good morning everybody let's take out our notes thanks for getting up so early in the morning now each of you are potentially great leaders inside of you there is a wonderful person with a dream for God now remember every single one of us has one a dream a dream of what you can be for God a dream of how your life can count for eternity if God didn't want you to count for eternity he wouldn't have had you born I love the wonderful poem of dr. Seuss and it's happy birthday to me goes like this if you'd never been born what would you be you could have been a rock or a toad or a tree but worse than all of that you could have been a wasn't now I wasn't has no fun at all no he doesn't it wasn't just isn't he isn't present but you you are here now isn't this Pleasant today you are you and it is truer than true that there's no one alive that is u're than you shout out loud I'm glad of Who I am thank God I'm not a rock a clam or a ham or a dusty old jar of gooseberry jam I am what I am and it's a great thing to be if I should say so myself happy birthday to me nice God had you born for a reason how many of you agree with that raise your hand yeah every every single one of us has a god-given design and plan now for fear of making mistakes though we don't do much we live cautiously we don't take initiative we make sure that everybody else can cross the creek before we try it but we won't be the first we want to be a part of the crowd but we don't want to stand out in it we we want to serve God but we don't want to maybe fail in our serving of God one man asked another he said in fact it was James Garfield when he was president of a college prior to being president itíd states and he said how can I get my son to succeed more quickly he said I'd suggest that you have him increases frequency of failure because you see so we're so afraid of making a mistake we never succeed and if you would increase your rate of failure you might get closer to success because often success is just on the other side of the plateau of failure because it is there that you learn now there are certain mistakes you want to avoid but there's some minor mistakes you don't you have to be okay about making it cuts into who you are a little bit your reputation maybe gets you a little embarrassed humiliates you a little bit as reading Mother Teresa's book and on humility and she said if you want to learn humility you must be willing to be humiliated because if you are not willing to be humiliated you will never be able to learn humility at that boy that's pretty simple and straightforward isn't it but most of us don't want to be humiliated in the least that's why I say the greatest test of a servant is how he responds when he's treated like one till we all want to be known as servants that's popular religiously correct but we don't want anyone to treat us like a servant well it's just not available so there's some mistakes we make and there's some that we want to avoid and we've been talking about ten mistakes we all make mistakes but there's ten mistakes that are pretty germane to leaders and managers and pastors and so I want to go over the last six that we talked about and the first people say Wayne what are some of the mistakes you wish you would have avoided well here's one of the first one not only I do but often people do is personally now it's not communing enough and you can put spouse in there but I'll just say with my wife I and if you want to know more about it you weren't here last week you can get the DVD of last week but let me just run over a few things here the first is not communing enough with my wife sometimes in ministry you get going and your wife kind of just watches but remember 85% of your life and the things that you do anybody can do 10% of what you do someone with a modicum of training can do but 5% of your life only you can do this is part of that only I can be a husband to my wife Anna nobody else can do that in the universe only I can be a dad to my kids nobody else can do that only I can keep myself spiritually fit I can't delegate that out only I can keep myself physically fit I cannot delegate that out I will be held accountable in that day not for what others could have done but what only I can do do you know that that 5% you get that 5% right the other 95% falls in line but if you get the other 95% good and you miss this 5% everything implodes it says five percent that's the target of our lives that's why I say to people I say that people work harder on yourself than you work on the rest because when you work on yourself everybody else becomes automatic beneficiaries and one of those is my spouse my wife Anna only I can take time to enjoy life if I don't nobody's gonna do it for me that's a part of my five percent by the way that life calendar that I've talked about to the pastor's that's what that's about you put that in that center section there to remind you only I can do this and I make sure that I do those every week the second thing is not only not communing enough with my wife but another mistake that I've made in the past and as I think back over it is is not conferring or I'll just say reading but it really means to confer not reading the word enough not conferring with the word enough we confer with Peter Drucker or this management book or Jim