[Music] page [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] or [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] um [Music] in the middle of there [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Laughter] [Music] [Music] me [Music] is [Music] okay [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] laura will lead us now in the first two pages of the amidah please note the additions especially on the first pages and then silently on the last pages for shabbat shava the sabbath of repentance which we are observing today page 115. [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] hallelujah [Music] we continue silently 117 through 120. oh oh um okay i was thinking about that that's a good idea we'll conclude the chakra on page 120 right below shalom [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] amen um [Music] [Music] [Music] um we're taking out the torah page 139 [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] is [Music] [Music] is [Music] is [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] remember okay i'm gonna speak tell her i'm gonna say a few words tell her i'll say a few words first she can sit in the front row shabbat shalom everyone this is a special shabbat you want to sit down for a minute because i want to say a few words you can sit here or wherever wherever you want this is a special shabbat it's called shabbat shiva normally parashat nitsavim vailak has read this shabbat but because this year the way the calendar falls with all the holidays being weekdays and not on shabbat they're separated out so we read nitsavim last week which has the word shuv return in it i think seven times and this is parashat vayila again they're usually read together it's a very short portion i will read from the end of the parsha and the name shabbat shava is because we are in the 10 days of repentance right and you may or not may or may not know that probably until about 150 years ago or so probably starting in germany and then coming to the united states most synagogues were not were part of a community but were not independent organizations with board of trustees and presidents like mindy as for our synagogue right but they were part of a commun series of community institutions and you didn't have a rabbi for each little steeple each little congregation or you may i'm not exactly sure but you didn't have you didn't have a rabbi necessarily for each congregation in a community what you had was a community rabbi and he gave two major addresses a year one is the shabbat before passover shabbat haggadah and the other is shabbat shiva and they were not sermons given in the morning service they were given on shabbat afternoon because they were dull they were longer right so and it was the custom especially right you can guess why passover and rosh hashanah passover with so many laws and customs and you have you could talk about the halacha the law of the laws of pesach you could talk about the the say there you could talk about the haggadah itself so many different things to talk about and shabbat shiva of course because this is the holiest 10 days of the year and so it was appropriate for the rabbi to share a rather long uh speech about sermon about repentance so i am going to take out now my 40 page surname i am not going to give you that shabbat shiva speech my son judah this afternoon will be giving his speech in fact he couldn't even talk to his iman eye yesterday because he teaches full time in a day school he had a run to shul before shabbat to finish his address to his congregation in queens this afternoon so we are now at the end of the torah and i just want to point out to you from where i'm going to read page 1178 so this is now moses description of right or narrative which includes moses own words and other than next week parashat hasinu that is really the end of his teachings right but it says when moses put down verse 24 page 1178 when moses had put down in writing the words of this teaching to the very end moses charged the levites who were carrying the ark of the covenant what was in the ark we didn't have torah scrolls yet what was in the ark the ten commandments were in the ark both the whole ones and the broken ones right by the way the cuts go rebbe there was a discussion yesterday on ravnet on my rabbinical thing on someone couldn't remember who said this there the katsuka rabbi the great hasidic rebbe said there's nothing more whole than a broken heart right because all of us experience loss and difficulties in our life so our heart is stronger from having experienced that so both the broken right moses broke the first set of tablets and then he wrote new ones those are in the ark of the covenant and look at what it says here verse 26 on page 178 take this book now what does this book mean not clear probably the book of deuteronomy probably not the entire torah scroll yet and place it beside the ark of the covenant and let it remain there as a witness against you exactly what it was in if it's next to it it's not clear where where next to did they have a separate little box for it well and then he reminds the people about how terrible they are well i know how defiant and stiff-necked you are even now well i am still alive in your midst you have been defiant toward the lord how much more when i am dead because he knows he's about to die gather to me gather to me all the elders of your tribes and your officials that i may speak all these words to them and that i may call heaven and earth to witness against them which are also words in last week's parsha heaven and earth for i know that when i am dead you will act wickedly and turn away from the path that i enjoin you that in time to come this fortune will befall you for having done evil in the sight of the lord then moses recites the words of this poem to the very end in the hearing of the whole congregation which is next week's portion azinu is a poem so this is what we're going to read now now first of all before i read this is also birthday shabbat is there an anniversary shabbat anybody have a birthday or anniversary in the month of september okay so we're going to have one aaliyah then and we are coming to a very sad time in our congregation because one of the most beloved members of our synagogue that's molly sperling in case you haven't figured out is going has sold her home and is going to be moving to be near her daughter not too far away so we expect that you will come here you know not only when we invite you but just any time you want save your daughter trudy okay and this week we're going to go right you're going to come visit us i hope right so i'm going to invite molly up to have an alia this is one of her last shabbato with us hopefully a few more yom kippur you'll be here right okay so um 1178 laura you want to do the hallelujah we rise as the torah is returned to the ark hallelujah [Music] [Music] [Music] um [Music] is [Music] [Music] may [Music] [Music] of you may be seated i'd like to share with you a brief message on this shabbat shava as we prepare for yom kippur yom kippur is the holiest day of the year and we usually focus on what we can't do on yom kippur which includes eating and drinking i think i i believe that there are some jews who spend the majority of yom kippur thinking about how many hours it is till the breakfast and i don't think that that was what god intended right when you read the haftarah for yom kippur morning and the prophet isaiah says is this the fast that i desire that you put on sackcloth and ashes and you bow your head like a bulrush no this is the fast that i desire for you to feed the hungry and clothe the naked right so the idea is if we just fast just the fast we're not fulfilling the mitzvah of fasting of