this one about the clarity of Scripture we're gonna really dive into what a Sola scriptura right and how the impact makes a difference in our lives daily amen and it does Pastor John dizzy nice you're with us today it's a pleasure to be here and we encourage people to get something to write with because there's a lot of information coming at you absolutely absolutely and I'm telling you just done lead each and every person that listens to Jesus Christ we ask in his Holy Name Amen there's the Lord okay lesson number five then we're talking about by scripture you know Tom but it's only here or Sola scriptura and so this is what we've been taught the whole lessons all the lessons we've had so far is always pointed us back if we tried to go another direction it always brought us back to the the Word of God it's the most important thing to do and we praise God for that we're gonna go check over Sabbath you know I see a lot of good things our memory text and then Sabbath's lesson you don't want to just go over any of these things here we're just rationally you want to get into it and really look at these things and I love the memory text found in the book of Hebrews chapter 4 verse 12 most of you surely know this and it says for the word of God is a what living or quick powerful sharper than any two-edged sword its piercing notice even the the the division of the soul and the spirit of the joints and the morrow it is a discerner of the thoughts and the intents of man so it's it takes man inside out knows all about doesn't it God knows all about us I like it because it says it's quick and it's living powerful means the word is effective it can really when you put it inside it becomes effective you keep it outside it's not effective that's right you know we got it we got a battery here I mean you know it's not it needs it needs to be jumped you've got to put the jumper cables on there and the jumper cables you put on there you got to have a car with a little bit of power to jump that over and I feel like I need that jump of the Holy Spirit right there power to put into our spiritual batteries today and I'm sure that you do too and I'm thankful that we have a God that says that it's a Living Word is powerful it's sharper than any two-edged sword because it rightly divides done it both ways and separates so the lesson brings out sabes part lesson brings out scripture alone once again we'll repeat that through the the end of these lessons scripture alone is the final authority I like that that's right I don't know about you but I was raised I needed a final authority you know you can let me just go any direction there was a bottom line on here so as to me the scripture is okay so the scripture is the bottom line for us today and it's a final authority when it comes to doctor and when it comes to you know any other issues matters of faith and so on and so forth when the Protestant Reformation we just step back for just a moment Protestant Reformation revolted against Rome and we know that they did why because Rome had been teaching teaching errors that's right of Scripture and so the Bible gave the Protestant Reformation a good force and gave it a good authority a good foundation which to stand on so this week we look at solar scripture in great detail as the ultimate I like this doctrinal Authority somebody's lesson quickly point one right here it's right here Scripture as the ruling norm well what does that mean Scripture as the ruling norm to me it goes back to what we've all been discussing here again it always points back to Scripture so little scripture and seventh-day Adventist Christians is I'm not going to try to say this in any kind of way this be offensive or her to have people have this the head swell or whatever there it is but I've met a lot of people you know and they've we talked about studying the Bible with different ones and seventh-day addresses Christians has always been considered and tell me if I'm wrong people of the book that's right and we should be that's right not anything else but we're people of the book and so exactly without the head swelling nothing to about that at all it has to do and I've heard people say it all the time and not being one they will say if you're gonna study whether seventh-day Adventist you better know the Bible have you ever heard that if you're gonna study with me you better know that's not trying lift anything up that simply we're doing what God has said in his word to get into the word to learn the word because he is the word that we need inside of us recognize the authority of the Bible and it is the ruling norm normal this is what we take is a Bible for our theology we take it for our life we take it for our doctrine our teaching and then trying to find out what is truth and I've heard good comments on that trying to find out what truth is and so we by doing that we rule out simply put we rule out emotions and feelings and human reasoning and tradition I think we've heard that said so often here jesus said this remember he said in vain do they worship read the scripture in vain do they worship me what teaching for doctrines the commandments of men I just heard a radio program just to just the other day and I was captivated by it I you I I'll be honest I just I don't listen to too much that's out there unless I think that it's solid right that makes sense it's solid because I don't want anything that I understand it's not truth into my brain I want to know what truth is and then build from there but they were talking about tradition and the Bible and a man called in I I got to tell stories because I mean this is this is this is just it was yesterday right and a man called in who really wanted to know when he called in to a talk show program and it was of the Roman Church and so that two men they're very educated to seem and so on and so forth but the man called him because he was interested in finding out what is truth and so he started talking about the difference in tradition and and and in the Bible what's the difference of course they tried to convince him that tradition was on the same plane or even higher than the Word of God but that bothered