Collins and those are all nice but we don't confer with the Word of God this is the best business book in the world right here if you're a business person this is the best business book this is the best home act an economics book is the best book on wife or husband tree this is the best book on parenting kids but we'll buy all kinds of other books and nothing wrong with that but make sure that there's a balance here I didn't read this enough how often I talked with pastors and they don't read the word I mean they use it for a sermon but they don't use it to eat for themselves it's why it's so important for us here at New Hope to continue to keep our daily devotions in and then the third is not repenting quickly enough not just not repenting not repenting what quickly enough I mean we usually come to succumb to repentance when the pain gets to the point where we can't bear it anymore but we've got to repent sooner as I said last time if we if someone if we take something that's ours like this this is my paper and and let's say benedict sets it aflame Wow what's burning my hand let it go no it's my paper I've got my stuff on it ow ow let it go no it's mine it's mine I worked hard for this paper oh it's burning my hand it will let it go Wow and now you've got all these burns on your hand look what you did no you didn't do it I did it why cuz I wouldn't let go there's gonna be a lot of people igniting flames and igniting lust or igniting anger igniting in you a sense of greed or or avarice igniting in you a sense of disheartened meant of discontent and discouragement let it go the faster you repent of it Lord I've been I've been just basking in this thing I've been soaking in greed for a long time I've been soaking in this thing that I've been allowing my mind to fantasize on it just too long when you're gonna let it go until it burns your brain one of the mistakes I made was I didn't let it go fast enough and when I finally did it left scars I think if I had to do it all over again I'd repent a lot faster and remember the word repentance all you Greek scholars is a Greek word what Metta new asar metanoia the word newest is mine metas to change you know what repentance means change your mind change your mind about it stop thinking repent quit stop the set the fourth thing is losing a sense of privilege whatever you're doing whether you're at a business you're a mom you're a dad your fiancee you're a student at the Bible College everything in your life has to be a major privilege because I think God is just let me say it this way because if you don't have our sense of privilege of being here this morning oh it's a dude you had to get up someone forced me oh the shuttles came early I had to come once you lose a sense of privilege you're no longer a grateful person and I think God is just more concerned about us being grateful than just about anything else when your son or your daughter is grateful you want to give them everything but if they're not grateful even what they have you want to take away isn't that right that sound biblical you better believe it the one who had one Talent so that was afraid I just put it in the ground the one who had five doubled it took the initiative could he have made a mistake absolutely but he went for it and when the master came back he said to the one who buried their talents and you wicked and lazy what you wicked and lazy did you know that we can become wicked and lazy you wicked and lazy slave you could have at least put it in the bank and got some interest for me you could have contributed something to the kingdom but because you just chose to maintain that even what you have will be taken away from you and given to somebody else you see we've got to be so grateful that God has afforded to us as opportunity to lead to share to serve to do something to add contribution to the kingdom even if it's only four percent interest and if you lose that sense of privilege you're no longer grateful and I think God's more concerned about us being grateful than just about anything else and so once you lose your privilege of being a husband what your marriage start to erode being a husband or a wife or a student getting up in the morning the privilege to serve Jesus is absolutely amazing otherwise we'll be like what Janis Joplin sometimes you don't know what you got until it's gone and so we've got to make sure that we don't ever lose a sense of privilege when I think back over my life when my life started to take a downward slide is when I no longer had a sense of privilege of being a shepherd here I thought I got to do this again how much do they expect me to do it can't get out of this just too hard too much pretty soon was no longer a privilege it was a burden and then what happened was I couldn't receive any more energy and strength from God because I was so wrapped up in myself if I were grateful God would have given me everything I needed and more but when you lose a sense of gratefulness and privilege even what you have will be taken away from you and then number five and this comes right along with it a lack of solitude it's so important for you to be able to get solid suitors to to get away to make sure that you're on the right track you reassess yourself sometimes I'll stop by overlooking Sandy's and I'll just stop