12 scariest abandoned communities in America ghost towns are scary by Nature there's just something unsettling about abandoned areas that once hosted thriving communities some places like a former state capitol done in by flooding earn an island that once held a quarantine hospital take the scary nature of ghost towns to a whole new level and comprise our list of the most frightening in the United States number 12 Seattle underground when the City of Seattle Washington was first being constructed in the mid 19th century the Seattle underground was at ground level and the city's buildings were wooden then in June of 1889 the great Seattle fire destroyed thirty-one blocks rather than rebuild the city they decided to not only make buildings out of stone and brick but also regrade the streets one or two stories higher than the original grid hence creating what we know today as the Seattle underground the network of underground passageways in basements has fallen into disuse only a small portion of the area has been restored and made accessible to public tours number 11 Bodie found in California just east of the Sierra Nevada mountains near the Nevada border Bodie sprung up as a mine town following the discovery of gold in the area in 1859 within 20 years the town became one of the biggest in California was somewhere between five and seven thousand people calling the city their home starting in the 1910s the mine started closing and people had begun to move on to more prosperous strikes though permanent residents remained through most of the 1900s it's been regarded as a ghost town for more than a century today old structures remain and the ghost town as a California historic landmark hundreds of thousands visit the eerie place of history every year number 10 Animas Forks in its heyday this ghost town in Colorado was a full-fledged mining community a hotel general store saloon and post office along with 30 cabins were built by the 1880s harsh winter weather caused residents to migrate every fall to the nearby town of Silverton in 1884 a brutal Blizzard covered the town in 25 feet of snow forcing the locals to dig tunnels to get from building to building despite all this the residents persisted until mining profits began to decline in the early 1900's by the 1920s Animas Forks had become what it remains to be today a full-fledged ghost town number nine Kennecott amongst the frigid inhospitable Alaskan frontier lies an abandoned mining camp full of buildings that are essential in 1901 before there were any human traces in the area prospectors discovered what was described at the time as the richest concentration of copper in the known world mines in a railway were built and by 1911 ship sabore were being carried out of kennecott on trains 1916 was the peak of production and copper mines produced or valued at more than 32 million dollars finally by the 1930s the copper ore had dried up causing all the mines to close by 1938 from 1939 to 1952 a loan family of three remained in Kennecott as Watchmen though the village would never be repopulated it became a popular tourist site in the 1980s and guided tours are available of the various abandoned buildings number eight Burnsville Centralia has become infamous as the town that was abandoned due to an underground mine fire that has been burning since at least May of 1962 but hey don't forget about nearby Burnsville because we can't ignore the irony found in a town named Burnsville that was abandoned because of an underground fire located near San Xiaoyu the town and its fate were similar the residents were forced to leave because of all the smoke in the air according to a website dedicated to the former town Burnsville calm the last of the homes were unceremoniously torn down in 1996 leaving nothing but a barren smoke-filled patch of land number seven Glen Rio straddling the Texas New Mexico border Glen Rio formerly Rock Island is a ghost town that sits on route 66 it's notable for its characteristic Adobe structures which were made in the early 1900's there were never many people who lived in the town but there were some who made a living off of tourists in 1938 Hollywood invaded Glen Rio for three weeks when The Grapes of Wrath was filmed in the town most of the businesses eventually sought more people elsewhere and by 1985 only two people in a post office remained today everyone is long gone and the town is a largely forgotten piece of history number six Dudley town back in the infancy of our country Dudley town was a small settlement in Cornwall Connecticut the Dudley family owned the land but never turned the area into an official town for decades they allowed others to settle on their plot unfortunately for those trying to forge a life in the settlement the land wasn't very good for farming and it was alternately abandoned sometime in the 19th century trees had their way with the land for centuries and starting in the 1980s rumors of ghost activities began this led to increased vandalism as a result the owners closed the land to the public and today remains private property number five North Brother Island urban explorers and history Bluffs alike are drawn to New York's North Brother Island a 13 acre stretch of land that was once home to Riverside Oh quarantine hospital the medical facility operated from 1885 until 1963 during which time it famously housed typhoid mary after its closure the hospital's left totally abandoned with no one there to keep things tidy nature has had her way with the building trees and roots run rampant in and around the structure creating a fascinating sight for those brave enough to traverse the desolate island number four Thurmond this town in West Virginia which is almost completely vacant has become a relic of the past today much of it is owned by the National Park Service but it still looks the way it did when it was a booming coal town in the 1920s though it's mostly a ghost town there are at last count five people still living within its borders in 2006 during city elections six of Thurman's seven residents sought election number three South Pass City Wyoming in the mid-1800s south pass city was used as a stage in telegraph station along the Oregon Trail gold was discovered in the vicinity in 1866 and by 1870 the town was filled with thousands of prospectors everyone hoped that large deposits of gold lay further under the earth but none were found and by the mid 1870s the population was down to around a hundred people a few families continued to forge a living in South Pass City but these pioneers finally moved out in 1949 by the end of the 20th century many of the town's homes were in a state of disrepair until finally being restored as a historic site for tourists number to Cahaba Cahaba established itself in the history of alabama and the united states by becoming the first permanent state capitol in 1820 it's low elevation and location at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba rivers meant that the village was subject to seasonal flooding consequently the capital was moved to Tuscaloosa in January 1826 Cahaba would remain an important town and become a major distribution point for cotton during the Civil War the Confederacy seized cajas railroad and turned a large cotton warehouse into a prison where roughly 3,000 Union soldiers were held floods persisted throughout the town's history and by the turn of the 20th century most of its buildings and people had been relocated it became the subject and setting of many ghost stories today Cahaba is a fascinating historical site where visitors can still see old streets cemeteries and government buildings of always wants the State Capitol hey friends hope you're briefly served as the capital of the Montana territory in 1864 it persisted as a mining town though its population dwindled steadily until the last residents left in the 1970s today Bannock remains a very well-preserved ghost town with buildings like the Methodist Church and hotel meet looking as though they could be put into full use at a moment's notice
