[Music] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] foreign my uh following that the large number five Mustang [Music] it was [Laughter] [Applause] primarily as a fighter escort for the bombing missions over Europe [Laughter] a sort of greenhouse style canopy like the hurricane has later variants such as this one but most people associate with this aircraft that offers staggering performance [Music] [Music] thank you [Laughter] [Music] it's foreign Air Force [Music] foreign [Laughter] [Music] foreign [Laughter] thank you [Music] [Laughter] typically the Mustang could be equipped with any combination of up to six machine guns 10 Rockets maybe a bomb slung underneath the the belly if you fancy a another run from the P51 see this is the thing got the chance to fly one of these you're not going to stop easily aren't you thank you for the chance to fly the glider being the gorgeous Elliott of Newbury Olympia to be at this team Anderson in March of 1935 and it was finally the last example he rule capability yes it was from a design called the Avro model 652 all right flying cross through my area Personnel 11 000 in the world left in airworthy condition most were built in the UK some were built over in Canada on the license [Applause] [Applause] blocking Hudson and Armstrong Wentworth quickly arrived it became obsolete and also the visibility [Music] yeah the perfect one and this is my experience 11 19 editions of that production it was one of those foreign foreign foreign thank you one having been used by the British organization foreign let's go and you can see that on the tail it Bears the shark emblem s helicopter display team now the number four setting up for an opposition fly past flying this time in the middle of the threesome formation and they're Now setting themselves up in Concord formation this ready to run in straight towards us thank you Pilots to Richard Mitchell Andrew foxley and the Usher and Kev Matheson foreign [Music] [Music] flying school aerobatic team at Circa mid-1930s there were some problems with the lynx engine the 240 horsepower seven cylinder engine in the front which led to it having to be totally rebuilt a few years ago [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] and I know for many people here we included the sound of those Gypsy major engines on a summer's afternoon is uh a reminder of childhood [Music] [Music] it's Magister the Maggie trender I came the first RAF modifying Trailer Service This World War II broke out or in the UK and one now in the Czech Republic which came over from Argentina I don't know the Majesty of course was that the RAF wanted [Laughter] 140 miles an hour typically cruising at about 120 and low stall speed as well have around about 40 42 miles an hour with the flat stone [Music] [Music] [Music] closed [Music] [Music] actually it turned out to be fairly unnecessary modifications to the tails for owner however one of the nice things about the layout of the Airfield here you get a different perspective with the dog leg that's possible around the control tower and that short uphill Runway that the Chipmunk has just touched down on dude [Laughter] some sixty percent of the Battle of Britain uh to the hurricane alone the shuttle was sea hurricane um Mark 1B was built in Canada in 1941. it was built with the purpose of protecting the North Atlantic convoys that were heading to Europe and then around the top of Norway into Russia taking advantage of the fact that the port of murmansk remains ice free year round foreign [Laughter] how did you get back onto the ship indeed because they had no flight deck well Pilots either had to ditch or to bail out later see Hurricane's range would be extended by the provision of drop tanks for extra fuel capacity allowing them hopefully to make land the other issue was that the early hurricane were rather tired air frames which sometimes have been produced as far back as before the war [Music] in my second body in the mess at breakfast time before you took to the skies with intent the intention is to join us for the next element of our display here as part of our military Air Show [Music] thank you to those who served in the European theater was the U.S Army Air Forces particularly those of the Eighth Air Force stationed in such huge numbers here in East Anglia and currently one of only two examples of this aircraft type now flying in the world in Europe remarkable in private hands on the display circuit despite all the effort and expense in doing so since 1975. it's that most beloved four-engined American bomber the Boeing b17g Flying Fortress named Sally B [Applause] Vega works team that learned about the UK just stepping aside from the Sally B for a moment if there's a David Hibbert around David Hibbert if you could come to the gate by the control tower that would be appreciated David Hibbert thank you [Applause] the operations by b17s of the Eighth Air Force in the European theater that Sally B commemorates or examples of true heroism to remember around about 