there and sit on the wall and say Lord how am i doing how am i doing and I would scan my life with my wife my children my devotion my thoughts how am i doing God and as I scan this all of a sudden I got to work on that how Lord and I keep scanning other areas of my life am i okay and my sense of privilege am i serving am i initiating am i taking time for solitude like this so you balance because you've got a balanced boredom if boredom starts increasing than you have you're out of balance do you know that you can be in a busy ministry with tons of potential and be bored because you don't see the initiative the potential that surrounds you I say to leaders people say Wayne do you love people I said no what no I don't really love them what do you mean well I love people but I love the potential that lies within people because I I one of my gifts is exhortation and I want to stir the best out of you the reason I'm here right now is what am i doing I'm wanting to stir the best out of you and so solitude is very very important because in solitude you start seeing potential again oh man I could do that Lord you want me to do this don't you and solitude is huge and then number six goes right along with this one as well you come to a point when you lose a sense of privilege you start doing what I like versus what God needs I start doing what I like in the church or in the job of the business rather than what God says this is gonna be important to advance your business this is gonna be important to advance your family that's gonna be important to advance the ministry after a while we just kind of do what we like to do say well that's our gift and passion really that's an excuse to be lazy and so we put way too much emphasis on giftedness and not enough on gumption way too much on talent and not enough on tenacity way too much on individual passions and desires and not enough on just plain initiative and so remember we've got to make sure that we do what is needed to be done and not just what I'd like to do go down and you will find a donkey and bring it up here and if the owner comes and asks what are you doing with that just tell him you remember the master hath need of it and he'll give it to you there's some times you say well it's not my gift there's not my passions the Lord have to need you for you to do that and that's good enough get er done because that needs to get done otherwise we get become little silos here in the kingdom of gods like well it's not my gift not my passion would you just stop just do it just do it those are some of the mistakes that I've made six let me give you now four others that can you say man you make a lot of mistakes don't you so do you like it I can hear what you're thinking number seven and this is a very important one you know I did wrong it's I and I'll explain it to you I burned the wrong fuels so what does that mean there's a lot of fuels that motivate you in life name some of them is greed a pretty strong fuel yes see if you could if you put kerosene in the car it'll burn may run or chug I don't know may not at all if you put gasoline and a lower octane it'll go it might skip a little bit higher octane is better but if you put nitric oxide in that gasoline whoever really goes called NOx or you put jet fuel in something even more so you have different fuels that you can burn in your life to get you going in the morning and get you going into something get you to give you some courage give you initiative give you the the impetus to do something and one of the things is greed that is is that a pretty strong fuel you think well absolutely absolutely what are some other fuels what about lust is that a strong fuel yet fuels about hundred billion dollars a year in pornography and sexual toys and escapades and you add it's the sex trafficking it's multi billions and billions of dollars you think that's a fuel sure what about pride its pride a fuel will that get you going yeah yeah what are some others vanity sure again hate yeah hate is a huge fuel what else maybe some go ahead throw my ambition yeah personal ambition fear is another one you're afraid and causes you to flight it'll get you at in into action the desire for power what about popularity well let give you some fuel what about insecurity here's some scriptures I want someone to look up second Corinthians 5:14 raise your hand real quick five second Corinthians 5:14 one person raised your hand good thank you and then someone else look up 1st Corinthians 16:13 and 14 okay and then 1st Peter 5 - who's got that first Peter 5 - quickly someone raise your hand okay grow it way over there alright I burned the wrong kinds of fuels for a lot of years when I started off I burned the fuel of insecurity because I was insecure I would do things I'd overdo things because I wanted to make sure that I was pleasing people when you become a people pleaser a lot of times that's your burning the fuel of insecurity is that a fuel yeah it is that'll get your engine going others prominence we push in ministry or in leadership because we want to be noticed by somebody and it becomes a fuel will it burn absolutely it'll burn maybe the need for money I just need more money will that be a few little burn oh my goodness turns into a God's called Mammon what about possessions gaining more