greetings friends I'm Mike the fit farmer and years ago I moved my family out of the city to Homestead in the country join me as I share our adventures of growing stuff striving to live a healthy lifestyle and so much more oh and we live in a yurt don't forget to give this video a thumbs up leave a comment below subscribe to my channel turn on notifications and share this video with a [Applause] friend for me G ging was the very first aspect of homesteading that I got involved in what was it for you was it gardening was it raising chickens was it canning whatever it was let me know in the comment section below sometimes I think back to that first Garden that we had in the city we were the only ones in our neighborhood growing tomatoes and corn in the front yard with rain barrels for rainwater harvesting and catchment ah it wasn't much but hey I was learning and we were growing stuff and then we were there for a couple of years and then we moved out of there and we were able to be out here in the country and to have a much bigger Garden [Music] [Applause] and over the years we've continued to grow more in more food here and I would say the most important addition that I'm made to our Homestead to help us to grow more food has been adding a greenhouse and when we first started we started with one of the Harbor Freight greenh houses and we didn't have a lot of money so thankfully we found a coupon where we were able to get this greenhouse for like half the price and overall it served the purpose of what a greenhouse is for to help you increase production help protect your plants and starts from the weather as well as to extend your season however if I were to do it over again I would not have started with that Greenhouse we ended up moving on from that greenhouse and I think it actually got destroyed in a hurricane that came through here but we moved on to a DIY Greenhouse this one right here is one of our green houses here and it's one that I easily constructed myself and I used a 12T wide hoop Bender from bootstrap farmer to bend these poles to form our greenhouse and also used their Greenhouse kit to connect it all together and I covered it with the plastic that came with the kit and over the past few years this greenhouse has served my family and I well enabling us to produce more food and it's a comparable pricee to the harbor freight Greenhouse that we used to have as well as other Greenhouse kits that are similar but but but it's much much bigger than those green houses and and it's much more heavier Duty and more durable but I got the thing in here recently I think we're at a point now where it's time to make a few upgrades here my first upgrade to the greenhouse was building a raised bed in the center of the greenhouse and I built this so I can have a longer growing season with growing plants inside here as well as so they could develop a deeper root [Music] system but this past fall I had a little problem with this raised bed oh man about to fall over there that's not very safe got to do something about [Music] [Music] [Applause] that and before I could grow anything in the rais bed again of course I had to fix it but even more than importantly I didn't want this wall of this race bed falling and crushing any of the kids especially Hezekiah so one by one I took up each block on that side that collapsed all these and these and the problem ended up being that the ground had settled sank down a little bit so to fix that I added gravel to fill in that area but with the gravel I leveled out the area that had sank down but as I was doing this one of the challenges was making sure the good soil from the raised bed didn't fall out onto the gravel so I had to wrestle with that but gradually I was able to add the block back now I don't know if you have ever watched one of the Lego mov movies are seen one of the Lego video games but whenever I do a Time Lapse video when we're stacking blocks it totally reminds me of those movies and games because this is the sound that it makes when they're putting the blocks [Music] together and once I had the block reset this time I filled them in [Music] and after that I added rebar for extra support [Music] and lastly I even out the soil are you ready you're all up in my pants hello ladies hello hello ready to get all hot and sweaty not really but I guess we're doing it in anyway around the end of December early January s and I started tomato plants from seed and then at the end of February we up potted those starts into these plugs and S trades from bootstrap farmer and she tended and took care of those starts for several weeks in this Greenhouse here and then a few weeks ago she transplanted them directly in the ray bed the block raay bed and look at them now they have grown like crazy it's like a jungle in here ah so we are behind so ladies are you ready I think we're ready ohoh she's got the knives out might hurt somebody okay you go for a ride you want to go for a ride your arm in there snapping it [Music] in oh man it's worse in here than I thought it was going to be I prefer to grow indeterminate tomatoes and those are pretty much tomatoes that are Vining tomatoes and I like to do that because you can easily trellis those tomatoes and why do I trellis the tomatoes why do we like doing that well so that way you can easily Harvest from them tend to them work with them so that way you're not having to move bunch of branches around even though that's what we're doing doing right now to get it in order but once we get it in order we'll be able to Tin to it and harvest from it so much easier because we let our Tomatoes kind of Go Jungle style the some of the stalks well a lot of them have leaned over on the ground