[Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh dear [Music] [Applause] thank you [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Applause] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] of course that the ethyl conditions deemed just that little bit potentially slippery to allow the Spitfire 5 of The Sea hurricane and the average lines a very cool programs [Music] thanks [Music] and then we have a real treat if the weather permits we're going to see a double slot from the egg audience today we've got the Bristol box kite and the Avro triplane reproductions and the genuine levio 11 and deploy Plus in the same slot the slightly later remarkable indeed English electric Ren foreign [Laughter] Birds May sometimes grab the headlines these airplanes the three of these are represented of true British flying history but I know like me you are a passionate fan of these Golden Era airplanes the support of the shuffle with veteran airplane Society to join the mugal which joined the fleet here at the end of 2013. and long-term collection still but the comet thank you for the house part in the 1937 King's Castle in the hands of Ken water finishing in 12 position [Music] foreign linked inextricably with British aviation history it was the airplane which won the King's Cup in 1938 [Music] as for the hawk speed six the right most of the three aircrafts we look at them now it's King's campaigns cup with the whole thank you but we're now right foreign [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] test won the Le Mans 24-hour race for Lagonda alongside his co-driver John Marsh that was his retirement from London racing he then turned aircraft as it appeared foreign [Music] 's feet in setting that London to Cape Town record was quite extraordinary when you consider the very rudimentary equipment at this disposal [Music] [Music] [Music] again you'll hear that crackle from the exhausters foreign somewhat different the third and final one was the m2u model open conflict with a 220 horsepower Gypsy 6r engine optimize four races [Music] of the hawk speed six with the cockpit covered by a small Coupe top the machine is admirable for those who wish to get about quickly on business but want the advantage of an open machine with a cockpit which can be closed at will I'm not sure whatever the Pack's the most practical position um another controversial here is saying this is probably as one of three comets that took part in the 1934 mcrobertson international air race from the then newly opened RAF milk Hall in Suffolk Melbourne Australia [Music] but also many notable fights after this is Kirby green such a New London to Cape Town record which would soon be beaten by the new girl [Music] as well as three comets that took part in the 1934 mcrobertson international air race from the then newly opened RAF milk Hall in Suffolk in Melbourne Australia [Music] but also many notes remains only even now [Music] not only is this one of the most historic airplanes in the shuttleworth collection it's also it's got to be sent one of the more demanding to fly doesn't have his good slow speed handling with Tom Campbell black formed the crew that flew this aircraft from Milton Hall to Melbourne in 1934 told the BBC reporter before the start that he'd never flown a twin engineer plane before he took the controls of Grosvenor house foreign executed wheeler Landing there keeping the weight on the undercarriage till the very last minute and then allowing the tail skid to bring the airplane to a standstill [Music] oh and since then the comet has flown in the vast majority of displays here it's attraction that never diminishes apart from Dodge in the comet we had Paul Stone our current chief pilot with the hawk speed six and it was Mark Sharp handling the mugal oh contract oh contact contact [Music] Aces to score Hills [Music] foreign [Music] six we had three the other two were sold overseas making the value of this one all the greater as a member of the shuttleworth collection and of course I'm used to be using the crosswind runway here or the cross Runway which is actually into wind at the moment and as well as minimizing the need for the crosswind again it's avoiding cutting up the grass as the Bristol fighter rolls gently to a standstill no breaks across the fixed tail skid and the minimum of wear and tear on the grass unlimited Royal collections that is the Royal chipmunk if you have the Chipmunk in which you can charge the third actually wants to fly against his first server and indeed even got his private certificate we'll talk a little bit more about the glider later on a fully aromatic Rider and very very sporting League 150 horsepower engine the ideal tow shift to get the glider off the ground in time to altitude unique to this airplane which was illuminated when his Royal Highness as he was then was flying he means keep well away this airplane indeed started out as purely an ordinary chipmunk built in 1952 at the de Havilland Factory at harden near Chester and he had a host of different service assignments up until 1960. at that point the Duke of Edinburgh Prince William of Gloucester and Prince Michael of Kent all required flying trainings were all replaced and it was painted in this bright red scheme [Music] 1961 and that Beacon has forever been nicknamed The Paris actually it's quite interesting one or two for space for many years is a great name for that airplane but it's as agile as any other do you have on a chipmunk