me I wanted to get in on the fray because I that the man that had called was honest in heart he was trying to figure out and they were trying to point him said he said what I've been figuring out and by trying to read the word which he belonged to the Roman Church he said I've been reading the word and the word says this should be our the final authority on things I tried I said what the church is the final authority on this and it's above you know really the scripture and I got he's okay aggravated spiritually spiritually aggravated I turned it off well anyway we're talking about this Jesus said it's in vain it's in vain that's right we should be teaching for doctrines the commandments of men and I think been read Matthew 15 verse 6 thus you have made the commandments of God as what non effect by your tradition tradition it makes it not affect the teachings off God's work do we have to be careful I found this actually a letter of 43 1895 this was written I I love that because there's two words here that I just I'm gonna hang on to it's just that simple here's what it says air could not stand alone some of you read that air cannot do what stand alone air can't stand you know he's can't stand alone just like the enemy can't create anything he can't do anything he's a copycat he looked at regard in that right and everything that God did he tried to do it in a different way and put his stamp on that so air cannot stand alone notice it and would soon become extinct if it did not fastened itself here it is air is a parasite upon the tree of truth right so I like the word parasite notice it is there there traditions of men like this notice floating germs like floating germs attract themselves to the truth of God men regard them as a part of truth see this is the danger part right there men they see it and it goes over and over and is told and pretty soon people think that it is it is the truth notice it men boldly teach for doctrines the commandments of men as tradition passed on from age to age so air then we can look at is a parasite that cannot stand on its own it is a floating germ that attaches itself many times to what with an inflection to truth and tries to draw things out of it so we want to make sure that we don't have any parasites hitting any germs floating around in our experience with Jesus 1st Corinthians 4 1 through 6 I'm not gonna have time to read that but especially verse 6 in 1st Corinthians 4 1 through 6 if we had time we read all these things that would run out of time here but I know that you're going to do it because you're jotting these things down and you're going to study Paul said we should not go beyond we've read this what is written that's right you can go beyond what is written and I think sometimes our answer should be yeah in a rather to get a little confused on certain things and confuse other Minds appear he said don't go beyond what is written why because scripture is the ruling norm that's right it should be for us and for anyone to say anything else you see we need to be brought back and say look again no parasites no floating germs right we want to stand by you know stand by God at His Word so why is this point crucial for our faith why is it don't go beyond what is written we know this this does not exclude I think brought out in a couple lessons previous insights in the field of study I mean we can use you know Biblical Archaeology can we not use that we can use science as it were in the right way if we can balance it we can we not use concordances can we not use you know commentaries and and I'm gonna throw in spirit of prophecy if you don't mind just throw some of these things in here but again we don't throw those out but we study right compare them for what is what is true with the Word of God right because it signs forever and stands fast so if we look and it harmonizes with the Bible feel free to use it I've often said I don't care where truth is as it were comes from as long as it is truth and harmonizing with the Bible's right people say well this group ever brought this part this group brought that part well praise God that's wonderful but because it is truth of God's Word is what I want in my heart and life so scripture is a ruling norm needs to be for us and to arrive at the proper interpretation you know scripture has to have priority about everything we talked about every aspect with again science or where it might be even our viewpoints so we must be what we must must evaluate scripture Paul made that point very clear in his writings maybe make one more point here before we close Matthew 4:4 very familiar what we need to be doing here it is what man shall not what I love this passage it to me it's as simple and so straight and you know it's just it kind of makes you hungry in a sense you know he talks about bread you know I mean spiritually hungry man must not live by bread alone but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God we go back to Sola scriptura you know by scripture alone and I encourage you to use that principle every day of your life God will be with you and you will be blessed amen thank you so much pastor Kenny what a wonderful foundation Sola scriptura and that's really what our entire lesson is about we're in lesson number five and we're going to continue this all the way to lesson number three because of the importance of the Word of God is our authority for faith and practice on Monday we look at the unity of Scripture I want to look at the cohesive unity of the Word of God and we have several points number one the Bible is unified because it has one author now we talked about in previous lessons that the Word of God of course we know comprises 66 books there's probably 40 authors spanning 1500 years three continents Asia Africa and Europe and you think about that many authors but yet God is the author overall because God is the one who inspired we know with 2nd Timothy 3 and we've quoted the scripture before by the end of this quarter you'll have memorized it Timothy 3:16 and 17 all scripture each and every Scripture is given by inspiration of God and is profitable for reproof for correction for instruction in