Still can't believe people whined about the Bel Grano getting rekt
I only recently learned about the Falklands War. It's a fascinating piece of modern war history. British victory was far from guaranteed and, on paper, the Argentinians brought a very respectable force to the table, particularly in the air. The issue was lots of unreliable or lackluster equipment leading to failures, and range issues with launching air attacks from the mainland (they did not forward-deploy their air force to the islands themselves). Through sheer force of numbers, they probably could have swarmed the British task force en route and sunk most of them had they launched from the islands, and had the fuel in reserve to simply outrun the Harriers with their superior A2A missiles.
The British also caught a lucky break in that Argentina had only taken delivery of five Exocet anti-ship missiles ordered before the arms embargoes. Of those five, two successfully sank British ships, one of which narrowly missed the Invincible following a chaff deployment, and acquired and sank a transport instead.
Even with their subs taken out early and their navy forced into port by the British submarine threat, the Argentinians could have destroyed the task force if they'd been able to muster more numerous air attack with greater bomb and fuel loads and more Exocets.
I'm so glad to see Mark's videos on here. He makes outstanding content. It's like the History Channel never went belly up and started pumping out alien shows.
Man Brit ship naming is so very wonderful.
HMS Splendid, Spartan and Conqueror.
I like the US style names but the Brits really have a bit of flair.
