the sony a7s3 is perhaps the quintessential youtube camera so many channels lean on this tool and for good reasons too the sony a7s 3 has everything you need and a lot that you don't from a videographer's perspective however its 12 megapixel sensor does hold it back as a stills camera especially considering its 3 500 price tag the question is could there be a camera maybe a thousand dollars cheaper with minimal compromise on video quality and nearly three times the resolution well there is now in 2022 the sony a74 but what are the real differences how do these tools compare is the a7 s3 still worth a thousand dollars more well i'm sorry to say it's not that simple and we're gonna have to take a deep dive all right so what do we really even need to compare with these two cameras so i'm going to be comparing them on three different factors stills quality video quality last but not least usability and i want to start that process off by taking a look at just the physical controls of these two cameras and the first one would be the exposure compensation dial so sony's ever since the original a7 have had this manual exposure compensation dial and with the a7s iii they actually added a much needed lock to the exposure compensation dial because if you were like me you found yourself bumping it all the time with the a74 sony actually decided to do away with that single purpose for it maintaining that lock function which i think is is pretty cool and then enabling you to set this to do anything so the next thing that we're going to be looking at and that is that sony opted to move the little finger cut out for the flip out lcd screen from the top right hand corner to the bottom right hand corner of course the operator's corner and to me i think this was a really strong move because flipping the lcd screen out when wearing gloves with the a7 s3 could be kind of tricky for the biggest change that they made is of course this additional mode dial on the mode dial this to me is significantly more intelligent than the way that they that sony used to do this canon and nikon have both in the past had something similar where the camera has a photo mode where the camera is set up to shoot photos and a video mode where the camera is set up to shoot video now the s3 was actually one of the first cameras that allowed you to have for example different function menus for stills and video as well as a number of other features there so the s3 was actually a big step forward but the a74 takes that hybrid shooting to the next step even though this is a huge super nice feature i'm really happy the a74 has it i don't actually miss it very much on my s3 and the reason why i don't miss it that much on the s3 is that the s3 really isn't very much of a hybrid camera to begin with i mostly just have all my custom modes one two and three set up for video the fact that i can't set up a one two and three for stills as well like i can on a seven four really doesn't bother me that much that brings me to the next category we're gonna be looking at which is stills image quality because i've actually owned the sony a7s3 for about a year now i have found myself in a number of situations where i have needed to use this camera to take some pretty awesome photos that i'm pretty proud of or i've been able to pull out some raw files from some time lapses i have shot with this camera i think the thing that's really important to understand before i make a very strong recommendation maybe the strongest recommendation i'll make in the entire video is that the sony a7s iii is not a complete and total loss when it comes to photos you can absolutely take amazing images with the sony a7s iii and if you're going to be largely sharing those via social media or let's say in a magazine format where it will not be blown up particularly large i think many of us will find ourselves not noticing that loss in quality very much however the sony a74 just is a better stills camera i think personally that the autofocus is a little bit more reliable just a little bit more updated since it's about a year and a half younger but i think even more importantly than that you just have that additional resolution on the a74 that really is signature in 2022 the ability to crop your images i personally think is a huge deal and take advantage of the sharpness of sony's incredible primes and the third-party lenses made for sony that are super sharp here i have an example of my favorite shot i've taken on the sony a7s3 it is a panorama of the maroon bells and then another shot that i took on the a7s3 that is of sunrise in the sand dunes these two images i love them and i just frankly wish i had taken them on a higher resolution camera that brings us to the biggest comparison in my opinion and that is the video quality i i realize that for most people it's probably actually the stills comparison but for me it's the video comparison of the sony a7s 3 and the sony a74 i've got the 90 mil on the a74 and hopefully i'll be able to keep straight which one i'm holding up when i'm talking about them we'll see they are shockingly similar while these two cameras may look similar one place that they are definitely not similar in is in their iso performance while both perform quite well they perform very differently starting off they're extremely similar with dynamic range and noise performance up through the low isos at about 1600 you might notice that the a74 actually begins to look significantly cleaner and by the time you reach 3200 it is obvious that the a74 is outperforming the sony a7s iii this may surprise a lot of people because well it's the sony a7s3 everyone thinks of it as the low light king and this is this difference actually only gets more extreme as we continue up 6400 and at 10 000 if there is no comparison the a74 is dismantling the sony a7s iii funnily enough though if you tick up to the sony a7s 3's second high base iso which is twelve thousand eight hundred uh the sony a7s iii surges back into the lead the a74 still doesn't look bad though uh even at this iso and as we continue up however the sony a74 quickly falls apart while the s3 continues to perform quite well so the sony a7s iii definitely is an extreme camera when it comes to the iso 12800 is as clean as a lot of cameras