possessions is that a fuel absolutely all of these are fuels you need to be able to recognize what fuel you are burning a lot of times you'll only find that in solitude when all the voices are quiet except God's voice anger can be a fuel I'm angry about something and I have a low-grade fever of anger so when a discussion comes anywhere near to where it what I'm angry about bang it ignites me whoosh and I and that's why people have what they call pet peeves or Oh or that person's opinionated so you don't want to even get near that discussion about what he is angry about her has not yet resolved in his life because it explodes on you think what in the world well it's because it was a wrong fuel and you'll see that all the time now you say what if you've got a wrong fuel burning in you right now what if it is insecurity what if it is a need for prominence because they've been overlooking me I don't feel like they give me enough voice that they have meetings and I'm not invited I've gotta get I gotta be noticed a little bit more and so we start going to people and if your life is a gift we start saying here here's a gift here here here here's another gift here let man you know what that's called it's called self promotion does that is that fueled by something absolutely is it a wrong fuel absolutely now yet understand some of the fuels that got you started or wrong but it's okay just change the fuel because that which burned fuel look that which ignited your engine and ran your engine before will now destroy your engine within if you don't change fuels fast enough once you recognize it could see the dangerous thing is you recognize it and you keep burning it because it works that's called deceiving yourself deceiving yourself and James talks about that deceiving yourself so once you recognize that you've got to switch fuels it's a decision you must make well let's take a look at some of these scriptures the first one is second Corinthians 5:14 who has that okay please read it nice and loudly hmm we are compelled or controlled or constrained some other scriptures say are motivated or impelled by what the the love of Christ you've got to be able to switch fuels you find in Ephesians where is it 5:18 or so it says do not get drunk with wine wherein it is excess but be filled with the holy spirit you see what he's saying you can use drunkenness as a fuel you know I want to ask that girl out I want to ask her for a day I want a baby say we use that as a fuel to give us courage false courage and the scripture says do not get drunk with or impelled with or motivated with or fuelled by wine wearing that is excess gives you courage to go pick up on a girl whatever it might be but instead be filled with the holy spirit there's another fuel the filling of the Holy Ghost and so when you're filled with the Holy Spirit what compels you the love of Christ when you speak speak to the pastor just for a second when you speak on Sundays or midweeks or in any time it has to be because I love these people so dearly and I want the miracles of God I want the blessings of God to be on these people I want them to do well in their businesses I want them to to reflect Christ I want them to be ambassadors for Christ in this city because we've got to do it together we can't do it alone we've got to do it together and because of your love for Christ it impels you your love for the people do you understand how that converges into a phenomenal phenomenal ministry but it's based in love let's read the next one here first Corinthians 16 verses 13 and 14 please where are you getting this strength to be strong to stand firm it's cuz of love when you love your kids you'll do anything for them if someone said to me Wayne here's an icy i-beam going across a ravine and it's from here to you alright and so it's it's icy and it's slippery and if I said to you Paul I'll give you ten dollars to walk that icy beam that's this big and it has a 200-foot drop underneath you give you ten bucks walk on that thing now it's icy and slippery yeah would you do it yeah no I'd be crazy if you did I better ask somebody else cuz he's just not thinking well is to stay awake I don't think he is alright Charles so no I wouldn't walk on that beam it's from here to you and it's this thin and it's got ice on it you've got leather-soled shoes no well what about a hundred bucks no what about a thousand oh that was crazy but what if my child was on the other side and if I didn't get to that child he would fall off that cliff I'd slide on that they walk like a penguin you don't have to pay me a dime why because the motivation or the fuel is love for my child not money if someone has a greater love for money than people they do it but you and I must be people who have a love for people and for Jesus Christ and when that is you you'll lay down your life for the things of God you understand and so you've got to recognize what's fueling you and learn how to change fuels by the way you have to do this in flight you got to change fuels in flight because if you're burning the fuel of insecurity or fear anger or avarice greed or hatred discouragement or rebellion they're all fuels because you can be a person with rebellion and it'll make you do some pretty strong stuff need for prominence or popularity greater possessions