>> WELCOME TO OUR LIVE COVERAGE OF SPACEX DEMO ONE MISSION. IF YOU ARE JUST JOINING US, DRAGO IS ON ITS WAY BACK HOME TO US. >>> THE MISSION BEGAN ON MARCH d , WHERE DRAGON LAUNCHED FROM KENNEDY SPACE CENTER IN FLORIDA. FOLLOWING THAT SUCCESSFUL LAUNCH, IT ARRIVED AT THE SPACE STATION AND DOCKED ON MARCH #RD. >>> IT WILL MARK THE THIRD COMPLETION FOR NASA'S COMMERCIAL CREW PROGRAM. WHILE THERE ARE NO ASTRONAUTS ON DRAGON TODAY. THIS IS AN IMPORTANT MILESTONE. >>> EARLIER TODAY, DRAGON WERED UP, AND BEGAN PROCEDURES AND SYSTEM CHECKS. >> AND AUTONOMOUSLY UNDOCKED 11:32 PACIFIC TIME. I AM PRETTY SURE IT IS MARCH 8th TODAY. WE WILL BE BRINGING YOU LIVE COVERAGE OF THE LIVE MISSION, TO THE DEORBIT BURN ALL THE WAY TO THE SPLASHDOWN, WHICH WE ARE TARGETING FOR 5:45 A.M. EAST OF KENNEDY SPACE CENTER. >>> ONE INTERESTING HISTORICAL NOTE, IT HAS MATERIALLY BEEN 50 YEARS TO THE DAY, SINCE APOLLO 9 WAS TO SPLASHDOWN IN THE ATLANTIC, BACK MARCH 13th, 1959. SO, A PRETTY BIG DAY. >>> UNFORTUNATELY DUE TO BLACKOUTS, WE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SHOW YOU ALL THE JOURNEY HOME. BUT WE WILL SHOW YOU DEORBIT BURN AND TRUNK SEPARATION, AND WE HAVE BEEN GETTING GOOD VIEWS OF RECOVERY SHIPS, AND SO WE SHOULD HAVE GOOD VIEWS OF THE DRAGON SPLASHING DOWN IN THE WATER. >> FIRST, DRAGON WILL -- WHICH IS THE IS A LYNN CALIFORNIA -- >> THAT WILL BE COMING UP IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES OR SO. LIKE WE SAY, WE CAN'T SHOW EVERY PART OF THIS FOR THE MISSION, BUT WE WILL BE LISTENING TO THE FLIGHT CONTROL TEAM. WE HAVE ONE BEHIND US IN HAWTHORNE, ON THOSE ARE THE ONES MONITORING DRAGON SYSTEMS, SINCE IT LIFTED OFF SIX DAYS AGO. IT HAS FLOWN BY, SO FAR. WE WILL BE LISTENING AND GIVING YOU THE UPDATES AS THEY COME IN. >> IF YOU HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING ALONG THIS MORNING, YOU MIGHT HAVE SEEN US LAST NIGHT OR THIS MORNING, IT IS HARD TO TELL, YOU SAW DRAGON COMPLETE A SERIES OF BURNS. THERE WERE A NUMBER OF DEPARTURE BURNS AWAY FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION, THAT DRAGON COMPLETED WHICH ALLOWED THE SPACECRAFT TO MOVE FURTHER, AND FURTHER AWAY FROM THE SPACE STATION, IN CHOREOGRAPHED MANEUVERS. EVERYTHING WENT WELL. SO NOW WE ARE JUST WAITING FOR THE TRUNK SEPARAT AND AFTER THAT, WE WILL HAVE A PRETTY EXCITING DEORBIT AND SPLASHDOWN. WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO THAT. >> AT THIS POINT, THE DRAGON WELL BELOW THE SPACE STATION AND QUITE A FEW KILOMETERS AHEAD OF IT, AT THIS POINT. MAKING SURE IT IS NOT ON THE SAME ORBITAL PLANE, AND THAT WILL BE THE NEXT STEP COMING UP. AND THE DEORBIT BURN, IT WILL BE A 15-MINUTE FIRING OF THOSE THRUSTERS ON DRAGON, AND THAT'S OF ORBIT.CALLY WILL TAKE IT OUT SO, IT WILL FIRE THE THRUSTERS UNTIL IT IS POINTING DOWN IN THE OCEAN, IN THE ATLANTIC, AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THING IN 50 YEARS. THIS WILL BE AN EXCITING MORNING. AND WE WILL BRING YREAT VIEWS. THE SUN IS UP ALREADY OVER ON THE EAST COAST -- >> AS SOMEONE WHO HAS SEEN THE SPECIFIC VEHICLE GET BUILT OVER THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, IT IS PRETTY INCREDIBLE. TO ACTUALLY SEE THE ASTRONAU ON BOARD THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION, FLOATING IN AND OUT OF THE CAPSULE AS THEY WERE OPENING THE HATCH, THAT WAS EXCITING. AND UPON THE DEPARTURE BURNS TO SEE THE IMAGERY, AS DRAGON WAS LEAVING, IT WAS INCREDIBLE. WE HAD SOME AMAZING SHOTS. WE HAVE SEEN THE ARTISTIC RENDERING, AND TO FINALLY SEE IT, WAS A WONDERFUL MOMENT IN TERMS OF THOSE OF US WHO HAVE HAD SO MANY HOURS PUT INTO THE SPACECRAFT. >> IT ALMOST DIDN'T LOOK REAL. >> Y [LAUGHTER] >> WHEN YOU ACTUALLY SAW IT FLYING OUT THERE. SINCE PART OF IT HAPPENED IN THE CREWS' DAY IN THE SPACE STATION, THEY ACTUALLY WOKE UP ABOUT AN HOUR BEFORE DRAGON UNDOCKED. >>> SO, IT WAS EARL IN THE MORNING FOR THEM, THEY DID OFFER GOOD WORDS, AS DRAGON FLEW AWAY. SO, ABOUT A KILOMETER