so hello and welcome to the summit bid youtube channel today i'm out in the garden of the gods with the new sony a74 and a couple other cameras as well that i would like to talk about today the sony a74 finally dropped at the end of 2021 and brought with it a number of upgrades over its predecessor the sony a7 iii a nine megapixel bump 4k 60 up from 4k 30p 1080p remained the same however there were some bitrate improvements there the camera of course is full frame as it was before um it had an updated ibis system with a half stop improvement but it also remained at 10 frames per second for still shooting so the cameras i have out here are my two two of my other cameras the canon r5 and funnily enough the canon r5 was kind of added to my system as a response to the a74 not existing i really needed a camera that was good at stills but also good at video offering me features like log 10 bit internal recording while also having good stills chops now undeniably i probably went a little overkill by picking up the canon r5 but i don't necessarily regret that decision still to this day however i would say that with the sony a74 finally being out my canon r5 is a little bit on the chopping block today so we're going to talk about that some possibly in another video but the other camera i have with me is the sony a7s mark iii but i've been using this thing a ton over the past nine months or so and enjoying it loving the image but undeniably the weak point or the weak spot on this tool in comparison to the a74 and the canon r5 is that this is not really a good hybrid camera now in the end for me that's okay i don't really need a lot of good stills features most of the time and certainly i have the ability to own another dedicated stills camera such as the canon r5 or the sony a74 as long as they can still serve a purpose in a video production which i think they both do you know at least separately perhaps not together but we're going to be out here testing this camera to see if the stills performance can compete with the canon r5 and the video performance can compete with the sony a7 s3 right so the biggest feature that these two cameras have that the sony a74 doesn't from a video perspective um would most likely be the 4k 120p and the fact that the 4k 60p is cropped now it is an aps-c crop which i actually think in rare occasions can actually be a helpful thing um for just giving you that little bit of extra reach with your slow motion getting you just that much closer to your subject but in the end this is a somewhat frustrating thing and something the a74 has been panned for many times at this point but the fact that this camera does not shoot 4k 60p in full frame is a pretty big loss when considering both the canon r5 and the sony a7s mark iii both feature that and of course they both bring 4k 120 frames per second to the table the funny thing is is that these two cameras kind of sit on the opposite ends of the spectrum from a video perspective this camera gives you reliability you can shoot 4k at 120 frames per second all day long i've done this at wedding shoots in the mountains client shoots etc and been very impressed with the reliability on this camera the image is amazing and you can shoot this camera all day and never have to worry about it it's really an incredible artistic tool it has lots of latitude in the in the 10-bit 422 4k image that it produces while it's not the sharpest camera it's certainly gets the job done whereas on the opposite end of the spectrum we have the canon r5 which i would be willing to argue and i think i would be backed up by all the evidence is actually a camera that produces a significantly better video image than the sony a7s iii is capable of doing while in low light the sony 7s3 in my experience does take a lead even though it's not down sampled in every other situation the canon r5 is capable of shooting a better image because it is down sampled from h from 8k down to 4k and then the factory can also of course record 4k as well is just a really nice feature but funnily enough both this camera and the a74 which we're going to be jumping into more in a moment have some idiosyncrasies with the 4k slow motion but both of them do have a sharper 4k 24 and 30p image so we're going to be talking quite a bit about that as we jump through the hoops of whether or not it would be worth it for you to still purchase something like the sony a7s iii because the sony a7s iii is significantly less capable as a stills camera than the canon r5 is then of course the other thing we're going to be looking at today is the stills features on the sony a74 i'm going to be showing examples of images i've already taken on the sony a74 and taking a few more as the sun dips here in here in the garden of the gods today so the funniest part in my head about the sony a74 for stills is that the biggest competition for it might honestly be something a little bit more like the sony a7iii or the nikon z62 so there's a lot of cameras that have arguably just a little bit worse stills performance that actually come in significantly cheaper than this camera does if you don't really care about video at all and you're just looking at this camera as a stills upgrade from your sony a7 iii what are you really getting the main thing is going to be an improved auto focusing system as well as a improved sensor i did use the sony a7 iii for quite some time but i did really enjoy that camera as well most of the improvements though i would say arguably ninety percent of them are going to be on that video side of things with you know kind of that exclusion of the af system on the sony a7 4 being a little bit improved as well as the 33 megapixels as opposed to 24 megapixels now how much that's really going to affect your real-world results it's difficult to say but for my first shot today with the sony a74 and i'm also going to grab it on the canon r5 is going to be behind me here on the top of this rock pointing that direction at the main garden rocks so i'm excited to you know do my first little test here the lighting is starting to get a little bit a little bit side lit maybe a little bit warmer we're not quite to golden hour yet here in colorado springs and here this time of year in january the sun's going to actually go behind the mountains around the time golden hour would maybe start so we're going to be spending a lot of our time today in kind of a dusky situation so i want to get some dynamic range shots i've got the tamron 70 to 180 on these on the sony and i have the 24 to 105 on the canon r5 so i'm actually going to shoot both images at 100 millimeters and 105 millimeters just so that they match up that could make the composition a little weird though all right so i'm like shooting over the rocks here 100 millimeters is not the ideal focal length for this