it's flown by a Syndicate and very enthusiastic owners now based here at Old Warden that made its movement s are literally just a few miles down the road [Music] University Air Squadron the next day 4th of August 1968 the aircraft was flown from tanglia back to its base at Benson the job of instructing Prince Charles was entrusted to Squadron leader later group Captain Philip penny [Music] during his first two and a half years at studying at Trinity College of limits foreign [Music] so he is was and is an accomplished Aviator [Music] first in today's display unfortunately all the available examples are suffering unserviceability additional airbrake uh very nasty and stylish approach and kick straight just to land and that is how Yolanda chipmunk very nicely flown by Bob Brinkley one of The Syndicate members who owns this airplane and I can hear it and I can see it's on the right ladies and gentlemen not Lancaster [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Laughter] foreign [Music] [Laughter] [Laughter] outside I know you get helicopter then [Music] foreign [Applause] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] as many students have done in circuits and bumps what you're doing is you're keeping the wing down into wind you're aiming to position it in a three-point attitude with a tail skid and the wheels touching at about the same time gentle pullback on the stick and it descends to gracefully nicely done special mention there troll [Laughter] [Music] s essentially the naval one for the Royal Navy and the French navy with a wield of the carriage and the battlefield helicopter for the British Army Air corps as here with skids though later on the use of a wheeled undercarriage on the Council of links 3 project led to the later link Smart Life the Army Air corps also being equipped with a wheel undercarriage [Music] yes the Western links is probably one of the most successful British helicopters [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] thank you in 2017. [Music] it was then that he was acquired by Graham Hinckley who's owned many historic helicopter and fixed Wing types he intended to use it as a static showpiece he's gone in front tonight [Music] [Music] [Music] America so you sat in the back seat of that swordfish together hair although I I did both [Laughter] well we'll go back to David in just a moment and David I've got to say it's incredibly Sprite soon to be centenarian information up [Music] here I I hope I am absolutely sure it's a privilege to make your day uh David and uh [Music] [Applause] [Music] thank you [Music] I can't even hear them [Music] [Applause] [Music] no one already said [Music] [Applause] laughs [Music] foreign [Music] [Applause] [Music] um [Music] put more time [Music] [Music] that's with Peter kosagoren in command as you will have noticed are red white and blue formation albeit taxiing out at the order white blue and red all flying Union Jacks the aircraft that initially went under a designation to conjure within the animals of British military Aviation tsr2 let me explain albeit in this instance TSR standing for Torpedoes Potter reconnaissance is following on from an earlier private Venture design the tsr1 the Navy wings fairy swordfish well by the time we're all broke out the swordfish was famously outmoded [Music] thank you thank you the primary role for many swordfish was protecting the convoys bringing food and supplies to the European theater from a submarine jungle report ing today we were talking about the camp the civilian armed merchantment which they used to fly from a small deck on top of a merchant ship carrying supplies that was the length feet radio set and the 0.303 inch Lewis machine gun Observer would be sat in the center cockpit performing navigational duties navigate our Observer was perhaps the most important person to be on the ferry South in the fire fairy swordfish [Laughter] [Music] [Music] radial engines together Pegasus performance of all the celebrations 40 where 21 aircraft like this effectively put the Italian Fleet out of action for the remainder of the war there was the chase after the German battleship Bismarck during which a swordfish put a torpedo through the much feared vessels steering gear after which the home Fleet sank it with gunfire and then there was what became known as the channel Dash a mere six swordfish attempting to stop the German destroyers Prince Oregon scharnhorst and gunize now from moving through the English Channel from West in France to Bill Helms hoffen in Germany ships that were very heavily defended by destroyers e-boats and aircraft all six swordfish were shot down their commanding officer Lieutenant Commander Eugene Esmond being awarded the Victoria Cross for his heroism during those actions the southern Market available [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Laughter] [Music] going to be swordfish under Stinson making their way back to yellowton as you say it's a steady probably 18 off cruise with the uh the swordfish these things are distracted by by David saluting with his friends Naval hat uh crewmates in the swordfish estate taxi to depart [Applause] Ed spoke on the radio [Laughter] [Music] famous [Music] by Martin furniture notice a Welsh Dragon himself on the way to the garage [Music] [Music] wonderful Aero engines built down in Bristol by the Bristol airplane company the abused by the Royal Air Force that says from the 1930s it's quite into the second world war