righteousness that the man of God may be perfect or complete thoroughly equipped for every good work second Peter 2:20 and 21 knowing this first that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation for prophecy never came by the will of man but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit petroi you know would be pretty rare for one author to contradict themselves maybe unless they're a liar maybe you could catch yourself you know in some twisted lines but if you're an honest person and you wrote usually what you say is going to be consistent it would be impossible for God because we know in numbers 23 verse 19 this is Balaam remember when he was supposed to curse Israel all he said God is not a man that he should lie nor a son of man that he should repent as he said and will he not do it or has he spoken and will he not make it okay so it is impossible for God to lie God is the author of truth God is truth the Bible is unified because it has one author God number two the Bible is unified in doctrine although it has many varied parts the Bible really contains many different types of literature mm-hmm the law the books of the law the first five books written by Moses the Mosaic law the Ten Commandment law the Bible contains prophecy we have eschatological prophecies or endtime prophecies we have apocalyptic prophecies or revelatory prophecies revealing unveiling what is going to take place in the future we have Messianic prophecies Old Testament prophecies foretelling the coming Messiah the Bible contains literature and history there's a great deal of historical books in the Word of God starting after those books from Moses continuing all the way through Esther the Bible contains wisdom and poetry books specifically job and Psalms and proverbs Ecclesiastes Song of Solomon the Bible contains the Gospels the story of Jesus and his life and ministry and death and resurrection the Bible contains parables that's a different type of literature that we would find in the Word of God a short story told by Jesus teaching a moral or a spiritual lesson of course the Bible contains epistles which would be letters written specifically to a person or a church or a group of people number three the Old Testament and the New Testament are in perfect harmony with each other many people say many Christians say the Old Testament is full of a vengeful God or an angry god the New Testament we're not under the law anymore we're under grace and that is full of grace and mercy but the truth is there is no discord between the Old Testament and the New Testament right the Old Testament is unfolded in the New Testament and the New Testament is built on the Old Testament think of the sacrificial system that was instituted in the Old Testament you think about every sacrifice every time the lamb was sacrificed every ordinance contained within the sanctuary system pointed forward to the New Testament pointed forward to Jesus the Lamb of God think about justification by faith many times we say the Old Testament was about works the New Testaments about grace but the truth is justification by faith existed in the Old Testament Genesis 15:6 I love the scripture abraham believed God and he accounted it to him for righteousness that word accounted meaning in Hebrew to impute to reckon that is justification by faith pastor Kennedy that is when he believed God by faith Christ credited to his account his righteousness we see that in Psalm 32:1 and 2 blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven whose sin is covered blessed is the man to whom the Lord does not impute iniquity there's that word again and in whose spirit there is no deceit now Paul corroborates says Paul agrees with us in Romans 4 he says the justification by faith that Abraham experienced took place even before he was circumcised before any external works of the law Paul says it took place before that justification by faith took place then the New Testament builds on the old pastor Kenny I think you were the one who reminded us in a previous lesson of Matthew 5:17 Jesus speaking sense do not think that I came to destroy the law or the prophets I did not come to destroy but to fulfill and then he goes on with the Sermon on the Mount we see this further explanation as it were of the true breath length depth food height of the word of God we think he says you think Jesus speaking he says you think ok don't commit adultery because that's what the letter of the law said but he said I say to you if you even look on someone with lust that is committing adultery you say don't kill someone because that's murder and that's the letter of the law but Jesus says but I say to you if you even hate your brother or sister if you have that against someone else you have already committed murder in your heart so Jesus did not annul the law he did not make it void he did not say all were just existing under grace he magnified the logic he exalted the law to the level that they didn't even understand in the Old Testament to almost the spiritual level of the law number four the Bible is unified and in each book of the Bible and each book of the Bible is of equal importance and inspiration the Bible is unified we see this in Paul you look at the book of Romans he quotes make a guest's and I know this is putting them all on the spot make a guess how many verses in the book of Romans does Paul quote from the Old Testament you think twenty thirty forty a hundred and five one hundred and five Old Testament verses all makes reference to now you would think okay if he just quotes from one book he's saying well this one book is more important than the rest he quotes from 19 Testament books 19 of them he quotes from Genesis and Exodus Leviticus and Deuteronomy 2nd Samuel 1st Kings second Chronicles job Psalms proverbs Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel Hosea Joel Amos nahum habakkuk and Malachi 19 Old Testament books the Apostle Paul quotes from showing that each of the book each book of the Bible is of equal importance and inspiration yes finally number 5 the Bible is unified in teaching so it is easy to identify false doctrine think about the qualifications