[Music] [Music] [Music] do [Music] today we're at douglas and salmon run it's in pulaski new york um it's the lower section of the salmon river it's the first spot you can fish for the salmon in the river um this is the freshest place to find the freshest fish steelhead brown trout coho salmon king salmon um when they migrate up to salmon river every fall this is the first place people come to actually target them it's an unbelievable place groomed trails you don't see litter people respectful just an amazing place to fish and enjoy the outdoor sport of fishing um and the fishing has been amazing nothing but amazing today that one here on a posse fireball we're using a bait button with the fireball just to keep it on there a little bit better sometimes the fireball does pop off of there once you know you hook up but you'll see when we get them in here you'll see the bait button a lot of power in these fish right now so we're fishing down here in the douglas and salmon run today uh nice overcast dark morning here and uh the fish are moving pretty good here uh nice pot of kings in front of us low water conditions here but that's part of the reason we came down here oh he's taking off downstream and first rain in months imagine that the guy from california brings new york rain [Music] you guys walking all the way down to troy or what here's common case you can't beat it here's a chinook salmon out of the salmon river in upstate new york uh you can see the hooks right in their mouth there uh the vape the bait button's still on there we're using fireballs down here uh fishing down the douglas and salmon run today oh she's still real feisty let's get her unhooked and let her continue upstream to let her go spawn so one of the things i was using today for my success was using a potski fireball chinook colored so all i'm doing is i'm it's on a gamma gatsu c14s number four hook i'm hooking it through here now one of the things that i actually learned from a fellow potsky pro staffer is to utilize this bait button so this bait button what it does is it's a small rubber disc that holds your fireball in place on the hook now it doesn't slide down to the barb and block the hook from hooking the fish when they bite the fireball so now this is on there until you get one now obviously it's a rubber bait on a small hook and it will tear off when you know throughout the course of the day that's all part of fishing you know when you get one they do fall off but the success that we have with this today man i'm a believer in fireballs and i've always been a believer in fireballs but the bait button makes it so much easier to use we're here at douglaston salmon run using atlas mike's pink bags with potsky natural row this is the premium right here these kings are chomping it what a tank stevo what a tank big fresh fish out of the lake late season here low water fish are steadily coming in constantly i was just down at the lake they're still jumping in the estuary and down near the lake these fish are full of energy look at them you can't even hold them steve always leaving stadium oh here we go again same exact spot oh he's deadly with that now he don't man tell stevo does it gotta have a good net man good bait good netting good net man success holy doesn't get much fresher in this douglas and salmon run big king salmon potsky eggs atlas mike's netting fresher than fresh we've been using eggs these are potsky premium trout eggs tied in atlas mike's netting three by three squares with miracle thread i try to keep them about the size of a nickel sometimes bigger sometimes smaller depending on the water conditions today's real clear so one thing we've added to it today is atlas mike's gel scent anise scent can never hurt uh especially when fishing for these fish it's instinct it can't hurt to have an extra smell in the water for these fish to hit today's been an incredible day we've had steelhead um we've lost a few steelhead the amount of kings we've had to hand today has been unbelievable um and we've been here maybe three hours it's double digit day and uh if you want to get on these fish posse eggs premium eggs love the one you're with love the salmon love potsky eggs love atlas mike's netting love your net guy he's an important guy you know look at him he just destroyed this egg sack white mesh switched it up it was pink the pink pink earlier now they're on white it's good to put a different color through the through the run every every couple tasks so don't get used some days they key on one collar but other days they want something different and today it's uh it's been pink but this second cast was white on like donkey kong all america watch this watch this you can't you can't learn that look at that oh look at that they don't teach that in school boys that right there experience look at savage big or small they're still fun to catch this guy uh he's a little weird shaped one he uh he's an adult for sure but what a blast to catch he was hungry you can see he's still chomping there's no other place you can come catch fish this size and quantity as you do here um you want to catch a trophy brown trout a trophy king salmon trophy coho atlantic salmon uh even trophy smallmouth bassman caught in here it's uh it's a mecca for for just giant fish and we're lucky to have it right here