what's up guys mitchell watts with tiny country tv today we're going to do an experiment this is a mustang maki gt and it's rated for about 270 miles on a single charge yeah we've got a full battery here we're going to unplug it and we are literally going to drive it until it dies to see exactly how far it goes [Music] so as you can probably expect this little experiment is going to take place over multiple days i am fully expecting this thing to get hopefully close to 300 miles worth of range the epa does estimate it at 270 miles but there's no way that i can do that in my normal course of working at the dealership and things like that there's no way i can do this all in one day so it's going to be over a period of time driving the vehicle just like i normally would today it's 83 degrees outside and i've got the temperature set at 72 with an automatic so i'm not going to be doing anything crazy where i'm sweating myself out trying to extend the range or anything like that i'm going to do it under a normal situation the only difference is is i am going to limit how fast i go normally i drive it like i stole it and in this one i'm going to set the speedometer or the the cruise control rather to exactly five miles an hour faster than the speed limit is so uh the intelligent adaptive cruise control system you can set a tolerance so no matter the what's going on the car will read the speed limit signs and it'll automatically set my cruise control for five miles an hour over that so pretty pretty cool stuff there but just keep in mind that this is a real world test two hours later all right so as a quick little update one thing i love is the blue cruise i can sit here and uh talk with my hands as long as my eyeballs are paying attention to the road the vehicle will continue to drive itself completely hands and feet free so i've really really enjoyed this process through this whole thing just because of blue crews alone so if you have an opportunity to get a maki or even an f-150 or an f-150 lightning all of those vehicles have blue crews available uh depending on how you option the vehicle and the time that the software is available for that particular vehicle but what's interesting to note in the quick update is that right at about the 50 battery mark i noticed that the vehicle was estimating about 117 miles worth of range left what was really interesting is on the power out go versus recharge meter that's on the bottom left hand of the tachometer of the instrument cluster there are starting to show up some gray lines on that little uh power output what that's doing is it's limiting the power output that you have available for the machine so as the tank starts to run out of gas or a run out of electricity rather the vehicle actually reduces the amount of output and power you can apply so in other words this vehicle is significantly faster 0 to 60 on a full charge than it is with something like let's say a 50 charge or even less three hours later now that i've got this vehicle down to 50 miles until empty the low battery light has come on now you'll also notice those gray lines there's significantly more of them that is once again reducing the available output and power even more so so it's going to be really interesting to see as we continue to go down further and further and further it's going to be interesting to see what happens with the power outcome keep in mind this whole test i've not been accelerating hard i've been driving as a normal person should once again trying to get the best real world situation out of the the range of this vehicle but i'm just curious to see if this thing's just going to pull itself over and just completely die or if it's going to be a slow roll as it runs out of electricity it's going to be very very interesting to see how this plays out so one thing to know is that i actually reset the trip meter on this vehicle as well and so i've driven a total of 236 miles and i'm showing 45 miles worth of range left now i'm no mathematician but that actually sounds like you're getting more range than what the epa is estimated once again 82 degrees today in alabama so this is not a perfect situation where you know you might have somebody that lives in wisconsin and it takes more to heat the inside of the vehicle and might take more toll on the battery this is just designed to kind of really put forward in the epa's test to the test that makes sense before we go any further in this video i do want to let you know that we have some really cool tests lined up with the f-150 lightning and as you know the lightning is the all-electric ford f-150 pickup truck now what we're going to do if this video gets 2 000 likes on it we will take the f-150 lightning itself and we will strap a big old trailer to it and see what kind of range test we can get out of the f-150 lightning when it is under load because that's one of the biggest questions that we have in that vehicle is how far can you go when you're towing something so if you want to see that video make sure you smash that thumbs up button 2 000 likes and we will make sure that you know what i'm gonna take up the steps even i'm gonna strap my bronco assuming that is within the spec and the weight and of the trailer and the all that kind of stuff uh i'll take my bronco put it on a trailer and tow it with the f-150 lightning and see exactly how far you can go on a single charge while towing so i have a little bit of a confession i this is the most nerve-wracking thing i've done making a youtube video in a very very long time i am one of those kinds of guys that cannot stand to run low on gas or on a charge and so intentionally running this thing to empty uh it i checked my heart rate look it just said 97 beats a minute on my heart rate for my apple watch i am so nervous uh but i guess you got to do it for the youtube to find out exactly what happens when you run completely out of gas in your electric vehicle so oh this is this is it now i will tell you that i am actually driving intentionally away from the dealership and then turning around and driving right back so that way when i do run out of electricity it's going to be very close to the dealership uh but i'm going to go through that same steps that same process of exactly what i would do if i were a consumer there's not going to be any weird like hey oh i'm going to take a power boost f-150 and charge it up on the side of the road i have not called roadside assistance yet i have not done anything nobody knows what's going on i'm just testing this thing out to see what not only how far can you go on a charge but