e will continue to cast his protected hands over them and that there will be peace in that land eternal god in whose perfect kingdom no sword is drawn but the sword of righteousness no strength is known forever amen i also ask you to remember in your prayers this morning cuthbert jones pray that god will continue to grant him healing and strength if we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the