AWAY FROM THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. AS KATE SAID, IT EXECUTED ALL ITS DEPARTURE BURNS, EXECUTED FOUR DEPARTUREBURNS, BASICALLY TAKING IT OUT IN FRONT, UP AROUND AND UNDERNEATH THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION, WHERE IT IS NOW ON ITS ORBIT AWAITING ITS TRUNK SEPARATION AND EVENTUALLY THE DEORBIT BURN. >> SO IN TERMS OF SPACEX HISTORY, THIS DEMONSTRATION MISSION IS INCREDIBLY IMPORTANT. INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT IS HANGING BEHIND ME, AND HAWTHORNE, CALIFORNIA IS ITS HEADQUARTERS, AND SAME MISSION AS OUR CARGO PROGRAM THAT WE HAVE BEEN OPERATING FOR NASA, WE SUPPLY CARGO TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. >>> SO, WHO KNOWS IF THE DEMO 1 CAPSULE WILL BE HANGING IN HAWTHORNE. BUT IN TERMS WHAT YOU SEE BEHIND ME, IS SIMILARLY IN TERMS OF HISTORICAL EVERYONING IN TERMS OF HISTORICAL MISSION. >> THAT WILL BE BETWEEN DEM WHICH WE ARE ABOUT TO WRAP UP, AND DEMO 2, WHERE WE ACTUALLY HAVE OUR ASTRONAUTS ON BOARD. THEY WILL BE THE FIRST ONES TO TAKE DRAGON INTO SPACE. THAT WILL BE A PRETTY COOL TEST. >> I WOULDN'T WANT BE INVD WI IT, BECAUSE OF A LOT OF G FORCES, BUT IMPORTANT FOR US TO DEMONSTRATE THE ABILITY FOR THE CAPSULE TO LEAVE THE VEHICLE IN AN URGENT NEED TO DO SO. WE ARE ALL LOOKING FORWARD TO THE TEST FLIGHT, BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN WORKING ON ITOR THE LAST COUPLE OF YEARS, AND, YEAH, THAT SHOULD BE COMING UP IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS HERE. >> YOU DID A PADDLE BOARD TEST WITH THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT. >> UM-HMM. >> REALLY PUTTING THE DRAGON THROUGH ALL ABORT TESTS AND MISSIONS RIGHT NOW. ULTIMATELY SENDING HUMANS TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION ON A DRAGON. >> SOMETHING INTERESTING ABOUT TODAY'S MISSION, IN FACT, THE COMMERCIAL CREW PROGRAM GOING FORWARD IN TERMS OF SPACEX'S APPROACH OF LANDING THE CAPSULES, WE ARE LANDING THEM IN THE ATLANTIC LIKE WE MENTIONED EARLY, WHEREAS THE CARGO KA CAPSULES HAVE ALL LD IN THE PACIFIC. WE ARE PUMPED TO BRING YOU FOOTAGE OF OUR RECOVERY TEAM AS WE PULL DRAGON OUT OF THE OCEAN. IT HAS BEEN A LOT OF FIRSTS TODAY, AND ALL WEEK. TO SAY THE ADRENALINE IS PUMP TODAY, IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT. >> WE HAD A CROWD EARLIER THIS MORNING, GATHERED DOWN AT THE CONTROL, AND THERE IS MORE OF A CROWD NOW. IT IS 4:30 IN THE MORNING ON THE WEST COAST. THE CROWD IS STARTING TATHER HERE AT SPACEX HEADQUARTERS. >>> NORMALLY THOSE CARGO DRAGONS LANDING IN THE PACIFIC, AND THIS VEHICLE DESIGNED FOR CREW, ALSO IS CARRYING SOME CARGO. IT HAS BEEN PACKED WITH A LITTLE R 300 POUNDS FOR THE RETURN TRIP HOME. THAT IS BROKEN OUT ACROSS OF A COUPLE DIFFERENT AREAS. >>> ONE OF THE MOSH INTERESTING ONES, IT IS BRINGING BACK WHAT UTILIZATION, SOME SCIENCE SAMPLES. TWO BAGS, BASICALLY LIKE COOLERS, PACKED WITH THE COLD BRICK. THE ONES COMING BACK TODAY, USED IN SOME OF THE HUMAN RESEARCH PROJECTS, WE LIKE TO SAY THE ASTRONAUTS ARE EXPERIMENTS THEMSELVES. POKING AND PRODDING TO SEE HOW THE HUMAN BODY REACTS TO MICROGRAVITY, AND A LOT OF THE SAMPLES ARE COMING HOME ON DRAGON TODAY. ALSO BRINGING HOME A COUPLE OF RADIATION MONTHOR >>> IT WILL ALSO HAVE A FAN PUMP ELEVATOR ON IT. IT IS A -- ELEVATOR ON IT. WE HAVE SOME SPACEWALKS COMING UP IN MARCH. VERY BUSY TIME IN SPACE RIGHT NOW. RIGHT NOW, ALL FOCUSED ON WATCHING THIS DRAGON COME HOME. >> THE NEXT MILESTONE WE HAVE COMING UP IN ABOUT SEVEN MINUTES, IS THE TRUNK SEPARATION. WE WILL TAKE A BREAK FOR A FEW MINUTES, WHILE WE AWAIT THAT, TO STAY TUNED AND WE WILL SEE YOU IN A COUPLE. >> SO,HT NOW WE ARE WAITING TO HEAR FROM THE TRUNK SEPARATION AGAIN. WE ARE EXPECTING TO GET THE CALL ON THE INTERNAL ANY MOMENT NOW. THAT WILL BE THE NEXT MAJOR MILESTONE, AND THEN IT WILL BE ON TO DEORBIT BURN. >> EXACTLY. SO, WE SHOULD HAVE THE CALL ANY MINUTE NOW. AS WE WAIT FOR TANK