composition so i'm also going to take a couple a little bit wider than that because i do think that that's going to be a better match if i'm being completely honest i didn't pick the best i didn't pick the best spot for this but you know we're gonna get some more shots this isn't the end of it quite all right so now i have the canon r5 in hand all right so here we have just a quick side-by-side comparison of the canon r5 and the sony a74 zoomed in all the way here it does appear the sony is a little sharper i do want to point out that that is most likely because i was using the tamaron 70 to 180 at its sweet spot which is about 100 and i was actually using the 24 to 105 for canon at its weakest point but you can also see that slight difference in resolution as well so this is a good example of what you might be able to expect very similar in the end anyway i probably have another 15 minutes of sun so i'm gonna hang out up here grab a couple more shots with the a74 of a few different angles um and the pike's peak is over my shoulder here and we will move on from there it's very interesting you know coming out here in this kind of light because i wouldn't normally you know be out here this time of day this time of year necessarily this is a really special area you know personally to me it's it's got a lot of uh sentimental value i've grown up here lived my whole life photographing the the rocks up here and uh running the trails around up here you know so it's it's always fun even when it's not necessarily the most incredible conditions to you know photograph in places that mean something to you you can see pike's peak behind me here um and that should offer a somewhat interesting dynamic range test for the sony a74 since of course we have quite a bit of sunlit terrain as well as quite a bit of in shadow terrain as well [Music] [Music] all right so i just switched back to the sony a74 this is another great dynamic range for video of course scenario where i am definitely in the shadow and uh the sky behind me is very bright so curious to see how this turns out currently i'm metering at 0.0 so it's saying this is a proper exposure so i'm curious to see how it looks on the monitor it looks a little blown out potentially but and my shirt looks wrinkly oh boy look kind of rough today shaping up to be an absolutely gorgeous evening my goal is to get up to one of my favorite locations in the entire park easily which overlooks sleeping giant and here let me bring you guys around so you can see them [Music] i no longer buy that this is properly exposed okay i'll buy that's properly exposed so we're heading up to kind of right in front of sleeping giant and the volcano rock gray rock tower of babel depends on who you ask exactly what the other one is i prefer grey rock to be honest with you i think that's the most mysterious sounding name perhaps i don't know mysterious volcano rock sounds kind of basic [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] you know if you are looking at this camera i know the temptation absolutely if your budget is about 25 to 3 000 2500 to 3 000 the temptation definitely is to you know pick this camera up uh i question whether you should do that or not to be completely honest with you i think that you may be happier with a something a little bit more affordable with a better lens the kit lens that comes with this camera is the 2875 and frankly put is not my favorite i think for most photographers and videographers being able to have something wider than 28 mil is important and being able to be a little faster than five six at 70 mil is also very important oh man the light's looking good up there gonna have to hurry try not to miss it we are losing the light super fast [Music] you can literally see it going away [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] oh it's crazy how quick the sun goes down here because we are well the mountains so the sun just like dips so fast from the light you just saw to just completely gone it's crazy um every time it kind of surprises me um beautiful beautiful though and i think i got some like last second kind of okay shots of it they're kind of dark i didn't fix my exposure rookie mistake oh so [Music] all right so i don't know how well you can see me down here but the sun you can see it cutting across the front of pikes peak and it is still hitting kissing camels [Music] and i don't have a great i don't have a great way of being able to see it um besides standing very precariously on these two rocks beautiful place love the view pike's peak from here and you can see all the main garden rocks except for gateway which is also really awesome but yeah let's head up to the top time constraints make us all do very funny things taking the s3 let's go try to get this photo [Music] [Applause] [Music] hey ended up using the or needing to use the worst stills camera i've got to take maybe the best shot of the day i'm actually not confident that it is but it could be um i just love that tonality up there all right so let's talk about the in the field conclusion i have two incredible cameras here and both of these cameras one for video and one for stills are definitely better than the sony a74 i honestly think that as a stills camera though the sony 74 is going to outperform the sony 7s3 and as a video camera i think it's really close i think the canon r5 still probably technically wins that battle but for certain videographers in certain situations the sony a74 may even outplay this beast i would say the biggest advantage you're going to have with the canon r5 though is that it is it does have that 4k 120 and it does have the 8k as well i do hope to explore in a future video the ak on this camera in depth and this the canon r5 and 2022 as well as the sony e7 s3 and 2022 and where they land right now the sony a74 though has definitely a great spot in my kit and will likely end up replacing the canon r5 in the end um i haven't made up my mind yet maybe i can flash up on the screen when this video actually goes out what my decision finally was but i may be keeping this camera anyway we'll see because of some of the video features i still want to explore on it but as a stills camera for me the sony a74 absolutely provides better value for money i do not need 45 megapixels i don't need 33 to be honest with you i just would like to have more than 12. but thank you so much for watching this video definitely hit that like button if you learned something and if you want to see more content on all of these cameras including the a74 definitely subscribe we're going to be having a lot of exciting stuff coming out over the next year or so we're really excited to be producing a lot more content hopefully on creating better photos and videos so definitely subscribe and i'll see you on the next adventure you
