this video is brought to you by  Squarespace oh my gosh okay oh how long should models take to paint  half hour an hour a hundred hours   when is a model truly finished  what even is miniature painting   I leave the stove on hey guys Jay here welcome to  eons of battle I typically finish models in around   four hours sometimes it's a little less if it's  something easy like a zombie and sometimes Lots   lots more and I don't really care it doesn't  matter how long it takes me as long as I'm   having a good time doing it and I also paint  a lot of different stuff all the time and that   helps keep things fresh I have experienced a  lot of different painting and that has taught   me that there are so so many different ways to  paint minis I'm basically always painting on a   schedule and depending on how much time I have  determines what processes I use for example   let's look at some minis semantic Mars Attacks  aliens painted in four hours all contrast paint   with a little acrylic highlight to brighten  up the colors this chaplain and Terminator   armor took me 30 hours all brush work no  tricks just layers and layers of paint and   amantic Vermin Army painted in six hours mostly  airbrush and washes let me finish them up quick   different styles of painting take different  amounts of time at the desk and I'm always   jumping from Style to Style to Style depending  on the results I want and the amount of time I   have to do it in this is really an automatic  process for me I am not much of a planner and   countless late nights finishing up models I was  sure would be done by dinner time has taught me   a lot about what to focus on and what to rush so  I want to challenge myself some timed trials if I   have X amount of time and three identical models  Space Marine intercessors all with the same paint   Scheme classic ultramarines what do I do for these  trials I think two hours is a good solid amount of   time not a long time but definitely enough to do  the job after that 20 minutes that's fast what   can I do with less time to get the same amount  of paint on the models and for the grand finale   two minutes yes two minutes that's just dumb but  you never know usually I would just get right to   painting but this project isn't about just  painting ultramarines good it's about speed   process technique I'm gonna need a plan which  is super obvious but that's just not how I roll   I usually just make it up on the spot baby how  to prime these suckers to get the most out of my   time I decided on a black Prime I find it so much  easier to have my Shadows all taken care of and   then to add my highlights on myself I decided  to give each Model A xenathol of ultramarine   blue I'm not counting this step as part of my  time you all might think that's cheating but   it's just primer I could have done this the night  before or what often happens with me and my minis   months before I actually get the models painted  properly with painting Space Marines I'm kind of   in my element because I have painted hundreds  and hundreds of Space Marines so the two hour   one doesn't really scare me the 20 minute one  does scare me a little bit and the two minute   one well I'm I'm not even gonna think about  the two minute one right now but this one   I'm gonna do all my learning on and I think  I have plenty of time to do everything I want   I started the clock two hours let's go I started  off by airbrushing a highlight of a lothorne blue   a nice light blue that did not want to airbrush  some colors are just more finicky than others and   I had a heck of a time getting this one to spray  once that was on there though he was looking nice   and bright I wanted to introduce some texture so  I took a dry brush and mixed my light blue with   some white and stippled this all over the model  after that I mixed in more whey paint and dry   brush the model I don't like Edge highlighting so  dry brushing is a good alternative now I want to   wash the model but straight blue wash would super  darken the model so I mixed it with lots of water   and a few drops of Flow Away to thin it down now  it should darken the model a tiny bit and really   make all those corners and recesses dark and of  course no speed paint would be complete without   using a hair dryer to speed things along I watered  down some ultramarine blue and painted this on to   make the model darker leaving My Brightest Blues  on the upper parts of each panel I would put on a   Big Blob of blue and then clean off my brush and  come back and feather it out then I did the same   steps this time with the light blue paint I did  a lot less of this keeping it to the very tops of   each armor piece now I made a bold decision still  having over an hour left Nom attack metal on the   gold for this I put earth green and yellow on my  palette I mixed the green and Earth together and   use this as a base coat for the shoulder trim and  imperialis on his chest I used white paint to show   where my bright Reflections were going to end up  I'm not the best at non-metallic metal so I just   picked some random spots that kind of felt right I  painted a stripy yellow next to each white stripe   and then I glazed white over the yellow and yellow  over the white to smooth those transitions then I   went back in with my green earth mixture to fix  any problems and add some contrast now for the   important part the thing that will actually make  this look shiny the white Edge highlight this is   that golden glisten that transforms this from  some random splotches into I Can't Believe It's   Not Gold and you know what else is gold that's  right Squarespace Squarespace is the only website   builder to make it possible for anybody to have  an amazing polished pristine Immaculate marvelous   satisfying breathtaking awe-inspiring Majestic  Dynamic robust awesome fabulous Sensational   brilliant quality website with little to no  effort with tons of award-winning templates   to choose from you can make the website of your  dreams a reality whether you want your own website   to upload and publish your musical content or set  up an online store to sell your unique merchandise   Squarespace has you covered I made a website in  only a couple of minutes to show off my models   and explain how I painted them head on over to  Squarespace for a free trial and when you're   ready to launch user code eons battle to save 10  off your first purchase of a website or domain   that non-metallic metal took some time so on the  Bolter I just slapped base coat of gray and I also   put this on the Under Armor of the Space Marine  then I gave the gun a black wash and after that   a gray dry brushing and a white dry brushing now  the weapon has some good contrast but I can push   it even further I glazed some black paint in the  middle of each large flat section of the bolt gun   after that I airbrushed a dark red all over the  base I want this Marine to pop but ultramarine's   blue is a darker color so a red base should  really make this model stand out I dry brush   the base with a bright red and wanted to push  the contrast further I mixed a yellow to make   an orange and did a final dry brushing with the  Reds already on my palette this was the perfect   time for the lenses I base coated them with a dark  red highlighted