SEPARATION. THIS IS THE LAST THING THE DRAGON HAS TO DO BEFORE IT REENTERS THE ORBIT ATMOSPHERE AND SPLASHES DOWN. >> THE TRUNK NOT COMING HOME, BUT THE DRAGON MOST IMPORTANT PART IS COMING HOME. IT HAS TO CLOSE THE NOSE CONE, AND WE WILL GET INTO THAT SOON. BASICALLY THAT NOSE CONE WILL PROTECT THE TOP PART OF THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT, AND THE GUIDANCE AND NAVIGATION CONTROL CENTERS. THAT'S ONE OF THE LAST MILESTONES. >>> THAT NOSE CONE GETS JETTISON DURING THE LAUNCH PHASE. WITH CREW DRAGON KEEPING THE NOSE CONE ALL THE WAY THROUGH, IT HELPS IN THE REUSABILITY FOR FUTURE MISSIONS. >> NOW THAT TRUNK SECTION IS UNPRESSURIZED AND WE ARE ABLE TO USE IT TO TRANSPORTATION CARGO ON THE WAY UP TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. EVERYTHING THAT COMES BACK FR STATION IS PUT INTO THE PRESSURIZED SECTION. WE ARE ABLE TO SHED THE TRUNK AS IT IS NO LONGER NEEDED -- >> AND I THINK WE JUST HEARD TRUNK SEPARATION. >> HOPING TO BRING YOU VISUAL HERE -- NO, WE ARE TOO FAR. >> NEXT STOP WILL BE THE SPACECRAFT USING SOME FORWARD THRUSTERS TO PERFORM THE DEORBIT BURN. THIS IS GOING TO IT BE A REALLY MAJOR STUFF, BECAUSE ONCE THAT IS DONE, YOURE COMING HOME AND RETURN TO EARTH. THE BURN WILL LAST ABOUT 15 MINUTES ONCE IT STARTS. WE WILL AGAIN, CONTINUE TO STAND BY. THIS IS KIND THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM, IF YOU WILL, WHERE WE ARE WAITING FOR THINGS TO REALLY GET IO MOTION. DRAGON WILL PRETTY SOON DO THE DEORBIT BURN. FOLLOWING THAT, IT ONLY TAKES 45 MINUTES OR SO, UNTIL IT IS IN THE WATER AND INTO THE ATLANTIC. ONCE AGAIN, WE WILL CONTINUE TO STAND BY, AND BG YODATES AS THEY COME IN. >>> ONE MORE MILESTONE DOWN, JUST A FEW MORE TO GO, AND THEN DRAGON IS HOME. >> WE ARE STANDING BY FOR THE DEORBIT BURN TO START. WE ARE EXPECTING IT TO START IN ABOUT A MINUTE OR SO. >>> AFTER THAT, IT WILL TAKE A LITTLE OVER 15 MINUTES TO COMPLETE. >> YEAH, SO, WE HAVE ALREADY JETTISON THE TRUNK, AOU HEARD US TALK ABOUT A COUPLE MINUTES AGO. THAT'S THE LAST THING DRAGON IS ABLE TO DO BEFORE REENTERING THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. THAT WILL BE ABOUT A 15 MINUTE BURN, THEN WE WILL HAVE PARACHUTE DOO DEPLOYMENT AND SPLASHDOWN AFTER THAT. LIKE DAP SAID, THIS IS THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM. WE WILL HAVE A LOT OF ACTIVITY COMING UP, ONCE WE PASS THROUGH THE REENTRY BURN. >>> AT THIS POINT, WE SHOULD BE GETTING CONFIRMATION OF THE DEORBIT BURN IN A COUPLE SECONDS HERE. > ONCE THE DEORBIT BURN IS COMPLETE, IT IS JUST ABOUT -- I AM TRYING TO DO QUICK MATH IN MY HEAD -- JUST ABOUT 40 MINUTES OR SO UNTIL DRAGON IS TO BE DOWN IN THE WATER. IT IS A QUICK RIDE FROM BEING IN OUTER SPACE TO BE -- AND WE JUST HEARD IT. >> LIKE WE SAID, THIS WILL LAST ABOUT 15 MINUTES. SO, DEORBIT BURN HAS BEGUN, AND AT THIS POINT, DRAGON HAS BEGUN TO RETURN TO THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. WE ARE EXCITED FOR THIS TO HAPPEN, AND IT IS THE NEXT MILESTONE IN ITS JOURNEY HOME. >> THAT'S RIGHT. ULTIMATE DESTINATION DOWN IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. BOTH STANDING BY. WE WILL GO THROUGH THEOVERY FORCES ON SITE. THERE IS ONE RECOVERY BOAT, AND THAT WILL HAVE ALL THE SPACEX RECOVERY TEAMS RESPONSIBLE FOR GOING OUT AND PICKING THE CAPSULE OUT OF THE WATER. THIS IS A CAMERA VIEW FROM ONE OF THE OTHER BOATS IN THE AREA, THE GO NAVIGATE FOR, WHO HAS A NASA TEAM ON BOARD, AS WELL. >>> ONCE WE HAVE EVERYONE ON BOARD, IT WILL TIGHTER QUARTERS. YOU HAVE THE SPACEX PEOPLE GO RECOVER THE CAPSULE, AND BRING BACK THE FLIGHT DOCKS AND NURSES, AND IF ANYONE HAS EVER SEEN A LANDING, ONCE THE CREW COMES HOME, AFTER ABOUT A SIX-MONTH PERIOD, DO A QUICK MEDICAL CHECK, AND MAKE SURE EVERYONE IS DOING OKAY, AND HELP ADAPT TO GRAVITY FOR THE FIRST TIME AFTER SIX MONTHS OR LONGER. >>> WE HAVE TWO BOATS, AND GET ADDITIONAL VIEWS, HOPEFULLY, AS WE GET THE WATCH DRAGON DOWN. RIGHT NOW, WE ARE IN DEORBIT