i think what we're seeing here is the evolution of what is the fittest is it someone that's a top five percent top ten percent across every sport or is fittest based on someone who's the top one percent in one sport i like battle of the fittest because we are taking the fittest people from all their respective sports and sort of putting them in an arena together which i think is really super cool i think it's more about community than it is about like no i'm fitter no i'm fitter no we all have different things that we're fit for and now we get to share those and i think it's been really fun hanging out the boys and talking about that stuff i think it's more about your mindset and i think the perfect example is this year when the whole world was shutting down and curvid came how you adapt and how you were able to like overcome the situation did did you stop training did you stop being an athlete because things got difficult or did you find a way [Applause] [Music] yes i made the call to pull myself out um i'm professional athlete and so sometimes like me and my coach have to make tough calls like this i came into this weekend with a hamstring injury and i wasn't sure how far i would be able to make it or if i would be able to do everything so um i tried my best for three days and um i'm at a point right now in which i know that if i continue it's gonna get way worse and then i'm looking at like a much longer injury you know i think there's a lot of disappointment in some way um i thought that things were going to be different than they were and i thought i would be more competitive um and part of that is just i wasn't prepared but i think this event happened and like something like this could happen in the future makes me want to be a more proficient mountain biker a more proficient swimmer more comfortable in open water be able to maybe tussle a little bit and like sling around some heavy weights a little bit more often today we started off with the spartan extreme endurance vertical 300 which is basically a can queen the mountain start from the bottom of joe's mountain race to the top 300 meters vertical gain just a thousand feet let's get this body started can you take it uh really bear crawling yeah yesterday we had the freezing cold morning in the sun pit today we've got the rain on the on the mountain run [Music] all channels all channels [Music] kids happy friday [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Applause] so [Applause] okay get some [Applause] [Music] this mountain is like extremely unforgiving vermont's like one of the toughest range mountains in the world just rocky rooty nasty wet you know especially this time of year [Music] [Music] josiah came out of my eyes came out of nowhere like i i like josiah is a beast um external champion kick butt in the swim kick butt on the bike kick up on the run josiah got my great award on the on the wrestling he was out there just out of nowhere just a gangly tall strong dude josiah is a really strong endurance athlete very strong and i knew that it would be really hard to beat him on the hill climb [Music] so [Music] [Music] it was a max effort this morning um and i just got him by maybe 10 seconds at the end there and he was leading for like a half the race come on josiah come on nice work you guys [Music] nice job you guys [Music] it nice job ladies oh yeah hunter job guys [Music] [Applause] nice max get it that was a lot in the trail run on my first lap i think there was like a really sharp rock that was hidden under a bunch of leaves um i woke up this morning and i was like barely able to walk as i got out of bed um and i think it just sort of got into my head a lot yeah nice good thing you job what it's like when it's pretty up here are there anything no it was good let's go i sort of broke down because i was like so close to finishing this event and so close to maybe being able to win it but not even sure if i'd be able to get through the next two i was like ready to tell her like just drop out just like you know it's not worth it and things like that but she was like well i'm just gonna you know it is what it is and i'm just gonna hammer the ocr as hard as i can no matter how much it hurts and i was like okay like again like if that's what you want to do so yeah i guess i kind of forget how um how tough she is sometimes and how uh good and committed and how much she cares all right sam damn it ready [Applause] there's people in there from yesterday no there's people in here [Applause] good job brother [Music] oh [Music] good work [Applause] how was it it was awesome yay i'm dead why is it a mile please don't fall down the mountain step on the way down you guys dude all right great let's not fall down the mountain that was awesome your christmas present yeah look at your bowls i thought waking up this morning i was like i feel good i feel like a bucket of used butts right now [Music] so [Music] today we're going heavy [Music] make sure you drop at the top light up your legs so we took our traditional deck a strong event and uh which made it heavier and so a lot of the athletes are going through the reps right now kind of getting warmed up understanding the range of motions and even technique for some of them and get ready to go just got to give it what you got right here number three [Applause] three two one let's go [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] uh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Applause] okay [Music] there you go come on lauren drive drive come on you got it you got it [Applause] it's hard going first you don't know what you're beating but i gave it everything i had i didn't go too hard out the gate finished strong i think yeah i knew i was i mean lindsay's never really done most of this functional fitness stuff so i know this is a chance i could