are at iso a thousand however at iso 10 000 the sony a74 absolutely dismantles the s3 it's a very strange situation and definitely one that i'm sure some sony engineer could explain to me in more detail but practically it does mean that the sony a74 is no slouch in low light and in many shooting situations may actually offer you more flexibility with your iso and exposure than the sony a7s iii does however because that iso is so fantastic at 12 800 the sony a7s iii is still the low light king you just have to make sure you can get it to twelve thousand eight hundred never shoot the sony a7s three at ten thousand iso unless you're shooting an example test to show someone how gosh awful it is there's a couple key points that i wanna make about the difference in video between these two cameras and i think that the first real key point that i want to make is that the sony a7s iii really is still overall a better video camera the the real thing about the a7 s3 is going to be image consistency and performance consistency so i've owned the a74 and i know overheating is a big thing people talk about with this camera i have never had the a74 give me any issues i've shot a wedding with this camera i've shot a ton of youtube videos with it i've shot some other client work with it as well and i've never even had the warning pop up a lot of the reason why i've never had that warning pop up though is because if i'm concerned at all about it overheating i just use the s3 and i never have to worry about it whatsoever the fact that i can change frame rates on this i can shoot in 4k 60p there's no crop there i can shoot in 4k 120p and there's a very minimal crop same bit depth same color sub sampling all that stuff remains the same on the s3 as it as it does in 4k 24p the image is extremely consistent these little features the fact that this has less rolling shutter than this camera does all of that just means when you hit record and you you record something and you bring it back into the editing studio you're just not going to run into as much drama and from a professional's perspective someone who's maybe getting paid to shoot someone's big day someone who's maybe under a lot of pressure you know you've paid a lot of people maybe the the clients paid actors to come in you don't want everyone standing around because your camera overheated if you're a professional spend the extra grand and get yourself an s3 or a little bit more and get an fx3 but if you are not let's say a professional if you're not working for clients basically i think that this argument becomes a lot more complex even for video first shooters there's a couple reasons why first of all there's one frame rate that this camera has that this camera doesn't and that is 10 80 240 frames per second i have to be honest with you i'm not showing any b-roll right now because i've never shot any 240 frames per second now maybe you have a plan to use that for shooting some birds taking flight or maybe you want to shoot some skiers doing something but honestly i think 4k 120p is the reason why you buy this camera to begin with but if you're looking for a 120p good 120p footage yes the a74 excuse me has got you covered it's got 120 frames per second in 1080 that is good clean footage um it has 4k 60. yes there's a crop but it's pretty good 4k 60 as well and i believe i mentioned in a different video as well that to me i think that there is an argument to be made that having a little bit of a crop in 4k 60 maybe isn't the end of the world um i think that the rolling shutter on this camera is once again work aroundable go into the aps-c crop mode uh maybe use a 10 to 18 millimeter and just use the aps-c mode for vlogging i think that you get better results with that or um actually sigma makes that 16 millimeter f 1.4 i think that's an amazing option to work around the rolling shutter issues on this camera um and i i just think you're going to be just as pleased with this and that thousand extra dollars could pay for a lot of other equipment could make the the process of saving up for your camera a little bit easier or just the financial hit a little more palatable and i want to get a good camera in your hands plus this is a better stills camera than the s3 is so once again professionals working with clients working under pressure i think the s3 is the answer the quality improvements are a big deal i think that if you are mostly shooting for yourself or for fun or you're getting started 100 of the time sony a74 and if you shoot stills very much at all a74 is the answer the eagle eyed among you may have realized that the sony a74 here actually uh i would say handily won two out of the three categories we discussed i do think the a74 is a has many improvements in regards to the handling of the camera both the hybrid switch all the things i pointed out there are just improvements and upgrades from what we found on the a7 s3 and kind of no surprise it has better stills quality i doubt anyone clicked on this video expecting me to say otherwise so i think that that honestly kind of brings me to my point that i think about two out of every three people looking at these two cameras probably should pick up the a74 but for that remaining third people who really care about video or are under a lot of pressure on video sets doing weddings different things like that the s3 is still unbeatable in my mind i did another video comparing these two cameras to the r5 as well which kind of packs all the features of these two into one i definitely recommend checking that out but it definitely i still think for that third of people that group of video shooters specifically the s3 is still king it's king across the board i think you can make an argument for some of the new flagship cameras that are that are coming out at the moment and of course camcorders like the fx6 or canon's c70 but despite all of that the s3 is still video king in my mind and in my system thankfully i don't have to choose i get to keep both of these cameras and we'll continue to use them for the foreseeable future i hope you guys enjoyed this video definitely check out that a7 s3 a74 r5 comparison video next that's a great one to check out so i'll link that here at the end card and i will see you on the next adventure
