welcome to corporals corner timber making a spring pole fish trap so stick around let's say for sake of argument that the infamous 72-hour scenario where you're waiting to get rescued actually bleeds over into the fourth or fifth or even sixth day at some point in there if you're not hurt and you're able to walk you're gonna need to look around and begin to start securing some type of food either by hunting and trapping things like that for me one of the easier ways to get food is a simply fish and just walking it through here I'm actually I'm going to scout right now I came across this body of water I'll show that to you in a minute so I thought this is a great training moment right here so why not show you guys how to set up a simple spring pole fish trap with very little carving now before I even get started my spring pool fish trap I want to go in and find a stick about two feet in length and the diameter I want to be roughly larger than the spring pole itself I'm gonna go ahead and crown one end and I want to do this so when I strike it with a baton it won't mushroom out on me my opposite end all I'm gonna do is it's gonna make a taper so I can drive it into the ground that much easier now the sticks going to serve two purposes the main purpose is that it's going to allow me to create a pilot hole in the ground I'll then remove this stick and place my spring pole inside the second function I'm gonna go ahead and drive this behind my spring pole so I can then lash my spring pole to this stick next sprinkle with that spring pole to be anywhere from about an inch and a quarter at the base to about the diameter of my thumb at the top we're looking at an overall length of anywhere from six to nine feet now to last this lasted however you want you could do a sheer lash but what I'm gonna do is I'm gonna do it like a whipping at the end of a rope but to help me out I'm gonna create a bowline at one end so I was something to put a t-handle in and tighten it up so there's a bowling it's gonna hang that right there now the tricks gonna be on trial last almost a full length of this so to do that all we're gonna do is create a loop so there's our loop now I'm going to pull this piece down and I'm gonna do is my wrap around this towards my loop so when I'm taking my cordage passing it through that loop at the bottom bringing it around have my bowling right here on this end what I'm gonna do I'm gonna grab a stick pass it through that bowline and gives me a toggle so now when I pull on this t-handle it should pull that bottom loop up to the center where I have it lashed and lastly all I have to do is just cut this off here and here all I did was cut a why branch off and taper the ends if I go ahead and shove it in the ground now if my pole is vertical right here I want this Y branch in line with that pole I don't want it like this I want it like that and last but not least we have our toggle anywhere for 2 and 1/2 to 3 inches in length and I go ahead and carve a 45 on one end good to go and we have a straight stick right here this is actually gonna wedge at the base of our Y branch and lock in with our toggle and here's my finished toggle we crowned one side 45 the other and then carve a small indentation right here for our number 18 bank line my straight stick it's about 20 inches in length all we did was crown this end right here and then carve a small indentation all right now we're getting ready to string this thing up and set this trap so taking my number 18 bank line at the top I'm gonna go ahead and tie a jam knot which all that is a slip knot with an overhand knot and that equals a jam knot I'm gonna walk you through what I'm doing next because right now it's kind of difficult to grab the camera trying to show all these different angles taking my toggle at the indentation I'm gonna grab my number 18 Bank line and do a Marlin spike hitch right here then take that toggle place it on the backside of my Y branch it's gonna sit right here on my straight stick or the indentation is will go entire fishing line this straight stick now will go at the base of my Y and right at that 45 so once the fish pulls on this straight stick it's gonna drop the toggle is gonna go up around and a spring pole should set now hopefully you can see what I'm doing here for the Marlin spike hitch all I do is make a loop just rotate it over make a loop I'm gonna lay that loop upwards on my cordage reach inside and pull it through and it forms a small pocket right there see that pocket I've taken my toggle where the indentation is and place it inside the indentation in that pocket you pull it tight I think what I'll do is I'll tie a clove hitch at the end of my stick and there we go welcome back that was good to go now truth be told my friend and mentor Dave Canterbury showed me this trap and immediately I was impressed with how sensitive that trigger is you saw that just a slightest tug caused that pole to spring back and we'll set that hook and the beauty of it is that it requires very little carving now I went ahead and carved the toggle and the stick crowned the top of them and it would had notched it out so that on a film it would look good but to be really honest you probably come out here cut some sticks cut a branch or even break them off pound them in the ground and should be good to go and like all traps more traps you put out that increases your chances of survivability thank you for your comments to you support thanks for watching get out in the field have some fun I'm gonna catch you next time [Music] [Music]
