orphaned sold into slavery and brought to england as a diplomatic gift sarah forbes bernetta captured queen victoria's heart and became her protege her portrait unveiled at victoria's seaside osborne house as english heritage begins highlighting black historical figures who've been overlooked people are really uh surprised by her story particularly because she had a close relationship with the queen and it's something that they should have known about and they're so surprised to see a black woman of her grandeur in such a dress sarah's story was featured in the tv drama victoria showing how the little girl originally named aina found herself growing up in royal circles with the queen funding her education i want you to know that you are welcome here [Music] and you will be quite safe sarah excelled in literature art and music her marriage was quite the society affair and she named her own daughter victoria it's a very good portrait sarah's great great grandson was told the story by his grandma but thought it wasn't real until he made his own inquiries years later we didn't believe her we just thought it was an old lady rambling on about something so i wrote to the archives at windsor castle and i got a letter saying yes it is true i wish it was told all year round not just because of black history month because people in this country have to know that black people have been here not just arriving on the wind rush but they've been here for many many many years before then sarah died young in her thirties and for a while her story was lost even to her own family now it's being retold and brought to a new wider audience peter lane 5 news
