Exploring an Abandoned Chinese Ghost City

[Music] [Laughter] [Applause] [Music] in today's episode were in China to explore the single-largest abandoned location we've ever seen the shyamu international project the development spans over 1,800 acres and is comprised of a residential district at an entertainment district the entertainment district which was set to contain a theme park water park hotels shops and restaurants will be the focus of our exploration in 2014 the project was derailed when the head developer was taken away to be investigated for corruption with over 1.4 billion u.s. dollars in debt and no leader at the helm the development was seized by local authorities thousands of people who had paid up front for their residential units were now left in limbo not much has changed since then and the structures are dwarfed by our surroundings but at this point we still had no idea of the true scale of the entire complex so there's probably more workers here I can't imagine the research one guy working on a place this size like there's so many other yeah yeah I don't know this building already seems pretty crooked a lot of cigarettes up here people probably come up here to hang out it's pretty tall all of these buildings are part of this complex it's really huge you can see all these bridges that connected it to the main road most food parking complex underneath looks like a ghost town out there wonder what that one worker was doing all the way over there alone oh wait there's people looks like they're gonna install these big windows here clockface it looks like I saw a person in black black pants and jacket walking around down there that's probably the security really I'd even look down it is this a clock hand yeah like we just went up so many steps but look how high that building is out there [Music] [Applause] damn yeah I feel like our chances of bumping into security here have to be pretty low this place is insanely huge let's see what this white open area is over there yeah this part seems like essentially a giant parking garage it looks like it goes down a lot further though we're already one floor underground so they excavator the ton to build this [Applause] [Music] holy [ __ ] I feel like we need a person down there for scale [Music] there's a lot of tire trucks down there I wonder if those are still there from instruction or security drives around in here it's already looking kind of unstable in some areas [Music] [Music] look how many sets of stairs one two three four and then over there there's another four eight flights of stairs just right here let's go down a floor and get a view of this area that we got a Pico before there's the construction elevator this floor is oddly shallow basically hitting my head on this right here Wow I think this is street level up here these stairs are very dark yeah she just tried to knock it out sure it's gonna be a long way up yeah it's like twice the height of the other Tower but I think would be worth it for the shot this place is so massive the only way to see the whole thing is to go up this high I think the building we're about to go up is essentially a clone of that one 14 15 16 17 I'd say they've about 20 floors to go up that's doable yeah back into the dark depths of the stairwell the problem still makes asbestos into all their building materials here these are all the decorative pieces it's gone the outside of the building yeah a bunch of plaster molds there's a person you see the person ECM this is a person in black they're walking this directions get away from the edge he had like a pole or a bar in his hand no no hmm yeah they're coming right towards us let's go to the top it's the only way up we're on top of like the maintenance area yeah this is pretty sketchy I don't know if I want to do that you came all this way I might just hang out off one of these edges it's like the same view and fly the drone out the window yeah why not it won't acquire GPS in here yeah well I think you need to go to the top I don't think so you can try climb that and try to stay low in cases people are still out there I don't see them well I actually hear the soldiers chanting over there should be a [Music] [Music] damn I just heard it but there's another abandoned tower over there like surrounded by that a lot of halted development in the city all right we're gonna head back down now because once again as it always seems in China we are rushed for time it looks like there you see are wrong there and then it fell out or something so that's a little sketchy yeah it's crazy that they have a building with this style design like a rocky finish right next to this tower and this very european-style building it's just such a contrast it's like a Flintstones hotel or something you have a river that would go around the whole place probably give you gondola rides in it like a Vegas mall we saw some people walking out in the open on ground level no I don't think they're security yes people wandering around yeah this hole is how the haze in here Wow and I really see the smoke inside the building that's pretty crazy [Music] we decided to head down into the main atrium and it was only now that we would comprehend the monumental size of the building we had been exploring [Music] [Music] [Music] [Music] well what they even fill this space with like this is parking all these levels here I mean I'm not even sure that it's all parking maybe some of the sensory level now I don't know why a parking garage would have such a big open glass area like that so I don't know what they would have used this floor maybe they were planning to put a theme park in here yeah and they would have the tall rides