for an elder in the church now Paul tells Timothy that in 1st Timothy 3 but we're going to go to Titus 1 verse 9 he says holding fast the faithful word if he has been taught that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and convict those who contradict a healthy church is a doctor only pure church and a doctrinally sound Church the lesson says without the unity of the Bible the church would have no means to distinguish truth from error and to repudiate heresy so the Word of God and the unity we find in the Word of God is a defense as it were against error creeping into the church amen praise the Lord well the foundation which to build here is like the unity of Scripture so you see it's a good lesson so you know don't go away because we'll be right back after this ever wish you could watch Athreya bein sabbath-school panel again or share it on Facebook guide so you can follow along sharing is easy just click share and choose your favorite social media share link save a life for eternity welcome back to three B in Sabbath School panel we know where you're enjoying the lessons we want to quickly get to Tuesday's lessons with Pastor John McCain the clarity of Scripture I want to begin with Ephesians chapter four I'm gonna read verse thirteen and this verse I would say would be the anchor to the point that the lesson is going to bring out the clarity of Scripture it begins with the words till we all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God to a perfect man to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ but now verse 14 amplifies what unity is all about that we should no longer be children tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine by the trickery of men in the cunning craftiness by which they lie in wait to deceive we are living in an a part it was it was apparent in Paul's day that even back then men were preparing to deceive and Paul said the only way that deception will not be possible is if we come to the unity of the faith and on what on the knowledge of the Son of God and then he talked about how important it is that doctrines will come up that will bring about disunity that will be formulated by the trickery of men cunning craftiness if it was true in his day what is it in our day Oh second Timothy chapter 3 says ever learning never able to come to the knowledge of the truth and so the clarity of Scripture is vitally important any appeal to leave something that is not supported by the scripture falls into the category of the cunning craftiness of man hands tradition experience belief reason we talked about that and when our prior lessons I just can't forget that thought was so amazing none of those should supersede the importance of the Word of God let's begin clarity is important how do you clarify ambiguous the scriptures Jesus made a particular point and I'll read a few passages and there's something that he brought out on each one of these passages that makes it obvious as to why he asked the question Matthew 21 42 notice what the Lord says jesus said to them have you not read in the scriptures the stone which the builders rejected has become the chief Cornerstone this was the Lord's doing and it's marvelous in our eyes then in Matthew 12 in verse 3 but he said to them have you not read what David did when he was hungry he and those who were with him and then in Matthew 19 verse 4 and he answered and said to them have you not read that he who made them at the beginning made them male and female and finally Matthew 22:30 1 but concerning the resurrection of the dead have you not read what was spoken to you by God saying and then he quotes in verse 32 but there's a phrase that comes up every time in which what is it have you not read have you not read and I want to make a point which I like that this ought the authors of this lesson brings it out over of a number of lessons have you not read is the questions right now if you have not read what you believe is not valid if somebody told it to you it's not valid if you have not discovered it in a thus saith the Lord it is not valid Jesus made the point you've got to read so let's point out some of these scriptures the very first one is we've got to read search the Scriptures daily Acts chapter 17 verse 11 principles to understand the Bible you've got to read if you haven't read it and nothing trouble to be more panelists than people saying I know the Bible says it's somewhere but I'm not sure worded don't even go there if you don't know where it is it's like saying where does Pastor Kenny live I know it's somewhere around here okay well once you say that I need to ask somebody else because you don't really know I know it's somewhere around here we've got to be a people of the word and know where God's Word and what it says acts 17 verse 11 search the Scriptures for yourself these were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica in that they received the word with all readiness and searched the scriptures how often daily to find out whether these things were so I've met pastors and leaders and teachers and preachers and members and prelates and so this goes on and on and people have said well my pastor says oh my church says all my teacher told me all my parents believed all my generation or this is what my denomination holes and I and I want to ask them have you read that in the Bible and Jesus made that point clear he referred to all these Old Testament experiences and he says have you not read right and if you haven't read and know for yourself it's nothing but speculation and speculation when it comes to eternal life is a dangerous thing that's correct the second thing be diligent students be what kind of students diligent diligent students second Timothy 2:15 and we've repeated some of these passages but if it's right here be diligent students be diligent to present yourself approved to God a worker who does not need to be ashamed rightly dividing the word of truth hmm another word that has lost been lost in the sauce is truth what's that well who's arrived and said what is truth was a pilot what is truth well truth is not open to negotiation truth is based on the Word of God