Per aspera, ad astra. Without their efforts, and sacrifice, we would be further from the stars.
Went to Kennedy Space center in October and saw the memorial there for Columbia, Challenger, and Apollo 1. Powerful stuff
I remember watching this on the news the morning after it happened. Such a bullshit way to go that could have been avoided.
Pieces of the shuttle are still out there, too. They pulled one of the internal fuel tanks from a farmer's pond a few years ago. It had splashed down and lain there since the accident, unknown by anyone, until the farmer drained the pond one day. My Google-fu is failing me, however, and I can't find any articles on it.
FYI the shuttles donβt have anti collision strobes nor do they have external hinges as seen at 1:50
Small side note: Astronaut Ilan Ramonβs son, Asaf, was killed in a plane crash just a few years after his father. They were good people and the world is a better place for having them in it.
I love the part where it said that Columbia was near Dallas when the breakup began. Sure, if to the west of California is considered "near Dallas."
Could have done without the Armageddon style music.
Is there a protocol in place if something similar were to happen with equivalent re-entry heat shielding on any future manned missions?
Could they sleep on the futon at the ISS while a repair mission was launched or the damaged vehicle was "repurposed" or abandoned?
Fascinating. I remember that. I m a complete ignorant. How is USA technology regarding space exploration compare with Russia???. I mean nowadays.