whatever it might be you've got to be able to when you recognize it this is really tough but you've got to be able to change fuels in flight how do you do that solitude repentance so you go to solitude and the Lord speaks that to you and you begin to repent or change your mind change your mind burning the wrong fuels the mistake that I made I found it out way too late I wish I would have learned it sooner number eight not controlling now by the way there's some things you can control and some things you cannot but here's another leadership mistake that happens all the time not controlling your actions your thoughts not being able to control your thoughts I want you to listen very carefully as I say this Satan is a head hunter your mind is his battlefield your imagination is his trophy Satan is a headhunter your mind is his battlefield your imagination is his trophy you see because there is one of the things that is the image of God that he's given to us and you know what it is imagination God created us in his imagination how he imaged us or he saw us before we were it's called imagination or in his image when you take an x-ray is called imaging process you're seeing things that people cannot see and so when God created you in His image he gave you something and it's called imagination that's why take a look everything that you see here except the human body everything you see here the lights the sound system that takes my voice puts it digitally into an amplifier and then increases the amplitude of it so that you can hear this pen this board that guitar everything that you see or except the human body started in somebody's what imagination and then it was quote-unquote created built whatever it might be we know we don't create anything only God creates but you understand what I'm saying started in your imagination somebody's imagination right here and then after a while even that computer it's now created or built and so you have use of it you think wow that's amazing well that started in someone's imagination everything that you can do is in your imagination everything that you can accomplish and I say well Wayne that's just like we we kind of self help them no no just think about it I'm I understand that field I'm not going into that field I'm just simply saying that God created you in His image because we can get so spiritual that word of no earthly good you know they say you can get you can be so heavenly minded you're no earthly good and there's some people when you're trying to explain things to them it will you know it's he goes and yeah that I know that I'm not dumb but see what they do is they take that so they can hide behind it so you don't have to apply any academic rigor to any philosophy or thought and so it's easy to get religious and hide behind it don't do that if you're gonna be profitable in the world if you're gonna make contribution and the legislature anything you can't just say well the Bible says and the Holy Ghost does it know they're gonna say explain that to me tell it to me in my language do you have any more academic rigor in your mind your brain to somehow articulate the concept that you have within you that doesn't use religious colloquialisms because often if you are not able to articulate those concepts within you they look at Christians and say you know what all you guys do is you gather together and you do spiritual religious mental calisthenics and then you go out and live just like anybody else does now I know I'm playing devil's advocate but you understand what I'm saying so we have to be as was said of Daniel and Shadrach Meshach and Abednego I found these men to be 10 times better than my magicians and conjurors and that's what we need to be men and women who think better live better why because a Spirit of God liveth in us and so you've got to be able to control your thoughts on the inside because Satan is a headhunter I tell young men now women forgive me because I'm just gonna be a little blunt here alright I say to men because when they say well that girl got me into an affair and she did this and I said you know okay forgive me all right everybody all right okay I say to the guy said your sex organ is not between your legs it's between your ears so your thinking is poor you're thinking is loose you've got to control your thoughts so what if we opened up a hundred x-rated theaters in this city and they were free no let's say 200 free x-rated theaters and we show pornography in it any time of the day and kids could come regardless of age would that bother you pastor if I had a company called x-rated America and I did that cuz it because I can sell advertisement would that bother you better believe everybody nod like this come on just not yeah help me out here I'm trying to get you involved like who come on Oh everybody not like this not okay would that bother you go thank you thank you yes it would bother me too but the same potential lies in this room because in your mind is an x-rated theater you can build nobody will ever know and it's free it doesn't matter what your age is you can go and you can watch stuff anytime and the devil is gonna incite that but through the computer in other ways you start priming those pumps and if you don't know how as the fusion says put on the helmet of salvation whole sods