sanctify them through that truth thy Word is truth John 17:17 you will know the truth and the truth shall make you free in this day and age one thing that's missing in Christianity is what is the truth right it's not about the experience of your church choir or how nice the community programs are it's not about the size of the denomination nor the popularity of its a leader or its speaker it's not about the stained glass nor the place that they meet if it's not about truth I rather be on a two seater plane that's going in the right direction then on the luxury liner that's going in the wrong direction so don't close those doors and I love it when the pilot says and the passengers say not the passenger but the flight attendant says if Phoenix it's not your destination this is a good time to get off the plane if truth is not important to you this is a good time to leave the church don't stay in the church that does not have truth just because you like the music or the entertainment or is tradition okay I'm preaching past you can see what you did third reason know what the Scripture teaches galatians 4:30 yes galatians 4:30 paul begins with this very potent question nevertheless what does the scripture say i'm that powerful yes so i'm not gonna I don't need the rest of it because he's talking about the bond the woman and the free woman but the question is what does the scripture say if you don't know what the scripture says you are a wandering generality rather than a meaningful specific mm-hmm the other one don't twist the things that you do not understand second Peter 3 verse 16 as also in all the epistles speaking in them of these things in which are some things hard to understand this which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction as they do also the rest of the scripture don't ever build a doctrine on a portion of a verse the verse that just irritates me pastor Kenny like a gnat just fine around my ear that I can't swat is to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord the Bible doesn't teach that the moment you leave you're going to heaven read the context read the foreword read the pretext I'll say this in one of the other programs because I'm just my mind is gone here but texts without context as pretext if you can't support that single statement with the rest of the Bible it's a just a good model but it's not what God's Word teaches all right and they rest it to their own destruction the next one yes one you don't understand it do it David did psalm 119 verse 18 look at what he said open my eyes yes that I may see wondrous things from your law if your eyes are not open God's law is not wonderful if your eyes are not open by the Spirit of God working through you what you're looking at is not wonderful yeah it's just something you're seeing pray for spiritual insight the Spirit of God that wrote it wants to be the one that makes it clear to us amen the other thing is follow the Lord and his word when it comes to you the first time Jonah 1:1 now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the son of amity I what happened when it came to him he ran in the opposite direction but the word of the Lord came to him a second time when the word of the Lord comes to you that's the best time to accept it and not become like Jonah the only man that knows what it's like to arrive at evangelism smelling like a fish lastly be willing to hear the word of the Lord Jeremiah 20 to 29 o earth earth earth hear the word of the Lord and finally order your life according to the word of the Lord first Kings 1224 thus says the Lord you shall not go up nor fight against your brethren the children of Israel but every man returned to his house for this thing is from me therefore they obeyed the word of the Lord and turned back according to the word of the Lord perhaps I should give up my time well we have arrived here at Wednesday's portion of the lesson and it's scripture interpret Scripture and it is because God is the author since God is the author he's going to make sure that all the scriptures harmonize that's right so when you find a difficult passage in the scripture continue reading asking the Lord to guide you and he will guide you through the Holy Spirit into the truth now this is a principle of the scriptures that the scripture interprets Scripture and we're going to look at some examples during this moment and so join me as we consider the moment when the disciples were disappointed sad sorrowful that Jesus Christ had died hmm and they're on the road to Emmaus and Jesus joins them hmm what are you guys talking about why are you guys sad now this is in Luke chapter 24 and we're going to verse 44 through 47 well actually all right I need to reverse 27 first Luke 24 27 it says here and beginning at Moses and all the prophets this means he took them all the way to Genesis he expounded to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself well they had they were shocked they you know they Jesus Christ died on the cross they thought it was him that would deliver Israel hmm but Jesus died right there their hopes were dashed so he begins to tell them that this had to happen verse 44 then he said to them these are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the law of Moses and the prophets and the Psalms concerning me and noticed this part and he opened their understanding that they might comprehend the scriptures we need to ask the Lord to open our understanding and that we might comprehend the scriptures then he said to them thus it is written and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached preached in his name to all nations beginning at Jerusalem and so Jesus helps them understand why he had to die and you remember that Peter said oh no this is not going to happen to You Lord he did not understand fully the mission of Christ but how thankful he was when he understood and that's why he was able to say that Jesus Christ has a lamb without blemish we have been purchased not by simple gold silver or gold by what by the blood of the Lamb Jesus Christ and so the beauty of Scripture is to the beauty of letting the scripture interpret scriptures that is shed