BURN, AND WE HAVE A COUPLE MINUTES UNTIL THAT IS COMPLETE, AND WE ARE ONE STEP CLOSER. >> WE WILL PAUSE FOR A FEW MINUTES, UNTIL THE DEORBIT BURNS COMPLETES, SO BEURE T SK AROUND AND WE WILL SEE YOU IN A FEW MINUTES. >> SO, RIGHT NOW WE ARE HALF-WAY THROUGH THE DEORBIT BURN, AND WE EXPECT IT TO LAST 15 MINUTES AND 20 SECONDS. WAS JUST REPORTING TO THE STATION FLIGHT DIRECTOR, THAT WE ARE ABOUT HALF-WAY THROUGH. WE ARE CONTINUE TO GET A COUPLE VIEWS FROM THE BOATS. THOSE ARE CAMERAS THAT WILL BE TRACKING DRAGON ONCE IT COMES DOWN UNDER THE PARACHUTES. AND THIS IS A VIEW FROM A WV57 AIRPLANE. AND, SO, WE HAVE A NUMBER OF ASSETS OUT THERE OFF THE FLORIDA COAST. AGAIN, THERE ARE TWO SHIPS, BOTH WITH TRACKING CAMERAS ON BOARD, AND NASA ALSO FLYING ITS WV57 AIRCRAFT. TYPICALLY USED FOR HIGH ALTITUDE AND WEATHER RESEARCH. IT HAS A CAMERA ON IT, AND HOPEFULLY GIVE US SOME VIEWS OF DRAGON COMING DOWN. >> THERE ARE YOUR SCREEN, YOU SEE A BEAUTIFUL SHOT OF GO SEARCHER. THERE ON THE FRONT PART OF THE SHIP, WHAT WOULD ESSENTIALLY BE THE CREWS' QUARTERS DURING THE WAIT. THEY COULD BE OUT TO SEA, DEPENDING HOW ROUGH THE WAVES ARE, TO A COUPLE OF WEEKS TO A COUPLE OF DAYS. >>> THEY ARE COMING INTO VIEW ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF CREW SCREEN. ON THE TOP, IS ACTUALLY THE HELLY PAD FOR HELICOPTERS TO LAND IF WE NEED TO TAKE THE ASTRONAUTS QUICKER, AND REALLY SOMETHING THAT I ABSOLUTELY LOVE ABOUT THIS CAPSULE, UNDERNEATH THAT HELLY PAD ARE MEDICAL QUARTERS. SO, WE ARE ABLE TO GET THE ASTRONAUTS CHECKED OUT IMMEDIATELY AFTER EGRESSING FROM THE CAPSULE, AND CHECK THEM OUT THERE, AND GIVE THEM A WARM WELCOME. NOT ON LAND YET, OBVIOUSLY. IT IS JUST AN INCREDIBLE VEHICLE THERE THAT WE ARE ABLE TO SUSTAIN SO MUCH ACTIVITY. WHILE WE ARE WAITING FOR THE ASTRONAUTS TO SPLASHDOWN, AND OBVIOUSLY ONCE THEY ARE ON BOARD. >> IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE, RIGHT NOW THE TEAMS ARE 200 OR SO, GIVE OR TAKE, NAUTICAL MILES OFF THE COAST. THAT WON'T BE THE CASE WHEN WE ARE BRINGING CREW MEMBERS BACK. THAT LANDING WILL BE MORE CLOSER IN. IT WILL BE 20 TO 24 NATURE CAL MILES. SO THAT GIVES THEM THE CAPABILITY OF GET INTO WITHIN A COUPLE OF HOURS, THAN THE DAY IT LOOKS LIKE IT WILL BRING DRAGON BACK AFTER THIS MISSION J THERE WE HAVE SOME VIEWS FROM DRAGON, AS IT IS REENTERING THE ATMOSPHERE. IT IS PRETTY DARK IN SPACE. >> WE ARE STILL IN THE MIDST OF THAT DEORBIT BURN. WE ARE EXPECTING IT TO TAKE FIVE MORE MINUTES. SO THAT'S PRETTY UNIQUE GETTING VIEWS FROM THE SPACECRAFT WHILE THAT DEORBIT BURN IS UNDERWAY. >>> AGAIN, THIS IS THE FINAL MANEUVER, OF THOSE THRUSTERS, TO BRING DRAGON OUT OF ORBIT AND SET IT UP, TO SPLASHDOWN OVER IN THE ATLANTIC. YOU ARE SEEING THE RECOVERY TEAMS ARE STANDING BY, WAITING ANDEADY TO RECEIVE. >>> AGAIN, THE DEORBIT BURN LASTING OR PLANNED TO LAST ABOUT 15 MINUTES AND 20 SECONDS. THIS IS JUST AN ULTIMATELY TO CARRY DRAGON OUT OF ITS CIRCULAR ORBIT. RIGHT NOW IT HAS BEEN IN A CIRCULAR ORBIT FOR THE LAST SEVERAL HOURS. THIS DEORBIT BURN IS GOING TO CHANGE THAT, BASICALLY TO INTERCEPT BACK DOWN WITH THE EARTH. BACK DOWN IN THE WATER, WHERE THE RECOVERY TEAMS ARE WAITING. >> NOW THAT WE HAVE A FULL VIEW OF THE RECOVERY VESSEL ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF CREW SCREEN, YOU SEE A PORTION OF THE SHIPS WE WERE NOT ABLE TO SEE BEFORE. THAT'S ACTUALLY THE PORTION OF THE SHIP, ONCE THE DRAGON CAPSULE IS CLOSE ENOUGH, IT WILL BE LIFTED UP OUT OF THE WATER BY THE VERTICAL PIECE YOU SEE THERE. IT WILL ACTUALLY ACT WAIT OUT OF THE WATER, AND LIFT THE DRAGON CAPSULE OUT OF THE OCEAN, AND BRING IT BACK ON TO THE BOAT AND SET DOWN ON TO ITS NEST. PRETTY COOL. THIS IS NEW. A NEW TECHNOLOGY THAT WE HAVE INSTALLED ON THIS SHIP SPECIFICALLY FOR OUR CREW DRAGON MISSION. SO, LIKE WE SAID BEFORE, THIS IS A DEMONSTRATION MISSION, AND WHILE OUR RECOVERY TEAAS BEEN PRACTICING FOR RECOVERY OPERATIONS, THIS IS OBVIOUSLY THE FIRST TIME THAT