also what does it look like when you do run out of fuel fuel gas electricity you know what i mean i also want to mention that uh if any of this video comes off as negative i don't mean that towards electric vehicles in general in full disclosure i'm going to make an announcement in this video and that is that i am an f-150 lightning order holder in fact uh i went to that event the live launch event and while i was at that live event i'm on my smartphone reserving my f-150 lightning right then right there while i'm sitting there watching jim farley uh actually announce the vehicle live from the stage i'm one of those people that think that a that a electric vehicle is awesome convenient a lot of fun to drive i don't really drive it because i think i'm saving the environment or how does uh you know i understand that a lot of electricity on an electric vehicle could come from a coal power plant especially in places like in alabama but realistically i am super pumped about electrification because of the the convenience the power the performance uh those kinds of aspects okay so uh it's getting real now the gps says i'm 35 miles away from the dealership and it shows i have a range of 33 miles this should be very very interesting all right we're down to 19 miles until the thing is completely out of uh energy and we've got 21 miles left to the dealership uh but the main reason that i'm making this little segment is to say huge thanks to my buddy autovlog uh this idea actually stemmed from him now he's not a big electrification kind of a guy but he has a series of videos where he says this is what happens when fill in the blank and he does crazy things like pouring vodka in the fuel tank of his ford ranger just to see what happens and i was watching one of his most recent one of those videos and i was like you know what i wonder what happens if you just take a mockie and just run it all the way to empty and so huge thank you to mike at autovlog for the inspiration on this video okay so this is a new update charger distance critical nearest charging is near the end of your range find a charger or risk running out of energy so i have not seen this notification on the big infotainment screen it's good to know that ford gives you that ability and i can click right here to find chargers it automatically flips them over to their navigation system and it gives you a list of different chargers that you can use whether it's charge point or capstone parking deck whatever town there's a yeah there's a lot of different options it gives you every one of the available chargers right there so that is pretty nice now i will tell you that our dealership uh is ev certified which means we have to have a certain level of type of a charger for vehicles just like this one keep in mind that if you do run into a situation where you need to charge most ford dealers that are ev certified they have to have those chargers and you can use those to charge up by the way if you're ever cruising through we don't charge anything for our level 2 chargers and we're happy to have you all right so the battery has hit zero percent charge i've got two miles worth of range left and i've got 1.9 miles until i get to the dealership in fact this exit that we've got right here this is the exit for the dealership so i'm going to keep driving past that exit and see how much further once this gets down to zero miles of range we're gonna calculate exactly how many more miles i can drive on zero miles worth of range to say i'm nervous is an understatement and i don't know why i i should know the outcome but i guess depleted battery stops safely now oh wow it's literally telling me to stop safely okay so maybe i will go ahead and get off on the interstate and finish the rest of this test i don't i don't know what to do depleted battery stops safely now i i've obviously not ever seen that one before nope i'm gonna stick to the plan i'm going to stay on the interstate once this thing starts to not be able to maintain the speed because i don't know if you can see that big truck in front of us but the blue cruise is still doing its thing still maintaining a distance between me and that vehicle in front of it and once that battery starts to say hey i'm sorry i can't keep up anymore that's when i'm going to uh okay don't know why i'm so nervous zero worth of miles worth of range at 45 42 83 is the mileage by the way according to the range itself uh if you would if i would have stopped right now 287.9 miles is exactly how far i've gone on this single charge which keep in mind 270 is what the epa estimates it at so it's really neat to see that ford has under promised and over delivered on the range oh the air conditioner just shut off oh i didn't think it was gonna do that okay so the air conditioner has shut off to obviously make sure that i can continue driving that is interesting blue cruise is still working zero miles worth of range i'm still trucking now i'm also kind of going downhill slightly so i haven't come to my first hill where i can't get up it while i'm waiting on this thing to completely die i'm looking at 90 of the energy went to my driving habits i will say 5 went to climate control climate use basically all those kinds of things and the other thing other five percent is going to be the accessories i am assuming that is going to be things like the wireless phone charger maybe the heated seats not quite sure uh probably your headlights things like that so all of the different accessories inside of the vehicle did consume five percent wow this dude is still trucking with zero miles worth of range it's not not too shabby i can't believe he's still going it won't even let me turn the air conditioner on it literally will not let me turn on the air conditioner it's locked me out completely okay so i'm going to get off of this exit on the interstate and start heading back to the dealership because i don't think it's going to make it all the way back from here surely it can't i mean i've already been riding for quite a few miles on zero miles until the battery is completely dead but and it actually has pretty i wouldn't say decent acceleration but it it actually accelerates with zero battery and zero miles worth of range okay this is interesting there's a new light on the dash and it has got a picture of a turtle on it i guess that means that i'm not gonna be able to go very fast but you know what every time i read that book the tortoise and the hair the tortoise always wins that was terrible so those little bars that we talked about earlier that it kept reducing the amount of output