pull away but if i didn't get i don't get first in this event you know it's just there's seven points between first place and second place from an event so winning an event is huge here we go [Music] let's go good job [Music] okay there you go [Music] get two more right here again [Music] playing field was really interesting it was awesome to watch them compete uh you know the usual suspects definitely dominated lindsay corrina and you know there's a couple other girls like that marathon and girl she was absolutely incredible kellen you know she just went out there like when i watched her do deadlifts during deca heavy i was like you've probably never done this before and you're still just gonna go for it and she was deadlifting probably more than some of the guys [Applause] [Music] come on come on [Applause] you're one of the best marathoners in history and you're dead lifting more than guys and you act like it doesn't even it's no big deal it's like i like that that's a cool athlete we had deca heavy that threw me for a loop because i was like really like another heavy event that's totally out of my element i can't even lift the deadlift like an inch off the ground um and so that frustrated me but then i thought there's all these girls who have run these endurance events who've done the mountain bike for like five hours and six hours and it's like if they can do that then i'm not gonna complain about having to do like one measly 10 minute long uh deca heavy event so i don't know it was they really inspired me and i was like they can do it i'm gonna do it [Music] come on try to keep that right [Music] perfect [Music] [Applause] [Music] come on come on come on [Applause] because it's really hard i haven't deadlifted before i couldn't even like budget off the ground and warm up and i just didn't want to get hurt i think if it was just one i could do it but uh 10 of them was like um crossing the line of dangerous for me so there we go [Music] [Music] [Music] i feel like i went to some places i haven't gone to before which is pretty amazing one thing i like to say is that uh you know my biggest fear is being too comfortable so this definitely got me out of my comfort zone a lot i was expecting a little bit more endurance space things and so to be able to suck it up and do more of the strength-based stuff i was pretty proud of myself for giving some of that stuff a shot [Music] oh recovery [Music] not my thing unfortunately but i tried as best i could i tried the deadlifts before i can't do reps with that weight so i decided to skip the deadlifts so that puts me back in the pack needed some points but i don't think i got any might have got a couple lane one hunter mcintyre lane two run kids [Music] wow [Music] pick it up [Music] [Music] [Music] let's go [Music] [Music] good work come on let's go okay come on kid let's go let's go let's go [Music] oh here we go [Music] oh come on let's go all the way down just down one more there you go ryan let's do it come on [Music] watch out for the red strap [Music] good it's easy atkins also has to do bad on this he may tank it but you know a lot of strong guys here i think have been waiting for this i had to make five hours on a bike and then six hours and running i feel like some people are pretty fed up with being out on the trails so it's time for them to shine i'm sure ryan could deadlift 225 he got the big stone up which is 2 30. only where i had for him i was like dude if you're not familiar with it drop it every time like that girl kellen she dropped it and she made it started doing the pull ups at the end so people are achieving the task at hand it's just whether or not you want to just like kill yourself for placement seeing how he and i are going between first and second for twenty thousand dollars it's a big difference for him versus calendar who's kind of backpack right now [Music] [Applause] you're gonna go here drop at the top come back down take a dig deep breath in yeah when you start to get tired this is where people also get like hurt keep this [ __ ] tight remember he's talking about his shoulder blades don't allow yourself to go like this just to get a rep because what that does it just takes the alignment out of your spine and then it adds pressure down here back straight up yeah so that's why you take that big breath you hold your breath while you lift yeah i mean some people are going to be so fast they're not going to make a difference of it there's going to go like this but every single time you're powerlifting your mouth like don't let the air like like brace like you want my pressure to sky yeah move that way move that way move that way [Music] 15 kills [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] come on [Music] last step up [Music] clear clear [Music] oh press the link come on drive deal with it that's right [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh [Applause] right [Applause] [Applause] oh [Applause] [Applause] go go [Music] come on one second decca strong was really tough i didn't even know if i could lift the weight let alone 10 reps and then when i finished and found out that i was again one second behind ryan kent it was like just really devastating because to have that happen to you twice and then having gotten miswrapped um a few times i was just like really frustrated that you know that ball bounced wrong for me you know twice and three times if you include my wrestling draw and stuff like that it was just like a really frustrating moment for myself a little bit heat on the field just like one or two reps good great competition right now he's a third that's insane i mean i just watched him do something that i did not expect out of him this is crazy how do you feel about it what were you saying about the bike the seat was wrong right now did you adjust it before well they