oh is that word completeness that my mind is complete in Christ don't take away from it well look at this thing no no it's already complete don't mess with it I'm gonna stay with Christ anything there that is against Christ Antichrist begins to chip away at Who I am if you don't understand this and you can sing that chorus again and again I know I am but you know you don't see that's a dangerous thing about Christians we have all of the colloquialisms we don't have the lifestyle so we have to think about what we are singing and when we say no my mind is whole in Christ a helmet of salvation if something chips away you're chipping away at Who I am not gonna do it you're stealing my identity look up Daniel 7:25 somebody 7 Daniel 7:25 I'll just quote it to you it goes like this talking about Lucifer Satan and this will be a very important one for you to understand and it says this it says and he will speak out against the most ty and he will wear down the Saints of the Holy One you know what that word to wear down Saints it really comes from you know you see a coin of Roman coin whose whose value is inherent in that coin if it's in quarter ounce of gold it's worth X amount because that quarter ounce of gold is here it's not like the reserve that we have you know US Federal Reserve Note it's worth Zippo but this one here is inherent in the goal that it has now after a while by use of just commerce by reason of use and commerce that image let's say it's Caesar Augustus his image on it it gets worn down just by treason of exchange and trade and commerce going from hand to hand therefore the amount of gold decreases so do you remember those money changers where they had the scales see what they would do is if if you gave me Jim if you gave me a coin that says $10 but I noticed the image of Caesar whatever is worn way down it's not worth $10 cuz you've got some gold missing it's on somebody's hands out there we don't know so I would take your $10 gold piece and I would take a weight that is exactly what a $10 gold piece should weigh and I put your coin on this side and if it goes up then it's not worth $10 I look at the scale and I say it's your coin is eight dollars and ninety two cents you owe me a dollar and eight cents more well wait a minute that says ten dollars yeah but it doesn't have ten dollars in it anymore for my reason of use you have worn down the image and it's not worth ten dollars you owe me a dollar and eight cents more to equal ten dollars you understand that's that's why they were saying in the Old Testament don't use false weights they would put a lighter weight on there and take your $10 thing or a heavier weight and it's like everything you put on there they make money off of you it's a false weight and balance false weight and scales and so God spoke about that but if it were true then they would find out that that's not worth $10 now the same thing is true with you and me Satan wants to take the image of Christ and wear it down on you so that you feel worth less worthless and Satan wants to wear you down wear down the Saints are the most time don't let them do that know who you are in Christ and don't let things start chipping away at you controlling your thoughts Satan is a headhunter Romans chapter 2 says this do not be conformed to the world but be transformed by the what renewing of your mind so that you might prove what the will of God is that which is good and acceptable and perfect the only way that you're gonna know the will of God that which is good and acceptable and perfect is to make sure that you're renewing your mind back to Christ renewing remitting painting that image again how do you do that when we come to worship here at New Hope I tell you I hear me say it often don't you dare skimp on worship Wednesday night was powerful worship here at our midweek and what's happening is I'm riemann ting the image of christ back in me again that which was worn down through sin no malevolence no just by reason of use by serving god working in the church doing this or doing that i get depleted and i get spent and the image of god is tarnished and worn down because your sinful no just by reason of use so there's times you as a servant here at new hope you're gonna be depleted and spent well should I just leave no get re minted get REME insets let God stamp his image again and he'll pour himself into you and worship does that reading the Word of God on a daily basis does that you understand how that ream intz you again it restores the image of Christ in you one of the mistakes I made was I wasn't controlling my thoughts enough and I wasn't renewing the spirit of my mind he said well what what are some of the ways you can do that you know when you get bad thoughts or doubts about anything can I encourage you to always doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith see a lot of times I talked to young Christians and they have a doubt about Christ a doubt about the word doubt about this and they and then they just kind of throw away their faith and said wait a minute no why don't you doubt your doubts before you doubt your faith because your faith isn't much it's gonna be much more eternal than your doubt your doubt is passing why settle for a doubt and throw a way of faith settle for faith and throw away the doubts