okay so there's the link in the knee we group now we're ready to roll so parts that we're going to be using for this build this is a two inch to half inch reducer this is a two inch street 90 and street 90 simply means that one side is uh a fitting side that will slip over a piece of pipe and then the other side is the same size as the pipe so that another fitting will slide over it and that just conserves space for us it also saves us another piece of pipe that we don't have to solder up and then we're going to use a half inch union which will connect the condenser or a pipe for a coil or a pipe that goes into a thump or whatever it's going to connect to the column we've got a copper 2 inch tri-clamp fitting and then just a little piece of half inch that will connect the the union to the column now i also have this two inch piece of copper um if you saw the video where i cleaned this copper it worked really well all of these parts ran uh about eighty dollars so these these two inch fittings and this um tri-clamp fittings they're they're expensive like this one is like 30 dollars 30 something dollars and on the replay of this video i'll put links to all these parts um there that i got on amazon and you can't like these parts are really hard to find like at your home depot or your lows these three in fact these aren't going to be at lowe's or home depot you might be able to get them online and have them shipped through lowe's or home depot but i got them at amazon and i'll leave you guys some links this you'll be able to get this piece easily at lowe's or home depot two-inch copper not going to be able to get that at lowe's or home depot at least locally for me what i did to get this piece this is a 24 inch piece it actually was um 40 inches when i bought it and i just walked into a i just walked into a plumbing company that i knew did stuff with two inch pipe and i just asked them if they had some scrap pieces that i could buy from them so that's how i did it and they charged me 16 and that was like two years ago when i bought that three foot piece or 40 inch piece and that was hey joe how's it going isaac what's up uh you oh you can find him at menards great oh and i just missed whoever that oh whoever else that was phantoms hey what's up so um like i said all of these parts ran about eighty dollars or slightly under you can buy a completely built two inch column for a keg for a keg build online for uh starting at around 150 bucks i think so if you don't want to spend the time to do it yourself you can buy it pre-built spend about twice the money so that all being said i guess we're ready to jump into it some of the supplies we're going to use uh this is just to clean that half inch stuff and then we're going to need some flux and i'm just using regular uh lead-free water-based flux uh i got a little brush for the flux we've got some emery cloth that we're gonna use to clean the copper the larger pieces and and all of this stuff you can get at home depot or lowe's and um got some lead-free solder and a torch so let's go ahead and get started i'm going to start by cleaning up all my pieces get all my pieces cleaned up first and uh you just have to clean the sides that are going to be in in the fitting touching the touching the flux or the solder so for this piece this piece will be fitting inside two other fittings and so i don't have to clean the inside of this pipe just the outside the fittings that go over the pipe you have to clean the inside so we got that one cleaned up and for this piece this side is going to connect to what we're doing today and then this is going to connect next week so i'm not going to worry about cleaning this side because we won't be soldering it to anything until next week you guys got anything going on this weekend anybody making any runs or making any matches or who's got something going on good morning richard oh and then i missed that other one oh i can see it there phantom says been thinking about getting a still been watching several of your vids great vids they are oh well thank you very much you should definitely do it you'll love it no doubt there's a lot of great videos on youtube about how to how to get into it isaac's working today been making a sugar wash for your sack run that's awesome rooster's in the house lance is in the house stealing old school is in the house yeah we we don't have a menards locally lance did did you have to work today or do you get to make your run that piece is done dex is in the house coffee and watching a steel build right now awesome buddy just showed up and watching as well cool got to help them build a k1 filter system in the next air show what's uh what's a k1 filter system robert says just just finished building your first still my dad passed aways before he could teach me got to learn the hard way miles sorry to hear that robert do you have procedures on what to do if i get a steal um well scotty i mean there's so many different ways to go about doing the different things um you got to figure out first like what kind of what kind of spirit you want to make that kind of has the dictates a few things your side the size of your steel dictates a few things your equipment that you want to use so i mean the best thing i can recommend is head over to me join moonshine for beginners join us over there we're always talking about that stuff and that's the best place to go on the internet to get help getting into this hobby i promise you lance says is going to be able