to take our hearts and minds back to the cross where jesus bled suffered and died for the sins of the world in acts 20 and seven the disciples came together on the first day of the week to break bread we follow that example today because jesus instituted the lord's supper and when we examine first corinthians 11 chapter beginning at the 23rd verse we find that as often as we partake of these emblems we proclaim christ's death until we come we also find that we are to examine ourselves before and while partaking of the lord's supper in first corinthian 11th chapter and the 28th verse paul says let a man prove himself so let him eat of that bread and drink of that cup and he went on to warn the corinthians that he that eat it and drinketh in an unworthy manner eat it and drink it damnation to himself not discerning the lord's body let us pray holy and merciful god we're so thankful that you have blessed us to come together again to commemorate your suffering and your death on the cross help us father to remember the sacrifices that you made when you gave your life we pray that you would bless each and every one father and that you would bless the bread and the cup these things we ask and pray in the name of your son christ jesus amen [Music] oh [Music] [Music] is [Music] how [Music] [Music] is [Music] let the church say oh nobody like you lord [Music] there's nobody like you lord nobody [Music] you give me peace [Music] nobody nobody nobody nobody like [Music] nobody like you lord now it is time for our collection this is a time when we have to demonstrate our faith by giving back a portion of that that god has blessed us with recognizing that everything we have belongs to him if you have anything to give we realize that god loves a cheer forgiver and if you have anything to give at this time please make your choices known by giving to god i'm gonna trade my earthly [Music] [Music] oh [Music] [Music] roll back round the weather there it's always fair there's sunshine day and night no cold no rain will fall there before the sun shines every [Music] [Music] why don't you let me me and your thrones around lord please reserve my mansion roll back opportunity that we received right now to continue the work here through our giving and we just ask as always father god that you would bless these offerings that we render to you in such a way father that more souls will be brought to christ and that the continued effectiveness of everything that we do in your name continues to be edified in jesus name we pray amen well amen and good morning to the renaissance church of christ to all of our visitors and our fans fans of jesus christ i'm a fan as well and we're just so glad that you're in the stands with us this morning as we celebrate the victory in jesus christ this is week number 25 that we've been in this situation and i was looking at the cdc reports this past week or hamlet in your state in your country and your region but they say that in atlanta we are still at what they call substantial spread of coronavirus so there's mild to moderate spread minimal spread and then there's substantial spread so i want to give you a heads up as it relates to substantial spread this is the month of september and we are gearing up for a substantial spread of the gospel as we try to bring more souls to christ substantial great spread of the word and substantial increase in the numbers of individuals who give their lives to jesus christ we are on the brink of our evangelism explosion and we're counting on every single one of you to help us as we render substantial spread of god's incredible word speaking of substantial spread it's ready to spread substantially to all of your homes right now as brother orpheus haber prepares himself to give us another amazing word and let this gospel spread into your hearts and into the hearts of the hearts of the people that you know and you love so that all of us can have that grand day with jesus christ when it's all over said and done but we have one more song for you and after that you'll get some substantial spread of this word amen [Music] [Music] father i pray order my steps in your word please order my steps in your words [Music] teach me your will while you are working help me please though satan is busy god is real one of my steps in your word [Music] let my words let the words of my mouth be acceptable in thy sight [Music] take charge of my thoughts both day and night [Music] and i want [Music] please [Music] the world is ever changing but [Music] i praise your names [Music] is [Music] [Music] show me how to talk it's working [Music] show me how to show [Music] my [Music] in your world [Music] praise the mighty name of jesus we're absolutely thankful to god for allowing us to see a day that we have not seen before and we're grateful because the lord has allowed us this privilege to engage in heartfelt praise and intimate worship toward him our god is an awesome god and he is in fact worthy to be praised and with that we want to appreciatively thank our ministers of music for a great job on this morning and we're grateful for our additions to the team and grateful for the wonderful way in which they have led our praise and worship i got a chance to uh look into the live stream chat and we are grateful for all of the compliments and all of you who are appreciating our efforts in regards to giving god the very best that he deserves and so we're grateful to see all of you on our stream and once again this is the day that the lord has made we shall rejoice uh and be glad in it and so we want you to know this today begins the uh initiation of our gospel explosion and we're excited that you are logged on and if you are in fact visiting with us we want you to know that you are in fact our honored guest and it is our prayer that whatever is said today that it will prick your heart and that you will make this the day that you establish a relationship with jesus christ and so it is our prayer that you will listen attentively and then not only listen attentively but that you will make ensure that you are in tuned with the word of god in a way that allows each and every one of us to appreciate what god has done in our lives god is in fact worthy uh to be praised so remember this week uh today we of course start with the gospel sermon on tuesday and thursday our members will be sharing bible studies all throughout social media between six and eight o'clock p.m and then of course on wednesday i will be preaching another gospel message so make sure you invite your visitors to come and to share with the gospel of jesus christ it is our hope uh that you will appreciate our efforts throughout the entire month of september now if you would turn with me to luke the 24th chapter i want you to turn with me to luke the 24th chapter and i'm going to ask you to meet me i'm going to ask you to meet me in verse number 44. luke the 24th chapter and i want you to meet me in verse number 44. luke the 24th chapter and i want you to meet me in verse number 44. we got more folk in the auditorium today this feels so much better uh to actually see people uh wow this is is not all chairs it's praise jesus there there are other people in the building uh actually sitting in chairs it's hard waiting for a chair to say amen uh it's it's difficult uh there's there is nothing more arduous and nothing more frustrating when the chair won't say nothing i mean it doesn't matter how hard you preach it don't matter what you say it doesn't matter the depth of the content the chair just looks at you praise god but we used to be like that in the church of christ we we we were just like chairs praise god we've just come a mighty long way but