Sept. 19 - "You've Got Everything You Need" Exodus 14:13-16 (NLT)

[Music] so [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] good morning and god bless you we want to welcome you to our virtual worship service we are the messiah baptist church located in east orange new jersey and we are here to worship god you're not here to view me you're not here to look look at the band and hear what they have to play but we are here to worship god so wherever you are right now come on stand to your feet let's give god a hand of praise let's let's give god some adoration this morning because we serve an awesome god we serve a god that can do anything but fail we serve a god that allows the sun to shine and and the moon to dan tonight we serve a god that that lights our pathways even in dark times we serve a god that can make a way out of no way and so my brothers and sisters we are here to worship we are here to worship not in messiah's name not in reverend owens his name but we are here to worship in jesus name amen listen our scripture reading for this morning is found in psalms first time psalm number one from the new revised standard version it reads this way happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked or take the path that sinners tread or sit in the seat of scoffers but their delight is in the law of the lord and on his law they meditate both day and night [Music] they are like trees planted by streams of water which yield their fruit in its season and their leaves do not wither in all that they do they prosper the wicked are not so but are like chaff that the wind drives away therefore the wicked will not stand in judgment nor sinners in the congregation of the righteous verse 6 for the lord watches over the way of the righteous but the way of the wicked will perish amen the reading of god's word for the people of god would you bow your heads for a word of prayer eternal god our father we gather before your presence on this virtual platform but nonetheless we are here to worship you thanking you dear god for those of us who are in your house this sanctuary but also god grateful for those who are in their own homes thank you for your protection thank you dear god for your provision thank you for meeting all of our needs and even supplying some of our wants since the last time that we've gathered god we thank you thank you for being god thank you for creating this world and keeping this world for creating us and keeping us and so now god as we as we come into worship as we prepare our hearts and minds for worship we're praying god that you remove anything and everything that might hinder us from hearing you lord remove the distractions silence the noise so that our spirits might be in tune with yours will you allow your spirit to fall fresh among us that we might see your word and see you in a different way right now we ask oh god that you bless the band and bless brother hassan who'll be singing we pray to god for those who be working cameras and audio god bless this feed as it goes out to your people and to those who will receive it god we ask for a blessing we ask their god that that that you increase whatever it is they have so that they might understand their god that it's only because of you someone lord is looking for a savior will you introduce your son to jesus to them so that they might understand that jesus paid it all someone god is looking for a way out we pray for exit strategy dear god lord whatever the need might be and whoever's watching we just pray that you meet them at their point of need so lord we give this service to you now and simply ask that you have your way we today minister lisa upshaw is celebrating a birthday so we want to give a special shout out to minister lisa upshaw happy birthday lisa we thank god for you for your faithfulness i know y'all in the chat room so just chat it up with lisa and wish her a happy birthday a no bible study this coming thursday we will resume a week from thursday a week from thursday september the 30th we'll kick off our bible study zoo morning prayer call our ministers led us this morning want to thank god for them as well as our sunday school uh sister shalonda owens sisters dolores hammonds leading our adults and our young people in our sunday school again sister hammonds wanted me to emphasize that uh sunday school is open for children ages 10 and up ages 10 and up so kids young people just log into the zoom id and the passcode that you see there on the screen and you'll be able to join our sunday school so that's our upcoming schedule i also want to let you know that on saturday our credit union is open from noon until 2. listen to those of you that have been affected by the flood and you're looking for quite possibly the flood has has set you back a few dollars i won't you take advantage of our credit union if you are a member of our credit union um we have a loan sale that's going on if you're not a member you need to call the church see how you can become a member we have some great rates going on from now to the end of september this is not only for our back to school parents looking to do some stuff for the kids but quite possibly to those of you that need to make some improvements look at it read chapter one amen we're jumping right into it you won't you know sometimes when you start first day of school you know i used to love this when i was a kid first day of school first week of school when i was a young person a small kid we never did any work we spent the whole week distributing books but as i got to high school and especially in college first day we hit the ground running uh and and i hated it because i thought i'd at least have a break when school would start but we're doing the same thing with our bible study on thursday september the 30th we're going to discuss the book of crazy love and we're going to begin at chapter 1. we're going to start right at chapter one so join us get those books join us for sunday school 9 a.m every sunday join us for bible study beginning thursday september 30th at 7 00 pm listen let me just give a special shout out before we uh uh pray of our tithes and offerings i want to again give a special shout out to uh minister lisa upshaw her birthday and then on tomorrow tomorrow monday september the 20th brother carl parramore and i know i i listen i try not to give special birthday shout outs because then i'll be getting text messages like you didn't give me a shout out i apologize but these are individuals uh who who are who have a great impact on this church lisa of course what she does with our our wednesday morning