speaking of critique oh Heracles asks speaking of critique what would be the most acceptable way to share without bringing others down and avoiding avoiding finger pointing how to share critique well so there's professional critique in which case there's not a lot of room for your emotions around if you got the Aesthetics wrong it's time to fix them but I also want to talk about critique in a um in a a more social aspect because I mean sometimes you might see your coworker doing something wrong and you want to help them but if it's not your circus and not your monkey maybe you shouldn't um if you are a supervisor you just need to be straightforward it's not like you did this wrong it is this is not right the client wants this this is something else this needs to look more like this that's just a supervisor guiding I don't think that's critique as much I I mean really the best way to do it is just to say it right the bad way to do critique is hey you idiot I have no truck with that kind of supervision what are you stupid that kind of stuff shame it's just if you're imparting shame on someone else you are wasting everyone's time frankly [Music] um I also want to say when people are showing you something ask before critiquing because it'll be rare in your life that someone says I want to show you something and it's because I would like to hear your take on it when someone tells you that your honest opinion is what is being asked for but unless and until that request has been made shut up uh that's one of the things I think about critique silver Defender says if you ever had someone point out your own flaws which made you see something you were previous previously oblivious to um have you ever had someone point out your flaws which made you see something you are previously oblivious to I will say I think that is a description of life I feel like that is like yes yes and all the time we are all works progress and sometimes life feels to me like I'm waking up and going how did I not notice that this was a huge problem all this time that is definitely life um but that is also that introspection when someone points out when your partner says Hey when we're talking and you do this it's not constructive and you realize oh I'm doing that because of this and security which is also actually affecting all these other areas of my life that introspection is to me one of the most important parts about working with other people and being with other people being a social being is to ask yourself where do I learn about myself and where can I run these things that I am doing that are unproductive off at the pass which is again also all part and parcel about being easy and good to work with critique versus criticize okay so now we're in a discussion this is great old but not dead says critique versus criticize how do you know when you've crossed that line from one to the next well I mean to criticize is to like literally blame but also it's like you know I don't know yeah I I was at a a party a few months ago with a couple of people who were very opinionated and they didn't just have their own opinions they really wanted everyone else to agree with them and it was exhausting being in the room with them because there was all this like pulling the room don't you agree don't you agree don't you agree um it's super super boring uh but and like so that's just critique all the well that's yeah sorry I think I am um I was getting mad about those people and I lost my train of thought critique versus criticize it's constructive the question is yeah critique is constructive criticism isn't that in my head in my moral philosophy that's how I think of those two words your your your results could be different but critique is constructive criticism is not and if you are doing if you are in a work environment critique is what is necessary criticism is for your one-on ones that is for your you need to work on this part but it's not even criticism that's also work critique yeah critique is constructive it's a difficult and interesting question critique versus criticize right you asked a very specific question how do you know when you've crossed that line yeah are you mad that's that's probably a good that's probably a good um that's probably a good metric one of the things I've definitely come to understand the older I get is if you're feeling some kind of way it's coming out whether or not you think you are uh holding it back uh and in general in general men are way worse at hiding their feelings than women go ask a woman why Brasa Brasa it's a great great username how do you choose the right time to leave a job being a union member I always had two rules before leaving one will this benefit me and my family and by how much second is my absence going to affect my union brothers and sisters um he was usually a Union steward IBEW strong um when do you choose the right time I have only left a couple of jobs in the middle and one of them was by Centennial man um I'll tell you the story uh in case it is helpful so as I said I was working on Bicentennial Man we were making hand props that props the design lines were coming from Norman Griffin the art director for Star Wars and he was over in the next room I was like having a fanboy like meltdown at the same time as I was also having a great time building some beautiful things for that movie that being said the supervisor was terrible and that job was super stressful and there were a couple of people on the set not just the agitator that made that job really unpleasant and this is this is February of 99 it's because right around the time my kids