WE WILL BE PRACTICING WITH A VEHICLE COMING FROM SPACE. >>> SO, WE ARE ALL EXCITED BRINGING YOU LIVE COVERAGE AS THIS UNFOLDS OVER THE NEXT HOUR OR SO. >> TO GIVE YOU A TIMELINE OF THAT RECOVERY PERIOD, IT IS EXPECTED TO TAKE A LITTLE UNDER AN HOUR OR SO, FOR THE TEAMS TO HAVE THE CAPSULE BACK UP ON THE BOAT, WHERE THERE IS A SITUATION THERE IS A CREW ON BOARD, GETTING THE CREW OUT OF THE WA, SO THEY CAN DO MEDICAL CHECKS, AND THINGS WE TYPICALLY DO AFTER CREW MEMBERS ARE RETURNING AFTER THESE LONG MISSIONS. >>> SO, WITH THE WAVES LOOKING PRETTY CALM THOUGH, LOOKING LIKE REALLY GOOD CONDITIONS OUT THERE, IN THE ATLANTIC. AGAIN, THERE ARE ARE A LITTLE OVER 200 NATURE CAL MILES OFF THE -- NAUTICAL MILES IN FLORIDA. THE SPACECRAFT WILL BE BROUGHT BACK IN, AND THEY WILL BEGIN PROCESNG, AND GET IT READY TO TURN IT AROUND. >> YEAH, WE HAVE BEEN MONITORING THE RECOVERY WEATHER CONDITIONS OVER THE LAST SEVERAL DAYS, AND NOW THAT RECOVERY DAY HAS COME UPON US, YOU CAN SEE WE HAVE BEAUTIFUL SKIES. AND IN MY UNPROFESSIONAL NAUTICAL KNOWLEDGE, RELATIVELY CALM SEES, BY MY EYES. IT IS DIFFICULT TO PREDICT WHAT THE WEATHER IS GOING TO BE LIKE, VERY FAR IN ADVANCE, SO WE ARE HAPPY TO HAVE CLEAR IMAGERY FOR THE RECOVERY TEAM AS WE MAKE PROGRESS HERE. >> I FEEL WE LUCKED OUT WITH FLORIDA WEATHER, SO FAR, ON THIS MISSION. >>> WE ARE HERE, AND THERE IS ABOUT ONE MINUTE LEFT IN THIS DEORBIT BURN. JUST ABOUT DONE WITH THAT. AGAIN, THIS IS THE FINAL MANEUVER OF BRINGING DRAGON OUT OF SPACE. STILL GETTING A COUPLE VIEWS OF DRAGON SPACECRAFT. THAT'S WHAT YOU'RE LOOKING AT. >>> RIGHT NOW, WE WILL STAND BY AND LISTEN TO HOW THE DEORBIT BURN WENT AND WE SHOULD BE WRAPPING UP MOMENTAY. >> SO, WE ARE AWAITING CONFIRMATION OF THE CONCLUSION OF THE DEORBIT BURN. IT HAS BEEN GOING ON FOR THE LAST SEVERAL MINUTES. LIKE WE SAID BEFORE, DRAGON DEPARTED SPACE STATION EARLIER TODAY, PERFORMED A NUMBER OF DEPARTURE BURNS, AND HOPEFULLY SEEING THE FINAL BURN, THE REENTRY BURN. YOU CAN SEE OUR RECOVERY VESSEL WAITING THE SPLASHDOWN OF DRAGON. >>> ONCE WE EXIT -- ONCE WE EXIT THENTRY BURN, WE WILL HAVE PARACHUTE DEPLOYMENT. THERE WILL BE THE SMALLER CHUTES THAT SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN, AND THEN ALLOWING IT TO COME TO A SLOWER VELOCITY AS IT APPROACHES TO THE SURFACE OF THE OCEAN. >> WE ARE BEING TOLD IT WAS A NOMINAL BURN. THE MISSION IS COMPLETE AND DRAGON IS ON ITS WAY HOME. >>> THE NEXT THING THAT WILL HAPPEN, THE NOSE CONE WILL BE CLOSED. THEN IT IS TIME FOR DRAGON TO GET THROUGH THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE, AND ULTIMATELY SPLASHDOWN. THAT'S WHERE THE VEHICLE WILL HEAT UP TREMENDOUSLY. AGAIN, YOU HAVE TO KEEP IN MIND, DRAGON TRAVELING THOUSANDS OF MILES PER HOUR NOW, AND WHEN IT HITS THE THICKER EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. THIS IS VIDEO OF THE NOSE CONE STARTING TO CLOSE ON THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT. >>> AGAIN, THAT NOSE CONE CLOSES TO PROTECT THE TOP PORTION OF THE VEHICLE FROM ALL OF THE REENTRY EVENTS. NOT ONLY THE REENTRY, BUT ALSO ONCE IT IS DOWN IN THE WATER. THAT PROTECTS THE GUIDANCED NAVIGATION CONTROL CENTERS ON TOP OF DRAGON. ALSO, THAT DOCKING RANGE THAT IT USES TO ATTACH TO THE SPACE STATION. >> AGAIN, WHAT YOU ARE SEEING RIGHT NOW, IS THE NOSE CONE CLOSING ON THE SPACECRAFT, AS WE AWAIT FORT TO RTERE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. >> ALL RIGHT, SO, THE NOSE CONE LOOKS LIKE IT IS JUST ABOUT CLOSED. WE WILL AWAIT FOR FINAL CONFIRMATION THAT EVERYTHING LOOKS GOOD WITH IT. PRETTY SOON, WE WILL LOOK AT THE ENTREE INTERFACE. THAT IS WHEN DRAGON HITS THE ATMOSPHERE WHERE IT WILL HEAT UP. >>> THE ATMOSPHERE WILL GET THICKER, AND HEAT T VEHICLE UP. THAT'S WHY YOU HAVE THE HEAT SHIELD ON THE SPACECRAFTS. AND THAT'S WHY THEY ARE IN THE CONCAL SHAPE. PHYSICS HAVEN'T CHANGED SINCE THE 160S. IT WAS THAT SHAPE FOR A REASON. THAT'S WHY IT IS SO COMMON TO SEE THIS CAPSULE DESIGN. WHEN