I have a 4 year old Galaxy S8 with no issues. Given how serious of an issue this is I'm surprised it didn't blow up earlier
Just checked my old phone drawer after watching this. My old s4 and s6 both puffed up and broke out the backs. Just took them to a phone repair shop to get the batteries removed. Yikes.
It's possible that the problem only occurs if the phone is actually not used at all for a very long period and allowed to fully discharge (which is not a good thing for LiPo batteries).
Not saying it is correct that it happens, just that this would explain why it's happenning to people in this very special situation of having tons of phones which they reviewed once and then not used at all since, whilst not being spotted in the wild amongst current users even though there are plenty of smartphones being used for many years until they die (much longer than the mere 5 years of age of some of this guy's phones whose batteries had blowed up) in countries with lower incomes than Britain or the US were even a basic Samsung smartphone costs quite a lot more than a month's average wage.
It would make sense that from an engineering point of view the battery had been designed to operate correctly for phones in current use whilst not for phone not under use for many years, although I suspect that if it was done that way those phones are probably not in fact compliant with at the rules for such devices in the EU as they're not supposed to stop working if not being used.
*nervously looks over at my old s6 edge sitting 2 feet from me on the desk*
lol... my note 9 just suddenly started showing washed out colors and I come across this..
Again?
Samsung phones also score among the lowest in reparability. Truly evil company.
I had it happen to about half of my office's Dell laptops
oh shit .. i have a storage bin with several old samsung phones in... 1 that i ran over , couple others that i just upgraded .... guess i need to pull them out and dispose