now praise god we don't mind uh giving god some praise ah i'm gonna shout out just a few people sister stella is in the house y'all those who are members of our church uh brother robert wilson's wife is here and she comes on occasion and we just appreciate her being here this morning brother and sister johnson is here praise god they come on occasion and it's good to see them and then pj is here warren's wife is here and my beautiful nephew and niece just love seeing them and thanking god for them and then of course uh you have heard uh the wonderful uh sisters who have joined our our praise our praise team yeah it's all right to give them a hand we're just thanking god for that and appreciating uh all of them for being here luke 24 and verse number 44. these are my words which i spoke to you while i was still with you that all things which are written about me in the law of moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled then he opened their minds to understand the scriptures and he said to them thus it is written that the christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day and that repentance for forgiveness of sin would be proclaimed in his name to all nations beginning from jerusalem you are the the you are witnesses of these things and behold i am sending forth the promise of my father upon you but you ought to stay in this city until you are clothed with power from on high i want to lift for a theme for the entire month the theme is authentic christianity authentic christianity um and as a sermon title i'm going to look for a subject the history a historian's look at the first case of conversion a historian's look at the first case of conversion i want to suggest to all of you who may be listening uh on live stream that we want you to understand that jesus christ our lord and savior has risen from the dead and is seated on the right hand of god and because jesus has in fact risen from the dead and is seated on the right hand of god he announced that all authority has been given unto him in heaven and in earth we want you to be mindful that since jesus christ is in fact our sovereign lord then it is incumbent upon everyone to obey him before it is everlastingly too late now i recognize that because we live in a pluralistic culture um and what i mean by pluralistic i mean that there are many ways afforded to people who want to establish a way into a relationship with god and i understand that we're living in a time when people are choosing their own route and they're trying to chart their own path into a relationship with almighty god but i would have you to understand that there is only but one way into a relationship with god and it is through the person of christ jesus well i hear jesus saying in john chapter 14 and verse number six i am the way the truth and the life no man comes to the father except by me this same jesus said he that rejecteth me and receiveth not my word has one that judgeth him the words that i speak the same are going to judge him in the last day so i want you to be clear in your mind that as you are trying to find your way into a relationship with god that jesus is the only way into a relationship with god through the person and work of christ jesus and not only that i would have you to understand that if you're going to be a child of god you're going to have to find what is called authentic christianity now by the word authentic i want you to be clear about what i mean by the word authentic when i say authentic i really mean that which deals with replicating the original that which deals with replicating the original so when i'm speaking about what is authentic i really mean to conform to an original so as to reproduce the essential features let me make sure you're clear about that when i say authentic i mean conforming to an original so as to reproduce the essential features now um the reason that is important is because when you look at christianity our function today is to conform to the original and make sure we reproduce the essential features now when you look at scripture and you look within the book of acts and you look within the new testament we find our authentic christianity now what do we have to do in order to have authentic christianity today we've got to conform to the original so that we can reproduce its essential features well one of the aspects of our history within churches of christ is we believe in what is called our restoration many of you may have heard of what is called the restoration movement well what that movement is all about is that we do not create our own form of christianity our job is to reproduce the original so that we can possess the essential features we've got too many people in the religious world that are trying to create their own christianity we don't have the authority nor the privilege to create our own christianity well what do we need to do dr haywood we need to conform to the original so that we can reproduce the essential features that's what we mean by the restoration movement we believe in speaking where the bible speaks and being silent where the bible is silent we believe in following the pattern of new testament christianity because we do not have the authority or the wherewithal or the privilege to create whatever kind of christianity we want to create what are you saying dr heywood i'm saying i hope today is your day when you say i want to accept christ jesus not the way you want to accept him but to accept him by conforming to the original and reproducing the essential features well uh the idea of a pattern comes to mind whereby what we need to do is make sure we're following uh the new testament pattern that's what we need to do we need to ensure we're following the new testament pattern now what i hope to do on today is help you to understand there's a whole lot of ways that people are proposing i want you to go the right way i want you to go the way that is authentic i want you to go the way that is real because if it's not real if it's not authentic then it cannot save you i said if it's not real and it's not authentic then it cannot save you we want authentic christianity and not some kind of humanistic created christianity that you think will get you to heaven i want you to be saved the way the bible says to be saved now that being the case i want to look at a historian's look at the first case of conversion i want to look at a historian's look at the first case of conversion not not just any kind of look i want to look at it from a historian's perspective now um luke uh the gospel according to luke that i just read within your hearing luke in addition to being inspired is also writing from a historical perspective that means luke's function and luke's intention is to ensure that you see christianity laid out on display from a historically reported perspective so that you can know exactly how conversion looks let me say that again i want you to know how conversion looked in the first century after jesus resurrected went back to heaven sat on the right hand of god when the church first got started what did conversion look like well i i'm not here to give you a lot of theology what i want to do is give you a historian's perspective now why are you saying a story luke writes his gospel from a historical perspective in which he provides us with a historical argument now i want to look at luke 1 verse 1 through 4 to establish my case what what are you doing dr heywood i want you to know what conversion looks like well how are we going to study what conversion looks like we're going to study what conversion looks like by looking at it historically and we're looking at luke not only as inspired we're