further light and its own meaning and so we as we looking at description we're trying to understand something just like pastor Loma King said you have to look at the context look at the immediate context look at the remote context read before read after and look if you're studying a subject don't just stay in one area you have to go from place to place here a little there a little interpret the scripture with the scripture yeah now let's look as some other example because the Bible really is its own expository scripture has to be compared with Scripture and this is why I'd like to take you to Revelation chapter 17 and I would like a kind soul to help me read Revelation chapter 17 verse warrior Revelation chapter 17 in verse 1 which brings out something that we need to explain with another scripture absolutely I got to hear revelation 17 verse 1 then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and talked with me saying to me come I will show you the judgment of the great harlot who sits on many waters so here we have a harlot sitting on many waters and now if we let scripture interpret Scripture we don't have to come up with something out of thin air like that's right we've heard before we can let scripture interpret Scripture so the angel in revelation 17 verse 15 he system and he says to me the waters which you saw where the harlot sits are the people's and the multitudes and nations and tongues so the scripture is interpreting the scripture which I have to invent something we can rely on the Word of God right and let's look at at some other one this is a very interesting when you go to Book of Daniel saw the Book of Daniel chapter 8 in the Book of Daniel chapter 8 and there we will see a delineation of a a prophecy a vision that Daniel saw and so I'm gonna begin in verse 3 he says then I lifted my eyes and saw and there standing beside the river was a ram which had two horns and the two horns were high but one was higher than the other and the higher one came up last I saw the RAM pushing westward northward and southward so that no animal could withstand him nor was there any that could deliver from his hand but he did according to his will and became great and as I was considering suddenly a male goat came from the West across the surface of the whole earth without touching the ground and the goat had a notable horn between his eyes and as you read this is what in the world does this what is all this going on here and so continued reading so I have to continue reading yeah and as you continue reading in Daniel chapter 8 and you arrive at verse 19 the angel begins to interpret for him and he said look I am making known to you what shall happen in the latter time of the indignation for at the appointed time the end shall be the RAM which you saw having two horns that are they are the kings of media and Persia yes and the male goat is the kingdom of Greece the large horn that is between its eyes is the first king as for the broken horn and the for Hall and the four that stood up in its place four kingdoms shall arise out of that nation but not without with its power so we see here I didn't read to you all it says it all the Book of Daniel we could have started in Daniel chapter verse 1 to get more context but you see that the scripture is being interpreted by Scripture and this is a firm ground now there's a principle here so when it talks about a horn we understand then that it means a kingdom or a power and so we saw this applied applied here in Daniel chapter 8 and when you go to other places in the Bible and it talks about it when we're talking about Bible prophecy now not every time you see a horn note that must be a nation know when we're talking about Bible prophecy right now this is a wonderful one that I'd like to share with you and perhaps we may have to end with this one in John chapter 1 we have a wonderful scripture memorized by many beginning in verse 1 we have these words in the beginning was the word and the Word was with God and the Word was God he was in the beginning with God all things were made through him and without him nothing was made that was made so we have scripture already being interpreted here if you read read verse 1 it says in the beginning was the word well what's the word and the Word was with God oh wait a minute and the word was god okay the word here was God but then when you go down to verse 14 it brings to to you a revelation because it establishes you know here the word which is really Jesus he was with God from the beginning but then in verse 14 we have these words and the word became flesh and dwelt among us and we beheld his glory the glory as of the only begotten of the Father full of grace and truth that's right so here we see that if you continue reading you will understand these things now there's a scripture that I won't have time to get into them just kind of mention it so that you can do some homework Jesus one point said to his disciples there are some standing here which will not taste of death till they see the son of man coming and then the chapter ends that's right there now if you did what I did at one time when I was younger I went to sleep wondering oh wow are those disciples tall alive what happened to them because they're not supposed to taste death till the they see the Son of man coming in the clouds of habit so if you stop there you have to understand that the chapters were added not that I mean the chapter divisions was added later and sometimes it seems to hinder your understanding if you stop like I did doesn't wanna go all night what happened are these disciple still alive but if you continue reading it will become clear to you and that's why I find that passage in continue reading praise the Lord well I have Thursday's lesson once again and it's entitled Sola scriptura and Ellen G white now this could be one of those lessons that you know you get a lot of responses from because there's so many different differing opinions on the the position of Scripture and connection with the inspirational writings of lmg white and so what we want to do is we simply just want the truth of the matter and that's what I'm going to attempt