them with a bright red then I put   a white dot right in the middle of each eye which  was looking weird until I glazed a bright red over   it and then it Blended in perfectly now time for  some good old-fashioned decals I cut out the two   that I needed and laid them down on my wet palette  to soak while those decals are softening I put   some gloss paint over the shoulders then wetted  them down with some micro sole solution then   I gently poked in front of the decal into place  and then squished out all the water and Microsoft   underneath with a paper towel once that was dry I  painted some matte medium over the decals to Prime   them for the next step I painted over the decals  with gray paints to make the decals consistent   with the contrast that was going on on the rest  of the armor and as I was doing this the clock   ran out holy moly ravioli John Bon Jovi that that  was a photo finish but I got them all done and   he's looking good but man I'm not gonna be able  to do none of that on the 20 minute model on the   two hour Marine I had lots of time I still had to  be picky about what I decided was good enough and   what to rush I used half my time getting the  blue armor just right with the highlights all   where they should be but I didn't do any Edge  highlighting I just slapped some paint on the   Bolter in the base so I could really go hard on  the shoulder pads those are the big focal point   of the mini I really like this model I'm a black  Templar Fanboy through and through but an army of   models like this would look pretty sweet although  two hours per Marine 16 hours per Squad that would   get old pretty fast and speaking of fast on to  model number two and I can really only take the   color scheme off of the first model because I  used a lot of processes that take a long time   but I do have a plan and that plan is to do a lot  less painting I did the same steps as before but   where I used the airbrush and a few layers of  paint to build up highlights here I'm using my   fine tipped airbrush to spray on some spots so  I don't have to use a brush later after that I   airbrushed the base red just giving it a good old  blast then I painted the in-between armor gray in   preparation for the wash I drenched the whole  model in the same wash lotion I made earlier   and with that the armor was going to have to be  finished because my time is already half over I   decided on a true Metallic Model for this guy  I slapped some gunmetal on the Bolter and then   prepped the shoulder trim and gold with some Earth  Brown I was working so fast that everything was   still wet and while I was waiting for things  to dry I picked the eyes out with some red   then it was decal time no glass coat means that  these decals aren't going to be perfect but they   should stick on at least then I painted golden the  shoulder trim and I actually had a few seconds to   spare so I drive our silver over the Bolter  and cheating a little bit as the timer came   to a stop I slapped some null oil onto the gun  it's completely wet but I'm no longer painting   oh that was fast 20 minutes is fast but you know  what he is tabletop ready on this 20 minute Marine   I didn't get to do much artistic painting or  any really no highlights Reflections or Blends   it was just a rush to get each big step done true  metallic metals replace non-metallic Metals but   they still look pretty good it wasn't as much  fun to paint but it was fun to have a finished   model at the end of only 20 minutes and you know  what this guy is perfectly fine tabletop ready I   was surprised by my airbrushes for sure that  let me spray quick but getting them ready to   spray took almost half my time if I had prepped  my colors ahead time I might have been able to   work in a dry brush on the armor or a glass coat  on the shoulders to make the decal sit better but   all in all it is good enough I wonder if the next  model will end up good enough well the only model   left is the two minute Challenge and for this  one I think I'm gonna need a little help Nick all right so what I need you to do is I need  you to time me for two minutes and give me   one minute 30 second and 10 second warnings all  right I can do that all right and yeah give me a   countdown when you're ready perfect on your  marks get set paint ah decal decal airbrush oops okay that's what's gonna be that paint dries nice  and quick gun I'm doing good enough time to dry all right that's a minute oh God all right eyes there's another eye all right decal put water on the shoulder okay that's fine that is fine and the other decal   what shoulder first although the paint's  not really dry that should be okay oh there we go that's a decal  right there squish it down laughs two minutes was dumb this model arguably is not  done but this test was less about the outcome and   more about the experience this was the first time  painting a model where I felt true fear it was   a Thrill Ride start to finish if I had more time  this model would have ended up exactly like the 20   minute model I mean really if I had more time it  would have ended up like the two hour model but it   was a fun test I prepped my airbrushes this time  and that worked beautifully I now have my three   models and I have a special guest one who knows  a thing or two about speed painting hey Scott   thanks for joining me my pleasure I have a trio  of Miniatures I would love for you to take a look   at no problem all right let's take a look here  looking at this first Space Marine there seems   to be a bit of a decal uh fatality going here on  the shoulder I'm thinking this first Marine we're   looking at here took you about 15 minutes or so  this Space Marine was two minutes oh my gosh okay crazy person holy cow I mean can you really  give feedback on two minute paint job I mean   on to the next one here okay oh we have some  gold on the shoulder pad trim and also the   red of the eye is where it's supposed to be on  the eye okay what's what's okay okay I do have   one point of view back here Jay what's with  this basement but what's in this basement it   was a time trial I didn't have time to get to  everything I would guess that this paint job I mean you really surprised me with the  two minute one maybe is this 20 minutes   this is 20 minutes okay nice yeah I  mean this is pretty amazing I can't   I can't really fault it either except  for that base frame my God I'll bet you   all right on to the last one here still no painted  bass Rim okay Jay now you're truly failing me   all right ooh NMM gold on the uh the shoulder trim  and the uh Aquila wow okay I'm gonna guess this is   two hours yes indeed dang okay it's two  hours okay cool yeah I mean okay the the   hugest failure in all three is let's  face it it's Gotta Be That Bass room   otherwise for for two minutes 20 minutes and two  hours these are very impressive Jay I I'm I am   super impressed thank you very much welcome thank  you for being here thank you for taking a look at   these models absolutely and there you go please  let me know what you think of these models is the   two hour model worth it or is the 20 minute model  plenty good enough for tabletop don't don't paint   a model in two minutes anyway let me know in the  comments below and as always thanks for watching