YOU RE-ENTER THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE, IT MAKES SENSE. >> NOSE CONE HOOKS HAVE BEGUN SECURING THE NOSE CONE HOOKS INTO PLACE PRIOR TO REENTRY BURN. >> THERE IS AMENTAD TIME WHERE YOU LOSE SIGNAL WITH THE SPACECRAFT. THAT'S BECAUSE AS YOU ARE REENTERING THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE, PLASMA BUILDS UP ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE SPACECRAFT. SO YOU CAN'T SEND OR RECEIVE SIGNALS. IT IS VERY COMMON, WHEN PEOPLE ARE ON BOARD, YOU WILL LOSE VOICE COMMUNICATIONS AND DATA, COMING TO THE SPACECRAFT, TO THE MISSION CONTROL CENTER, JUST BEHIND US HERE IN HAWTHORNE. >>> WE ARE EXPECTING THAT TO HAPPEN ABOUT 5:33 A.M. PACIFIC. COMING UP FROM 20 MINUTES FROM NOW. >> EXACTLY. AFTER WE ARE ABLE TO GET THROUGH THE PHASE OF THE MISSION, FOLLOWING THAT WILL BE THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE PARACHUTES AND SPLASHDOWN. >>> SO TO RECAP, IN CASE YOU JUST JOINED US. WE HAVE -- DRAGON COMPLETED A SERIES OF FOURARTURE BURNS, IN A SLOWLY CHOREOGRAPHED MANEUVER. AND NOW WE HAVE JETTISONED THE TRUNK OF THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT. WE HAVE COMPLETED THE DEORBIT BURN, AND NOW WE ARE JUST STARTING TO COME BACK DOWN THROUGH THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE, AND THE FINAL LEG ON DRAGON'S WAY HOME. >> SO THE NOSE CONE IS CLOSED. WE WILL BE STANDING BY TO WAIT UNTIL WE GO THROUGH THE ENTRY INTERFACING, AND THAT WILL BE ABOUT 20 MINUTES FROM NOW. ONCE IT IS DOWN FROM THERE, TIME FOR THE PARACHUTES. WE WILL HOPEFULLY SEE THOSE PARACHUTES FROM THE PLANE, AND ONCE DOWN, WE SHOULD BE BE ABLE TO SEE THEM FROM THE BOATS THAT ARE THERE FOR RECOVERY. >>> US THROUGH THE PARACHUTES REALLY QUICK? >> YES, WE WILL HAVE THE SMALLER CHUTES THAT WILL SLOW THE DRAGON DOWN A LITTLE BIT, AND THEN THE ORANGEND WHITE COLOURING, IF YOU WATCHED OUR PREVIOUS SPLASHDOWN FOR OUR CARGO MISSION. THAT WILL SLOW THE VEHICLE DOWN, TO HAVE A SPLASHDOWN IN THE WATER. >>> ANOTHER FUN FACT ABOUT DRAGON, IN THE RETURN TO EARTH, THE SEATS INSIDE THE CAPSULE AT THIS POINT, HAVE TURNED INTO THE REENTRY POSITION. DEPENDING ON WHAT PHASE OF THE MISSION WE ARE IN, THE SEATS WILL ACTUALLY ACT WAIT OR ADJUST THE ANGLE TO MAKE SURE THE G FORCES THAT THE ASTRONAUTS WILL BE EXPERIENCING ARE IN THE RIGHT PLACES. >>> WITH THAT BEING SAID, WE WILL TAKE A QUICK BREAK, AND ACTIVE OPERATION -- SO, WITH THAT BEING SAID, WE WILL TAKE A QUICK BREAK, BE SURE TO STAY TUNED US, AS WE GO THROUGH THIS PERIOD OF ANTICIPATED BLACKOUT WITH THE DRAGON CAPSULE. WE WILL BE BACK IN JUST A FEW, AS WE COME BACK IN ANTICIPATION OF THE PARACHUTE DEPLOYMENT. STICK AROUND. >> IF YOU ARE JUST OUT JOINING US, WE HAVE HAD A SUCCESSFUL DEORBIT BURN. THAT WAS A LAAJOR MILESTONE. WE HAVE CONFIRMED THE NOSE CONE IS CLOSED, THE HOOKS ALL ENGAGED. AND NOW WE ARE WAITING FOR THE DRAGON ENTERING THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. >>> IT WAS REPORTE NO ISSUES AND DRAGON IS ON ITS WAY HOME. CONTINUING TO GET SOME PRETTY GREAT VIEWS OUT THERE IN THE SPLASHDOWN ZONE. WE WILL ALSO BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR VIDEO POSSIBLY FROM THE AIRCRAFT WE HAVE IN THE AREA. NASA SEAS WV57 PLANE, AND COME DOWN UNDER THE PARACHUTE. THERE ARE SOME CLOUDS IN THE AREA, SO THE BOATS MAY NOT SEE IT RIGHT AWAY. ONCE IT IS UNDER THE CLOUD DECKS, THEY WILL HAVE SOME COMIDOWN. >> YOU CAN SEE OUR PRIMARY RECOVERY VESSEL -- OOPS, THERE IT WENT. THAT'S OUR RECOVERY SHIP FULLY EQUIPPED FOR MEDICAL QUARTERS, ONCE WE COULD HAVE CREW ON BOARD DRAGON. FOR OUR UPCOMING MISSIONS, THEY WILL BE ABLE TO COME OUT OF THE CAPSULE AND GET AN IMMEDIATE MEDICAL CHECK-UP. THERE IS A HELLY PAD OUT THERE, IN CASE WE WILL BE -- IN CASE WE NEED TO GET THEM BACK TO PORT. >>> SO, THAT YOU CAN SEE ON THE RIGHT-HAND SIDE OF YOUR SCREEN AT THE END OF YOUR THE BOTH, THAT WILL TAKE DRAGON OUT OF THE WATER, LIFT IT UP, AND PLACE IT INTO ITS