in our backyards so every year the salmon run can start as early as mid august it really depends on water flow um if we get a lot of rain which this year we haven't had a lot of rain but if we get a lot of rain some salmon will trickle in sometimes even as early as late july but once we see these fish start coming in um they'll stage out in front with the charter boats you find them out in front and little by little you hear about oh we got one and another one and next thing you know the run is full blown and fisher from top to bottom from right here in the village of pulaski all the way up to altmar where the hatchery is and they'll go from august right on through october end of october probably start fizzling out but you'll still see some co-host and the steelhead start coming in end of october november and even december once in a while we see some fresh kings still come in uh you know not everyone's clock's the same some run a little late and we see it every year some from fresh kings i can't even i can't even put the gopro down long enough to wait for them to get another bite it's constant does it steal it yeah she's coming right out oh yeah look at that hello funny things like that hope our neck guy's here today boys oh he always showed look wow put your sunglasses on you don't want to hurt your retinas guys that one's chrome look at that fish he's hot i'll go to the bank here where else can you find him like that stevo trout eggs you know what this is just a bycatch when you're fishing salmon with trout eggs doesn't hurt to catch a beautiful steelhead like this all right let's not let this one swim to syracuse come on buddy big old buck huh there's a whole mix of fish down here there's bright fish there's some spawning fish around and that's why the trout has started to move in a few browns and steelhead around and uh we're picking off these kings as they go by beautiful beautiful fish down here today most your salmon are going to run 15 to 20 pounds i think is a fair fair size um we have seen some upwards of 30 pounds this year um i think this year there's there's been a little bit bigger quality of fish but on the average it's 15 to 20 pounds for a king salmon probably i'd say 7 to 10 for a coho and steelhead are probably six to eight pounds so we haven't had much rain um there's two reservoirs that feed this the upper reservoir salmon reservoir and the lower salmon reservoir i was just up at the upper reservoir not that long ago and it's down probably 10 feet 12 feet which is concerning because that's what feeds the salmon river for flow and most of these fish that are coming in this river are delayed this year because we haven't had a flow you know the third biological clock says it's time to go spawn so they're still coming but most years we have a higher flow this year the flow right now is about 185 cfs which is considerably low i would say on the average most years it's 335 this time of the year to 500 um but it isn't stopping them from coming and people having a great time we're on again here this is a really nice one here is it a salmon yep it's a nice big chinook look like a big female [Applause] did that rod just break oh my god is that a lamy no oh my god folks there is the rod right here we're going to try to land this with the rod oh no blooper of the year got him steven's already on who's got the steelhead both big kings huh all right you get that one are you coming over here there's one in the net i was trying to look for the double this fish wants to go upstream uh-oh he's not waiting for the net he handed it the legend the legend the salmon went in shallow water you can't help him no net you get it yourself can't beat it big fresh kings douglas and salmon run salmon river new york blast guy they are fresh they are mean and they are coming and they are on the chew today's episode of potsky outdoors comes to you from upstate new york we're roughly 35 minutes or an hour north of syracuse depending on where you are on the world famous salmon river now this place is world famous because it has one of the largest salmon runs in north america it was designed that way the new york dec does a heck of a job at stocking 300 000 chinook and 80 000 coho in this system they go out to lake ontario they come back and they provide one of the greatest sport fishing operations in all of north america if you've never been here before imagine oh 12 miles of public access out of the 17 mile long river that stems from lighthouse hill reservoir down to lake ontario and of those 12 miles it is wall-to-wall people and i'm talking wall-to-wall for almost 12 miles it is that popular you have people that fly up here they bike up here they drive up here from neighboring states from all over the eastern united states and from everywhere all over new york this is no secret what's interesting is so many people complain potsky you guys are spot burning like crazy this isn't spot burning this isn't one of the most well-known places in north america that's almost like saying hey you're spot burning that they tailgate at giant stadium pre-coveted okay this is some place that everybody knows about it's no secret the state wants it to be that way why because it's a tourist dream for the local economies the town of pulaski and every place nearby they live and die by how