beast in the u.s national series ryan atkins will take the win [Applause] second place in the rolling mud we have rylan shadag he's proven that montana was no fluke ryan shadag is about to have defeated some of the best racers in this country as he makes his way to the final drop the dunk wall ryan shadeag has bested some of the top racers in the world to take second place here today in utah at the beast for the u.s national series this is hot call son of homie call it's time for hawk call to make his emergence third place today in utah in the u.s national series [Music] he's right behind you you got 20 seconds go go up and over up and over up and over [Music] [Applause] one incredible finish we saw ryan atkins do what he does start off eased back let the other guys go and then charge late to win the race second place the emergence of ryland sheddick ryland won in montana but nobody expected to see him finishing second place today and then of course in third hawk call the son of hobie call now carving out his own place in history as he reaches adulthood and we're about to see a lot of the people in this field shaken up by the fact that hot call is coming well we're standing here today with your men's champion ryan atkins and ryan tell us about how this thing shook out today it was hot real hot damn hot no it was great it was uh i mean i haven't been able to run like at all so i'm doing a lot of cycling which uh yeah my fitness is really really good my running is like maybe the worst it's ever been and they've met in the middle and it was it was good you told me that you were monitoring your heart rate the whole race tell us about it a little bit yeah i mean i knew uh i knew if your heartbeat went too high in this heat and this exposure that way you just wouldn't be able to get it back and like getting like a little bit faster in the first 45 minutes would cost you like dearly in the last hour 15 so uh yeah that was my plan and sure enough i just kept a steady effort it probably dropped a little bit as it went on but everyone else fell off huge so two new guys to share the podium with today and ryland chidag and hawk call what were your thoughts racing them today i mean it was fun hawk was ripping really good he's a incredible runner and uh ryland same thing he was keeper fit out there and uh it was just good running i thought you know new guys you kind of expected to start them to like fade a bit but they just kept going well great job as always today and uh catch you at the next one 300 points first place enjoy it cheers rylan chadegg second place today after winning in montana just a couple months ago what were your thoughts coming into this race did you expect it to go this way and how do you feel honestly i had no idea what to expect um i just told myself i was going to race my own race and give god the glory because like honestly i'm super new to the sport i'm new to running i had no idea where i would be at i knew i loved running mountains but like the first half hour i felt like i was gonna puke so it made me like go slower take it slow and i was just like just god like helped me help me to just calm down and then i i felt my stomach settle and i ate more food immediately thought i was gonna puke again so after doing that after the first hour i was like you know what like i'm just gonna rely on on like what i've got in the tank no more fuel no more water just tiny sips so i didn't take anything in my stomach finally calm down and i was like i found out about this kid that he's eight and he has a brain tumor um and at work we're making shirts for him to sell at our fire department and uh he's only got like probably eight months to live um and i was like this sucks i feel like i'm gonna puke but like that's nothing compared to that it's nothing compared to like my mom not being able to walk a grocery store a couple years ago and collapse so like i was like god gave me this ability now and i'm gonna use it so that's what i did and i was just like you know big booties win races pick up that tire do that turquoise and i was like i didn't win but i'm happy i'm happy with second that was everything i had today so well you put it deserves it you put on one heck of a charge in the second half of that race and you moved up quite a bit over the course of that race what were your were your thoughts as that was happening i was just honestly i had just this mantra of like god's power and my weakness like i was feeling like i was gonna puke and i was like you know what my fueling strategy is out the window i'm just gonna trust that if god wants me to do well i'll feel good if he doesn't then like i learn a lot so i was taking the obstacles chill watching other people's do it the ones i was in is familiar with and then i would just attack the downhill in the flats and the whole back half of the course i was just like i think someone's going to catch me but as soon as i saw hawk i knew hawk was going to do well i ran timpanogas with him last week or like two weeks ago and that kid could climb so i was like i don't the only way i'm gonna catch him is if i flip this tire super fast and if i do that turquoise fast so i honestly didn't think i was going to catch him until i saw him at the herquay struggling so he's strong now i don't think most people expected to see both of you sitting in the 2-3 spot but he was going to win but you know what they certainly will moving forward you made a mark today congratulations thanks man i'm standing here today with hawk call your men's third place finisher that nobody saw coming except for this guy right here two-time world champion hobie call his father hawk first big race tell us about it uh that was awesome those first first nine miles were amazing i was like i'm i'm gapping ryan i was like i'm keeping them all right off my tail and then as soon as we got to the heavier obstacles it was just just closer and closer and closer and then that her horse at the end rylan just blew past me and i was like oh i was like it's over i was like it's not gonna happen but it was awesome it was a great day awesome first race i had so much fun out there it's a lot different than running around the track well absolutely and and it is your home course today and you did have dad out there watching so what did that mean to you oh that was awesome i mean it was great having my whole family out here and some friends from the team came out to support me as well and so yeah just knowing they were all down there at this finishing gauntlet waiting for me to come through it was like huge motivation and definitely wanted to do them proud which i feel like i did so i'm happy with it yeah this is proud dad right here for those of you who don't know and you should know this is two-time you call it three-time three-time world champion hobie call we count the texas championship as well but what were your thoughts going into this race about how hawk would do and then how things turned out oh my gosh i haven't been this excited in a long time that's more exciting than me racing um honestly as far as results go though that that was pretty much anticipated minus you know many mistakes but he didn't have any so no our fitness is right exactly where we thought it was so he's off to a good start that's for sure any chances that we'll see the both of you on a podium anytime soon well since you asked i did get a hernia surgery a couple months ago so if all the recovers well there that's actually my plan to come out of retirement and make him chase me all next year okay hawk who who would win in a race right now oh i'll take him it can be this little dance he's about to become a grandpa man he's his his first day podium days are over he'll be he'll be right here a second right right where he should be the first grandfather with elite podium what do you think about that oh my goodness he doesn't know what he's talking about little does he know just how good i am he's gonna find out though well i think the whole world found out today about hot call so hopefully we see you both on the start line soon congratulations great job happy for you both [Music] you