where the really big glass ceilings are that it could have in it this seems like the most logical a theme park yeah small is definitely big enough the skill is just off the charts it is not two things yet I feel like a lot of people might not find this place that interesting because it's so empty but for me I just love the surreal feel of places like this I don't think there's anywhere else on earth quite like this [Music] you know if I saw a place this huge in a movie or something I would have figured they use CGI to make it look this crazy but now the place this massive really does exist this area has a lot cooler overgrowth it's like a stage thing in the middle it's drone time a lot of mosquitoes in this part there's people out there are you gonna fly it what the kids yeah they're just little kids while they're all watching holy cow so on a bike coming tonight be security stairs right here oh wait they don't go all the way down let's find some stairs to go up Wow let's go up a couple of floors well it's China what do you expect there's there's dogs and security without fail 100% of the time should we try to get another shot from this level yeah unless they come up the stairs they're right below us we found their flaw stairs come on he's gonna Messer though no we don't we can cross over on this floor I think the guy's just trying to annoy us with the dogs until we leave let's keep going up then we're like putting more space between us in them yeah and maybe they'll stop trying if we get high enough up there's actually water we came out here it's like a lot of the malls animation themed for them they completely changed up the themes [Applause] [Applause] it's crazy how far underground it goes 1 2 3 4 5 floors but some of those are twice the size of a normal floor time to cross the Venetian bridge that's right this is a real Venetian bridge they tore it down stone by stone from Venice and rebuilt it right here in China it's really steep bridge Allah yeah I don't know if people would have been allowed to walk up here yeah it might have been decorative so it looks a lot better from the outside in the inside well even across the street is abandoned yeah there's no active building as a visible city is built on top of this place on fast because this active building has the underground structure and then right under it it has the underground structure that's crazy there's an active street running it through the middle of it wow there's actually escalators installed over there this this open area seems more like a conventional mall and these would be the stores here it's not wide open like the other part there's not even steps on the escalators yet just there are steps there are steps there just no railing okay feels like every exploration in China either ends with us running out of flight because we spent a whole day traveling or getting kicked out by security okay let's at least pop into that one big building over there yeah I don't know if it's Russian it kind of looks like no rats but it costs Austin should be like a cathedral style Basilica looking Berlin looking Cathedral yeah no that's the Roman style Chapel one okay that's the Russian ones that's crazy how much of this place we still didn't even see it's like a biggest single complex of anything Irish I'm accomplice it's a single building it's structured as different buildings yeah but on the bottom floors it's all connected as a swimming this is one building yeah this has to be some sort of world record if they actually finished it is there anything like this in China that actually opened I'm kind of curious what that would look like holy [ __ ] check that out it's an upside-down car right there what the hell see this the one we saw earlier down there but this one just upside down it looks pretty scrapped there's no motor in it the sheer magnitude is just mind-blowing and do you see those towers over there yeah they're part of the same building I know we could have walked through three of them out of there and then two on the other side they go under an active Street yeah we could tunnel underneath active industry nuts what's crazy I just remember this there's one construction worker actually working on [ __ ] yeah maybe that's how they have these [ __ ] is it still no I can't leave it abandons thing you technically do work on it to not get fined so you put some plaster that's a good theory that might be it oh yeah we've got about 10 minutes I guess to pop it in here well these concrete stairs are self-supporting the whole way that's cool it's kind of hoping one of these blinds would be a giant open hall they're all divided up into floors which makes it a little less coolest an inside ocean it could look cool up in those domes but it's gonna be pitch black by the time we get up there [Music] soon the Sun was dipping below the horizon and the light from the city combined with the smog to create an endless dusk we could have spent another several hours photographing the site in this unnatural lighting but unfortunately we had a train to catch if it weren't for this video footage I think I would have remembered the entire experiences a dream rather than reality and I think that's one of the main reasons why we enjoy abandoned spaces so much when exploring in places like this you feel a complete disconnect from a stress and monotony of day-to-day life it's like your reality back home doesn't even I spent some time in Shanghai and a friend had told me that construction crews don’t get paid until the projects get completed, so buildings are made lightening fast and often their quality can be overlooked in the process if the contracts are not for a major metropolitan area.