there's a lovely story about a RAF reservist uh [Applause] the mess and the German Pilots stood up and in perfect English toasted the cost of gladiated pilot saying I've just been shot down by a solicitor Gloucester Gladiator was developed from the gossip Concord with a cantilever under Carriage they stayed probably our air front line [Laughter] they had an active part in the Norwegian and Middle Eastern campaign to be early to be the point of the second world war of course there's the famous faith hope and charity roster Gladiators in the defense of who's actually preserved by the Gloucester Aircraft Company who donated it to the collection in 1960. information [Music] [Applause] foreign and if you look just behind the engine cowling underneath the cockpit canopy you can see the two machine gun installations the air industry functions when the monoplane Fighters came along a couple of years later a lot of Pilots actually be moaned the fact it had an enclosed canopy saying that it made them isolated from flying and you see today the airplanes quite often flown with the canopy slid back down there and here indeed in front of us now is an example of the western Lysander the mark 3A model this representing what was the first monoplane type to serve with RAF Army Corporation command replacing two Hawker bike Lanes the ordax and the Hector pair of Ford firing 0.303 machine guns on English and Gladiator also a bit of a Cutting Edge a airplane look at the flaps on the wings we need to um [Music] we've got their 870 horsepower from the 25 meter capacity by a Kia supercharger it was also one of the very first engines to take advantage of the new 100 octane Legend Aviation [Music] overseas as well as the 21 pounds produced by Bristols number were built by Peter Poland and also the Czech Republic YouTube training doors to absorb the landing [Music] I think I am correct to say this is the oldest flying Rolls-Royce engine in the world um a very robust engine very strong engine and also not just listen to the engine though listen for the wind in the wires because the Bristol fighter is known as somebody referred to as I mean like an arm professional fights only Barts hackers and yeah was the pilot of our Gladiator for this place especially in comparison with other two seaters of its time [Music] in Russian to switch rapidly in the course of the mission from offense to defense and vice versa and it made it into a much feared opponent that much was born out of Supply the success of any Pilots but in particular the leading principally as well as being a respected adversary for his opponents it was actually very much loved by its Pilots it can't be described as a light airplane to fly but [Music] um [Music] minor changes foreign designed to go into military action they chose this configuration and I wish excited a migrated configuration the Harry Hawker actually did multiple loops on his main flight in the aircraft somebody said it looked like something falling down a flight of spares and just over a fortnight later he was deemed ready to begin evaluation by the Royal Naval Air Service and by the end of Duke remember is it only just flow between us that was a very definite connection with the collection here because the Clayton and shuttleworth Company in Lincoln it was that great polymath of vintage Aviation SKU Goldsmith flying it for us today a man who from one weekend to the next can be seen at the controls of the most enormous variety of vintage airplanes across the British display circuit [Music] [Music] [Music] Liars the Germans rapidly realized and this design the Schneider sg38 uh ever two of the information to play struts chool I will be designed that we have a very swordfish known as tsr2 the designation later in the history of Aviation regularly referred to as the polycarp of o2 is not known as such until 1945 this in Myriad rolls and we use for agricultural purposes they were used as air ambulances passenger transport even with close cabin ET foreign connection in 2004 and the comprehensive restoration work began thank you very period comedy called the slow Pacer in the sky which established this aircraft's considerable legend in the USSR but also the belief that it was flown largely by female Crews foreign [Music] Pilots flew a total of 23 672 wartime missions and dropped more than 3 000 tons of bombs on the enemy 23 women who belonged to that regiment were awarded the title of hero of the Soviet Union thank you they were operated it wasn't just Spurs it is a career to 53 the North win deployed the O2 as a knight Intruder taking advantage for others and this an aircraft that have been designed back in the 1920s [Music] and it very much is a 1920s airplane the fact that it stayed in service into the 1970s in some areas as box sprayers okay and you can see what I referred to as in the titular position in the pilot seat of the primary it's rare that primaries in their day ever went this High the primary was designed as a primary trainer for climbing and in Germany and later in Britain this is actually a British example built by the furniture maker Elliots of Newbury otherwise known as an eon and these were used in the days before dual instruction was available for glider pilots and from the 1930s into the even the 1950s you did your initial flights at low level in one of these primary gliders they can thermal they're not very good at going into the wind because they've only got a thermaling speed of about 28 miles an