as the terrorists as afflicting our souls that's how they describe fasting but rather we should be thinking about how we can make the world a better place and how we can be better people you notice that in the kaddish during the 10 days of repentance we say higher and higher right it's the same word really as al right the name of the israeli airline you know means to go high you know to go higher when you come up if we had our on the bema or if if i could make one slight design recommendation is that if we're going to have the shukhan down here we probably should have built at least a one step bhima to it in the sense that what you're supposed to do when you go to the torah and you have is what's the word aliyah to go up you're supposed to be going up and that's why most people have a raised platform for the aliacas you're supposed to go up for your aliyah and then go down by the way when you go to israel it's called aliyah as well what's it called if you leave israel you read you're right your dem the jews who left israel throughout you know throughout modern times used to be derogatory i don't think it happens anymore but you used to call them your dean people who came down from israel and settled in the united states if you were israel you were called your team but i think that the whole idea of yom kippur is not only that we are at our holy holiest on yom kippur but to help us reflect on the fact that on this one day god kind of comes down to us the other days we're supposed to like look up to god our gnome ki ports believe that god is coming closest to us um the greatest thinker and leader of modern orthodoxy the late rabbi joseph sullivan who was the head of all of the faculty of yeshiva university said on yom kippur god removes all obstacles and transforms our sometimes tortuous road into a straight path toward holiness and righteousness he then goes on to say we are not forgiven for our sins against god even with fervent prayer until we request forgiveness from our family and friends and so we cannot ask god for forgiveness of things we do to other people until we ask those people for forgiveness and he goes on to say unless we engage in global teshuva the idea that you're not only asking god for forgiveness but you're asking the people around you he calls that global teshuva he says then our atonement is ineffective and i think that this is a beautiful idea first we know that on yom kippur all of our confessional prayers which we recited on are in the plural right [Music] right the new is a plural ending avinu volcano is pluralistic we ask god for all these things not i okay and new the new tells you it's in the plural right and hashem knew so all of our confessional prayers are in the plural we see them together my friend and colleague rabbi nina beth cardin whose mother shoshanna cardin was one of the great jewish communal leaders in america and cousin is senator cardin of maryland rabbi nina bethkart who lives in maryland wrote on yom kippur we are not alone we do not approach god alone we do not abandon each other in our time of need and i've always been comforted by the fact that whenever i pray i'm joining not only with all of you here but theoretically around the world okay it's there's time zones in different times in israel already it's you know shabbos is over okay but essentially today we've all said the same prayers we're all speaking to god and on yom kippur even if there's different time zones we're all on the same day speaking to god to commonly ask for forgiveness for our sins and you all know that the ethics of the father's teachers call yes all jews are responsible for one another the final thought i have about yom kippur and this idea of global teshuva is that what's one of the last things we do on yom kippur afternoon we read the book of jonah right we begin yom kippur by focusing on our individual and communal repentance and by the afternoon as our day of fasting reach reaches that heightened frailty where we're all pretty hungry and we are starting to think about okay we have two hours to go until the we blow the shofar then we read the story of jonah and god asked him to go to nineveh and i just want to make sure that you are as clear to you that nineveh was the capital of assyria what is today iraq and there were no jews there so the story we are reading about the prophet jonah he's going to tell non-jews he's supposed to go tell non-jews to repent and then god will forgive their sins it's a universal story god doesn't care just about us god cares about all his people and you have a beautiful one of the most beautiful midrashim which leads to our half halal on pesach for the last six days right because the angels start singing when the israelites cross the sea and sing asia moshe right and miriam's dancing with her timbrels that's debbie freeman's song right and the angels according to the midrash start singing with the israelites and god says to the angels not to the israelites how can you sing when my dead meaning the egyptians you know lie dead before me when my children lie dead before me god is the god of all human beings and so it's interesting that we read the book of jonah which is not about jews and not about jews repenting right it's about the obligation to help people to achieve tikkun olam and to be better people jonah's message and god's message is we need to care about the entire world we need to care about the health and security and well-being of other people of other faiths and religions really the entirety of the world and i think one of the messages of there are many of the book of jonah is we are all god's children and god cares about how we all behave not just our own people sin is the result of selfishness when temptation overrides sacred principles seducta and social justice demonstrate sympathy empathy compassion and willingness to share with others so i'd like to suggest as we approach yom kippur as we bring food for our food drive which is going to go to jewish family service but as tom beck the director and i spoke the other day you know they support the entire community of elizabeth both jews and non-jews and they support you know all of this area and so we are providing both kosher and non-kosher food they have a kosher fruit pantry but they also are providing non-kosher food to all of the non-jewish people of which there is tremendous need now not only because of the flooding but just in general these pandemic times have raised the need for food food insecure there's food insecurity for more and more people so as we approach yom kippur we are not just searching for god god is searching for us god is knocking at our door and asking us like jonah to go out and help make the world a better place and the answer the question i think we need to ask is be able to answer is how are we the jewish people going to respond to that call to repentance shabbat shalom please turn now to page 155 mark will lead us 155 khatsi kaddish will recite 156 and 157 together we'll add in the prayers for shabbat shiva and then we will continue silently please rise [Music] [Music] um [Music] of [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] um team [Music] oh [Music] [Music] foreign [Music] [Music] me [Music] [Music] [Music] we continue silently through the end of the amidah 158 161. yeah i don't know if i know the new sock we'll conclude the amida with beseifer hayam page 161 the second paragraph i'm going to teach you an israeli melody that i learned many years ago when i was a student rabbi i worked with a the synagogue brought in a little touch but he's now a rabbi in great britain where his father was a rabbi his name is lionel rosenfeld and he taught me this melody shalom [Music] is [Music] mark continues page 181. is [Music]
