SHOULD YOU SELL ON ETSY OR SHOPIFY?

[Music] hi guys and welcome back to my channel so on today's video i'll be comparing shopify and etsy um i personally use both so i'll be able to give you some insight on what i personally like about each website and what i don't like about each website so let's go ahead and get started um i'll give you a little bit of my background on where i started so i started my business two years ago and i started on etsy um i just wanted something that was quick and easy to get up and etsy was my go-to um it was easy to get my listings up and it basically ran itself so i started in november of 2018 and i got my etsy up and the sales just started and i was amazed i was like there's no way that this is just happening you know i wasn't promoting it like that or anything so um i definitely liked etsy in the beginning not saying i don't like it now but for a new candle maker and starting out on etsy and getting like 100 sales within two months it was amazing um why did i switch to shopify so i um wanted to switch over to shopify once i realized that etsy had a lot of limitations um so you weren't able to you know customize your domain and make it www dot what you want your business to be um you weren't able to like edit anything it was basically it's basically a search engine for you trying to shop in a nutshell um so that's why it sells itself so if you're selling bracelets and you put bracelets then it's going to list all the bracelet companies that's on etsy which is fine um and like i said it gave me the sales and it was amazing but as a creative i just needed more um i wanted to create a website i wanted to create something of my own that my customers could go to um so that's why i made the switch to shopify and i don't regret it at all um i made the switch to shopify and it literally took me no lie like two to three months to learn shopify i ain't even i'm not even exaggerating that's the bad part um so shopify gives you one month free um to try it out before they actually start charging you and the cheapest plan is the basic plan for 29 so i am still on the 29 plan i probably be on that 29 plan forever because i don't see any point of increasing the plan when this plan does everything that i need to do um so i recommend that etsy on the other hand um has two plans it has a standard plan which is free and it has the um what is it called the etsy plus plan which is ten dollars um i compared both of them when i first started out and i didn't really see the need for the plus because it didn't have that many extra perks to it so i just stuck with the free which works for me so they both have good plans um etsy has a free plan shopify has the 29 a month plan so that's as far as pricing goes um let me see what else i said so the pros that i have so let me just go through shock let me just go through etsy i'll start with etsy first um i like i said i like etsy because it sells itself in a sense once you get your listings up and get everything flowing your ceos and your pictures and you know you have your shop looking nice and cute it sells itself you know that's not something you have to promote because it's always gonna be there so i i like the i like the idea of not having to do so much like every now and then i'll have to get on there and update my pictures or update or add a new listing or you know change a little something around but as far as it goes it really runs itself now the cons to etsy that i found was you know not being able to have anything custom as far as you know designing wise goals and also the fees so yes etsy may be free but they charge you like 20 cents for each listing and on top of that you get charged um it's like a lot of hidden fees i i could i could try to break them down but i can't so say if i sold a candle for my cameras on 1450 on etsy plus this shipping um so the camera come out at 22 by time i buy my shipping label because you're gonna buy your shipping label right then it's going to deduct the shipping label directly off of your candle price so instead of me making that whole 22.50 i'm only really making 12 13 after i paid for that seven dollar shipping label so it's just little things that i wish i could you know tweak when it comes to etsy but like i said it runs itself so it's a little it's low maintenance if that makes sense i don't really have to do so much to it as if as is i do my shopify now my shopify that's my baby i i got to get on it i gotta look at it i got to look at my products i gotta look at my theme i gotta make sure my fonts right but as a creative i enjoy that so if you enjoy creating and you know designing and you know making something look cute then you'll enjoy shopify so let me go ahead and get over to shopify because that's what i'm currently at um so i really like shopify the first thing i did was i brought my domain i please buy your domain buying your domain even if you're not ready for shopify is very important because locking down that name before someone else gets that name is critical um i knew i wanted to be her candle company and i wanted to say.com and i would have been crushed if i would have gotten online at first saw there was another her candle company within and second if i had to be org or dotnet like it just don't sound as good as dot com am i right so um i definitely was so happy when i found her candlecompany.com um and i just sound so efficient when i say it like people ask me all the time oh where can i get your candles i'm looking like her cameracompany.com hello shop with me anyway see how i got off a topic topic i really like shopify um it is the only i don't really have any well i do have one con um back when i said that shopify was just 29 shopify itself is just 29 now in order to get that cute website that you desire you gonna spend a little bit of money and what i mean by when you're gonna spend a little bit of money is um in order to build your store you have to basically get these apps that's inside of shopify um i'll try i'm going to um post a picture to show you what i mean as far as the apps go and they add up so yes my website only cost 29 but when i got three apps that cost like fifty dollars now i have to add that on top of that so it can get pricey as as you build your website i might have a few apps that i per i need in order to make my work make my website run away run so i pay that money for those ads monthly um apps monthly but you know in a nutshell i really do enjoy shopify um like i stated in the beginning starting out with shopify can be a headache um i recommend so i recommend just taking your time and teaching yourself how to do it when you teach yourself how to do it um you can always go and change something so yes i could have paid someone to go in and design this wonderful website for me but every time i would need something tweaked to change i would be reaching back out to that person to change it because i don't know how so my main focus was teaching myself how to run shopify so that i could run it smoothly as possible um i'm going to do another video probably um in the next couple weeks on just shopify alone and how to get started in the basics um basic shopify 101 if you want to call it um or how i basically run my store and how it runs so smooth i love the analytics when it comes to shopify they break my numbers down to the dollar and i enjoy that i enjoy seeing where my money where what's going on like what candle is selling the most what fragrance is selling the most how i did this month versus how i did that my where my traffic is coming from so shopify has amazing perks um etsy doesn't have those type of perks so what i recommend for start off with etsy if you if you're looking to get from saying dm mises because i don't like dm he says start with etsy start with etsy at least have something for someone to shop to check out with and from there teach yourself how to work shopify um and once you learn how to work shopify then you can decide if you no longer want to do xc i see a lot of people who started off with sc who now have a website who don't even do etsy anymore um and i feel like i've reached that level where i don't need etsy but being that it runs itself and i don't really have to do so much i'm like why not just keep it um currently it's down because i have to update all my listings um and it's a lot to update each individual listing um so that's a project of its own um but my website runs well i see how many um visitors i get um a day a week a month and as far as i'm concerned people are gravitating to my website to the point where i don't need my etsy so maybe um the first of the year i probably will get rid of it all together and just focus fully on my website because during the holidays it can be a lot to juggle because like i said it's they they they just they just find you you don't have to do much so the orders just come and they just come and it just come on top of my website it can be a lot to it can be a lot to juggle at the same time so that's something that i have to consider let's see which is my favorite well clearly you guys know which one is my favorite i'm a shopify girl i love shopify um when i first got on it i was like lord what is this but i watched a few youtube videos um and i just played with it that first month i really played with it and i had the option to either leave and go somewhere else or to make it work so i i chose to stay there and make it work and now my shopify runs as smooth as butter baby it runs smooth um and it's and it's a good site there um customer service is amazing every time i've chatted with someone every time i've had a question i've always been able to get my question answered in a timely manner they have chat they have good customer service as well um and it's just an overall good platform to use i recommend shopify and i recommend etsy as well so that's about it that's all i have for you guys um i'm going to be doing another video on breaking down shopify 101 because i know i'll get a lot of questions as far as you know the domains and the themes and building your shopify um because it can be a lot and
