right yeah sorry wait wait wait wait wait wait wait we still have to acknowledge the fact that chris jenkins has never seen christmas vacations here's the deal i we um where i grew up we didn't have tv i'm just kidding we did the mountains of north carolina we did have the television but my parents made us play outside they only had three channels right so um so they have made fun of me really corey has been in front of me for years because i've never seen what the first one that you just said christmas story story i have still just a classic i know and i know that's the christmas vacation the lego in the windows you'll see the name of the election in the front window yes yes never seen it it's really good don't even know what it's about i mean the christmas the story i guess you have a tv now though and you've had one for years so the excuse is i do i do i do have a tv now so i don't want to brag you got one now parent salary got you on tv okay uh quote number two let's see if we several classic christmas scenes it looks like a pink nightmare i just want to say this if you have never seen the christmas story can you like give me a thumbs up on they're not going to do that because everyone has seen it for 24 hours on christmas day there are negatives ridiculous even if it's by accident you've seen the show i've seen the movie if there's any of you that grew up playing outside please someone help me out please that's all i've asked no i only had childhood full of television 24 hours oh here's the good one so somebody said let's stump those singers since we have so many great voices on the stage challenge accepted name a christmas song that you don't think you can sing i've got one are you ready for this yes santa tell me do we know that one chris shall we tell what are some songs that y'all hate um dominic the christmas donkeys is probably one of my least favorite ones i've never heard that song before seriously yeah i really haven't never never heard it how did how does that happen they play it on the radio all the time i feel like that's a good how's it going it's like there's like a boom it's a donkey dude i'm not gonna do it put us in the key of g please i'm just kidding i don't know i don't know what key dominic the christmas zombie is straight mark your least favorite christmas song we already said it the the waitress is i'm sorry we'll probably get sued for that surely they're not watching right do you have a chris this is off the cuff do you have a christmas song that when you leave the congregation about pairing you every year even though you've sung it your whole life you go i can't remember these words every single one that's why come on are we wrong the worst thing is getting two verses mixed up the lyrics are two verses because like you sing the first half of like verse three and then you go off to verse four that's the worst or how about this when i put up a verse y'all are singing beautifully and then i put up the one that i thought we were singing and then everyone else starts singing the wrong one i'm like no pay attention yeah train wreck and then we're sweating bullets that's happened a few times because we don't know what to do at least have a christmas song go quick yeah we should go down the line yeah i said dominic the christmas donkey dominic yeah i have a album there's a neil diamond album christmas album that is just horrible i got it as a gag gift one year is a white elephant gifted at a christmas party it's like oh come are you faithful joyful and triumphant it's just like he doesn't really sing that's not a whole album so i guess we've decided next year sounds of christmas we need a segment of everyone's least favorites actually that would be a funny medley for us to make up um but i'm sure yeah i'm sure i'm going to offend somebody but i cannot stand bruce springsteen santa claus is coming to town cory when he gets to the end right now i thought i mean he is literally laying along on the there's a there's a vocal chord but this is the stage at the end and the whole thing and like he's a good assistant i think this one would be the outrageous facebook thing on the issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire roman world and everyone went to their own town to register so joseph also went up from the town of nazareth in galilee to judea to bethlehem the time of david he went there to register with mary who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child while they were there the time came for the baby to be born and mary gave birth to her firstborn a son she wrapped my claws and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them there were shepherds living out in their fields keeping watch over their flocks by night and the angel of the lord appeared to them and the glory of the lord shot around them and they were terrified but the angel said to them do not be afraid i bring great news that will cause good joy for all the people today in the town of david a savior has been born to you he is the lord the messiah this will be assigned to you you'll find a baby wrapped in cloth lying in a manger suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel praising god and saying glory to god in the highest heaven and on earth peace to those on whom with favor rest [Music] [Applause] so night of grace [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] is [Music] you [Music] is [Music] rise up my is so oh oh oh so oh oh oh oh so from the creation of the world god loved us in the warmth of a sunrise in the rainbow after a storm through signs and wonders promises and dreams he showed his love through the law through judges and prophets and kings through floods famines furnaces and fish he parted the waters led nations to new lands close the mouth of lions and bring down fire from heaven but in all that he had done he still did not understand the great mystery of his love so he did something we never imagined he grew silent but in the silence he was preparing us will you sing with me the angel did say was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay in fields where they lay keeping their sheep on a cold winter's night that was so deep nowhere shining in the east beyond them nowhere is the world awakened to the very presence of god on a quiet night in bethlehem the earth shook with a heavenly host announcing the good news that would change the course of eternity god's only son perfect and holy would come down to dwell among us but how would he come a brave warrior like joshua a triumphant king like david a bold prophet like elijah no in god's infinite kindness he chose a humble baby our infant god here with us this is the mystery of christmas and now our hearts are bursting with joy like the star that scattered its light across the night sky our voices ring out in praise we join with the angels come and see what god has done the story of amazing come and see what god has done story of amazing love the light of the world given for us [Music] [Applause] this divine gift of god has come [Music] a gift of love for you and for me what a glorious mystery [Music] [Music] in thanksgiving for his amazing love could we stand together this morning and just offer our gratitude and our praise to honor our king [Music] he has come [Applause] [Music] oh can we [Applause] [Music] [Music] ah one of the most amazing parts of the christmas story to me