hey everybody it's way and today we're having a little bit of just just a quick video so it came out recently that duckduckgo was not being as transparent as uh they should they i still think they're a pretty good search engine even if you're privacy focused it's still better than google in my opinion uh it's just that they've had a deal with microsoft um to my knowledge the this is all to my knowledge is that to keep bing's results because duckduckgo takes things from multiple different spots they had to not block microsoft trackers but anyway a lot of people have kind of lost their trust in it i've lost it a bit i still use it here and there still use it on my phone sometimes but anyway we have four alternatives three technically but four um if you're looking to switch from duckduckgo and the one i i'm gonna start with the one i actually like recommend the most like recommend for most people would be quant um and the main thing with quant is just it's polished it's very very polished um like kind of experience um as you can see it actually had a complete rehaul um overhaul on like how it looked um it used to look very similar to google like a little bit too similar down to like the colorful like q versus g and everything but uh it's it's a lot more of its own right now but uh it's it's kind of like a suite as well like from what i understand they're trying to build up like their own kind of kind of suite so as you can see they have search that's what we're on right now they're starting a map service which i think they started in 2019 sometime and they have quant junior as well which is like i believe it has like an adult filter and uh all of that so anyway it's based in france um yeah there it is made in france um but uh yeah let's let's let's read some of this all right efficient and trace free 90 of users satisfied your personal data is your business surf on the quant search engine in complete confidentiality zero tracking of your searches zero advertising tracking and zero sale of your personal data you know of course you can't trust anything 100 um but these are the best things that i could find being informed should not turn you into a click machine turning our users into click machines goes against our ethics that's why at quad we don't track advertising or analyze your personal data quant puts aside the algorithms that pre-format the web and turn you into a commodity here no trackers or advertising cookies have you noticed there's no advertising cookie or banner on quant does that surprise you we think that's normal we do not sell your data it belongs to you um i do actually like that those are like spying aside they're just annoying like the like oh you are cookies you are uh to help you um would you like to accept them uh it's getting a bit better considering you can turn them off now um well some of them off there's like one that you usually can't which says something like strictly necessary or something but anyway but why is there advertising on quant simply to finance our model as a european search engine that does not track or store your data and intends to remain free in short contextual ads are the same for everyone we don't track you while you search so essentially i'll take what you searched for that search and we'll advertise that for that one search and then it'll it'll it won't like carry over goes further brows protected on all websites by installing quant vip vi privacy which i actually do have installed um so it essentially i i think it it's a little bit unnecessary um i have it installed but if you're using something like firefox like i am you're gonna have something like this anyway um i believe a lot of chrome based browsers have this as well like if you're using brave i'm pretty sure it does this too um but yeah so it'll block certain things but anyway that's quant so it's very much a complete package i believe they're trying to compete with google as as a suite as well so not just as a search engine uh but anyway actually do they have themes i never like actually checked they'll turn contact oh no i'm a freak let's let's let's get that get that uh get that out of here um no no themes display oh wait dark uh okay well uh that didn't really change anything i don't know what light theme is but anyway um so just to show you we'll we'll do a quick uh quick little search so i've been going to do a video on sonic frontiers so uh oops sonic frontiers so you know it's a very familiar layout once you've searched something so you get like videos you get um you know you get uh watching who's it's got links to stuff and and all that so and you get the wikipedia stuff at the side so it's very familiar very you can uh change like what region you uh you're in to get things maybe more based on where you live there's a freshness which um i'm guessing is just the age of when it when it went up so we're gonna go into like images um i sure hope that i don't get something inappropriate because i turned off the thing yeah no we're good we're good yeah so you get this you can view it very very similar to how google does it where it comes up on the on the right um get the videos tab not going to go into maps just in case that shows something got a news tab you got i think the only things that are really missing are like a shopping tab from google but then again i haven't used google in a long time so i don't know what uh it might be missing i also didn't notice that they had a music tab let me actually oh oh oh this is more like what um quant used to look like okay they obviously haven't updated this part of quant yet and it's all in french i think yeah anyway anyway that's quant um if you're turned off by how kind of busy this is because i i'll admit this is like a very kind of busy page there's quant light oh i forgot to reset that is quant light oh jeez i didn't realize that it changes color does it does it all oh that's cool so every time you load the page you get a different like kind of color that's cool anyway this is a lot more just just a search engine that's it like no bells no whistles kind of stuff so sonic frontiers you know very very plain you don't even get the little wikipedia thing um you still get the tabs you still get the tabs but it's very bare bones you don't even get like a sort buy option it doesn't look like yeah you don't really do it and it has a dark theme uh how does that look yeah that's that's that's a bit nicer anyway um so that's that's pretty much all quant really has to offer um that i'm going to be showing in this video um going into i guess if you're a bit more serious you you you're get more of a weary person this metager it's an open source one again can't trust things 100 because this this needs to be hosted somewhere right um and uh you know whether it's open source or not you know it's it's being hosted on somewhere that isn't your computer so you can't be 100 sure but anyway um and i'm not sure if quant is open source i don't think it is but i might be wrong on that uh but metager is a german-based uh one so um and i think they've got kind of more of an environmental angle too so let's see guaranteed privacy by using metagera you retain full control over your data our anonymizing proxy keeps you protected when you continue surfing we don't track oh and i should i should uh i should specify this isn't technically a search engine this is a search aggregator so this takes things from like a bunch of different sources i think quant might do that too i think a lot of these kind of like privacy-focused ones are more aggregators so they they take things from other search engines but anyway run by a non-profit organization metager is developed and run by our non-profit organization suma eve associate suma ev