looking at luke from a historical perspective now in luke chapter one uh beginning in verse number one luke chapter one beginning in verse number one i want you to follow along with me it says inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us just as they were handed down to us by those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and servants of the word it seemed fitting to me as well watch this word having investigated everything carefully from the beginning to write it out for you in consecutive order most excellent theophilus so that you may know the exact truth about the things you have been taught let me make sure you know we just read luke in the prologue of his gospel writing to one name most excellent theophilus we don't know who theophilus is except to say since he wears the title most excellent it indicates he is a roman official now when rook when luke writes to this roman official luke is giving him a carefully investigated perspective of the christian faith that means when luke writes he doesn't just write as one inspired he said luke said first of all what i am writing is predicated on eyewitness testimony let me help you with that christianity is the only religion that could stand up in the court of law it's the only religion that has weight in the court of law because it is based on eyewitness testimony that means when we look at christianity it invites you to scrutinize the facts to which it displays christianity listen every claim that is made in regards to christianity is inviting you to scrutinize the facts how do you know because luke said many have taken in hand to write on or to write an account that was based on what the eye witnesses handed down now that means anything we say about jesus dying being buried or rising again or anything we say about the christian faith it can be investigated because it is predicated on eyewitness testimony which means christianity is not a mythological religion it is a historical religion nothing when i say historical i mean there are facts that are associated with the christian faith now luke said not only that but i want you to be real clear theophilus that when i wrote this i'm not writing what i'm guessing about i'm writing what i have carefully investigated now oh jesus help me um the king james version says luke had perfect understanding that's not the best translation but the best translation is carefully investigated or investigated carefully now it comes the word investigated comes from a greek word parakulofao and paolo kulopheto is a term that means to fully attain the knowledge about something now uh protocol is to attain uh it is to get to the place where you have full knowledge of it is to go through a process of meticulous investigation so as to ensure you got the right understanding about a particular subject it is a word that can describe a reporter that follows along an event and takes meticulous notes to ensure that the thing documented has some accuracy that's what luke said he did now i know luke's qualified because luke not only carefully investigated the life of jesus based on eyewitnesses he was also an eyewitness of paul's ministry if i had time i would show you in the gospel excuse me in the book of acts luke was a companion to the degree that when you get to the latter part of the book of acts he uses what's called the we passages he will describe luke excuse me luke will describe himself and paul with the plural pronoun we which means he began to follow along carefully in paul's ministry what are you telling me about luke dr hayward i am telling you that luke is a historian that ensures that what he's reporting is in fact accurate now if that being the case i want you to be clear about how that works now i want you to take a look now at luke chapter 24. luke chapter 24 i want you to go back to luke chapter 24. luke chapter 24. now what are you doing dr haywood i'm telling you luke said what i'm writing is based on historical documented facts that i have carefully investigated uh didn't give you the word for for careful the word for careful there is acribos and acrobats means to make sure that i am accurate so he carefully investigated so that he could do so and report to you accurately that's what luke said now uh usually when i'm doing an apologetic dissertation here i show you just how meticulous luke was luke was a meticulous writer i think i want to do it i've done this in a po in an apologetic discourse but i want you to see how meticulous luke is before we do luke 24 i want you to go to luke chapter three that's what i want you to do go to luke chapter three luke chapter three i just want you to see how historically meticulous luke is because if we're gonna if he's gonna show us what conversion looks like i first want you to know you can trust him you can trust luke i mean you can you can trust it i think you can trust luke more than you can trust any preacher or pastor living today i think you can trust him i i think you got to be careful because if you're going to give the perspective that you're saved your question needs to be does my conversion look like what they did historically and if my conversion does not look like what they did historically you might realize something might be wrong with your case of conversion now i want to be real careful about that because people ask me all the time you know am i saying well um you are saved if you did what they did like they did to accept the gospel of jesus christ if you did what they did like they did it then you are in fact saved from your sin but if what you did looks different from what was taught and practiced from the first century church then you might be in some difficulty how do you know because luke writes a historical argument now here's what that means in the book of acts he is giving us cases of conversion historical cases not not his opinion not not what he thinks what was witnessed so luke is not trying to convert you theologically although his document has theology within it uh-uh luke says i just want to display the facts here and what i'm going to show you in the book of acts are not just the first case of conversion i'm going to show you cases of conversion now if what you did does not look like what they did then you might not have a case praise god and one of the worst things that could ever happen to you is to find out that i may not have a case because what i did does not look like what they did when they heard the gospel in the inception of the new testament church now uh watch luke 3 watch luke 3. let me do this quickly watch luke 3. watch luke chapter 3. what are you doing here dr hayward i just want to show you how meticulous luke is i want to show you how meticulous he is i'm going to read this and some of this may be a little bit arduous and probably boring to the mind but i need you to see how this historian works he says now in the 15th year of the reign of tiberius caesar when pontius pilate was governor of judea and herod was the tech truck of galilee and his brother philip was the tetra of the region of arteria and trachonitis and lacinius was tetrarch of abilene in the high priesthood of anas and kepheus the word of god came to john now hold tight all luke wanted to say was that the word of god came to john y'all missed that all he wanted to articulate was the word of god came to john but to place that in a historical context he says in the 15th year of tiberius caesar when capheus was high priest he goes through all of these historical characters and elements by the way each one of them can be verified outside the bible so that luke is so much a historian that other historians have to acknowledge the accuracy of his writing