good morning from the garden more precisely from the middle of our lawn which might be a big word for this little patch of grass as you can see it's not just grass though at this moment it's also full of flowering spring bulbs and in today's video I want to tell you all about the varieties that we planted and how we planted them previously we didn't really have a long because there were always other things that I wanted to grow more than grass in my gardens but since this plot is four times bigger than the previous one we decided to devote a little area to grass it's about 16 square meters and this way we have some space to relax or maybe have a picnic in theory because most of the time when we're here we're busy gardening but it's nice to have a spot like that in your garden if you have the space but to make an even better use of this area we decided to plant some spring bulbs in the grass not only because they're beautiful but also because early flowering spring bulbs are an important source of pollen and nectar for insects it's spring when there's little else flowering yet if you have a meadow that is only cut once or twice a year then there are many more bulbs that you could plant but because this is a lawn that will be cut regularly we only can only plant bulbs that will finish flowering about four to six weeks before the first cut of the season so that the plants can store energy for next year's flowering like most of my spring bulb planting this was inspired by the Dutch bulb experts chuckling Thunder Clute I highly recommend her book colour garden and I will link to that in the description box below you can plant bulbs directly in grass but in our case we actually planted the bulbs before we sowed the grass we planted them in November 2016 and then we sowed the grass the following spring which was easier actually than planting in grass by selecting different kinds of bulbs you can have your lawn flowering from January till early April and in our case the flowering starts in February with different kinds of crocuses you could plant pretty much any crocus but I selected three variety in different chains of parades of purple bars purple trickle aura and Firefly and I plant it in total 160 crocus bulbs in this area next to flower is a variety of skill skill emission Joanna and I planted 40 of these there they have a pale iceberg blue color and the funny thing is the plants kind of open before they're even through the ground completely they have a nice scent which is the reason why they are one of my favorites then there is a different variety of squirrel that flowers skilless America which is this bright blue one not scented in this case and I planted 50 of these next to flower are the daffodils and in this case you're limited to early flowering varieties of daffodils I selected two one of them is tête-à-tête which is the most famous miniature no death for the old narcissus and about I think about 1/3 of all the daffodils raised in the Netherlands are of this variety they have this beautiful yellow color and are very prolific with many flowers per plant they're also very durable in the garden will perennial eyes in most garden styles and they don't mind them feet the second daffodils that I planted is called topolino which means little mouse in Italian and it has cream colored petals and a yellow Center yellow trumpet it's one of the small varieties as well the last flower is this botanical tulip tulip a Turkish Tonica which is one of the earliest flowering tulips and that's why it is suitable for planting in a long because most of the other tulips would flower too late but this one is very early flowering very prolific it can have up to 12 blooms per plant and it's um it has white petals with an orange centre and sort of bronze on the outside of the petals all of the bulbs that I chose are very common nothing special specialties which means they're widely available and also cheap for example hundred bulbs of tulip a Turkish tanika only cost about thirteen years here in the Netherlands because I want my lawn to start flowering even earlier next year I decided to add some snowdrops those will start flowering in January already before the crocuses even and unlike all the other spring bulbs that I have here snowdrops are best plant is in the green which is in spring after they finish flowering so I'll be doing it now so I'm going to dig up this clump here which is quite a nice size and I can divide it and plant it in the loan make a hole drop the bulb in and press it down again there are better better tools for this job but I'm just using a trowel so that the snowdrops planted and on to other gardening jobs on our today's to-do list I hope this video inspired you maybe to add some spring bulbs to your garden if you liked it please give it a thumbs up and I'll see you next time happy gardening