well how do you do that talk to yourself talk to yourself consult yourself counsel yourself imagine now you're gonna go Wayne you're weird no no listen it's almost like sometimes I'll sit there and I'll say I'm mad about this and that and then I'll stop and I'll say but wait a minute God's given me this what if my wife were taken away what if my kids were gone but if I did do that what would happen you know what I do I fast forward the tape okay if I continued in this affair if I continued in this thing that's just here in my fascination or in my my mind if I'm just fantasizing about this just carry it through his empty Greek oh yeah okay you do this and then you do that and you do this you do that now there it is all right now what am I gonna forfeit now just about everything I've lived for up to this point and do you think that's gonna really pan out and it's going to give you gray great deep wholeness in your life no I'll always feel bad about it good rewind the tape and then renew your mind how do you do that really yeah I just consult myself turn with me to Nehemiah Nehemiah chapter five Ezra and Nehemiah Esther Nehemiah five and verse six and seven I was angry when I heard the outcry they were bilking one another and and they were going against their Jewish brothers charging them usery fees so he says I was angry when I heard their outcry in these words and listen to this verse seven and I consulted with myself and I brought charges against the nobles Nehemiah said I sat down and just counseled myself acts 5/7 another interesting and little passage that'll blow your mind Acts chapter 5 and verse 7 no that's not it no I'll have to find it but it's someone of you can find it it actually says and I it seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to me to put no greater burden on you than these essentials that's pretty good Peter Paul says that it seemed good to me and the Holy Spirit that's pretty neat what is it they're consulting them themselves they're thinking deeply about a problem in the presence of Christ this is so important here control your thoughts I made a mistake on that let it go too far and then number 9 maintaining versus initiating if you're in a business and if you need to be supervised you will be worth half as much as what you could have been paid but if you can supervise yourself you're worth twice as much because let's say steve is here and he's one of my employees and I speak on business terms for a second and he's a good guy if someone holds his feet to the fire so then I hire Benedict to be the supervisor and then you kind of do the heavy lifting in the grunting but I've got to hire him to supervise you if you could have supervised yourself I would have given you a lot of his pay because I wouldn't need him but if we're always looking to give the least amount that we can and get the most amount that we can by giving the lease and just barely slipping through then you got to have someone hired to supervise you and just think if you could have been your own supervisor and if you could have initiated things you'd be worth a lot more to the company wouldn't you if I can find some person that understands the values of an organization and supervises themselves in order to take initiative to add and contribute to that company he's worth his weight in gold but if I have to have supervisors all the time you won't ever get paid what you think you should why because we have a thought that maintaining is good enough just doing what I'm told well what if you're not told and I play video games in my office and I checked my email 30 times and I look up stuff on the internet that I'd like to buy off of amazon.com and I read some articles and some fun YouTube videos and I say whoo I had a full day today you either maintain or initiate and you know there's seasons in my life I just started maintaining and I stopped initiating don't ever do that and then finally the last one number ten and this is going to be mostly towards I guess it could be towards businessmen as well but let me specifically speak to those of you in ministry as the pastors are here but number ten living a one-dimensional life one-dimensional life what does that mean that means this when I came to Hawaii I was so intent on building this church pioneering this church the first four years I moved from Hilo to Honolulu that sounds crazy but the first four years I never touched the water except for water baptism I never swam and ever surfed I never went out in the water just enjoyed the waves now I'm living in Hawaii and I don't touch the water why because I was so intent and focused on what the church had to do I think that's part of the the thing because that that later on eroded into a burnout as I was living such a one-dimensional life now on on the one side it sounds very very focused and that's great but on the other side it's it's overkill that's why Ecclesiastes Solomon says be careful that you don't have an over devotion to books did you have a multi-dimensional life that you can take time to enjoy life thank you the scripture about seemed good to me into the Holy Spirit is acts 15 28 x-15 28 it seemed good to me into the Holy Spirit to put no greater burden on you than these essentials and so that he was consulting with himself thank you but we'll go