that's that's luke so luke says don't you think i'm getting up here trying to write you some story i i ain't got time to write you no mythological uh creative fairy tale no what i'm trying to give you is an accurate look at how conversion took place in the first century i'm trying to give you an accurate look at the life and teachings of jesus christ leading to the establishment and spread of the new testament that's what i'm doing now watch this now since that's true come back to luke 24 verse 44 through 49. come back to luke 24 verse 44 through 49 come back watch this luke 24 verse 44-49 well we we now know that luke is a historian so if you don't mind from here we're going to treat this like an interview and just talk to luke uh luke what does jesus do at the climax of his life after his resurrection what does jesus do luke would say well according to my eyewitness testimony researched record jesus gives them a commission and here is what he tells them these are the words which i spoke to you while i was still with you that all things which are written about me in the law of moses and the prophets and the psalms must be fulfilled then he opened his opened their minds and understanding the scripture and said to them thus it is written this is what jesus said according to the historian luke here's what jesus communicates to his disciples thus it is written written where well at the time jesus makes this statement there is no new testament so everything he's about to say was written in the old testament if i had time i'd go to the old testament and show you where it's written but for the sake of time and argumentation luke says jesus communicated to his disciples and said as i am sending you forward thus it is written and thus it behoove though it was necessary for the christ to suffer and rise again the third day boy if i had time jesus is saying all that's in the old testament what's in the old testament jesus um was in the old testament is that i was going to suffer that's in the old testament i can find that one pretty easy because i heard isaiah says surely he has borne out greece and he's carried our sorrows and we did a steam in stricken smitten of god and afflicted but he was wounded for our transgressions he was bruised for our iniquity and the chastisement of our peace was upon him with his stripes we are healed but then he says he would rise again the third day that's in the old testament boy if i had time with that you're going to have to go to several verses to show how they paint the picture of resurrection all through the old testament to demonstrate the idea that a matter of fact a good one is a good one is y'all remember when abraham was going to sacrifice isaac when abraham was going to sacrifice isaac and uh right at the time abraham was going to kill isaac the bible says there was a ram caught in the bush and not only was there ram caught the bush they took the ram and put it in the place of isaac and then when you get to the new testament the hebrew writer says that isaac being a being saved was a image or a resemblance of the one to come now the reason i know that's about resurrection because the bible says abraham concluded in his mind that god was able to raise isaac from the dead of which he was an image a type or a resemblance which means when i look at isaac jesus would have me know that the story of isaac is about resurrection theology he was an image of the one that was to come so when abraham said god could raise him from the dead of which isaac was a type now we find that resurrection theology was taught in typology now i could go to several verses all through the old testament to show that jesus was going to rise the third day jesus was going to rise the third day that's in the old testament what's in the old testament according to jesus i'm going to suffer i'm gonna rise again in the third day but there's a third thing in the old testament that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in my name beginning from jerusalem that's in the old testament so there's verses in old testament scripture that indicate god was going to send forth deliverance from jerusalem isaiah chapter 2 verse 1 and 2 it tells me that it shall come to pass in the last days that the mountain of the lord's house will be established above the hills and then it tells us and the law would go forward from jerusalem now i'll need you to underline the word from not at jerusalem from it now here's what i'm telling you jesus is giving the indication that everything i'm telling you is written in the old testament is about to be fulfilled and i am about to send you forth to jerusalem because that's where repentance and remission of sins will first be preached so what are we going to look at the first case of conversion and it's going to happen not at jerusalem it's going to happen from jerusalem well why is that important there are some people who don't realize that in this text it is affirming that whatever was going to be preached in jerusalem regarding how to be saved would go forward from jerusalem which means whatever they preach in jerusalem that's what they got to preach everywhere else because the message would not be trapped in jerusalem but it's supposed to go forward from jerusalem and we got a lot of people who try to ignore what happened in jerusalem and try to keep what happened in jerusalem at jerusalem whenever you start preaching a different way of being saved you are trying to keep what happened in jerusalem at jerusalem but i'm telling you what is at jerusalem would go forward from jerusalem and you can't keep what happened in jerusalem at jerusalem because what happened in jerusalem would go forward from jerusalem are not getting that we we got too many folk who are in religion and they're trying to take the same gospel message peter preached and they're trying to keep it at jerusalem but i'm telling you what happened in jerusalem was to go forward from jerusalem which means the same gospel message that happened in the city of jerusalem was supposed to happen and every other region that the apostles were preaching now watch this watch this stay with me here so jesus said here's what i need you to do i need you to go to jerusalem because when you get to jerusalem luke 24 verse 49 you're going to be empowered with power from on high now follow me luke where do we where do we need to go next to see what happens since you're the historian luke would say well why don't you read my second volume chapter one and let me continue to help happen continue to know what took place historically all right acts chapter one acts one acts chapter one all right i want you to meet me in verse one what are you doing brother heywood i'm tracing a historical argument because i'm talking to luke about what luke said was gonna happen lucas luke ain't even trying to convert me theologically luke was saying i'm just gonna tell you what happened now you make your own decision about what you're gonna do but here is gospel history on display and you're gonna have to make a decision do i get saved like jesus said according to history or am i going to do my own thing according to my feelings and let me tell you your feelings will get you in trouble praise jesus i said it'll get you in trouble your feelings will get you in trouble you don't want to take a chance judging salvation based on what you feel you don't want to take that chance you what you don't want to do is try to judge right from wrong based on your feeling what i want to know is historically what did they do ah now watch luke watch luke luke chapter one praise god all right luke take me through here uh help me understand a historical perspective luke 1 verse 