to make make his run good deal and dex says the k1 filter is a passive pawn filter he owns a baiting tackle shop looking for a filter for the minnow tanks oh okay cool oh thank you all right y'all so i am um self i'm self taught as far as soldering copper i've been a handyman for years and i've done a lot of soldering fixed some plumbing pipes and i've got to wake in that you know i can do it but my joints are always ugly so if any of you professionals if you guys out there do do uh copper soldering for a living and have any tips for me as you watch me do this i'm happy to have them because i'd like to be able to make pretty joints a question about your 551 video uh i have a uh lucas says i have a question about your 551 video i saw you tripled the batch but you only put in one ounce of citric acid was that by mistake or did you mix more of them no that was by mistake and i actually made another i made a follow-up video for that correcting that problem honestly it still worked i tripled everything in the formula except the citric acid and it still worked just fine you can see this pipe here this is the one that i cleaned and yeah it it worked just fine so i don't know um citric acid goes a long way citric acid goes a long way when song says so um the uh i don't know if maybe that formula that um i don't know if george made that formula and made that for everybody and made it in such a way that it's just easy to remember you know like 551 that's a real easy way to remember it and maybe the the amounts are not that critical as far as getting them exact that's my guess douglas is in the house keep the heat mostly on the fitting itself not the pipe yep okey-doke good morning from maryland where everything fun is illegal welcome you and david says yeah i can't roll either denzel says i've found when i clean the inside the flux touches and outside the copper it seems to make a better looking solder yeah i'm going to be trying that for sure i heard the same thing i'm from france i am oscar's back in the house good to see you again oscar from france okay this is the last piece to clean i think i'll double check them all make sure i got them because i've been yaking my jaw the whole time makes it easy for me to forget stuff phantoms from alabama roll tide road tide phantoms pretty solder joints tip keep a wet paper towel handy wipe it wipe it wipe if it overflows gotcha bob thanks for the tip dubs is in the house what's up dubs except riding and looting oh in maryland ran an all grain wash yesterday rocked worked really well all right good job [Music] okay let me oscar's impress and he's going to build one himself oh good deal yay let me double check all these fittings make sure i got them all cleaned good morning mike mike williams in the house what's up aaron aaron what's up hello greetings from germany okay they're all clean so i've got a bucket of water and i've got a rag so by bob's recommendation i'm gonna wet this rag well i was gonna i was gonna dip the pieces in the water to cool them and i had the rag just in case all right so we got a wet rag handy and ready we got paper towels get my flux pulled out need to scroll this up a little bit there we go and i'm gonna i'm gonna start with the bigger pieces we got a okie we got an okie in the house what's up rob dubs up in the rocky mountains okay so i'm gonna do this tri-clamp fitting first and i'm gonna flex both sides too much coffee this morning my hands are shaking mike says propane or mapping gas uh this is a matte gas i think it's the yellow bottle is that map i can't remember which is which and then i'm gonna put the flex on the inside and so i just get it coated like a light coating i don't put a whole bunch on there maybe i should but this seems to work so i've got everything fluxed up slide this piece in hands are wet okay propane oh let's see if i can do this without burning everything up i'm getting back oh you know what let me roll back a little bit i'm going to wipe the excess flux off and uh so who was it was saying heat the first so on this piece the fitting is on the inside of the pipe so do i just inside maybe this will help a better prettier joint wipe the excess flux off here okay dex says coffee was getting getting to him too so he just put a splash bourbon in there there you go that's all that didn't it all right watch the beard that's a good idea i'm thinking he better stand up i'm gonna heat this fitting up thicker than the pipe so i guess i'll just run it around this ring a little bit first keep the inside of the fitting doug says all right [Music] beard burn so don't overheat just until the solder flows he said he's the thickest part there it goes okay yeah i can't see any solder on the inside well that's what we ended up with another ugly joint look at that mess so i've got some cleanup to do i'm putting on pipe you want to of the solder from the end of the pipe to the flange of the ferrule so that the soccer solder can get in there okay i might end up having to redo that definitely got some solder to clean up off of that or that triclamp's not gonna work but we're gonna get these big ones done first these are the hardest ones for me these big thick fittings as long as it works who cares what it looks like i'm kind of the same way but it'd be nice to be able to make a pretty joint i like pretty wind songs all about the pretty nothing a grinder won't fix yep ah my hands are so jittery jesus i think it probably did okay we're ready for the where'd you get the