put it to my setting but that the one bike has a different gap in all the seat in the seat heights why don't you try it because i've been riding this bike you can get on it though you can get on it i thought i was gonna be in this lane i was on that bike warming up see this gap you have a chance to try it so would you try the other one yeah i tried the other one in my mind i thought it was in the other lane i guess i just had to like take that and like channel that energy into the last event here was like you okay physically i'm fine it's all pride my pride's hurt i just got smashed by the ground let's go let's go [Music] 10 reps it's only 10 reps remember [Music] there you go [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] come on come on [Music] come on there you go come on nope it's okay come on come on time is time is good come on two more that's it two more let's go one more almost come on come on one more you got it you got it come on man you're mad get back last one [Applause] you gotta go i'm like if i go any harder i will face plan and that will cost me time it's it's just my legs are so tired after all the hill runs the mountain bike uphill the king of the mountain race uphill everything is uphill sometimes everything in life is uphill before we press on full sin let's go [Music] [Music] we capped it off with the spartan cross but we shortened it we made it um approximately two and a half k 1500 meters of the actual ocr lap if you will and then about 800 meters of trail running and then 350 meters of carrying the harley davidson buckets it was short enough they could just just lay it all out on the line but long enough where you could see the race develop and see lead changes if you needed to so as a reminder okay she's still got a one-minute penalty one attempt on rope climb monkey bar and twister okay a five-minute penalty unlimited attempts on hercules hoist okay and you can stand on top of the truss as long as you don't go on the other side of the trust okay and then as a reminder last slap one point to whoever does it the fastest when you add in the penalties okay going into the last event uh women will be going first this is what the scores look like so by the time we got to that spartan cross we quickly realized that we had a really tight field we had um hunter and ryan within three points of each other and then on the women's side we had um lindsay and um trina within one point of each other and so it was anyone's game i didn't know we would be that close and that i would be in the lead after the decca strong event so that just seeing that it was kind of like a relief that okay wow i made up the point difference heading into that i was like oh my gosh i have to like i really have to find a different gear for the obstacle course race atkins and i used to go back and forth i had one event he would have been high win event he'd win an event we're always so close to each other you know i would say he's probably one of the most versatile endurance athletes in the entire world like he won't win every single thing but he'll come very close and you can take him for a long time [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Applause] [Music] come on i knew lindsay was faster in the running and so she definitely caught up to me in the the running sections between obstacles and then during the run section the 800 meter woods run she she passed me and created a little bit quite quite a gap um which i thought okay like we'll have two laps of the obstacle course i think i can close in on her with my obstacle proficiency [Applause] [Music] wow [Music] it works [Music] so [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] i just didn't feel as quick through everything and then with the rain um you know it's just it's a whole other element on those grip strength obstacles so then my my backup strategy was okay we'll let her let her run fast let her get her ahead and bank on her potentially like failing an obstacle and then me making sure okay she's failed i can you know she has a minute time penalty and i just have to make sure i i complete this [Applause] oh come on [Music] yes how does it feel lindsay uh surreal right now i thought i'd cry honestly if i won but i feel like it just hasn't sunk in and i'm wondering what's gonna be the next thing they're probably gonna make us do a beer mile with athletic brewing or something i mean it just means so much to me i came here to push my body to new limits and find out what i was capable of and i think i'm really impressed with how my body sort of managed this whole thing and um that i'm still able to move after all of it and uh just makes me like wonder what i'm capable of and want to try it again and even take it a step further so come on spartan games 20 21. come on [Music] [Applause] i mean props to lindsay that was she deserved to win that i just oh i'm a little upset that it wasn't it wasn't my win but you know she was the best one out there today that kind of crushed me even though like i'm really proud of myself and happy with second place um i just like to be so close and really think like hey this should be you and to not be able to execute was was pretty devastating second place is all right we're just happy to be happy to be done with these four days so it's been a long it's been a long call we've been put through a lot but it was such a great experience i wouldn't change it for the world it was awesome i'm glad i did it oh my gosh [Applause] it's been a long four days [Applause] [Music] here you go good job [Music] uh standing on the start line i'm just like breathing really deeply trying to get like as much oxygen in kind of before the event and like really calm myself um before the event like before it goes off once like the star line goes off it's it's mostly just pure instinct and