1 says in as much as many have undertaken to compile an account of the things accomplished among us just as they were handed down to us by those who were from the beginning it is again were eyewitnesses and servants of the lord that's luke 1. now watch how acts one matches with that now in acts 1 he goes and says the former treaties the former treaties uh an account that i composed theophilus about all that jesus began to do and teach until the day when he was taken up to heaven after he had by the holy spirit giving orders to the apostles whom he had chosen to these he also presented himself alive after his suffering by many convincing proofs i want let me pause so jesus according to luke the historian rise from the dead sends his apostles into jerusalem but during this 40 year period of time now 40 years 40 day period of time during this 40 days this 40-day interval between his resurrection and the coming of the holy spirit jesus kept showing himself alive by many infallible prayers many convincing prayers what are you doing jesus i'm trying to make sure before you go preach you convicted i'm trying to make sure before you go preach my message you are absolutely convicted about what it is i've done so he meets 40 days with his apostles and what do you do he just keeps showing up look i'm alive and then after he leaves him for a little while then he comes back hey wait i'm still here then he leaves for a little while then he comes back another day hey look i'm alive here's my physical body and then jesus will leave around he comes back look i'm showing you myself alive by many convincing proofs because when you go forward and preach what i don't want you to do is lose your conviction so i'm gonna keep showing myself alive by many convincing proofs for 40 days what are you doing jesus i'm preparing my disciples to preach a message of conviction he just he just kept showing himself a lot you know on a practical level i've learned that sometimes i need god to keep showing up this is not where i'm going in the sermon but if i had time uh if any of you live long enough to know about life's discouragement sometimes in my discouragement i need god to keep showing up and i'm and i'm glad god will take the time that while i'm trying to get to conviction why while i'm trying to get where i need to be i serve a god that better keeps she keeps showing up i'm glad that when i'm in my lowest point in my life when i'm at that point when i'm ready to give up i'll serve a god that'll keep giving me evidence that he's present he'll keep showing himself alive by many infallible proofs so jesus for 40 days shows himself alive now watch this after he shows himself alive watch what he says in acts 1 verse 8 acts 1 verse 8. he tells him but you will receive power that's what he said in luke 24 when the holy spirit has come upon you and you shall be my witnesses here it is both in jerusalem and in judea and samaria and even to the remote parts of the earth what where is this thing going to start jesus is going to start in jerusalem but whatever you preach in jerusalem that's what you got to preach in judea whatever you preach in judea that's what you're gonna preach in samaria whatever you preach in samaria that's what you're gonna preach at the uttermost parts of the earth so what we're looking at is whatever starts in jerusalem will go forward from jerusalem jerusalem judea samaria the inner most part of the earth whatever starts in jerusalem will go forward from jerusalem so whatever we see in conversion happening in jerusalem according to the historian luke that's what will take place in every other case of conversion because that is the gospel of jesus christ in regards to how you respond there is no room for making up what you want to do so here's what i'm be looking for i want to know in jerusalem did they say a sinner's prayer i'ma look for it i just want to see if that's what they did um i want to know in jerusalem did they just have faith only and i want to see if that's what they taught in jerusalem i want to know what they say by grace only if is that how it looked in the city of jerusalem because if that's how we looked in jerusalem i'm going to expect that it will go forward from jerusalem but i also want to acknowledge that if that is not what they did then that is not what we should do today nobody is saved by a sinner's prayer why brother haywood because that's not what happened in jerusalem nobody today is saved by faith alone how do you know because that's not what they did in the city of jerusalem nobody to say is saved by grace alone how do you know because that's not what they did in the city of jerusalem well what did they do praise god well luke tell us what happened well dr hayward when i was writing my accounts i made sure to make sure to i made sure to articulate to you and to theophilus that the apostles were sent forward to be in jerusalem to receive power from on high and jesus sold himself alive for 40 days by many convincing proofs during that time judas of course had been dead already and they allowed god wants them to choose another disciple in which judas is replaced by one name matthias matthias could not be a chosen disciple unless he was a witness so the qualification to be an apostle was that you had to in fact be a witness of the resurrection so the lot fell on mathias and matthias is numbered with the eleven and now we again have twelve apostles and while i'm on that i'm praise jesus there are no apostles today there's no apostles i i i think this is a good place for me to mention that there are no apostles in the context of being chosen by jesus and there is not one person alive in the field of christendom that can take the perspective and prove by the bible that they are an apostle because if you are an apostle then you had to be a witness of the resurrection and if you did not witness the resurrection you cannot qualify to be an apostle and last time i checked you would have to be pretty old to claim to be a witness of the resurrection i don't even know how you walking around right now if you are an apostle listen an apostle had to be a witness now why why why the reason an apostle had to be a witness is because they could not base their testimony in their feelings or in anything subjective they have to base their testimony watch this on what they saw and what they heard oh god they had to base their message on what they saw and what they heard no room for feelings no room for subjectivism no room for philosophy tell them what you saw and what you heard tell them that you saw me rise from the dead and sitting on the right hand of god tell them that you saw me ascend into the clouds and now when you go forward preach with conviction what you saw and what you heard now well in acts 2 verse 1 as the historian goes forward into his writing luke says now let me tell you what happened let me tell you what conversion looked like on the first case of conversion and what it looks like in the city of jerusalem because this is the first case of conversion it's the first one the first thing god wants to do is grab everybody's attention there's a practical point in here for the church but god wants to grab their attention and god waits to do this by strategically planning for the advent of this to take place during a feast called pentecost pentecost is one of three annual feasts that every jew must observe and every male jew from 12 years old must be in the city of jerusalem which means at the time this is about to happen there are thousands of jews in jerusalem out of every nation under heaven and god strategically waits for this moment to send forth this incredible outpouring of the holy spirit that