>> THANK YOU VERY MUCH. >>> OUR OTHER TOP STORY, FOR THE SECOND TIME THIS YEAR, A CONFRONTATION OVER SHOPLIFTING ENDED UP WITH A PERSON BEING SHOT AT A BAY AREA HOME DEPOT. >> THIS LATEST TIME IT HAPPENED LAST NIGHT AT THE HOME DEPOT IN SAN CARLOS. NBC AREA'S MARIANNE FAVRO HAS THE LATEST. >> Reporter: THE SHOOTING HAPPENED HERE AT THE FRONT ENTRANCE AROUND 10:00 LAST NIGHT, JUST AS THE STORE WAS CLOSING. SAN MATEO COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES SAY WHEN A SECURITY GUARD CONFRONTED A SUSPECTED SHOPLIFTER, THE SUSPECT GRABBED THE GUARD'S BATON. >> AT SOME POINT DURING THE FIGHT, THE SUSPECT WAS ABLE TO DISARM THE SECURITY GUARD OF HIS BATON. THE SUSPECT THEN STRUCK THE SECURITY GUARD IN THE FACE AND HEAD AREA WITH THE BATON. THE SECURITY GUARD THEN DISCHARGED HIS FIREARM, SHOOTING TWO ROUNDS. ONE STRUCK THE SUSPECT. >> Reporter: THAT SUSPECT, 26-YEAR-OLD JONATHAN MACKAY OF SAN CARLOS, WAS TREATED AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL AND IS NOW IN JAIL ACCUSED OF ASSAULT WITH A DEADLY WEAPON AND ROBBERY. TODAY, CUSTOMERS AT THE BUSY HOME DEPOT STORE REACTED TO THE SHOOTING. >> IT'S UNFORTUNATE, BUT NOWADAYS, IF YOU STOP SOMEBODY WHO'S STEALING, YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL OF YOURSELF, OF YOUR WELL-BEING. EVEN IF YOU HELP PEOPLE. SOMEONE JUST CAN PULL OUT A GUN AND SHOOT YOU. >> IT'S CRAZY RIGHT NOW. YOU HEAR OF SHOOTINGS EVERYWHERE. >> Reporter: IN APRIL, SECURITY GUARD BLAKE MOHS WAS SHOT AND KILLED AFTER CONFRONTING AN ALLEGED SHOPLIFTER AT A PLEASANTON HOME DEPOT. THAT SUSPECT IS AWAITING TRIAL ON MURDER CHARGES. IN SAN CARLOS, DEPUTIES SAY SHOP LIFTING HAS BEEN A GROWING ISSUE. >> HOME DEPOT FELT IT NECESSARY TO HIRE A SECURITY GUARD WHO IS ARMED. >> Reporter: WE REACHED OUT TO HOME DEPOT, WHO REFERRED US BACK TO LAW ENFORCEMENT. CUSTOMERS WE SPOKE WITH TODAY SAID THEY'RE LIKELY TO BE MUCH MORE AWARE OF THEIR SURROUNDINGS WHILE SHOPPING AT THE STORE NOW. FORTUNATELY, THERE WAS A SHERIFF'S DEPUTY IN THE PARKING LOT LAST NIGHT WHO QUICKLY INTERVENED, ARRESTING THE SUSPECT AND PROVIDING FIRST AID.