pipe home i got the pipe at a plumbing house uh a plumbing company actually that just did regular household residential and commercial plumbing and i just walked in and told them i had a project i asked them if they had any uh short scrap pieces i could buy off of them they sold me a 40 inch piece for 16 the reason i can remember that it was 16 is because it was wrote on the pipe until yester the other day when i cleaned it otherwise i'd never remembered how much i gave for it okay time to do this one oh i forgot i'm gonna wipe off the excess [Music] me absent-minded what so so be nice to have three hands to do this i have found that tin flux works best and the flame will start to turn green when it's hot enough what you did to hold hold the solder in my teeth he's not fired hands here oh okay get the other side i think i did no didn't get it yes what'd you say you missed a spot i missed a spot okay that one also looks terrible shot a shine sorts out shaky hands and puts a smile on the face yeah oh that's terrible oh okay that's not so bad it's not that's worse okay on to the next piece i think i need to clean this out again now that looks good brother cool this off a little bit more okay the next piece is going to be the reducer i'm going to clean this off some more clean this off again denzel said it looks good all right well if y'all say it looks good then that's good enough for me don't forget to like 27 in here and only five likes i'm showing we got 50 people watching right now that's pretty awesome all right goodness is women i get away good enough for them that's me too he's as long as his hold it holds and don't leak yeah and if it leaks i can always go back and redo it which is absolutely no fun to take that apart heat it up take it apart clean off the solder and try and redo it do you run my vinegar you run a vinegar through for cleaning yeah i'll do uh once this keg is built i'll do a uh a vinegar run and a sacrificial run and um next week we're going to be building the condenser i've actually got two different condensers that i could use but you know i want to do a build on one so that people can see how to build one and then after that it's it's usable as is even though i haven't had the the fabrication work done yet i'm gonna put an eight inch opening in the top and i'm gonna put a either one and a half or a two inch drain on the bottom i'm not going to put any ports in it for electric because i just really don't like using electric so and then you know it'll be done and then i've got some other modifications that i'm going to do that got some other modifications that i'm going to do for like this is 24 this pipe is 24 inches long but i'm going to end up cutting it down so i'm going to cut it down about right here and i'm going to put tri-clamps on both sides that way i'll be able to swap out column heads if i want to swap out column heads i'm also going to build a very simple reflux section that's about six inches long i'm going to put tri-clamps on both ends on it so that it becomes modular i can put the reflux section in if i want or leave it out if i want so uh i'm gonna be doing a lot of things with this cake build in stages joe stillwater says to flex the other end too flux did i not flex both sides so it protects the surface i don't know what you mean do you do you are you saying i should flux the uh half inch when i work with bigger capacity before sacrament gives me a little x oh okay okay okay joe are you saying i should flux the half inch side i don't understand i fluxed both the inside of the fitting on the reducer and the outside of the fitting on the 90. the small end okay okay all right i'll do that i guess i'm understanding what you're saying okay hmm i think i'm gonna do it that way dumpster says you did i think he was just commenting point the fitting down makes the solder flow in the joint better all right that says you did both pieces [Music] [Applause] this delay i think is what gets confusing doug says you flex both sides you said that before you did it everything is coming loose solder flows towards heat position doesn't matter well this isn't going to work because it's going to it's just going to fall out as i heat the pipe all right let's try this [Applause] so so [Music] there's also oh so [Music] give that a little touch okay i think the hard parts are done i did mean the half inch in you did okay all right come together now for this piece uh no doesn't matter okay never mind clean this up again hey jim welcome okay we've been wanting to do a keg build for a long time so this is pretty fun for those of you who are who are not in our volley space you should consider jumping over there we'll put some uh we'll put some links down in the description of all of our videos now for our volley base just like we do for the mee-wee space and uh yeah there's a there's a handful of us over there now i don't know 18 or 20 of us are over there and it's going to be pretty handy especially when we start getting more people people asking questions one of the things i'd like to do over there i have one what do you think is about to fall one of the things i'd like to do is i've got a channel set up over there so that you can video a question just ask a question in video form and then i can include that little question segment in the uh youtube channel videos here and we can do like little q and a's with actual questions that people have so kind of excited about that i think that'll be pretty cool okay so what