will empower the apostles to preach the word of god and the gospel of jesus christ so what god has to do is he's got to get everybody's attention so to do that it says when the day of pentecost was fully come they were all with one accord in one place and suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind and it filled all the house where they were sitting and there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as a fire the word clothing means split tongues like fire and each one of the split tongues sat on each one of the twelve apostles and the split tongues were sitting on them and they were all filled with the holy spirit and they began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave them utterance when they spoke with other tongues tongues in this verse does not mean gibberish or some kind of unintelligent language but they were able to speak in languages that everybody could understand so much so that there were 17 different nations located on the day of pentecost there were parthians and means and elamites dwellers in mesopotamia judea cappadocia pontus and asia phrygia pamphilia egypt strangers of wrong jews and proselytes cretes and arabians we do hear them speak the wonderful works of god i need to drop another point here that there is absolutely nobody today that can speak in tongues miraculously the only tongue speakers today are bilingual folk that grew up learning more than one language those are the tongue speakers today but nobody has the ability to speak in a language that they never learn that was a miraculous ability that cannot be duplicated today i wish somebody would pull on that because i don't believe there's one person in atlanta georgia that could duplicate the notion of speaking in tongues because if you can speak it then somebody can interpret it if you can speak it then somebody could translate it but if you speaking something that cannot be interpreted if you're speaking something that cannot be translated then it is not bible tongues but that ain't why i went there that's name one so they appeared unto them cloven tongues like us of fire and it set upon each of them they were all filled with the holy spirit and began to speak with other tongues as the spirit gave the mother eyes what is happening here god is getting everybody's attention that's what he's doing because he's about to preach a message that he needs everybody to hear so he empowers the apostles with ability because the text tells me these men are galileans not only are they galileans they are ignorant unlearned men according to acts chapter 4 and yet these ignorant unlearned men can now speak a language they never learned and every man hears them speaking in their own language wherein they were born now what happens in verse number 11 through 14 they says what means this others were mocking saying these men are full of new wine in other words it seems like these men are drunk peter stood up and said these ain't drunk as you suppose seeing it is but the third hour of the day but this is that which was spoken by the prophet joel i will pour out my spirit upon all flesh i'm going to make my holy spirit available to all mankind and it's beginning with the empowerment of these apostles and peter said this is what the prophet joel spoke where are they brother hayward in jerusalem what's happening in jerusalem god's given the apostles power what is peter about to do preach the gospel of jesus christ why because somebody needs to know that he's risen from the dead sitting on the right hand of god and now what you need to do is obey the gospel by his authority or in his name so here's what we got peter starts preaching in acts 2 verse 22 you men of israel hear these words jesus of nazareth a man approved of god among you by miracles wonders and signs whom god did in the midst of him as you also know i love this part of the text because when he says peter did miracle excuse me when he said jesus did miracles he said i don't need to prove that to you because you saw him you yourselves also no which means peter is appealing to those who were traditionally enemies and non-believers and he's saying i don't have to prove to you that jesus did miracles because he did it right in your midst and you saw it just like i did that means jesus is authentically the son of god now rather than go through all this now peter preaches the gospel that jesus died was read and resurrected he is the fulfillment of old testament prophecy yes he is and he's sitting on the right hand of god and he has set forth this which you now see in here now when you get to verse 34 acts 2 verse 34 acts 2 verse 34 he says david has not ascended into the heavens but he saith himself the lord said unto my lord sit down on my right hand until i make thine enemies your footstool now we are at the first case of conversion verse number 36 acts 2 verse 36 we are now at the fast case of conversion what do we have therefore let all the house of israel know assortedly that the same jesus whom you crucified god made both lord and christ watch this now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said to peter and the rest of the apostles men and brothers what shall we do that's the question you need to ask now for your own live stream right now where are we at brother hey with first case of conversion what city are we in jerusalem what is the historian doing showing you what conversion looks like he has given you a first-hand look based on eyewitness testimony what conversion looked like in the first century and whatever we see here will go forward from jerusalem and if what you did does not look like what they did in jerusalem and if it is not a case of conversion as recorded by luke then you don't have a case the worst thing one of the worst things that happened to you is you get into a legal bout and you go see a lawyer and you tell the lawyer everything that happened and after you spend two or three hours with that lawyer that lawyer looked you in the face and said i'm sorry to tell you you don't have a case which means what you're trying to argue there is no other historical cases within the context of law that would substantiate your position to that again you don't have a case there's a lot of people that are going to stand before god on the last day and plead their way in front of him trying to get into heaven and god is going to tell them the only problem is you don't have a case and what i don't want to hear god tell me is that i don't have a case well what are you doing dr haywood this morning i'm trying to give you a case well what case are you trying to give me look at it verse 37. now when they heard this they were pricked in their heart and said to peter and the rest of the apostles men and brothers what shall we do look at the question one thing they don't do is they don't assume that they know what to do so they ask because what they're not gonna do is do something that will have no value so if we are the ones who have crucified jesus pray tell us what shall we do what is a relative pronoun that suggests wanting to know the content of what should be done what shall indicates that whatever we need to do is commanded what shall we we is a universal pronoun that which means whatever one of us has to do all of us got to do the same thing what shall we do is an action word that suggests that i just don't want you to believe i want you to do something beyond just faith peter says in verse 38 it is repent that simply means change your mind coordinating conjunction and each of you be baptized now i don't know if i need to deal with this it might be a little early in this gospel campaign but some people make this argument that well these