NEST, WHICH IS ITS OFFICIAL TERM FOR IT. ON TO THE SHIP. AND THAT WILL BE CONSIDERED THE END -- WHEN WE GET TO THAT POINT, THAT WILL BE THE END OF OUR WEB CAST TODAY. >>> AT THIS POINT, WE ARE WAITING FOR THE PARACHUTES TO DEPLOY AND THE ENTER RECOVERY OPERATION. LIKE I MENTIONED BEFORE, THE RECOVERY TEAM HAS PRACTICED THIS. SO, A LOT OF FIRSTS BE SEEING TODAY, AND EXCITED TO SHARE THAT FOR YOU. >> IF YOU MISSED BEFORE, IT HAS ALMOST 50 YEARS TO THE DAY, SINCE WE LANDED A SPACECRAFT DESIGNED FOR HUMANS IN THE ATLANTIC OCEAN. THAT WAS APOLLO 9, BACK IN 1969. IT WAS SUPPOSED TO LAND IN THE PACIFIC, BUT ENDED UP SHOOTING FOR THE ATLANTIC. IT WILL BE EXCITING TO SEE THIS RECOVERY. SINCE WE STOPPED FLYINHE SPACE SHUTTLE, THE RUSSIAN SOYUZ SPACECRAFT. BUT NOT IN THE TOO DISTANT FUTURE, WE WILL HAVE CREW MEMBERS, THEY WILL BE ON THE DRAGON FOR THE DEMO TWO MISSION A LITTLE LATERHIS YEAR. EVERYTHING LOOKING REALLY GOOD, SO FAR. WE WILL CONTINUE TO STAND BY AND WAIT FOR THE ENTRY INTERFACE. WE ARE ABOUT 20 MINUTES AWAY TO ACTUALLY SEE DRAGON UNDER THE PARACHUTES. SO, NOT MUCH LONGER, GOOD THINGS . >> THERE IS A LOT OF ANTICIPATION, AND A CROWD GROWING BEHIND ME. OUR MISSION CONTROL CENTER IS JUST DOWN THERE. YOU COULD PROBABLY HEAR THE VOICES IN THE ROOM AROUND US, AND THE CROWD IS DEFINITELY TING TO GROW. WITH THAT BEING SAID, WE WILL TAKE A QUICK BREAK AS WE AWAIT FOR DRAGON TO RE-ENTER. STICK AROUND AND WE WILL BE BACK IN JUST A FEW. >> SO, WE ARE GETTING A BIT OF A TREAT HERE, YOU HAVE A LIVE VIEW INSIDE THE CAPSULE. IT IS GETTING CLOSER AND CLOSER, COMING TOWARDS THE EARTH AS ATMOSPHERE. BUT FIRST, WE HAVE A SPECIAL GUEST, SOMEBODY WHO WILL BE ON BOARD, NASA ASTRONAUT, BOB. THANK YOU FOR TAKING A COUPLE OF MINUTES. I KNOW YOU ARE FOLLOWING ALONG WITH THE TEAM, HOW ARE YOU FEELING ABOUT THE MISSION SO FAR? >> I THINK I SAID THIS BEFORE, SUPER EXCITED. OF COURSE, THIS ONE IS A PRE-OCCURS CERTIFICATE FOR OUR MISSION. WHEN THIS IS DONE SUCCESSFULLY, WE WILL BE ONE STEP CLOSER. >> THAT'S AWESOME. WHAT KIND OF PREPARATIONS DO YOU HAVE LEFT TO DO? >> WE HAVE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF TRAINING WE NEED TO GO THROUGH. SO, WE WILL WALK THROUGH ALL THE VARIOUS STAGES OF FLIGHT. PRE-LAUNCH, WE WILL DO THAT HERE, IN HAWTHORNE AND DO SOME KENNEDY LAUNCH PAD. AND LEARN ABOUT THE EMERGENCY ESCAPE, IF WE SHOULD NEED THAT, BEFORE LAUNCHING INTO SPACE. >>> AND THEN WE WILL HEAD BACK OUT HERE AGAIN FOR A COUPLE OTHER EVEN >> SO, WE ARE GETTING VIEWS INSIDE THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT. THE CAMERA IS OKAY, BUT IT CAN'T BE DOING IT JUSTICE. WHAT IS IT LIKE TO BE COMING BACK IN THE SPACECRAFT AND EVERYTHING IS HEATING UP. >> A COUPLE OF PIECES COMING BACK TO THE ATMOSPHERE. FIRST, IT IS EMOTIONAL. IT IS SPECIAL TO GO THROUGH THAT EXPERIENCE. IT IS A PHYSICAL THING, AS WELL, AS YOU ACTUALLY SEE THE LIGHT FROM THE ATMOSPHERE AS IT HEATS UP THE EXTERNAL PORTIONS OF THE SPACECRAFT. YOU SEE SOME ORANGE LIGHTS FLICKERING, THE PLASMA GOING PAST THE WINDOWS. IT WILL BE NEAR OUR FEET. IT IS DEFINITELY WE WILL BE ABLE TO SEE AND KNOW THE OUTSIDE SOMETHING PRETTY SEVERE, AND HOPEFULLY -- >> THAT'S INCREDIBLE, I CAN'T EVEN IMAGINE WHAT THAT EXPERIENCE IS LIKE. >> IT IS PRETTY REMARKABLE. THERE IS THE PHYSICAL AND EMOTION, YOU ARE TAKING ALL THAT ENERGY TO PUT INTO THE VEHICLE, SO THAT YOU CAN GET BACK TO THE GROUND SAFELY. >> IT HAS BEEN A WHILE SINCE YOU HAVE BEEN IN SPACE, IS THERE ANYTHING YOU ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO? WHEN IS YOUR BUCKET LIST ONCE YOU GET BACK THERE? >>M REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SEEING IT COMPLETELY COMPLETE. I WAS PRETTY CLOSE, WE PUT -- ON THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. SO, I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING BACK THERE, AND ACTUALLY EXPERIENCING SUNRISES AND SUN SETS AGAIN. THEY ARE REMARKABLE FROM ORBIT. NOT QUITE THE SAME THEY ARE FROM