to do right now is simply take a healthy balanced approach to the truth and how we can relate what what is the relationship between the Bible and lmg White's writings and so we want to put that in proper perspective I want to start with Isaiah chapter 8 verse 20 I think is a great foundational text to start Isaiah chapter 8 verse 20 says to the law and the testimony if they do not speak according to this word it is because there is no light in them so being that this is entitled Sola scriptura and LNG wide you know what LNG white also has to fall in line with that particular counsel that we have in this verse right and that means anyone LNG why try and a pastor Loma King or the John Dean's anyone who does not speak according to the Word of God the Bible says there is no light in them so we want to always make sure that Sola Scripture or the Bible and the Bible alone is our guy would like to read a statement by L&G white and great controversy page 9 at 595 now we're going to read a few texts from L&G why cuz I am a firm believer that if you really want to come to understand a person's intentions they're their goal their purpose their agenda you should probably go study a little bit of what they say so that you can get a proper balanced understanding of their approach and their understanding of their own you know their own in spirt in this case LNG whites what is she that what did she think what was her position on her role in the relationship of her writings to the Bible notice what she says here I'm gonna begin with great controversy page 595 she says but God will have a people up on the earth to maintain the Bible mm-hmm notice how she didn't say maintain the writings of L&G white she says they will maintain the Bible and the Bible only as the standard of all doctrines and the basis of all reforms the opinions of learned men the deductions of science the Creed's or decisions of ecclesiastical councils as numerous and dis coordinate as are the churches which they represent the voice of the majority she says not one nor all of these should be regarded as evidence for or against any point of religious faith hmm she says before accepting any doctrine or precept we should demand a plane thus saith the Lord in its support so you you know there may be someone watching right now that says you know I'm not sure about LNG whyatt of you know I would just encourage you before you judge a book by its cover read some of her writings I I have I can't say that I have read every single line that she has ever written but I have certainly read quite a bit of what Ellen White has to wrote in her lifetime and I can tell you I'm amazed and overwhelmed at how biblically sound and biblically foundation that this powerful woman of faith was always pointing back to the scripture always telling people no go back to the Bible the Bible is your guide of faith when I was studying for this particular lesson I ran across probably one of the most powerful documents that can be written to sub to show us a healthy balance a relationship between the Word of God and LNG watch writings and this came from andrews university seminary professor merlin Deibert he's still considered one of the premier Ellen White Scholars on her writings in her life and so much of the stuff that I found from this I thought was just fantastic and in harmony with what the lesson was teaching he points out here and I'm gonna be reading from the sketch of a Christian experience and views of LNG why notice what she had to say early on in her ministry in fact from my understanding this is the conclusion from Ellen White in her very first published work ever in 1851 notice what she says she says I recommend to you dear reader the Word of God as the rule of your faith and practice by what word we are to be judged God has in that word promised to give visions in the last days not for a new rule of faith notice that I like not for a new rule of faith but for the comfort of his people and to correct those who err from Bible truth so she's emphasizing that biblical truth notice what she continues to say here in great controversy page 204 in our time there is a wide departure from there speaking of the Reformers doctrines and precepts and there is a need of a return to the great Protestant principles notice the Bible and the Bible only as the rule of faith and duty Sola scriptura in fact it's interesting to note that in in all Ellen White's published writings contained the phrase Bible in the Bible only 45 times and of course the Bible in the Bible alone 47 times so this woman was a powerful woman of faith always giving heed to the Bible always pointing people to the God of the Bible and the Scriptures alone now that being said on April 30th 1871 she had a dream and which led her to perhaps her most direct discussion of the relationship of her writings to the Bible in which she's going to explain why she you know why God gave her these writings and how they relate to Scripture notice what she says here okay she saw herself addressing a large group of an armed group at a church meeting and this is what she says you are not familiar with the scriptures notice how she starts that you speaking to these people you're not familiar with the scriptures if you had made God's Word your study with the desire to reach the Bible standard yes to reach the Bible standard and attain to Christian perfection you would not have needed the testimonies speaking of our writings you wouldn't even need my writings you wouldn't need the testimonies but she goes on to say it is because you have neglected to acquaint yourselves with God's inspired book that he has sought to reach you by simple direct testimonies she continues on the Lord designs to warn you to reprove to counsel through the testimonies given and to impress your mind with the importance of the truth of his word the written testimonies known as speaking of her writings the written testimonies are not to give new light but to impress vividly upon the heart the truths of inspiration already revealed so she makes it very clear in fact she would go on to say and in the in the work an open letter from L&G wide this is reported in review