when peter says repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the forgiveness of sins some people make this well first of all let me just say this if you just asked peter and you did not bother to try to be overly scholastic and you just wanted a plain answer from peter and if you said peter i'm sitting there at renaissance coc and i'm on live stream would you mind just telling me straight up what i need to do peter would say repent peter is there anything else i need to do yes and be baptized how many of us need to do this every one of you well by whose authority do we need to do this in the name of jesus well what are we doing it for for forgiveness of sins well peter do i get anything out of the equation other than remittances of course you will you'll get the gift of the holy spirit now if you walked away and that's all you heard you'll be saved right now today just as simple as can be but there's always somebody who googles their information and and they get real smart and they get real educated and and they say well you know um you know it ain't as easy as that uh because repentance is a second person plural verb and baptism is a third person singular verb and since repentance is uh second person plural and baptism is third person singular um and remission is actually a third a second person plural then repentance goes with remission but baptism doesn't go with remission because baptism is a third person singular and repentance is the second person plural and grammatically this would not be true of the text it would be more like repent for remission of sins and be baptized so we would the verse actually would need to be switched around a little bit and you really need to be repentant second person plural for remission of sin second person plural and that baptism third person singular each one of you can be baptized that sounds really good but google can give bad information he can give bad information especially if you don't know how to handle grammar first of all you are correct that repentance is the second person plural that's true and baptism is in fact the third person syrian third person singular according to coin greek language i agree with you on that remission of sins i agree with you on that only problem is second person plural verbs that are connected by a coordinated conjunction with a third person singular verb means both verbs connected by the conjunction are for the same purpose so you now have to deal with the fact that the coordinating conjunction joins two verbs together and since these two verbs are joined together they indicate similar purpose next thing a second person plural verb that is connected with a third person singular verb the third person singular does not make it any less imperative because not only are these different second person four third person singular third person singular i need you to also be mindful that uh the second person plural and the third person singular are both imperatives which means both commanded so since both are commanded and connected by a coordinated conjunction both verbs have the same force and are for the same purpose the other thing that you need to be mindful of is that if you're putting weight on the second person plural and you're trying to say the third person singular doesn't have as much weight then you don't understand the third person singular just individualizes the corporate command of repentance now the third person singular just translates each one of you be baptized which is but to say the corporate command repent is now individualized when he says be baptized because the baptism is a third person singular which simply means each person individually must be baptized that's all the third person singular does now that being the case it is for the remission of sins because both verbs are imperative and both verbs are for the same purpose and since verbs are for the same purpose i need you to understand that to get the remission of sins you got to get both imperatives both imperatives connected by the coordinating conjunction makes both verbs for the same purpose now i i think that's well explained but i think peter's explanation was better than mine it's as simple as they repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ father mission of says now let me prove that further well brother heywood yeah okay you you you you're you're giving an opposite grammatical argument well i'm also going to give you a contextual argument so you don't need no grammar for what i'm about to show you here's what i want to know after peter tells them be saved what do they do and i think this will answer the question well he says repent be baptized every one of you in the name or by the authority of jesus for the remission of sins and you shall receive the gift of the holy spirit watch the text for the promise is unto you and to your children and all those that are far off even as many as the lord our god shall call watch this with many other words did he testify and exhort saying watch this text be saved now mind you they haven't done nothing yet peter told them what to do but they ain't done nothing yet peter says repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ follow their mission but they ain't done nothing yet because peter says before you do something let me give you some more words of encouragement with many other words that he testified exhausted saying save yourselves be saved by the way the word be saved or the phrase be saved here is an imperative be saved now my question is what do they do immediately after peter said be saved look at the text so then those who had received his word were baptized when did they get baptized after peter said be saved peter said be saved well what did they do after peter said be saved text says then they that glad they received this word were baptized when did they get baptized after peter said be saved now that means when peter said repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of jesus christ for the remission of sins you shall receive the gift of the holy spirit then the bible says with many other words that he testified exalt saying be saved what did they do after he said be saved they got baptized and the same day there was added unto them about 3 000 souls and there is the first case of conversion now here's what i want to leave you with when you read through the book of acts because luke has already explained what conversion looks like when luke mentions other cases of conversion he won't mention every step in conversion he will sometimes mention one step because he's already showed you what the whole picture looks like so sometimes when luke writes about other cases of conversion because he's writing a historical narrative he will come to a verse when he says and they all believe and that'll be all he says well luke wants you to know when he says they all believed he is now abbreviating what he already studied stated in the first case of conversion so he doesn't have to restate what he said in the first case of conversion because he already said that so now when you're reading through the book of acts and you'll see sometimes it says and they all believe other times they will say and they repented other times they'll say and they confessed he'll mention one step as a synecdoche or a part for the whole in which in which he doesn't have to restate everything he said in acts 2 because he already stated it in the first case of conversion so every time he mentions conversion thereafter he doesn't mention everything he'll mention one step to stand for the whole let me help you with that uh dr hayward went fishing with a pole well that would be true but then somebody else wants