devotionals as well as leading our ministers on our sunday morning prayer call but then also brother carl parramore is our resident horticulturalist that's what i'll call it uh he's better known as chocolate thunder amen a six foot something muscles and dark and and and has the greatest personality you could ever want and meet and so brother carl i know you watching this just [Music] listen brother hassan has has prepared this atmosphere for the message this morning my brothers and sisters i want to call your attention to the book of exodus a chapter 14 verses 13 through 16. we read this last week did it last week um but i wanted to i wanted to revisit it because this word uh is is powerful this word is is something that i believe that will encourage us even more this day but moses told the people don't be afraid just stand still and watch the lord rescue you today the egyptians you see today will never be seen again verse 14 the lord himself will fight for you just stay calm verse 15 and then the lord said to moses why are you crying out to me tell the people to get moving pick up your staff and raise your hand over the sea divide the water so the israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground let me read 15 and 16 again the lord said to moses why are you crying out to me tell the people to get moving pick up your staff raise your hand over the sea divide the water so the israelites can walk through the middle of the sea on dry ground amen my brothers and sisters i want to share with you this morning that you've got everything you need that you've got everything you need and if i could just put a side note to it i would just call it god's convincing command god's convincing command i am revisiting this text because there's a whole lot going on here in these four verses there's so much taking place that that even after last week's message the extra point and god has taken us so far and our role is to make the extra point but but i couldn't let go of this image this image that i see of moses and hundreds of thousands of people behind him along with egyptians surrounding them and a red sea what goes on in his mind in their minds as they're reaching this pivotal moment in their history they left at night with the possessions of the egyptians the morale was high they're excited because they've been freed from slavery but as they're leaving egypt i'm realizing that even though god has allowed them to leave there physically that some of them are still in egypt mentally that god has freed them from slavery but yet slavery is still inside of them moses has been given this command by god to lead god's people and so moses is leading them out of egypt and in this pivotal turn of events they are nearing this red sea and and they look behind them and the egyptians are closing in one text translates as as they're surrounding them so there's there's water in front of them there's the enemy around them and they began to cry out to moses you brought us out here to die we should have stayed in egypt my brothers and sisters at this moment i kept trying to figure out what is moses dealing with what is he struggling with what are you struggling with as you reach a pivotal moment in your life it's bad enough that that he has hundreds of thousands if not millions of people behind him crying out to him not just crying out complaining to him it's a convincing argument i would have rather stayed in slavery in egypt than to drown in this red sea it's the voices of the people behind him and around him that's giving a convincing argument but then then again quite possibly moses is having a conversation with himself as i shared with you last week he offers a word of encouragement to the people tells them take another look because you ain't gonna see them again the egyptians he's referring to but then in verse 15 god says to moses why are you crying out to me which is indicative of a conversation that moses is having with himself how many times have you been in this situation where your mind has convinced you of an outcome how many times has your mind told you it could not be done how many times has your mind told you not to do it again how many times has your mind told you that this is your end and your demise we not only have conversation convincing conversations with ourselves but with others there's voices going on non-stop and it is here in verse 16 god says i've given you everything that you need my brothers and sisters i wanted to share this message with someone this morning because you're feeling inadequate we live in a world of of of of feelings of inadequacy we we we look at what it is we have and we compare it to what others have and we we surmise that what we have isn't adequate enough to get a job done based upon what someone else has i this past week i just i just researched and i know in-depth research but i just examined all of the stuff that comes before us on a daily basis this past week i watched entertainers and stars make their way to the met gala and there they were adorned in all types of gowns and tuxedos and crazy outfits they looked flawless flawless to the naked eye and i said to myself there's someone watching this right now who feels inadequate about what they have what they're wearing and how they look they're comparing themselves to someone else there's someone who who was driving down the street reached a stop light and you looked over to the person next to you and what they were driving were impressed with what they had and no longer appreciated what you had you felt like your automobile was inadequate we do it with our homes we do it with our life we do with education we do it with money we do it with our children there's always a feeling of inadequacy and this is what i've learned is that the more we think about what it is we don't have or what we think we don't have it then changes our perspective i can't see a bright future i can't see a promising future because i don't have what it takes to get there and not only does it affect my perspective but i realize it then shapes my prayers how many of us are praying for more stuff come on now keep it real how many of us are praying for a better this or more that when you feel inadequate it it changes your perspective and it shapes your prayers and i'm realizing quite possibly that many of us are praying to god asking god to give us something or more of something not realizing that we've got you've got everything that you need when are you going to believe god when are you going to trust god when are you going to walk by faith you need you need more listen this past week um