hour but the glider as you can see can float along it's got about a one in eight a one in seven grade angle so it Glides about the same as a paper cup with the engine off but it was the initially you would do ground slides sliding along the ground and in fact you could even put this aircraft on a pedestal a gimbal which would actually let you train using the controls pointing the aircraft into wind you fly to judge the landing and fly with a little bit of surplus of speed because the speed is your power effectively and as we saw earlier with grain saw you can actually judge it perfectly and almost roll it to the stop where you want it this is a little bit more approximate but even so you watch out again for the energy management here with the glider turning downwind turning now into wind with a view to bringing it safely back onto the Airfield and onto the runway foreign [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] the original se5 was powered by 150 horsepower Hispano squeezer engine and first flew in November 16th only 77 of these were built before the engine was replaced by the geared 200 horsepower and engine to create the SE5A they continued in service right up to the end of the war with 5265 being melted and it wasn't just used by the Royal Air Force it formed the basis of the American flight detachments which arrived in France in 1918. [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] foreign ER aircraft used over the Western Front the SE5A late World War One Survivor actually into supporting service into the 1920s and was also used right private the software Pub uh really was the airplane that cemented the role of the software Scout as a score for an aircraft it's like it's agile it's powered by an 80 horsepower of around 9 cylinder originally engine and a single biggest pain machine gun [Music] thank you after the war I'd major Jack Savage for his skywriting business sorry and for the science museum in London up on the top floor you'll actually see in the aircraft Hall there the aircraft's sister aircraft's still in its skywriting configuration with an extended pipe from the exhaust pipe to the table of the aircraft into which is called hot oil to the hot exhaust to allow it to generate white smoke this aircraft was found suspended from the roof of Armstrong with this fight shed and quickly in 1955 was restored furthecation by staff and apprentices at re farnborough he's been flying hold off now with overhauls on a regular basis since 1959 [Music] sock with puff actually has an even longer shuttleworth collection she's got her original registration ebky and she carries the colors of a ship bomb Pub which served on HMS Max [Music] [Music] bloody Elsa [Music] that wasn't a break oh [Music] yeah this will indicate the jump master that the landing area is dangerous and they shouldn't jump to that excited to see if where you are but there's three kind of views on the left hand side what these are these are trying to create what we call and crew formation so canopy at the rear is going to crash into the back of the canopy on top and then from there they'll attach together by locking their legs in between the lines of one another and then they'll climb Downs of their face to face and I believe they're going to attach to the hip and create what we call the kansi formation this is where two people assisting on top of the first kind of thing on either side of it also right up at the top and the right hand side but we've got a 2 000 square foot Union Captain flag ship so our first man coming down towards the ground now this is our jump Master for today's Corporal Wayne short house big round of applause for sure too thank you so our current formation for today's and Sergeant Nation Fisher [Applause] foreign [Music] thank you very much [Music] [Laughter] [Music] foreign [Applause] foreign sometimes [Music] [Music] foreign positions on the ground in order to detect the first glimmer of daylight between the grass and the wheels such was the excitement engendered by seeing one of these newfangled flying machines for the first time [Music] before that design even been fully tested Sir George White should authorized the construction of a further 20 box kites they were sold as far afield as South Africa India and Russia [Music] [Music] is absolutely beautiful [Music] these aircraft were responsible in is a British Aviation for many firsts they were used for early military experiments over Salisbury Plain they were also Long training substance by the time World War One [Laughter] and there's the Box gate shuts down house around because both for there's two girls have been gone the box tonight and really in the car to talk very much indeed and here it is on the roll an English Electric Red 100 years later again [Music] oh we'll see a few years ago the only way we got off the ground here was by launching it with a bungee Airborne today very sensitive operations to find some work done on the ABC power plant a few years ago since when it's been able to perform rather full of fines the case to stop them into the area the temperature on the on the ground instead of these wet temperatures [Music] there is a damp patch about here and it's amazing how much a little bit of moisture and soft ground will slow an airplane with this marginal ization it's downhill uh it's looking a little bit more inspired down here this time keeping going straight ahead and keeping it climbing foreign [Music] [Music] thank you foreign
