nice hey guys good morning so we're just headed down to the boat i'm gonna go out and get some halibut today a little shot of the harbor it's pretty empty right now once the salmon fleets out fishing so we got all baited up yesterday so we're gonna run out and get our gear set out and then probably come back to town for a little while and do a few chores in town a few projects go out and pull our gear later this evening yeah it's a nice day it looks like a sunny day we'll get down about and get fired up and we'll get on our way all right guys so we'll just get ready uh site here get our baiting cable and stuff set up get our buoy line and buoy all ready to go not really a whole lot to it just a couple of uh nuts to hold our bang table on [Music] so then we've got our launching tubes our basuka [Music] but you can see a really simple assembly just engage the gear on our reel and plus three line we just hang our buoy up [Music] you just do a [Music] all ready to go which one all right guys prepping ready fire ass hooks start by tossing this bird bag out [Music] oh [Music] all right guys so we'll draw a three line here that's the five [Music] so on our ground line here we have marks h25 fathom interval yellows are 25's the red is a 50. give us an idea let her go here okay looking good yeah it's all right so far i think keeping the birds away i think that we have now that we have a boom i mean things are different now than they were before yeah so i mean it'd definitely be hanging low if we put it off our mask a little safety feature here it was just a line guide keep the line from going all over the deck and also give them some resistance to clip against so spacing on these tents is i try and aim for about 16 to 20 feet very depending yeah so we're doing about three and a half knots right now maybe a little bit more closer to four which is about to speed you guys better go check things out yep so uh 10 top set takes probably 15 to 20 minutes set out again just depend depending on setting speed okay guys so we just got a couple more shots of line to lay out on the set we're shooting for about a mile and a tenth this one will be and the death toll be oh probably 55 to 73 74 fathoms so just kind of spreading it out covering a few dabs trying to see where the fish are yeah okay let's cut it off there it is okay this is like 75 [Music] all right probably good there [Music] good [Music] so [Music] so all right well we'll be a few more hooks just got a little bit of uh bait left in that tote there so we'll get that beat it up got a couple more sets to throw out and uh yeah hopefully uh start catching some [Music] fish all right so the braking strap on these anchors broke that's this little piece of canyon here and that's for uh in the event that your anchor gets well and truly stuck in a rock or whatever you plowing like this into the ground so if you're pulling from this line right here that breaking strap will break and just haul it directly like that so i'll just pull these barbs free so we broke that breaking strap last year didn't get around to replacing it so i'll do that real quick real easy [Music] poke new canyon through all righty i suppose you can just try the movie first here and then this canyon goes over to this mellow ring just a quick clove hitch nothing fancy there and just like that good as new all right guys so we got our dirt shutout you can see i've already cleared down the deck took the setting table and the line guide off already so uh we'll just finish tightening up the rest of this uh deck gear and uh prepare the reel for uh for hauling stop the level winding stuff i'll show you that once we get to it um so yeah we'll let these soak probably uh six or so hours and uh come and haul them in the afternoon and we'll pick it up from there all right guys so breezed up a little bit heading back out we went to town to just do a few things while we waited for our gear to soak so hopefully it'll calm down a little bit makes it easier to work when it's all windy and pushing us around so we'll pick it back up once we get out to the ground all right guys so we'll set up our level wind real quick simple assembly [Music] stick through and over here on the front take your line just feed it through like that [Music] yeah ready to roll let's do this thing [Music] ambition we will go [Music] so so [Music] now [Music] [Music] a decent little start guys couple of fish nice fish too opened [Music] nice fish [Music] the man um wow so we've been asked if these are uh monkfish a few times in the comments they're not these are just uh these are giant sculpins yeah giant giant sculpins they are very resemblant of uh of a monk fish for sure but he's absolutely yeah these have no market value to us so let's go usually it's a nice halibut around those guys they're in the same area come on making sure my eye is good never hurts fish stable fish guys black cod can't keep them so we'll let them go it won't nice i really didn't think spiny dog fish no market for them either [Music] here mostly [Music] buddy bye i'm just uh slicing their gills here leading them out over here behind me i got my measuring table make sure that they're a legal sized fish right here put their nose up here kill over here 32 inches legal halibut yeah so i kind of take care of uh hitting the hooks that will unveil a few and shake some fish when he has time but he really has to pay attention when we're holly because we're off the stern here so if the tangle comes up and the boat's in gear you risk sucking that into the prop so must pay close tension and also every time you turn your back it seems like a big fish comes up yep get them [Music] so [Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] yeah looks like a nice one there here's a nice oliver guys [Music] so [Music] my [Music] drivers oh someone's old tie up line beautiful a while nice fish guys just about to the end of the set [Music] anchor that's that all right nice set very nice nice looking fish get our bowie line in get these guys cleaned up and ice down and carry on to the next one all right guys i got the halibut all cleaned up see beautiful fish nice looking yeah it's a good grade that last set yeah so dad went ahead and threw the cod down while i finished cutting those so now we'll go ahead and take take weights take lengths actually yeah we'll measure them and then we'll get a a net weight that we use to calculate our amount that we can keep it gets debited against our ifq so yep so for those of you that don't know how our fishery works here in alaska um we're under a ifq system which is individual fishing quota so we essentially own the rights to harvest this fish every year every year after the attack is established how much can be taken out of the water sustainably then they release the numbers and they calculate how many pounds we get to harvest yeah so we have to be careful that we measure our fish and we get an accurate weight so we don't exceed the amount of poundage that we can harvest on our permit we have a 10 allowance if we go over 10 percent then we can face fines and we'll also have to forfeit that that overage so it's important that we're accurate about it so we just have a scale on the deck here we'll measure every fish we'll write down the length and then i have a spreadsheet on my computer inside with a breakdown of how many pounds of fish would weigh for that length and it's pretty accurate um if we have heavy fish that'll be maybe five to eight percent over sometimes a little bit more so we're pretty careful towards the end but um so that's where we're at yeah so we'll get these guys measured up and go from there 38 38. shiny 37 so these are just going into a pool of slush ice they're not getting slammed down or anything yeah it's just loud because it's empty in there yeah 41. 35. [Music] six [Music] 40-pounder huh [Music] if you want [Music] nice all right so yeah so we'll go get these tallied up looks like we got [Music] there [Music] uh [Music] you