i was sharing with some colleagues i said listen there was a a seminar going on uh with preachers coming to talk about preaching and uh in a strange way i said listen i don't want to hear another sermon they looked at me they're all preaching i said i want to hear another sermon i said i'm tired of preaching it's like you tired you burn out no i'm not burnt out still got more preaching in me but i'm tired i'm tired of having uh to go before people and i'm tired of people waiting to hear from someone else as to what god has to say now don't get me wrong because preaching is vital it's important in the life of worship but but i feel as though how many more sermons do you need to understand that god is with you god has equipped you and god wants to use you how many more messages how many more words of encouragement do i have to give how many more sermon titles and texts do i have to use an exegete for you to understand that god has equipped you for everything and no sooner than you hear from the minister no sooner that you have worship reality hits you right the bills hit you the the health issues hit you and everything that you shouted about from the 10 to 11 o'clock hour has faded away and now you're back asking god do this do that when god is declaring i've given you everything that you need how much more do you want this is this is off topic but as i was preparing for this years ago a few years back um the singer and the actor tyrese uh he had a meltdown on social media uh apparently he and his his baby's mama was having some issues financially and it seemed like she was she was taking him to the bank and um there he was bless his heart crying out on his instagram or whatever he was on and he was crying he said how much more do you want of me that was a running meme for the lap for the two weeks or more that that tyrese was just putting it out how much more i felt this pain i mean not with the drama but just how much more and sometimes i feel as though god is saying how much more do i have to give you do i have to show you that i've equipped you to do what you're facing right now that's what god says to moses as he's standing there god says why are you crying out to me i know that i know the the words are convincing from the people i know that you've even convinced yourself that you're not equipped for this task but god says i've done all of the lead work to prepare you for this moment let me preach for a moment because god has done everything to prepare you for this moment see it's it's the convincing arguments that we have it's the convincing arguments that we have with people and with ourselves that we are not ready that it's not gonna happen that i'm inadequate as moses is facing the red sea he's got people behind him he has voices in his head and he's crying out to god god do something and god says no you do something so here it is i realize god doesn't give the command before god does the leg work what's the leg work few points i want to share with you write it down don't just look at the camera don't just look at the screen i should say but write it down this might help you in the upcoming days weeks to come because you're gonna face a red sea and it won't necessarily be a red sea but your red sea might be your health it might be the loss of a loved one it might be finances it might be a job it might be your children you fill in the blank but we're all going to face a red sea and just like moses we're going to have friends and family around us talking us out of what we're trying to accomplish so you've got them in their convincing arguments but then you've got your own head and you've been trying to stay positive and you've been trying to to to mark your movements and you you're convincing yourself that it's going to work out only to face the red sea and your enemy now what well here's what you need to know first and foremost god will not lead you to a red sea until god first cultivates you cultivate that's the first point god cultivates long before moses was called by god god was cultivating moses god i wish i had time to do this i just mentioned call our resident horticulturalist i'll use him as our example so so a couple of weeks ago um we have some roses in the back of our house on in our yard that i noticed had been cut down they were still blooming but they were cut down and i know who did it i knew carl had been by the house this whole summer i've been watching carl i love him to death but he drives me crazy in a good way because call is constantly tweaking the flowers and the yard at any given moment his car will be around the house and and there he is and and part of me wants to say and i'll have before call why don't you leave this stuff alone here it is you've planted it it's growing it's good but carl says no rev i hear him you got to understand because even though it's good now i'm preparing it for the next season i wish you could feel me this morning i want somebody to know that god cultivates call is already cultivating the land for the wintertime even though it's still 80 degrees outside because carl understands that the flowers that's blooming now will eventually face a harsh winter so he has to begin giving those flowers attention now even in the season that has not yet arrived i hope somebody understands that as moses has reached this red sea god has already cultivated moses for this moment in time i allowed you to be born as an egyptian i allowed you to understand what royalty looked and lived like i allowed you to be a shepherd out in midian for 40 years and i've allowed you to go before pharaoh and demand let my people go god says for well over 80 years moses i have prepared you for this moment god cultivates and someone must understand right now that where you are in life right now yes this pivotal moment that you're facing right now you just didn't end up there it was god who noticed you and raised you and created you and cultivated you for this moment carl says the season hasn't arrived yet but i'm preparing it for the season and whoever you are wherever you are whatever it is you're going through right now god has cultivated you whoo and even before you knew there was a god god was already cultivating you she's even before you said yes lord i follow you jesus god already had you in mine so please don't act like whatever it is you're facing is an accident it's not god has cultivated you now here it is after god cultivates you god then calls you i'm breaking it down but i'm understanding that god can't call you until god cultivates you because what good is it for god to call me to something but i haven't been