15 000 feet as a Flying Fortress and typically it was crucified about 250 miles an hour at 25 000 feet you might be thinking why was it nicknamed The Flying Fortress um 13 machine guns at various positions around the fuselage is the answer before the Mustang's arrival Spitfires Limited in range compared to the Mustang carried out that role and you forgot the word frightening because we see these aircraft in each time being displayed in all their Glory gave back to their cost but it's fun to say the aircraft was highly respected by improved because you could take a real pounding and if you Steward a Google type search you know the search engines are available foreign [Laughter] for the first time this season [Music] major Kelly on the number three engine black yellow jacket just slowly in memory of Ellie's partner who was the uh the insulator of people [Music] yes it was earlier this year the U.S Federal Aviation Administration mandator checks on all their Worthy b17s in their worthiness directive relating to the aircraft's fire attachments activities [Music] the aircraft's still in the markings of the 91st Bomb Group and with the Sally B nose art on one side and Memphis Belle on the other has first applied for the 1990 feature film of that name depicting the b-17s model stationed with the 91st Returns the final passing Fortress Saturday racer considered at one time by the air Ministry for a special act speakers [Music] [Laughter] thank you yes all the pilots who flew it several times during its racing career was Arthur clouston for example he flew it when it was named the orphan we're talking about this very airplane of course in the 1937 Marseille Damascus laborge race and again to set a London to Cape Town record when it was known as the Burberry sponsored by the clothing manufacturer [Music] which remains Jewish industrialist about using this is airframe somehow disguised to form and kill Hitler in his motorcade during a ceremonial parade in Berlin such a distinctive looking aircraft hard to see how Lincoln is thank you a youngster back in 1951 and your mum and dad took you to the Festival of Britain that year spend it from the ceiling in one of the display Halls at the festival of Britain before she was restored to Flying condition over a number of years thank you though [Music] [Applause] [Music] it's appearance of the 1930s but also very clearly an example of the books thank you and one can well imagine why the air Ministry felt this was an aircraft that could have military airplane with one aim initially in mind to win that Robertson Airways [Applause] [Music] oh yeah okay attributes of the design as far as its performance was concerned well obviously as you can see it's very highly streamlined as your Note is head on teams whether that person is continues tonight it's your personal space but the aircraft is controlled by computers and satellite navigation nothing is left a chance but when this aircraft was racing to Australia in 1934 it was all done by dead reckoning of course to refuel [Applause] this to your left ladies and gentlemen it's very special the Vic is super Marine Spitfire mark one [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] foreign foreign [Music] that's it [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Music] thank you [Music] [Music] [Music] 5 1A what can you say a little more functional that was the Sako j-20 [Music] [Applause] that is the service in 1964 a sequencies support to factory research and support operations [Applause] [Music] engine up there developing some 340 horsepower and driving a hustle of the power ful [Applause] it's almost come rather back into vote in the early 1990s most of them had already been retired foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] foreign aircraft that first flew in 1946 had a useful load of about a thousand pounds a range in excess of 750 miles and good capabilities in terms of being able to operate from rough or short Fields 1100 of them were turned out by North American Aviation before Ryan bought the design rights in 1947 they built about 1240 more and then various other companies took over manufacturing after that is Electronics by the National Guard and later the Civil Air Patrol [Laughter] many of them have survived in climate foreign [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] today the Aussies said that their versions were going to be called the were away the US Navy called there's the snjs it is the T6 Texas it's also carrying six bombs on the stub wings that could be mounted onto the spats and that unusual Wing design was the result of role experience passed on by RAF Pilots which highlighted above all the need for an excellent field of vision from the cockpit [Music] [Laughter] s we've had fully automatic stories although hopelessly outdated with the introduction of the rapidly developing technology that saw newer and newer aircraft coming in I Almost Do It a weekly basis the war unfolded as I said this aircraft flew itself into the animals of