association for free access to knowledge strengthen us by becoming a member or by donating to summa ev members search ad free so you know you can donate to them diverse and free manager protects against censorship by combining the results of multiple search engines very nice our algorithms are transparent and available for everyone to read our source code is free yes so you can go i'm imagining this is a github page yep oh it's a get lab page excuse me ah here it is 100 renewable energy sustainability and efficient use of resources are important to us all of our services are run using renewable energy from the server to the coffee machine very nice if true again i'm a bit of a skeptic so sorry if uh sorry if i'm being cynical i do recommend these but i i just like to be a little bit skeptical so it's got a um it's got an extension like just like quant does um metager i did not know it had an app but apparently it does um so you can get it on your phone too um so let's go sonic frontiers and as you can see see they have like baibing by being by scopia by bing skopia info in footage never heard of that one scopia so it seems like most of these are either from scope urabing um so it's it's a little bit rough it's very it feels a bit more early internet to me like not early early but like maybe late or like early 2010s internet it's very like kind of like like no no kind of kind of um thing but yeah you get your links um and you can go to pictures it's got less tabs um one thing that is a bit annoying is that if you want to enlarge the image instead of just enlarging it it'll take you to where the thing is um so that's a little bit annoying that's something i don't really like about metager um i didn't realize that oh well no shop no sonic frontiers available today um news politics i'm guessing that's yeah just just the news thing so but yeah overall not bad i think i think this is a better option if you want just a no kind of thing it's got a little bit more than this does i think because you can you can control like your settings and are um oh you can even change change which search engines you want i don't know that you can blacklist certain things i didn't know that huh learn something new every day but uh you can have a filter um so uh it's not that in depth but it's a little bit more than this does um but anyway we're moving on to circs or x um most people call it xerx and yeah here's here's um this this looks a bit confusing right so this is circs.space and the thing about xerx is that it's completely open source you can host it yourself if you want to if you're if you're like a paranoid um and you you don't want any anything like to to to go out you can um i mean stuff's still gonna go out um it's the internet after all um but you can host this on your own machine if you want to i'm not gonna show you how to because that's outside of the scope of this but you can go to the circs.space website and there's all these instances run by volunteers to [Music] uh you know um to have their own instance of circs and all of these will differ slightly so what version they're using um what encryption service they're using so this one's using google trust this one's using let's encrypt um bypass let's encrypt most of them are let's encrypt but um it's got a network um which country it's based in whether they support ipv6 um they've got like all this other info but generally you can just go into the first one and be all right so okay so uh this is a belgium one apparently um all these are pretty much the same but i'll open up a few just to show you what i mean by they they differ slightly so this is the one we opened then there's this one they this this one starts with a dark theme it's a little bit more polished than this one this one's got that kind of like old lion box this one's got its uh nice rounded and oh and this one's different even more it's got a rounded square a lot of them i noticed changed the logo but i haven't seen that happen um let's see if we can uh we can find one with uh with the changed logo because those those are always kind of fun oh okay oh okay this this one i think is the closest to the vanilla like cyrix uh web page this is i think what you will get if you host it yourself and don't change any of the settings um but uh anyway uh since this is the closest to the base one i'm gonna try and use this so sonic for tears and again this is a search aggregator this isn't a search engine um oh okay this one uh this one might be no good yeah that's the thing okay so all these are hosted by volunteers so the thing is you're putting your trust in these individual people or like groups of people rather than a company whether that is better or worse is up to you um i personally think it's better but you know it's it's it's up to you um okay so i guess we'll use this one sonic fronties oops sonic fronties all right this one looks a little bit better um okay so this one for some reason it doesn't have a lot of results on one page um but anyway ooh this one's got a lot of this one even has like onion sites if you're using tor um which is kind of interesting but yeah so you get your links actually wait no and and and you get your um go back please please you get your uh wikipedia page to the to the right but yeah if you go to images um same sort of thing you get your images it does open them very google-esque so it opens up it enlarges it to the right of you uh so oh this one took it from quant so that's interesting um let's see what paul go if this is any different because you shouldn't differ too much in what you get from them it shouldn't matter too much okay so this one has a bit of a longer page this this whoever's running this has uh has kind of extended how many things can exist on a page but um [Music] oh and this uh the settings just oh no no they're the right ones yeah but anyway uh yeah so these should be generally the same okay so this one opens oh yeah so again these are run by volunteers they might not always work oh there we go okay so it does open up the same way well anyway so those are generally the engines i would recommend for uh anyone if if you're looking to get off duckduckgo um or google or google um and uh yeah in terms of how i would rank these if you're looking for a ranking um i would put quant at the top just because it's the most complete um though i i would say this is probably the one that requires the most trust because again i'm i can't find anything about the source code here um yeah so i i don't know if quant is is open source or not so i think it i think it uh it requires a bit more trust if you want to use this one but it's the most complete package it's what i use a lot of the time um quant lite um i think is just a bit too bare bones not having like the options to sort or filter is a little bit lacking i think that could have been there and this would have easily been like really good but uh metager um i would say yeah so i would recommend quant first manager and then circs um well circs if you're using the public instances um as third if you're using it if if you're gonna follow the guide and set up your own then i would highly recommend it i i used to um host my own and yeah it worked very well um it was really fast um i always kind of got what i wanted um it was it was a very good experience so uh that's that's pretty much it i hope you enjoyed um i don't know how much of this privacy privacy-focused stuff i'm gonna be doing yes i know shut up sorry um but uh yeah i don't know how much of this privacy stuff i'm gonna do it's not really one i want this channel to be about but i'll i'll probably post stuff like this here and there but uh thanks for watching hope you enjoyed and um see you next time see ya
