[Music] there are these mysterious objects out there that could potentially kill those who finds them in 2001 three men accidentally came in contact with a couple of these nefarious items it was a cold December day when three Georgian villagers drove for more than 50 km or 30 Mi to collect some wood since it was a winter time it obviously was cold however when they were walking through a snowy mountainous Forest they saw almost a miracle Before Their Eyes Two strange cylindrical metal objects were seemingly melting snow around them not only the snow was melting up to a radius of approximately 1 M but the ground closer to these cylinders was steaming up these two cylinders were not even that big around 15 cm tall and 10 cm wide which is in terms of inches is 6x4 but the weight was impressive 10 kilos or 22 lb without a Tungsten plate anyway not sure what these three men were thinking but one of them tried picking up this object but quickly dropped it because it was hot uh maybe above 300 CRA or 570 F instead of running away from these devil Stones they actually decided to change their plans instead of freshing to collect firewood during the same day they decided to spend the night in the forest and resume their work in the morning at the time they believed that this was a good idea because these objects could be a nice addition to campfires heat probably to Avo themselves from call the wind they also used a huge rock as a barrier and carried these two cylinders close to it so during the night these guys warmed themselves using fire in front and cylinders behind their back not more than 4 hours had passed when these dudes felt that something was seriously wrong they felt sick and started vomiting the vomiting was intense and lasted throughout the night so they pretty much couldn't sleep and in the morning they started loading wood onto the truck did they leave these magical warm objects alone no two guys may have actually hung these cylinders on their backs for additional warmth but they felt very weak for reason and decided to call quits after loading just half of the gathered wood after driving home they went to the doctor who at first thought that these guys were just drunk but uh then after one week they started developing blisters and various rashes it became clear that something weirder was at play it turns out that these guys were in contact with extremely Radioactive radio isotop Thermo Electric Generators in human words these things can generate heat tanks to radioactive decay and the heat is needed to make electricity now why on Earth would anyone need such dangerous devices very simple to generate electricity in a remote location which has no access to accessible roads or electric grid the reason why they ended up in seemingly random forest in Georgia was that before Soviet Union collapsed Soviets were building a dam on angur River to have a solid communication so it'ss also had built radio relay that we powered by these thermoelectric generators to be honest they are quite convenient you didn't need to refuel them for a couple of decades the problem is that they may be lost or stolen these cylinders used to be encased in at least three protective layers one being tungsten second one heat isolation and final one outer radiation protection after reading about other radiological incidents I realized that some things are Often overblown by media but how do we know if information out there is right or wrong well I found an actual solution you see there is a former NASA engineer who came up with a cool different platform called Ground news before you say hey but news are often biased right yes most likely however ground news is different than other outlets why well because it collects articles from more than 50,000 sources and it doesn't care if it it's left leaning or right leaning it collects them all and makes a comparison so it allows ordinary people like you and me make our own conclusions about what's really going on in the world for example if you go to any article ground news shows where these articles are coming from what political spectrum they belong if they are biased and shows factuality rating which is in my opinion amazing because I like my news based on facts right go to ground. news/ Mr slav to give it a try if you sign up through my link you get 40% of the Vantage plan which is what I Ed to get unlimited access to all the features I highly recommend you to take a look for yourself to see a data driven way to consume your news a design flaw didn't help it either these beta M RTG reactors were secured with simple bolts which practically invited anyone with ordinary spanner set to tamper with them by the way strum 90 has a half life of 29 years so it means it's pretty powerful and Decay is fast enough to give a good amount of heat but consequently strum 90 is also highly radioactive not only that but it can enter our bodies and remain there for almost forever slowly causing bone cancer and Leukemia seriously nasty stuff some of these men who were in contact with cylinders developed burning and itching spots on their backs the very place where cylinders had been the closest one guy who was fust from the source