aviation history thanks to his air taxi roles with the Special Operations executive very very serious indeed many of the secret agents or Joes spent their final days and weeks in country houses in this neck of the woods and flew from bases in bedfordshire Cambridge here northamptonshire [Laughter] Phillips in the dead of night with the assistance of the resistance Fighters into a certain death [Music] Lysander was designed by Teddy [Laughter] that they mounted from August 1941 until the end of 1944 with lysanders fitted with an external access ladder and long-range fuel tank under the fuselage as you can see on this example [Music] [Music] there is a very interesting book and I've mentioned it before and I've got a copy somewhere but I don't know if it's still in print it might be an Ethernet search it was called the Bedford triangle It Was Written probably two and a half decades or so ago by a norwich-based fireman and Keen amateur historian and it pieced together the history of the Special Operations that took place in this general area both the final training period for the jokes and their flights from Fairfield so cool [Music] the Fleet air arm of the royal Navy flew them in that role so did the U.S Eighth Air Force which had a number of ex-raf lysanders transferred over and then there was the Royal Canadian Air Force in this example was built by the national steel car Corporation of Moulton Ontario and it served with the Royal Canadian Air Force as a Target Target in a very distinctive bright yellow and black striped scheme arrival one of the things that we had here is the meadow area where the lifestyle I thought this was built not far away that first of all in Luton in 1955 until the mid-1960s [Music] to see the development process that leads to the eventual jet province in the late 1950s an early 1960s foreign [Music] they could move on more easily to the jet stage at the time with the de Havilland vampire some of the Navy Pilots also received training on RAF promise more I wanted is up to that point the Russians have been using versions of the British World War One outbreak 504 trailer which they developed an aircraft that they designated the YouTube regiment that this aircraft came into its own you see the night which is created nocturnal Havoc against the Beluga German infantry on the Eastern Front they flew in low and slow because they couldn't do anything else in this particular aircraft distinctive sewing machine sounding engine it was actually almost impossible to shoot down Soviet Union during the early to mid 1930s there was one with an enclosed or rather several but one version enclosed with foreign [Music] [Laughter] now [Applause] in fact one of the fact is that produced home twos 46. namely in the Soviet city of Kazan In fact when they stopped building these aircraft to production was transferred to a factory roster of old dog foreign [Laughter] [Music] conditions today flew in combat with both of those czechoslovak squadrons there was also number three one one spot formed in July 1940 which started out in former command or thickest wellingtons te 517 [Laughter] [Music] foreign thank you [Music] [Music] well regressively as you may have guessed the pilot decided to cut the spitfire's appearance short today just protected a slightly rough running engine so just scratching absolutely the better part of valor and decided to bring the machine into land so well that's a slot we'll just have to repeat on another day [Music] and here they go the 2023 Royal Air Force Falcons person display team so they immediately deploy that kind of piece and you could see the smoke trailing from them and remember what I said we're looking for six initially and then three on the flags is this so they immediately begin to form up into their snake formation one behind the other one okay [Applause] [Music] is it so as you can hear they are working extremely hard with the wind conditions so they're out of the Carousel and they're now going to get themselves ready to line up the smoke is lit on the Drop Zone ready to receive the parasitis and in about 10 seconds there'll be a height where they can hear you so please shuttleworth oh Warden do give a huge share and Round of Applause for the guys it really encourages them yeah fantastic keep that going [Applause] foreign [Applause] [Music] foreign [Applause] [Applause] [Applause] fish [Applause] thank you very sexy conditions today as easy as ever implied [Applause] [Applause] and what's going to happen now just to let you know is so the salute for those of you can see down the front of the Airfield today is thank you and so a few hours delayed but perhaps of the more welcome for it thanks to the efforts of the battle of British Memorial flight in making it here today in spite of the wind conditions earlier today that we've seen on the program today the first of course having been the Boeing B17 Flying Fortress [Laughter] [Laughter] all right [Music] foreign [Laughter] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music]