were born my kids were born they got out of the NICU uh uh and literally like the two days after they got out of the ncu uh they were in there for a couple of weeks developing because they were born early um and I started on Bicentennial Man um and while I was working on Bicentennial Man I was keeping in touch with my friends up at industrial Light and Magic I was in a different location B Centennial man was done at Treasure Island yeah it was done at Treasure Island it doesn't matter anyway I was keeping tabs on what was going on up at industrial Light Magic and I knew that they were warming up to start on episode two the second prequel um and I wanted to get on that job and so I made a couple of small inquiries and that is when I learned that I was in the union I was in The Local 16 aaty here in San Francisco and I was in that Union for the better part of 10 years um you can't just leave a union job and go take another union job for all the obvious reasons um they don't want supervisors plucking people from one for another uh that makes sense I I get that and that was like when the model shop and industrial Light and Magic uh unionized the one one of the dispensations they got from the union was to not have to hold to senority because all of the skill sets in a model shop are so weirdly specialized if you just go by senority can be a disaster you've got to you've got to have skills be the tiebreaker um and you know so these were some of the dispensations the model shop got from from aaty but it also meant like you know following the union rules you couldn't just go wherever you wanted what this the long and the short of this is that it meant that I had to quit the Bicentennial Man job and then hope I would get hired on an industrial Light m magic um and I was thinking about this and I was thinking about this and I was thinking about it and I was thinking about it and the more I thought about leaving B senteno man the better I felt now again I'm like three months into this and I have brand new twins but I'm still like I'm so unhappy at work and so I talked to my wife at I talked to my wife the mother of my children and I said I want to leave this job and I think that I can get hired on episode two um are you willing to risk it with me and she saides I trust you and then and then uh Jamie Heyman called uh and he had just gotten word that Henry celik was making a movie called monkey bone and Jamie wanted to know did I want to be a supervisor on this film and I negotiated a salary with him again I was saying I'm still thinking about this job but we were talking about salary and I negotiated the rate that I wanted and then I turned the job down because because I had stopped working for Jamie uh a few years before specifically because I felt like his business partners created a toxic work environment uh and I didn't want to work in that environment anymore um really specifically I it doesn't matter why I had left but sorry I feel like I'm getting way into the weeds here Jamie offered me a year of work on monkey bone and I went back to my wife and I was like okay we've talked about me leaving by Centennial man I wanted to work on episode two now this new thing has arrived and it's called monkey bone and it's a solid year to 15 months of work and I don't want to take it and she said I trust you and I I like we later divorced but this to me is one of the best moments in our marriage that we talked about it as partners we talked about the parameters and uh the long and the short of it is I went up to ilm after quitting B Centennial man on good terms went up to ilm managed to get hired on episode two and it all worked out but it was um it was a lot of a dance and frankly sorry I'll say one more thing about this because I was not working in a vacuum I still had the ability to ask my parents for dough if things got really tight I absolutely had that ability and I knew that that ability existed so I always knew I that is part of the privilege I have had growing up and becoming a professional was like in that moment it wasn't like there was no other options CU there was there was this extra little bit of space which was my parents bank account that could provide me an extra tile in my life to move this tile puzzle of work to the places where we wanted it to be so I would be remiss if I didn't add that privilege but like leaving a job is hard sometimes it's easy sometimes it's really really easy but if it's easy it also means you're probably burning that bridge and that is a specific choice to make um I wanted to go back and say one more thing about being a difficult coworker is if you have difficulty getting along with everybody maybe you're the problem that is another place I have had issues with people is like I have worked with people who had a beef with everyone and dude if you have a there comes a time when you're getting married for the fourth time that maybe it's you maybe you're the problem um and actually somebody asked me about this where is this uh monkey circus wanted to know also do you how do you handle having to pull someone off an aspect of a job if it's just not working um in that case you got to just say it you got to just tell them uh we can't work like this anymore and I've had to do that too that's no fun but if I was on the other side of that situation I would want to be told the truth I might not respond well to the truth at the moment I mean I would hope that I do uh but it is to me the the respect you pay to someone when you're pulling them off a job is to tell them exactly why not to pull your punches on that front thank you so much for
