ladies and gentlemen i would like to introduce you to the sure mv7 yes we're going to be putting it head-to-head against the sm-7b which by the way is going to be a very unfair comparison but don't worry we also have a few other contenders here that might be a bit of a better challenge this is gonna be a lot editing i can already tell this is aiden wolfe [Music] [Music] [Music] there is nothing more exciting than a microphone launch i gotta say all the anticipation building up to well this pegged is somewhat of a successor to the sm7b or i guess as they put it inspired by but to be honest all the parallels were drawn to the sm7b and well i do have some thoughts on that we can jump into that in a bit now this microphone is 250 and as far as i can tell it is in stock on amazon which is a nice perk considering how this year's going for gear it's a dynamic microphone with the only polar pattern available as the cardioid now a very important distinction if you are a studio nerd like me it does not have sm in the name and on sure's lineup that sm stands for studio microphone so i think this is their way of telling you the limitations on this mic it's not meant for studio use and it's being marketed to streamers podcasters and well the talkers in fact they released an article on how to decide between the two microphones the sm7b and the mv7 and in the first paragraph they actually tell you if you want an sm7b well just buy one basically meaning the sm-7b will still reign supreme as you can probably tell as we switch back and forth between them i mean there really isn't much of a competition here now when we're doing the comparisons i won't be treating any of the microphones other than boosting them up in post this will be a fair look at all the mics in their untreated glory and at the end of the video i'll give you a glimpse of how i will treat it as well as my final thoughts on whether or not this is actually worth your money and as always if you want to check out any of these mics on amazon and i've got a lot of them i'll have the links below any purchases through those links do go to help the channel of course i will be testing through xlr for the most part though i will have a sample of the usb later on in the video as well though i don't expect any real major surprises now as for build quality this thing is built like any other shure it's basically a tank it's all metal construction the grill is impossible to bend all in all it's a really sturdy weapon i mean if you need for that the sock does leave a little bit to be desired as it's nice and thick to fill out the nose of the mic around the sides but the business end that's kind of thin and it does leave it open to plosives now the cables that come in the box they're pretty standard at 10 feet usb a to usb micro as well as a usbc to usb micro the xlr connection point is solid there is no real play though the usb connection does feel mushy as is expected and i'm not convinced it's the long term with it as it is with all usb micro connections it's pitiful which leads me to one small complaint on this thing it's 2020 why are we not using usbc on everything i'm sick of having to keep all these different cables and frankly the usb micro is the worst of them all just stop it also of note is this mic is both usb and xlr so you can actually choose between either or frankly record from both if you want if you want those two recordings of the same thing for whatever reason this thing can do it now this is the one massive selling feature on this mic as it gives it universal appeal for studios that are just starting out or perhaps looking for the next stage in their home studio evolution now here we are on the usb and i gotta say i do love the controls now they're all touch and there's a button for headphone volume or mic gain as well as a mute button on here now this is where i do get to my second complaint though the two buttons on either side well they are a pain in the butt to hit especially if you have sausage fingers like mine it will become less of an issue if you tilt the mic down or if it's oriented the other way around but i do see this as being the popular choice on the boom arms in this kind of setup so i'm not sure there's going to be problems if you're fumbling with it trying to hit that mute button as for the usb sound well i don't think it's all that bad in fact some reviewers actually prefer the usb sound to the xlr personally i think that comes down to personal preference as well as whatever interface you're running the mic through if you're using xlr i prefer the sound of it through xlr on my audiofuse studio your mileage might vary that being said i do think this might claims champion over all other usb options it's really decent and part of that is due to the features that come with the companion app for this thing okay let's actually turn the audio down just a little bit on this microphone there we go so that was using the touch uh top there now of course this is the sure plus motive we're gonna put this in the middle now you'll see in here you've got the auto level and you've got the manual i'm gonna go with manual because auto leveling why bother you might as well just turn the mic on and just whatever so you can actually play with the game here as you can see i'm gonna keep that down around there you can also you can also mute your mic as i just did there uh your monitor mix you can go between uh low latency or playback whichever one you want now the eq is interesting so we're on flat right now and i do find this to be a very uh kind of a punched up mid already and you can put on the high pass and this is what the high pass sounds like it just it rolls off everything so it takes even more that that lower end out then your next stop you've got the presence boost and this presence boost really does uh bump up the mids even more and then you have the presence boost and high pass and that's what this sounds like um i'm not a big fan i i kind of like the the midi or the flat eq frankly i also like to eq my own content so if that's not for you if you don't want to be going in and eq'ing later on uh maybe you will want one of these presets for me it doesn't really work now a limiter is basically something that will kind of stomp down the really really high frequencies that might actually peak and i'm going to try to do that and see what works hi this is aiden so you can see uh up here on the graph how it limited to negative three or just under negative three but it still really did um it clipped a lot there and you can tell there's a lot of distortion in this so that's why i'm not a big fan of the limiter uh just so you know if you want to try it out you've got a lot of yellers in your group maybe try it out it'd be a nice little option but it's not going to do you a whole lot of good now for the compressor and this is kind of the cool one move it over to light compression you can tell the voice gets a little a little thicker okay it sounds a little more broadcasty and you can move it up to medium to get even more and you can actually see as i'm moving them up my voice is