THE GROUND AND YOU CAN'T GET THAT ANY PLACE ELSE. >> LAST QUESTION FOR YOU, I AM SURE YOU HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING ALONG ON SOCIAL MEDIA. YOU HAVE SEEN -- HE IS NOT COMING BACK UNTIL YOU BRING HIM BACK. IS THERE ANYTHING YOU WOULD LIKE TO TEACH LITTLE EARTHY. >> I DIDN'T REALIZE I WILL EARTHY WAS STAYING ON BOARD. ONE OF YOUR PEOPLE FROM SPACEX LET US KNOW. HEY, WE WILL NEED EARTHY BACK, SO WE WILL BRING HIM BACK. I THINK OUR PLAN IS HAVE HIM TEACH US. HE WILL WELCOME U I THINK THEY TRAINED HIM WELL, AND HOPEFULLY HE CAN WALK US THROUGH THE EMERGENCY BRIEF, AND HE IS A FULL-FLEDGED CREW MEMBER. >> HE SHOULD HAVE IT ALL. >> AND TRANSFER IT TO US. THAT'S PART OF BEING A CREW MEMBER AND TAKES ON RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION. >> WE LOOK FORWARD TO HIM COMING BACK, AS WELL AS YOU AND DOUG IN A COUPLE OF MONTHS. IT IT WILL BE VERY EXCITING. >> VERY MUCH LOOKING FORWARD TO IT, AS YOU CAN IMAGINE. >> WILL GET BACK TO THE REENTRY INTERFACE AND THANK YOU FOR JOINING US. >> SO, WITH THAT, WE ARE AWAITING THE DEPLOYMENT, OR EXCUSE ME, THE FINAL PHASE OF THE REENTRY OF THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT, AS IT IT IS COMING THROUGH THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE, I AM STILL REELING FROM HIS COMMENTS WHEN IT L TO COME BARRELING THROUGH THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. SOMETHING YOU SEE IN MOVIES, BUT TO HEAR IT FROM HIM IS PRETTY COOL. >>> WE BROUGHT YOU A LIVE VIEW OF THAT A COUPLE MINUTES AGO. IT WAS COOL WE WERE ABLE TO GET THAT SHOT. PLASMA WILL BE BUILDING UP ON THE EXTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE, SO THERE IS A BLACKOUT PERIOD THAT WE WERE EXPECTING: THAT'S WHERE WE ARE AT NOW. >>> WHILE WE CAN'T BRING -- YOU CAN SEE A VIEW OF OUR RECOVERY SHIP. WE CAN NOW SEE THAT THE LIFT ARMS HAVE ACT WAITED OUT INTO THE RECOVERY POSITION, IN ANTICIPATION OF DRAGON BEING PULLED IN TO POSITION CLOSER TO THE END OF THE SHIP, AND BEING LIFTED UP TO THE RECOVERY NETS. >> YOU HAVE TO IMAGINE THE TEAMS OUT THERE ON THE OCEAN, ARE READY FOR THIS TO COME HOME. 200 GIVE OR TAKE NAUTICAL MILES AT SEA. THEY HAVE LEFT YESTERDAY. THEY ARE READY AND WAITING. A BUNCH OF SPACE TECHNICIANS WHO WILL BE RESPONSIBLE GOING OUT ON FAST BOATS TO DEPLOY FROM THE SHIP,NG THE CAPSULE STABLE, AND HOISTED ON THE SHIP. AND ALSO, PARACHUTES GET JETTISON FROM THE CAPSULE AT THE MOMENT OF TOUCH DOWN. WE WILL BE READY TO WATCH ALL THAT UNFOLD PRETTY SOON. WE SHOULD BE SEEING THOSE PARACHUTES IN ABOUT 10 OR 11 MINUTES NOW, RIGHT AFTER DRAGON PLUNGES TO THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE. >>> THINGS WILL REALLY PICK UP ONCE WE GET TO SEE THE DRAGON OVER THE ATLAN THERE. >> ABSOLUTELY. WE HAVE ABOUT TEN MINUTES, WHICH ARE THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE PARACHUTES. WE WILL TAKE A QUICK BREAK AS WE TAKE A LOOK AT DEPLOYMENT. >> SO, THIS IS A VIEW OF THE WV57 AIRPLANE. YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE DRAGON STREAKING THROUGH THE SKY, AIMING FOR A SPLASHDOWN IN JUST A LITTLE WHILE FROM NOW. >> IT IS PRETTY EXCITING THAT WE GET THE SHOT RIGHT NOW, AS IT IS OUR FIRST VIEW FROM PLANET EARTH OF THE DRAGON CAPSULE SINCE HE LIFTED OFF FROM CAPE CANAVERAL JUST SEVERAL DAYS AGO. >> I WILL SAY THIS, THIS IS A PRETTY RARE TREAT TO BE ABLE TO SEE THIS HERE. AGAIN, THIS VIDEO IS COMING FROM A NASA AIRPLANE THAT TAR FLYING AROUND T RECOVERY ZONE, WV57, COMMONLY USED FOR OTHER SCIENCE MISSIONS, AND WE WERE ABLE TO PUT A TRACKING CAMERA ON IT, AND TRY TO GET THIS REENTRY THROUGH THE EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE TODAY. HEAR THAT SHOULD HAVE SIGNAL BACK WITH THE DRAGON SPACECRAFT. RIGHT NOW IT IS ABOUT 64 KILOMETERS IN ALTITUDE. >> FOR ORIENTATION PURPOSES, IF YOU HAVE SEEN OUR LAUNCHES PREVIOUSLY, YOU MIGHT BE FAMILIAR WITH THE ANGLING, BUT A REMINDER THIS IS REENTRY, THE CAMERA IS BELOW THE SPACECRAFT.