and uh one thing that tomato plants will do is they will start producing Roots wherever they're touching the ground so we'll probably just leave them touching and string them up like that and go vertical from there to give the tomato plant an even better root [Applause] system put ones that are looking good in there and ones we just know we want to get rid of in there cuz we're going re use those right there that's some good Fe right there see if we can save that man look at the food don't break the food [Music] when you neglect your tomato plants as much as we have in here um sometimes it grows like all these different suckers have turned into Vines and sometimes you just have to really hard prune this and pick which ones you want to let grow and which ones you're going to cut off so I like to find the best growing vine out from there and then which in this case is this one right here so I'm going to have Mike hold this and let's see where's the real top I guess the real top is right there I'm just going to go down and take these suckers off and yeah that's a big sucker and see this one right here it's large and it's a sucker so we're gonna take it off and this one being nice and established we could replant this and grow a whole other tomato plant from this one so they're not going to waste but they need to come off of this plant and if you don't know what a sucker is it is like in between the leaf branch and the main Vine you're going to have these little ones that start growing actually right here is the very tip of a sucker that's starting to grow and then they shoot off like this one and essentially it's it's a whole other plant but we don't want to put that energy into growing this we want to put the plant's energy into growing the fruit so we're going to cut that off and go down and continue to cut these other suckers off and see there's one starting to grow if you catch them early enough you can just pinch them off like that we continue to work through the greenhouse jungle aggressively pruning the tomatoes back to bring more order to the Galaxy or at least our Greenhouse C that one okay okay okay I normally don't like cutting them off this big because it actually leaves a big wound on the plant but sometimes you just got to do what you got to do in the past we have trell our tomatoes with tomato hooks but another upgrade that I'm adding this time is tomato roller hooks from bootstrap farmer because these are even easier to use we simply tie the string to the base of the plant run the string up and attach the roller to the support and these rollers clip on so there's no worry about them falling off damaging your plants and there're super easy to adjust and also with these reusable tomato clips we connected the plants to the strings of the Roll hooks I tie them loose Because by the end of the season this whole plant will be filling up this Loop a man we got to watch out for the set flowers cuz that's our fruit right there that's why she's better at this job than me like the Hulk Hulk sace Sor so much growing out of this let's look is there any fruit growing off of this one no so we're going to cut it off there's that one G let's trim these up see what we're working with all right hold gently so Hulk don't breid more flow it's okay Hulk Betty love hul a hold below the branches away from the F you be all right it's tough pruning some of the vines that have fruit on them it's just not fun thing to see the the fruit going away but you kind of have to do that for the benefit of the whole plant now if you do it on time do things early and get ahead of this then you don't have to worry about making those tough decisions but uh that's not where we're at right now it took a little bit of time but we really turned this greenhouse [Music] around and I'm glad I fixed the raised bed because I had to go up and down up and down as we worked on trellising these Tomatoes but while we were working in here we did work up a sweat man it's hot in here how you doing down there this is my last one and I'm glad it's the last one man you're sweating just a little bit your face looks a little pink let's look here look at it again oh man don't worry I always turned red when I'm hot but uh my shirt is sweated wet oh man yeah it's the next thing we need to work on here is getting a little bit cooler in here once we were finished I brought some of the cuting over into the shade to use for later [Music] and after all that work we had done that next morning it felt so good to go out into the greenhouse and see our [Music] tomatoes and that bucket of cuting that I took over into the shade well s and I planted some of those cuting in the empty spaces that we had in the raised bed some more stuff in there [Music] [Music] and for this next part of our Greenhouse upgrade I next connected five 3/4 in conduit pipes together [Music] a see out there [Music] all right get in your home oh too far [Music] [Applause] there all right let's see how this works [Applause] up oh budy look at that rolling rolling rolling just easing it up there easing it up look at there hold I was wondering how it did that it just holds on its own that's great let's see here if you got some cold air coming through just let it down nice and [Applause] easy that is so much easier wow that's so much easier I don't have to worry about taking sandbags on and off that is just so cool going all the way up SA and with that we now have our next Greenhouse upgrade in installed our Greenhouse roll up sidewall and this will make it a lot easier to get more air flow in the greenhouse and make it cooler for us to work in but next we have more work cut out for us with our high tunnel and the tomatoes in there [Music]