personally is found in luke's account of the angels appearing to the shepherds out in the fields of bethlehem when the angel of the lord appeared to those shepherds they brought them the message fear not i bring you good news of great joy the savior has been born to you this day this will be assigned to you you'll find the baby wrapped in strips of linen and lying in a manger it is that phrase lying in a manger that is so intriguing to me think of that the god of creation lying in a manger what a strange place to find god a manger is a feeding trough for the sheep bethlehem means the house of bread in hebrew it was the home of david who grew up there as a shepherd who became the king of israel bethlehem is a small town five miles south of the great city of jerusalem it was and it is to this day a town of shepherds i've been to bethlehem barbie and i have a few times and taken groups from the church as we've toured the holy land i've seen the shepherds out on the hillsides of bethlehem jesus came born in that town out in a stable because there was no room for joseph and mary in the inn the hotels were full so the only place they could find available was a barn a barn for sheep and in the barn they made a baby's crib out of a manger in our visits to bethlehem at the church of the nativity there's a place beneath the church where you go down on the tour and they show you this stone area a natural feeding prophet that is the traditional site they say of where jesus laid we don't know that for sure but it was somewhere like that and it definitely was in bethlehem you know nothing's in the bible by accident so why is this phrase so important to luke when he tells us the christmas account that he puts it in there lying in a manger this phrase tells us something about god and about his son jesus and it tells us something about the way we should live our lives god so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son lying in a manger tells us of a god who created the world and was willing to allow his son to enter the world take upon himself our humanity to become an atoning sacrifice for our sins that we might have eternal life god's love for you is not measured by temporary success or material blessings or everything working out the way you hoped it would as great as those things are god's love is measured by far greater standard it is measured by his son lying in a manger god who is willing to give up everything so that you and i might be saved from our sins god so loved the world you know the bible says in first john chapter 4 verse 18 the perfect love cast out fear because the one who fears is not made perfect or complete in love and when we don't realize that god loves us and that god cares about us we live with deep-seated fears and anxieties but god loves you with the love that is so great he's willing to put his son in a manger to save you and to give you eternal life lying in a manger tells us something about jesus the son of god who came into the world the messiah king of kings lord of lords one who could work miracles the very incarnate son of god now make mistake about jesus is more than a man he is god the eternal god who took own human form he took own a human body but he is divine first and foremost in fact the christ in the manger is the god who created the universe he was with the father the dawn of creation in fact john chapter 1 verse 3 says of jesus all things are made by him and without him is not anything made that was made and here he is lying in a manger the creator the son of god enters the world taking upon himself a human body that he can live among us walk among us teach us the word of god show us the love of god and ultimately to give his life as an atony sacrifice for our sins on the cross and to rise again on the third day that we might be guaranteed eternal life jesus lying in the manger tells us about the humility of jesus paul the apostle puts it this way in philippians chapter 2 verse 5 through 6. your attitude should be the same as that of christ jesus who being in very nature god did not consider equality with god something to be grasped but he emptied himself took on the form of a servant he humbled himself became obedient to death even death on the cross you know we live in a world of pride and arrogance self promotion and a lot of people take more selfies than they do pictures of other people we live in a time where there's a high focus on the self what's in it for me and yet here is jesus a far greater example lying in a manger he's willing to humble himself to take on the form of a servant that we might be saved in fact the night he went to the cross at the passover meal as they shared what we call the last supper he said his disciples in luke chapter 22 verse 27 i am among you as one who serves here is god lying in the manger the son of god came lived among us as one who serves and in a time where people want to be in charge what a great reminder to us as followers of jesus christ that we too should say to others i'm among you as one who serves go to work to serve them at home tell your family i'm here to serve you in the church be a servant jesus lying in the manger is a reminder to us of the humility of jesus the king of kings and lord of lords who ultimately was willing to wear a crown of thorns to give up his life to take our place to take our sin and take our judgment that we might be saved what a savior what a servant and the phrase lying in the manger then tells us that we need to walk in humility means a dependency on god a recognition of god's blessings in our lives not taking things for granted of giving god praise for every blessing and every accomplishment in life humility is paul saying in first corinthians chapter 15 verse 10 i am what i am by the grace of god humility is jesus saying to us in matthew chapter 5 verse 3 blessed are the poor in spirit for theirs is the kingdom of heaven humility is peter the apostle right unto us who saw all of this in the life of jesus and learned about humility and he says to us in first peter chapter five verse five and six clothe yourself with humility because god resists the proud but he gives grace to the humble there are so many amazing life lessons in the christmas story here's one of the greatest the little phrase lying in a manger a god who's willing to give up his son because of his great love for us the son of god who's willing to put a rope put aside the robes of divinity the splendor of heaven to take on a human body to come to live among us that we might see who god is and he enters the world the great god of creation the son of god lying in a manger and what a reminder to us an encouragement this year to walk in humility that each of us would take on the form of a servant may this christmas spirit the spirit of a servant really be found in you and me join me for prayer father we praise you that you are willing to give up the splendor of heaven for us your love for us is so great lord jesus we praise you as our savior our king and our god that you are willing to enter this world in such humility that we found you lying in a manger to know your love care for us and i pray that during this christmas season the real christmas spirit the spirit of humility and the spirit of a servant may be seen in all of us in jesus name me oh is my counselors uh my is know about the earth is tell the world yes you