many salmon come back to this river now this was actually the first time we've ever filmed for salmon on the same river you guys have seen us up here for almost 15 years doing steelhead never have we got in a boat during salmon fishing you know we've asked our old friend troy creasy guy's been around as long as i've been alive hey troy can you take us on the salmon river chris good luck my dates are booked two years in advance i don't care if you're the president united states troy said you can't come out here with us we're that booked this is one of the most popular places to fish in all of the united states now we tried to come out here in 2018 2018 i got up here getting ready to go to syracuse football game of the weekend my good friend andy bliss at chase and tail adventurer says chris come back another time the fish were already gone that was the middle of october last year we were here and it was 86 degrees the day that we were up here we had two days in a row booked and it was so hot salmon didn't want to bite matter of fact they stayed in the lake there wasn't many fish around this year we hit it perfectly and after 15 years i would say we finally deserve to get up here remember we had to fly in here so it's not like they can call me and say hey come on here tomorrow you know coming in from the west coast and we're basically coming out here to enjoy just a phenomenally managed fishery now everybody knows that this fall has been interesting everybody can say chris you're from california you brought the rain today was the first day it's rained all fall didn't rain enough to lift the poor water levels that are here but you know what everybody enjoyed the rain now we came out here today and we fished the douglaston salmon run yes you're correct it is a private two mile section of water but it's one of the best decisions we've ever made now i spent all day monday driving around town and looking at the amount of three dollar fish cleaning stations that are everywhere the amount of cars that are parked all over the side of the river all over 12 miles people are fighting down at the river for a place at the hole you know people are wall to wall you know obviously their social distance six feet apart unless they're in the same family but i've never seen so many people over a 12 mile stretch and i said to the guys hey let's just book a section of the douglas and salmon run just like everybody else you know it'll give us an opportunity to at least have a little bit of space to be able to film this episode had we have gone downtown right in the heart of pulaski at the bridge and looked both directions we wouldn't have been able to find a place to stand in between other people now there were a lot of people fishing this section as well you can see from some of our drone footage here you know not any hole was left opened in this two mile section of water here but you know what we did find this section didn't have any trash it was very clean people were friendly they were nice and we had one heck of a great time fishing now all of our salmon were caught on two baits today be honest this is the first time we've ever done this you guys know we're team potsky we film a lot all over north america we called one of our friends from atlas mike's our good friend casey prisco and said hey listen i know you're an atlas mike's guy however i heard you use trout eggs he said of course i do who everybody uses trout eggs now well we said can you take us out fishing and that's what we did today half of our fish came in casey's atlas mike's spawn sac formula what is that he loves using the three by three squares and he puts potski trout eggs inside and then uses miracle thread to tie him up sure enough we caught some awesome salmon and actually a beautiful steelhead today on that and our good friend stephen chen of sts guide service he's a potsky guy he's been around with us for years he was able to come out and join us today and i said steven do me a favor so many people tell us these fireballs don't work they fall off the hook can you catch two fish just catch two fish for me show me these things work sure enough stephen grabbed his chinook egg why because it imitates chinook eggs you know put it on there he put a bait button this is new york most people don't even know what a bait button is look it up it's something that everybody uses in the west it keeps that fireball on there allows you to get a great drift we caught two really nice salmon with those as well now casey is also well aware that the number of people that fish this area is unbelievable crowds are ridiculous so he also uses not every time but when the bike gets tough he grabs atlas mike's a nice lunker gel and he puts that on his sponsox why everybody knows a niece is a real popular scent and guess what i wanted casey to use fire gel but he's an atlas mike's guy so he didn't want to do it sure enough between casey and steven we had one of the funnest days we had filming potsky outdoors in ages had a great time and if you use the techniques they did you can have a great day on the salmon river where world famous salmon are swimming by your feet every few seconds [Music] [Music] potsky products are available at sporting goods stores near you if you can't find the specific color size that you want make sure to go to