are you guys putting this together and doing both of these joints at the same time since there's how do you guys what's your opinion about that i'm gonna take this off because we don't need it i got there's some lag time i gotta wait for the answers thing i do is flux and assemble everything before heating oh okay well let me do that well i'm going to try that joe i'm just going to flip well these are the only two pieces left so just that way there's no cooling between parts all right i got you [Applause] oh i hate this big big one first with the thicker fittings [Music] [Applause] [Music] so [Music] [Music] oh i think something went wrong with that one hey uncle charlie what's up rob says i piece it together might change my mind on the design right yeah like do a dry fit and maybe you don't like it once you've drafted it and changed things i get that oh there's another gloopy mess well that's it though that's the uh that's the column head i didn't i didn't put a uh a thermometer on this one um i can add one in later i can solder i can drill a half inch hole right here solder in a half inch stem and put a thermometer off of the offside here if i wanted to later which i may do and i may just build a completely separate kind of column head for this and put a thermometer in that one i'm not sure i don't use the thermometer a whole lot so it's not uh thermometers aren't that big a deal for me i just don't really what i've got to the point now where i i can tell where the temperature is or i can tell when i need to start slowing down my heat just by feeling the heat of the how hot the column is as it you know gets hotter as it goes up the column and um you i can tell then when i need to start slowing my heat down and getting ready uh to catch four shots but so that's why i didn't put a thermometer on this one so i've got one um oh no i don't never mind scratch that deck says looks good definitely makes me feel more confident and uh yeah tackle it it's it's not that hard i mean as you can see i'm not a professional um soldering i i'm self-taught and as long as it doesn't leak it doesn't matter it's not hard there are lots of videos on youtube about soldering in fact i would love it if somebody in uh and somebody in our group wanted to make a video about how to solder that would be awesome i'm not really the guy for that job obviously but um you know that it'd be cool to have one of those videos on our channel and maybe we'll get one that if some of the guys in here that are better at it than me if they don't want to do a video i may do one anyway even though i'm not that great at it but like i said if it doesn't leak then it doesn't matter so next week we're going to make the condenser and then hopefully we'll have in our we're gonna make our own gaskets for the we're gonna make our own gaskets for the tri-clamps because on the keg itself there's no these tri-clamps have a little ring and the gaskets that are made for them have a lip that fit inside that ring but the keg itself does not have that ring and so i've either got to figure out a way either got to figure out a way to cut the little center lip off of an existing gasket so that it'll fit flush with the with the keg lip or just make my own gasket without without the lips on it at all which is uh which is what pat did pat divine in our group i was talking to him about it [Music] so be sure to take some video when building mine you bet dex that'd be awesome uh rob says thank you and have a great day see you later rob you too uncle charlie says shave the beard with a razor [Laughter] probably not i mean mama trims it with scissors every now and then that's about it if i can get him to hold still long enough looking good says andy thank you so does does anybody have any questions um about the build about the plan uh anything like that so i don't know it didn't turn out too bad it's got the uh tri-clamp and then this is where the uh condenser will connect jar mafia says hey jeremiah's in the house so who which one of you is in the house mason jar mafia has several guys uh uncle charlie says bead uh bead off the gasket shave oh shave the bead shave the not my beard shave the bead off i got you yeah i was thinking about that i'm a little worried i don't get it just right in the leak but i mean who knows i could try it either way and we'll just see which is better joe stillwater says good job thanks all right wayne what's up brother how is the mason jar mafia doing uh as long as it works yeah that's that's exactly how i feel about it as long as it works so good job just a watershed will it still fit in your cleaning tube nope this one this column i have you know i talked earlier about cutting i'm going to eventually cut off right here and put a tri-clamp on both sides so that the head is modular and once i can remove the head then this will fit inside of the uh inside of the cleaning tower and then this piece is small enough that i could fit it you know like in a one gun bucket so that'll make it easier once i make that side of it modular so so next week we build the condenser and then basically it's usable as a steel just the way we've got it even though by the end of next week we won't have the eight inch uh ferrule put in the keg we won't have the drain in the bottom so you know it would be usable as it is it would just be inconvenient because you'd have to funnel your wash into the keg and then to get it out of the cake you would have to like turn the keg upside down and uh drain it off