you're just making like little inputs foreign the whole reason why i came here this weekend is like to compete but mostly to beat atkins atkins and i used to go back and forth i had one event he would have been i wouldn't event he'd win an event like last time i think we raced was truly race was at tmx 2018 and i beat him but that was more my category of event before that last time we raced was 2017 spartan race world championships he took fourth i took fifth you know last time we raced before that was spartan race nbc um in norcal and i led the whole race and they beat me by like 10 seconds so like we're always so close to each other so i just came here i was like you know what i know there's a lot on the line that i don't know about but i do know that atkins is going to be there and i know i want to beat them i see the you know the monkey bars and i make the decision to instead of match i'm gonna go one at a time and i know that's gonna save myself three or four seconds because hunter is matching everyone and then when i come off that i'll just like get into a run that's faster than hunter and then once i'm ahead i just stretch that lead but in the most comfortable manner possible [Music] [Music] and i really like controlling the race from the front because then i can like do what i want when i want how i want and the other person has to react to me so for me that's like the best situation to be in [Music] okay [Music] good job ken [Music] once i'm in that situation it's just kind of like don't make mistakes be smart [Music] [Music] so [Music] come on mike there you go all right hunter [Music] [Applause] [Music] minutes hell yeah kurt come on one more walk [Music] [Music] [Music] really happy to be able to keep it together and like perform the finish line [Music] wow [Music] if you look at all my results every endurance place event i took fifth place or below besides the spartan crosses that's pretty bad like that's what took me out of the game um so i need to spend time swimming i need to spend more time biking i need to spend more time running i completely forgot about what it felt like to be an outdoor athlete it's a totally different experience and i let that all go because i was like i don't need it i'm not doing that stuff anymore and then all of a sudden you get a call to a championship spartan games with one month notice i was like yeah i'm still the beast that i've always been i showed up and i was like you know just a few hairshy of what i used to be i think that this weekend has been phenomenal right it's something that's in my experience never been created you know to this extent where you have such world-class athletes from so many diverse backgrounds so moving forward i'll continue to surround myself with high level high quality individuals that want the best for themselves and whatever they're doing right and what does that look like there's no science to it but progress development hands hurt a little bit yeah am i pride hurts a little bit yeah mike but i'm sure i'm going to look back at this and say this is pretty freaking awesome i'm okay yeah nice you got it push push light press leg press mike [Applause] what i hope people will take from this is like you know you can be any size shape um background and still come to a spartan event and be challenged and and learn and grow and have an experience that will last a lifetime [Music] so [Music] i don't think we could have scripted a better ending um i mean it literally came down to the last event you know and just looking back broader at the the intent of what we're trying to do which is find the the fittest person or the fitness athlete in the world i really believe we did that you kind of have to be a master of all trades you know it's as posted as master of one and i think i think it should create an opportunity for folks to mother woodwork that potentially could be like really good at everything maybe there's more hunters and ryans out there and lindsey's right there's got to be a lot of people in the world so we just gotta go find them [Music] congratulations you are here you finished the spartan games battle of the fittest presented by harley davis congratulations [Music] uh in second place karina as disappointed as i was initially with you know coming up short second you know to look at all the ten events that we've done over the past four days and you know to finish in the top five in all of those events for me is a big accomplishment you know could i excel can i pick one thing and excel at it maybe with like a really rigorous training program yes i think i could but like i really like to have fun with my training and switch it up and so something like this like the spartan games really allows me or would allow me to continue to pursue that and then have something to show for that at the end of the year brian kent in third place with 114 uh in second place a battle down to literally seconds in the end uh hunter mcintyre 159 points [Applause] all right in first place with the most points of the entire competition um ryan atkins with 168 points [Applause] taking home 20 000 [Applause] i saw so many different types of athletes and different types of people uh all come together and all just like really push each other and i think it really solidified my like love for support but also my love for like trying new things and being outside of your comfort zone and really um and really being a multi-faceted athlete an athlete who can perform across a lot of different arenas and um competitions instead of just someone who just you know can do one thing and i've always wanted to like be that athlete and aspire to like be like that so i went away for three years and now i'm back and i'm like god i hate losing to atkins i better come back and beat him in something so i think i'm back fighting invincibles