back to one dimensional life turn with me to First Samuel 1618 and I'm gonna go through some things quickly and then we'll close it off because we're running out of time First Samuel 16 8 teen it talks about the person of David and I'll watch and see how this david has a multi-dimensional life if you brought david up here who was the elite guerrilla warfare specialist that could hide among the philistines that could route the Moabites that could kill all of the gadites or anyone that would come against him this guy was the best of the best if i said ladies and gentlemen the guerrilla elite general david if David would come in here you you'd think he would have like a red bandanna on his head like Rambo he'd come out with scars and a sling they'd have this big muscle thing like Michelangelo's sculpture and he'd come out with a javelin or something or a sword slingshot instead it says here listen to this First Samuel 16 and we'll start around verse 18 it says one of the young men described David and he said behold I have seen the son of Jesse the Bethlehem ight who was skillful as a musician a man of Valor brave prudent and speech handsome man and the Lord is with them six qualities number one he was a skillful musician he said wait a minute he's supposed to be a guerrilla warrior ladies and gentlemen David he comes out with a guitar or can I sing you a song first I just wrote this last night no no man you where's your sword and sling oh yes in the back room but I get this cool song you'll love this song well hot yeah he was a skillful skillful musician he learned how to play the harp he probably learned how to play the lyre he had to do chords and runs and arpeggios that took time you know what it gave him solitude where he could think in fact he wrote so many songs there is a hail hold Kindle of his songs it's called Psalms it's all of his poems yeah but he was too busy no not busy enough I guess because he wrote a bunch of songs he didn't have just a one-dimensional life he was a skillful musician and then he was a mighty man of Valor yes when war time came he could pick up a spear he could pick up a sling and you better stay out of his way he was a warrior yes sir yes sir he was he was prudent in speech what yeah it was prudent in speech he could articulate concepts within it he didn't have just religious colloquialisms that he hid behind he was prudent in speech he knew when to speak and when not to speak the fifth one was he was a handsome man doesn't mean he was like the mr. universe who no it just meant that he knew that if he didn't take care of himself nobody else would only he could keep himself physically fit mentally fit his attitude that's what makes you beautiful ladies Leon Tucker once interviewed an Amish woman I'm sorry a Quaker woman and he said what is the secret of your beauty I don't want to be full word or anything just you're just really pretty if I'm not trying to put a make on you but what's the secret of your beauty oh she said oh well she said for my eyes I use compassion for my smile I use truth for my countenance I use love for my figure I use uprightness and for my hands the lotion of gentleness I read that and I thought that's about the best beauty secret I've ever heard better than Shiseido or Mac products that's just cosmetic see part of your beauty is your attitude isn't that right you have you seen a real pretty girl but then as soon as she opens her mouth it's like she's ugly these are ugly I see some and they open their mouths and the way they talk and the crass vulgarity of their language I think she's ugly a boy on a picture she's pretty but she ugly attitude speech the way you carry yourself it's all a part of your beauty and that's a David was a handsome man in the lasses and the Lord was what and it'd be great if someone looked at your Charles and said you hang out with Jesus a lot don't you Scott you hang out with Jesus a lot don't you Doug you hang out you and Jesus are friends I can see that so you see that that's a multi-dimensional life that he could play music he wrote songs gets in the water he has a life that's multi-dimensional and one of the things I made a big mistake on I thought it was holy if I had a one-dimensional life and you've heard people you'd see him in conferences I go to pastors conferences and Wayne I wanna introduce you to Joe Smith he's a bishop of whatever and I go hi I'm Wayne hello praise the Lord yes god bless you my son god bless you yes hallelujah hallelujah hallelujah that's like be human in Jesus name No get real and Christians can be that way please don't be that way where someone says to you man isn't as incident and a beautiful day Oh God is good god is good all the time all the time God is good god is good all the time hello be a multi-dimensional person so that people see that you're real and then when they ask you about Jesus Jesus will be real to them let's pray thanks Lord for all of your grace and helping us to understand life through mistakes through the lens of error we ask that you would help us to take these and think about them ponder them in our hearts as Mary did so that we can squeeze the nectar of wisdom out of these things and we'll be better because of it please God help us to be avid students of the things of the Spirit in Jesus name Amen god bless you