to write my story and they say dr hayward caught fish with a hook well that would be true too then somebody else writes my story they say dr hayward caught the fish with bait then somebody else writes my story and he says well dr hayward caught the fish with us with a rod listen if you put all of them stories in one narrative no one narrative tells you everything about what i said about what i did to catch fish it's true that i needed a pole to catch fish it's true that i had a bait to catch fish it's true that i had a rod to catch fish it's true that i had a hook to catch fish every one of those are true so you have to put them all together to see the complete picture of what i did when i went fishing in other words when you read the book of acts some verses will say they believe other verses will say they confess other verses will say they were baptized other verses will say they repented that does not mean one is true over the other it means you must take all of them as true because sometimes the author will mention one step to stand for the whole that's how that works so if you are wanting to be saved don't just try to be saved by the hook you need the pole too you need the bait too you need the rod to put it all together so that you can catch the fish called salvation because you'll never catch the fish of salvation if you only go by one part when you need the whole are y'all following that all right so if you're here today i think i'm finished with part one but i'm just getting warmed up um praise god if you're here today i want you to be saved on that live stream i want you to make known right now because we're here all month to baptize you we're here all month so that you can give your life to jesus and we want you to do it like they did it in the first case of salvation we want you to do it like they did it in the first case of conversion and i let the historian luke lay it out for you so you can see exactly what it looked like nobody waited in their backyard for something to hit them in the top of their head and come out the bottom of their feet nobody had a convulsion nobody lost their mind nobody just fell all over the line none of that you know what they did they obeyed the gospel of jesus christ by faith and that's how you get saved and god will make you a part of his body his church well what's the church i thought is just something i go to no the church is something you become you you become the church when you obey the gospel of jesus christ the church is not what you go to you go to worship but we want you to be the church we want you to be the church and then when you're the church then you go to worship so i want you to be saved right now today praise god i want you to realize that somebody wants to release you from your debt and there's no greater moment when you are released from your debt i'm i'm mindful that it lent many of the hbcus uh upon attending a graduation uh unbeknowing to them an announcement was made that somebody was going to pay all their school debt that they would leave school with no debt with no loans that every debt they ever had was going to be forgiven and that they would be able to go on and do their career and get their rest of their education and they were released from everything that was hanging over their head with debt because if anybody been to school you know when it come to getting loans sometimes it takes years to pay off a school loan it takes years to pay off some stuff that you have accumulated but in the one moment in one swoop of time somebody came along and said i am going to make sure that you will leave here with no debt i'm giving x amount of millions of dollars and you will now be a graduate and when you graduate at this point you will leave here without a single debt you'll give it a new start you're going to have a new beginning all things will be passed away all things will become new what joy it would be to sit in an audience and know that somebody has paid every last bit of my debt i've come to tell you that this ain't about graduation but this is about getting to heaven somebody came to make an announcement that i'm here to forgive every debt you've ever had so that all things can become new so that you can be a new creature in christ jesus all you need to do is accept the gift and know that today all your sins can be remitted and i've come today to tell you this is your day right now now this was part one here's what i need you to do if you're a live stream and if you're in atlanta georgia right now i want you to call the phone number that's in that stream i want you to email us and tell us that you want to be baptized right now today that this is your day that you want to give your life to jesus and we are going to be here to make every provision possible for you to get baptized our water is ready uh praise god the robes are ready you don't have to come in with any specific kind of garment you just come as you are and we will make sure we'll baptize you right now today what you don't want to do is waste time and pretend like you have time you need to do it right now today you need to say this is my time to be a child of god now what brother heywood this is this is wonderful when's the next one well wednesday come back wednesday i'm going right back to acts 2 but i'ma put emphasis on the holy spirit and my sermon on wednesday is you better get him while you can you better get him while you can and i'm going to show god did something interesting you know what god did god wants to give you himself and he wants to give you the gift of him in the person of the holy spirit and if you don't have the holy spirit you are not saved and i'm going to show that to you and that's why peter talked about the gift of the holy spirit and i'm going to put emphasis on conversion with the holy spirit because you can go all your life and never have the holy spirit which is synonymous with being saved what i would hate for you to do is die without the holy spirit you need the holy spirit you know why because that's the only way god will mark you as his property you will never belong to god if he don't mark you you need to be marked by the holy spirit so that when god sees you he sees his mark and i don't want you to live this life and die and never have the holy spirit but right now i want you to be saved right now i want you to make this your moment our song leaders are going to sing and they're going to help you be encouraged to make that connection now make the call now do the email now say it's time for me to be baptized and we'll be here ready to give you all that you need so that you can meet jesus christ in right relationship let us sing let us sing praise the mighty name of jesus yeah praise the mighty name of jesus he wants to save you and he wants to save you right now he wants to save you and he wants to save you right now praise the mighty name of jesus yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah oh thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus [Music] why don't you make the call right now make the call right now make the call right now this is your time to say it's my day to be baptized for the remission of sin it's my day to say yes to king jesus it's my day to do what they did like they did so that i can accept the gospel of jesus christ yeah oh thank you jesus thank you jesus thank you jesus yeah yeah show me thank you jesus thank you [Music] yeah yeah yeah yeah [Music] yeah yeah yeah god will save you from everything you've ever done thank you thank you thank you thank you show me [Music] lord i'm your child i may not be perfect but thank god i'm your child thank god for your grace and your mercy thank you jesus thank