so it would be inconvenient but it would be doable and that what that means is you could build a keg steel for uh you know this piece was this piece cost me about eighty dollars the condenser is going to cost about i don't know 30 or 40 dollars the keg was 50 so you know you're looking at 150 bucks give or take and you can have a cake steel 15.5 gallon keg steel may be a little inconvenient because it doesn't have the eight inch opening in the top doesn't have the drain hole in the bottom and once you add those two pieces you've added about another hundred dollars and more if you have to pay somebody to to do that fabrication work that stainless steel welding which i have to do i don't know three or four hundred dollars deal which is not bad at all if you if you look at going and buying a well-built 15 gallon keg or a 15 gallon still now from like mile high or claw hammer or any of those you're going to spend several hundred dollars buying one so and they're good quality but you got to pay for it but these uh these diy keg builds are really an inexpensive way to have a really good quality still my opinion uh so let's see says miss the beginning did you get the parts at big box or have to grab them online so some of the parts i grabbed online and in the replay of this live stream i'll have all the links in the description um there was uh actually three three parts of this build that i had to buy online it was the two inch to half inch reducer it was the two inch street 90 and it was the copper uh tri-clamp ferrule now the the big two-inch pieces if you have like a um if you have like a lock supply or a regular plumbing warehouse supply where plumbers go to get their parts you could probably get those two inch parts there i'm sure i'm not so sure about the copper ferrule the triclamp ferrule though um so let's see uh george uh george with barley and hops made a film where he made a gasket from silicone thank you for all your effort yeah you bet oscar uh i don't guess i've seen that one i thought i've watched all of george's videos but um i'll have to go look for that nice job thanks for sharing the build everyday then yeah you bet can't wait till the condenser build love your videos all right andy appreciate that glad you like them and we'll keep doing them you're the man uh tom rodriquez you're the man yeah uh people keep telling me that you know it's i don't know what it's a burden really it's a burden no thanks tom i appreciate it oh i misunderstood thought you got them with the pipe oh no the fittings i got the pipe locally at just a plumbing company and then i got the uh the half inch union i got it home depot no lows jesus uh and then the half-inch pipe that i connected the two pieces with i just had a scrap piece here so i didn't even buy that uh local maynards carries two-inch copper fittings oh yeah the well you might be able to get them there then um especially the 90 those if they carry two inch fittings they'll almost surely have the two inch street 90. they may not have the two inch to half inch reducer that's pretty uncommon piece but yeah you might find them there so looking great side the column doesn't look bad either well you can't see it close up i assure you i assure you these are ugly solder joints but that's all right i mean look at that that is gnarly huh so but dub says it's the hat it's the hat so i'm pretty sure it's not gonna leak if it does i'll just have to redo it i mean it's that simple wouldn't be the first time i ever had to redo something so osai tushka man i hope i didn't butcher that pronunciation just showed up better late than never have a sweet feed wash ready to run tomorrow awesome that is awesome yeah uh the sweet feed washes that's my favorite sugar wash the you know mix have more corn than sweet feed but it's a great flavor i like it i think it's one of those things that you either like it or you don't like it but i really like it and a lot of people that live around me really like it so um yeah we're having a really good time with these live streams i really enjoy it and i think it's a good way to do a diy even though uh you know you kind of got to watch me do stuff which can be boring i guess as opposed to a regular how-to video where i can edit out all the slow parts and boring parts you kind of got to sit through all of it with a live stream but i mean i enjoy doing it what do you guys think would you rather me just make regular how-to videos and edit out all the slow parts uh or do you think you like doing the live stream thing gene says did i miss it uh eugene you missed it i'm sorry brother but there's a replay but yeah there'll be a replay up in the next day or so when we're done with the live stream i'm going to unlist the replay because i edit out the beginning and uh and then it'll it'll be a regular youtube video i need to get a better notification system okay well eugene there is a way for me to notif to set up notifications for these live streams i've gotta i've gotta schedule them ahead of time and then you'll get a notification ahead of time the problem is once i come to the live stream with my phone i can't i can't find anyway there's a i've got a problem to solve there a technical issue that i've got to solve and then i can start scheduling them out and you'll get notifications until then they're every sunday at 10 a.m central standard time we're going to do them at the same time every time so at least these shine along live streams so i love the live stream uncle charlie