becoming louder and the audio log is just becoming a little thicker now i guess if you really need it and you move it up to heavy that's going to be a very full mix and yeah the compression on this is is nice it's not horribly offending however i do have to say not going to work for every voice it's not going to work for every situation or room and that's really important i would really strongly suggest if you're going to be using compression keep it on light and you know you can always boost in post but you shouldn't be double compressing audio so you shouldn't be compressing something a second time so if you compress it here and you recompress it later on in post it can actually cause a few problems if you go into the auto level uh you're basically gonna get the same thing only this is the near setup for the mic this is the far set up from the mic i'm actually about a foot away from it and it's you know it works it just boosts everything up personally i like the near you get a little bit more resonance now you do also have tone so this is the dark tone which i really don't like this is the natural and this is the bright which it i don't really like the sounds of any of these tones i like the natural i like where that sits okay so that is the shure mv7 uh and all of the mic setup in the sure plus motive app that you download for your computer now we head back to the xlr now the handling noise isn't all that bad but it does have some issues with resonance when it's bumped which is unusual for a sure product and frankly kind of a bummer now the noise rejection on this mic is however quite decent as you can tell as i turn the microphone around you'll notice that the noise rejection becomes better and better that will definitely be a decent upside for anybody that wants this mic in a bit of a noisier environment and while we're mentioning selling points here's the biggest it's the gain considering this when comparing it to the sm7b anybody should be able to drive this even if you're hitting a hundred percent um compared to the sm-7b i'm driving this at approximately three o'clock my sm-7b is at five o'clock so that should tell you how much less gain you need to drive this microphone and it's even better in usb now for sound quality well it's good and considering the price of the mic that shouldn't be too surprising but i do find that it kind of lacks in the lower end in fact that is one part of the sm7b that i actually wish they included this microphone is more mids forward while it's nice and clear i don't think it's going to be as universally nice on everyone's voice kind of like its older brother but i think the real test is in the comparisons let's get this thing set up and we'll go between the two as well as everything else i've got here first up we have the sure mv7 and right beside it we have it's daddy um i guess that's weird isn't it okay this is the shure sm7b this one's sitting at three o'clock on the gain dial and this one's sitting at about five o'clock on the gain dial and this is how they sound compared to each other the shure mv7 new the shure sm7b old which one do you like now we have the shure mv7 up against a similarly priced microphone the re 320 this is my electro voice this is what the mv7 sounds like its gain is sitting at three o'clock as per usual and this is what the re 320 sounds like with its gains sitting just under 3 o'clock this is the mv7 this is the re-320 now these microphones go for about the same amount of money so i'll let you make your own decision on that and we're back once again we have the sure mv7 and this time it's taking on the sure sm58 we would really have to put these two mics up against each other because this one is 250 dollars well this one is only a hundred and this is how they sound and i'm gonna have to point out the sure sm58 isn't exactly known for its wow factor when it's on camera this one does however have a little bit of a wow factor so which one do you like do you like the shure mb7 or the shure sm58 for sound next up we have the shure mv7 once again sitting at about three o'clock on the gain dial versus the sennheiser e835 this is much like the sure sm58 very similar mic similar price a great performer similar in almost every respect to the sm58 its gain is sitting just under three o'clock on the dial so do you like the sennheiser e835 or do you like the shure mv7 last but not least we have the shure mv7 going up against the road pod mic now this one costs 250 dollars this one costs about 150 depends on the price i've seen it as low as 100. this one's sitting at about three o'clock on the gain dial and this one is sitting at about three and a little bit on the gain dial this is how the shure mv7 sounds and this is how the rode pod mic sounds now they both have similar appealing characteristics to them for a podcast or for a studio and i know this is the one that a lot of people have been asking me for so let me know which one do you like is it the shure mb7 or is it the rode pod mic i hope this clears something up for you so i guess it comes down to my overall thoughts and i'm going to start this out with a bit of a complaint this microphone is not an sm7b this is a completely different microphone that looks like an sm7b and the problem i have with that is simple i feel like this was marketed as a cheaper alternative to the sm7 when it's a completely different mic as you can hear even some of the influencers that receive this microphone for free are touting it as an alternative and i really don't want you spending your money thinking that this is a sure mv7 and it is a standalone mic that just happens to look like the sm-7b it's almost like sure ripped themselves off in their own design but with that in mind well it's still a great mic kind of now as an xlr microphone it's okay it's going to get the job done especially with the off off-axis rejection of noise also the gain is great compared to other mics of its ilk like all the ones i tested here today but honestly if you're looking for a strictly xlr mic there's a ton available in this price range so then what does make it a good buy well if you want a usb and xlr mic this is going to be one of the best the sound quality is going to destroy most usb mics on the market hands down the included software while limited is still a great add-on and to be honest if you had to choose between a sure product and any other that offers usb sure is going to win almost every battle also if you do want the design of the sm7b without going broke it's really a nice looking microphone and frankly not everyone can afford the sm7b as well as all the other gear that you need to drive it so sure buy one but not if you only want an xlr microphone so what do you think of the comparisons which mic do you think beats this one is it going to be your next mic let me know down in the comments thanks for watching if you like this video give a flying elbow to that like button if you really liked it though try that other button that says subscribe on it not sure what it does but see what happens anyways thanks for watching and i'll see you in the next video