and Herald January 20th 1903 she says speaking of her writings little heat is giving her yes whether heat is given to the Bible she says the Lord has given a lesser light come on to lead men and women to the greater light so I think probably this particular quote very short very simple probably explains everything that we've just studied in read so far in the sense that L&G white herself and I have to just say for a moment I know I have little time but you know there's many many people who have a bad taste in their mouth for the writings of Ellen G wide and I believe the reason why that is is because people misuse and abuse her writings to try they take what she did not intend for it to be used to be equal or above Scripture and they use it in that way I heard a minister wants to say one time Mical but then again it's not he and it's very truthful he says you know what the largest book ever written is Ellen White says because in in the in the church you know we often have people good well many people and I say that respectfully that it's like every word out of their mouth is you know Ellen White says Ellen White says if Ellen White was alive today she would probably rebuke those type of people from one side of the room to the other because Ellen White when she was alive she was always asking the question what is the BI we'll say and right here she says speaking of the Bible the Lord has given a lesser light her writings to lead men and women to the greater light which she is making clear is the Bible so in Ellen White's point of view she's saying to us counseling us she's saying look here's the Bible and here's my writings okay that doesn't mean that they're not important that doesn't mean we don't listen to them look the Bible is the greater like kind of like the relationship between the moon and the Sun you have the greater light the Sun but the moon is also allied but but it's not a light in and of itself in that it reflects the light of the Sun and lng White's writings fit in that context and we should have that relationship clear clearly established in essence L&G White's writings are like that of many prophets of scripture I love this I love this point that the Lord spoke to and third notice many prophets in the scripture that the Lord spoke to and so and through then that never made it into the Canon of Scripture so I kind of got my words mixed up there what this is saying what this particular quote is saying is that there are prophets in Scripture that actually wrote books and their their their Canon their particular text did not make it into the Canon of Scripture a good example would be Nathanael which gives me Nathan the Prophet Nathan in 1st chronicles 29 verse 29 it tells us right there that there's a book called The Book of Nathan the Prophet Nathan was a prophet but you know what his his books his writings did not make it into the Bible what we're saying to this is that in closing we need to have a proper balanced relationship in the sense that while L&G Wat was inspired she and I you hear me quote her writings on this panel you hear you hear it all the time we believe in the inspirational writings of Ellen G why we believe God used her but at the end of the day we have to make sure that the Bible is the ultimate authority the Bible is the ultimate source and that her writings are a lesser lie that we use to lead men and women to the greater light of Scripture I praise God for the Bible and I praise God for the writings of Ellen G wife well covered I mean what we covered scripture the ruling norm unity of Scripture clarity of Scripture and we're looking at and Wednesday was the scripture interpret scripture I like that and then the relation between Bible and spirit of prophecy very well but I appreciate that very much we're gonna have a closing thought each you want to go around sister Jill it's been a great study I want to close with this Scripture Ephesians chapter 4 verse 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God to a perfect man to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ God calls us as the body of Christ to be unified but unified on the Word of God that is to be our sole authority of faith and practice not experiences not feeling good when God's Word prays alone here Jill and I've been gleaning Luke 24 45 as a beautiful passage if you don't understand something pray this prayer and he the Lord opened their understanding they might comprehend the scriptures when you ask you shall receive he will open your understanding the Bible is one of the great gifts that God gave to us as human beings and it's waiting God is waiting for us to open the scriptures that he can show us so many wonderful things that are there waiting for us to discover and understand and apply in our lives amen amen you know I just want to reiterate what I was saying on my particular lesson and the fact that you know there may be someone watching that says you know what I just don't think we need Ellen White's writings and we have the Bible and you know Ellen White actually said those sentiments if you had your Bible and followed the Bible you wouldn't need my writings but that being said I want to encourage you at home you know there's not a week that goes by that I don't pick up the writings of Ellen G white and I read them not because I replace it for the Bible but because I allow it to point me back to the Bible in a healthy appropriate way amen praise the Lord found this in three selected message 33 says when you make the Bible your food and your meat and your drink when you make it the principle elements of your character notice this you will know better how to receive counsel from God amen not you but I feel like I need counsel from God every day of my life in every direction in which I go and I'm sure you feel that way too it's been a real pleasure spending this time with each and every one of you we know that God is bleeding guiding directing and your own heart and your own you know next week we're going to be looking at wise interpretation needed so it's an awful good lesson don't miss it thank you for joining 3abn Sabbath school panel we'll see you next time [Music] you