says he likes both all right cool keep doing both still in old school like the live streams uh rob loved the live streams andy loved the live stream better phantoms both brad both wolfman love the live stream dubs live randy neal i don't think you get all the questions if it's not live yeah that was kind of my whole intent of doing the live stream is so that you can ask the questions in real time i think there's gonna i think they're almost yeah almost real time but there's some value in that as opposed to the to the di uh the the how to video you know you can ask your questions in the comments and maybe you'll get an answer now our channel is still small enough that i basically i still have time to answer every comment on all of our videos but you know if the channel gets big enough you just can't you can't get to all the comments i'm getting probably between 20 and 30 comments a day on the videos and they'll reach a we'll get to a point where i just won't be able to get to all of them did you see uncle charlie's comment about his uh whiskey garden uh i don't get so planted red and blue corn yesterday whiskey garden whiskey garden that is awesome uh matthew says i like the live stream it's good to see that perfection with the joints is not necessarily uh yeah if you're looking for perfection you just got to go find another channel i mean nothing i do nothing i do is perfect so yeah uh and i don't mind i don't mind everybody seeing how i do it my flaws and everything it's okay like nobody's perfect i'm certainly not perfect and i settle for what works if it works that's good enough for me i'm very utilitarian in that way like the way you're doing the live as is thank you rooster eugene says okay cool i'll add it to my google calendar thanks for all that you do for the community you're welcome eugene um i'll see i'll see i'll see like both you get the name oh i got the name right oh cool uh dub says central daylight time we're on dst yeah 10 a.m central standard time on sundays for the shine along live streams george barley and hops film building is still the big blue all right he i did see that one i like that one because he actually made a steal out of a mantle uh a metal enamel coated pot i think which oh my i can't imagine i can only imagine the comments he got because everybody swears that you have to it has to be stainless or copper you know you can't make a steel out of any other material and anyway yeah i do i do recall that video if you never try you never learn that's exactly right that is exactly right and you know that's something i've been wanting to say to the beginners also i had thought about just making a specific video about the idea that you just have to fail you just have to try things and you have to screw them up to to learn like you learn faster by screwing something up then you learn by trying to figure out all the do's and don'ts before you ever try like you don't you don't really learn things that way you learn by doing and by doing you screw up and when you screw up you're better for it and because i i've talked to a lot of people i've heard a lot of people say you know i just i just want to learn everything before i get into it and in my opinion that's just the wrong way to do it you're like you're not going to learn everything you know george over at barley and hops he still doesn't know everything i'm sure he still learns things like this this hobby is so deep like you just can't no one person can know everything so you just jump in there and you start learning and you you learn the parts that you need as you need them and as you want to advance you learn more stuff it's really simple so and i i wasn't i wasn't down in george like george is my hero i've learned a ton from him uh that's the best so wolfman says that's the best way to learn yep i agree you're an option if you want to learn it's a requirement that's exactly right well said rob says all right well um unless you guys have any questions or if you guys know about anything i'm done with this part of the build so we can jump off of here or uh we can keep chatting it's up to y'all what do y'all want to do i need a sip of coffee i need a puff on my electronic cigarette the master has failed more times than the apprentice has tried oh man that's a good one dubs i love that rob is headed to chase parks see ya eugene gave us thumbs up eugene says later gator do you have any concerns about deforming and damaging copper phantoms has the same vape oh nice yeah i've had this one uh this one has lasted how long have i had this one that's gone on two years now two years yeah had this one a while i had to replace the tank on it all right well do you have a question but we do have a question what is the question uh do you have any concerns about deforming and damaging copper triclamp's spheres um i've heard about those this is the first copper tri-clamp i've ever used so my thought was just do it and if it's an issue cut that bottom off and do it again like that's just kind of how i do things but i have heard about deforming them because copper is so soft but um oh and also you're talking about uh as you use the clamp over and over that it just deforms the shape of it so that it doesn't clamp tight enough anymore uh i was talking to a couple other people that used for years so if i can get three years out of it that's uh that's good enough for me i'll build another one in three years if i have to take care of the vapor without a shoulder strap and these are