of energy those bars have increased in number and now it's at the point where it literally shows the power output that is available is very very small this is interesting to see all right so this is the first decent sized upward hill since i've hit zero miles per empty and it's not accelerating but i'm not slowing down i'm maintaining a speed at 61 miles an hour but can't go much faster because there's a truck in front of me yep and now i am to the point where the acceleration is pretty much non-existent i'm going to get off at the exit at the dealership because i don't think it's going to make it much further and i'm hoping that it'll die relatively close to the dealership so that way when we call roadside assistance and see if they can help us we won't have far to go okay so depleted battery says stop safely now it is literally dead it died yeah this is not a good place for it to have died oh my goodness let's see if maybe i can turn something off and get it off to the because i'm literally in the middle of the road so i am i i have ran out of uh energy it literally just kind of just jerked and now i can't get it to go anywhere it it's i'm literally blocking traffic it's hot as heck up in this thing all right i'm getting out okay so now i need to call roadside assistance i uh in full disclosure don't have their number memorized so let's type in ford roadside assistance all right looks like it is 1-800-241-3673 if you're calling for roadside services press one are you looking to open a new roadside assistance request yes i am sending you a text message to open a roadside request once you receive the text tap the link and follow the steps to submit a roadside request okay so this is new to me as well uh so we come in here and uh battery service flat tire locked out knee to toe out of fuel technically technically i'm out of fuel what type of fuel do you need electric charge i got to turn on location services okay perfect so i've got the location services turned on okay location driveway street uh yeah i guess you can highway ramp there we go and then hit continue when do you need service we definitely need it now will you be with the vehicle when the service arrives yes i will and it's asking me to put the vin number for the vehicle in based on the vin number was able to tell it's got 4200 miles on it give or take roughly so i just got off the phone with roadside assistance they've got a tow truck on the way to toes to the dealership but this is going to be very interesting because the battery is so dead it won't even go into neutral and keep in mind that this is a four wheel drive an all-wheel drive vehicle since it's the gt it's got motors in the front and the rear so it's going to be really interesting to see how they get this thing on a flatbed or whatever what kind of record it is since i've i don't know we'll see how this works out all right so i just got a text message from ford motor company the roadside assistance and they said hey this particular recovery service this towing service is going to be there the estimated time of arrival is 110 to 140 minutes and they get a number that you can actually reach that particular tow truck company so that is pretty cool i'm going to go ahead and call them right now and see if i can narrow down that estimate on time look at that they're actually calling me look at that talk about service while we're sitting here waiting on the tow truck to tow us back to the store i started thinking about it like okay so what if this thing is so dead that you can't even get the doors open because keep in mind you've got a normal looking forward key but you have basically a blank key i mean there's nothing to it so you can't stick it in here and turn it to open up the door it's not possible because you've got this button located right here now thankfully it's got enough of a you know the normal battery to get me in and out of the door but if it dies completely there is a hidden trick on how you can get inside the vehicle now in the front of the mock e you'll notice that everything looks normal right here there's one exception you notice this cutout right here you ever wondered what that's for you pop this open and you've got an extra plug where you can plug an outside battery source to it to get enough power to the vehicle so that way you can unlock the hood pop the hood open up the doors of the vehicle what have you i think that is a very intelligent thing that ford has thought through so the nice thing about the maki is there is a way to get the thing into neutral in an emergency situation just like this one come into your screen right here and when you tap on the vehicle itself you want to come down come into vehicle itself and then you want to come down to the emergency tow you press and hold to initialize and then it'll automatically pop that thing into neutral here we go emergency tow engage turn ignition off all right so roadside assistance has got us getting it loaded up and take it back to the dealership [Music] [Music] all right so ford roadside assistance has got us uh it's quite the process to load an electric vehicle onto that flatbed and actually get it here safely as we found out through this whole process there's also a very correct and a very incorrect way of towing this thing there's actually dedicated towing provisions and you want to make sure you hook to those instead of the battery rails because it can cause some damage to the battery if the person that's hooking it up does it wrong so just make sure if you find yourself in this situation make sure that you do the due diligence and hook up to those correct spots so this is not something i would recommend people do just to test but once again this is just one of the stupid things we do for youtube so if nothing else for all that extra hassle and effort please give this video a thumbs up we greatly appreciate it if you want to see some more uh f-150 lightning content as well that is definitely coming your way so make sure you are subscribed to the channel so you don't miss those and if you have any questions comments or you want to roast it down because it is a lot more difficult than just putting a couple two three four gallons of gas in the vehicle on the side of the road it you have to have a toad but it is nice before it includes that as a part of their roadside assistance is the free towing to the nearest charger so guys thank you so much for watching this video if you haven't already done so make sure you are subscribed to the channel with that bell notification turned on so you don't miss a single video peace [Music]