was quickly released from hospital but other two we in a world of pain both had to endure dozens of skin grafts and one patient had it even worse his back was basically rotting away finally he died from the kardak arrest the soul it is estimated that this RTG course were emitting 4.6 seirs per hour at the surface which is terrifying since people only need to absorb five seirs to have 50/50 chance of surviving radiation poisoning by the way if this guys spent more than 4 hours close how come only one died well these 4.6 seers hit smaller area of the body which was almost touching the source for it to become deadly it should shower not only one area in the back or shoulder but the whole body of the victim and for that to happen it had to be much more powerful radiation Source or the victim had to stay near the course for a longer period of time for example the boogeyman of Chernobyl elephant's foot at its peak was giving away around 100 C per hour and was covering much bigger radius perfectly enough to radiate whole body not just shoulder or back after Georgian government learned the true nature of the three men's intoxication ation they obviously wanted to get rid of the course but at the time Georgians didn't have much experience dealing with highly ractive sources so they asked some help from International atomic energy agency before even making an attempt participants had to train for the mission [Music] [Music] International atomic energy agenc or EA EA built a special lead container which weighed impressive 5.5 tons which had enough shielding to seal radioactive Monsters Inside they placed this container on a truck and built special tools for a quick operation people who sign up for such Mission were allowed to be near the radiation sources for up to 40 seconds because as we know course were emitting almost five sews per hour kind of crazy when you think about roof workers in Chernobyl who were given 90 seconds and the roof was giving off 20,000 rangin or 200 CS per hour it is said that even in the short period of time on the roof and being somewhat protected with lead clothing some workers still received 0.5 seers as you can hear from this video there is a whistle which tells them that they have to be replaced I still can't believe the two guys that pretty much laid near these objects for more than 3 hours managed to survive anyway the road towards RTG cylinders was not easy and they also had to wait for a better weather the whole operation lasted no more than an hour and it was a complete success because none of these guys received a dangerous [Applause] dose so if these objects were actually taken care of why they still pose danger simple not all of them were found when Soviets in the 1983 wanted to connect them withon them via radio relays they produced total of eight RTG reactors these radio relays were disassembled and RTG reactors were lost however two were recovered in 1998 and another two in the 1999 and two more in the same accident that I covered today but that's only six reactors out of eight where are the rest no idea good news are that with time half lifee of strong Tu 90 this cap capsules are getting weaker and weaker even in 2001 when three Georgian guys were exposed these capsules were already 18 years old and around 40% less reactive today this number would be even lower but still incredibly dangerous these two lost rtgs are not the only lost radioactive sources many more people have been interacting with lost rtgs for example there is a lesser known but similar story which happened in Russia in 1999 when a r core was recovered at a bus station in kingp Russia radiation levels at the surface of the source were about 10 CS per hour which is even higher The Source had been stolen from a lighthouse 50 km away away also weirdly three men were involved the difference was that they were scrap thieves and all three died from radiation another RTG incident happened in 2003 also thanks to metal scrap thieves Who removed reactors from Cola lighthouses they disassembled shielding but dropped radioactive cores nearby so it is unclear what consequences they suffered it is estimated that one core at the time was blasting 1,000 Ram or 10 CS per hour from 1970s till late 1980s over 2,500 RTG reactors were deployed by Soviets to power navigational beacons lighthouses and meteorological outposts along its Arctic Coast after Soviet Union collapsed Russia had no money to maintain the hard to reach rtgs and these rectors became victims of neglect and metal thieves 16 years since Soviet Union had fallen International atomic energy agency recovered around 300 lost radioactive sources just in Georgia but there still may be more and not only in Georgia even if these RTG units are still encased in their original shielding this shielding due to constant temp changes can just randomly split open good news are that later thanks to collaboration between Western countries and Russia more than 80% of these things were properly disposed but uh 80% is not 100% so yeah you may not even need to stroll through obscure Forest to find these things because some may even be found in the walls of an apartment but more about that in this video