cultivated for it come here jesus now i'm understanding 30 years he lived before he started his ministry we understood when he was born in bethlehem that he was the son of god but it took 30 years of cultivation for him to leave his mother and father and go get baptized by john the baptist i want somebody to know that whoever you are wherever you are god was cultivating you even before you knew there was a god and then god says i want to use you yes that's the call that's it that's the call as god called moses come on y'all remember the text there's a bush that's burning it's on fire but it's not being consumed at that moment god reintroduces i'll say himself to moses and from that moment on the call begins my brothers and sisters listen god has cultivated you god has or maybe god is calling you right now god is calling you to whatever it is and this is the whole thing about inadequacy because because the truth is that the truth is this is your call i want to be transparent just for a moment there are times in which i look at other colleagues and sometimes i wish that that was me yeah i know you think like oh you're jealous you know it's not jealousy but it's just like i can do that i was watching a colleague who was on national television around the same age he's known throughout the country he's cool that's my brother i know him but as i was watching him i was like i felt inadequate and then god had to show me through this text that's his call i've given you your call and what i realized is we're so busy looking at what other people are doing that we fail to appreciate and recognize and walk in our own calling who cares what someone else is doing it's hard enough trying to maintain this thing i was laughing i i listen music i love music i love music and and just before this live stream started i was watching hassan or listening uh to brother hassan and the band uh warm up and there are parts of me that's jealous jealous of even there's a harmony that takes place the band is in sync and there's times in which i wish it's like lord give me that mic give me a key so i can sing let me blend in with the band but god has to remind me that's not your call your call is to preach the word his call is to sing their call is to play we all have a calling here it is and they were cultivated to do that so if you ever got a question about whether or not you're prepared go back and look at the cultivation process god cultivates god calls god convinces because some of us need convincing the conversation between moses and god with god with moses is calling you you can read about that but the convincing continues in exodus 14 that as moses is is standing there he's been cultivated he's been called there's a red sea but there's also enemies and there's also his own people in his head and god has to tell him pick up your staff there it is parenthetically god is saying to moses you've got everything you need pick it up here it is i love it i love it i love it so when you're facing a red sea and you're trying to get to the other side how about a boat how about a canoe how about a jet ski even though they didn't have jet skis back then but how about something god that that i can use that's made for water this is what separates god from humans because we think logically and god thinks spiritually god moves spiritually and god has to convince you that yes this staff can get you over there no boats no no ramps no no no vest no no canoes no no a staff and how many of you are looking at what you have in your hand facing your red sea and you have already deduced it's not enough and so god has to convince us and god tells moses pick it up my brothers and sisters i want you to take an assessment of what you have not what i have not what they have not what he or she has but what do you have and as you're facing your own red sea god says pick it up because you're not just picking that up but god says i am with you as you pick it up if i could jump up and shout right now i would because that's what faith is all about faith is picking up a staff while i have millions of people behind me while i have my enemies surrounding me and a red sea in front of me but but god says i'm going to convince you that you've got everything that you need pick your staff up and raise it over the waters because the power isn't in the staff the powers in the god who gave you that staff preach and god is saying to someone right now god is trying to convince you god wants to convince you why because you've been convinced by family and friends you've been convinced by your own self god says let me speak yeah i hear what the i hear what my people are saying to you moses and i hear what you're saying in your own head but god says let me convince you that if you simply take what i've given you and hold it up stretch out your hand and part these waters you don't need a boat you've got everything that you need and some of you are facing your red seas and you're crying out to god for more if you give me more i can do this if you give me more money i can go back to school if if you if you give me more time i can be a better parent if you extend my years i can live a healthier life but god says i've given you what you need for right now quit asking for more and use what you have and quit crying out to god now i need to put an asterisk by that because i don't want anybody to misinterpret what i'm saying quit crying out to god we will always be in conversation with god but at this pivotal moment in moses's life and the history of the children of israel god is saying to moses this is no time for you to cry out to me that has its purpose but right now you need to pick up what you have and stretch it out and that's the command god cultivates point one god calls point two after after god calls you god convinces you god allows things to happen to convince you that god is real and after god convinces you god commands you to go forth and i want to convince somebody right now that can't nobody do it like jesus i want to convince somebody as you listen to any and everybody else you need to trust god you need to step out on faith because you've got everything that you need and the scripture says that they crossed on dry ground my brothers and sisters i want you to be blessed today blessed in knowing that god has cultivated you and still is cultivating you that god is calling you to a higher level to deeper depths that god is convincing you that you plus god equals greatness and then god will command you to do it so pick it up stretch it out and watch god make a way i pray that you've been blessed by this message this
