Nvidia just launched this RTX 4080 graphics card it is the second card in their 4000 series lineup after the 4090 that launched a few weeks back and compared to the 1490 it is supposed to be a bit more accessible it is supposed to Cost Less it is supposed to pull less power but still offer quite a performance however with an MSRP of twelve hundred dollars in the US and 1470 Euros here in the EU it is very expensive especially for an 80 card so it kind of needs to perform exceptionally well to justify this high price so we tested it in 28 different games across three different resolutions to see if it's worth considering this card at all so let's begin this video is brought to you by seasonic and their Prime TX power supplies these fully modular high quality power supplies are extremely efficient they are very quiet due to their new hybrid fan control that stops the fans completely under 40 load they offer a variety of connections for any kind of systems you have in mind and you even get the new 12 volt high power connection you need for the brand new RTX 490 graphics cards from Nvidia they range from 650 Watts all the way up to 1600 Watts for the biggest enthusiasts out there and as a nice bonus you get a cozy 12 year long warranty check them out using the links in the description below the RTX 4080 Founders Edition uses the exact same heatsink design as the RTX 1490 Founders Edition it is about 30 centimeters long three slots thick and it weighs around 2.1 kilos so it should technically fit most ATX cases on the market but I still think it is wise to check the specs of your case or grab a measuring tape to make sure it fits it is built really well and it has a very elegant look to it with just the GeForce logo lighting up white when the system is on it also has the same flow through design we've seen on previous Fe card so you do want to make sure that your case has some free space and some airflow on the top side of this GPU it uses the new 16-pin 12 volt high power connector so you only have a single cable to deal with and you get a splitter that converts three eight pin pcie cables from your power supply to one of these new ones but the adapter is quite short and it is hard to Cable manage it now I was using the seasonic native cable for all my testing and that one is much longer it is easier to work with and it just looks better in my opinion so if you want a longer cable as well do check with your power supply brand because most of them are sending out these cables for free or you can also get something even fancier like cable mod for example on the back you get a single HDMI 2.1 connection and three display port connections if you look at the specs the main thing to notice is the significant Gap in cores between the 4080 and the 4090. if we look at the last generation the gap between the 3080 and the 3090 was much smaller But Here There is a big gap in terms of Cuda cores tensor cores as well as RT cores the memory bus is also smaller but you still get 16 gigabytes of gddr6x which should be enough for any game at 4K resolution right now but also in the foreseeable future with a TDP of 320 Watts the 4080 is a lot more reasonable than the 4090 and as you will see later on the actual power use is often even lower than that anyway I'm going to compare this 4080 to four other cards that I have the RTX 49 90 because that is the current top tier option the RTX 3080 because that is the predecessor of this card the RTX 1390 because this card is currently selling for about the same amount of money as the 4080 MSRP and the Radeon RX 6900 XT which is amd's current top tier car that you can get for around 800 or Euros right now now all cards are reference cards from Nvidia or AMD except for the 3090 because I don't have the founders Edition so I use the MSI Supreme that does perform a few percent higher than the Fe so keep that in mind and everything was retested on my I9 3900k rig using the latest drivers but as always if you want to know all the specs and details of my benches they can be found in the description of this video starting with Spider-Man remastered the 4080 is off to a good start at 4K resolution being 46 faster than the 3080 and about an 19 faster than the 3090 in average FPS as well as one percent lows that are shown in the brackets it also leaves the 6900 XT far behind but the RTX 4090 is significantly faster at 1440p the 4080 closes the Gap with the 4090 which is running into CPU limitations and it's 1080p the CPU becomes the limit for most cards the division 2 shows similar results the 4080 is a big upgrade over the 3080 the 6900 XT and the 3090 and especially so at high resolutions but at 4K the 4090 is 37 faster now go to war shows more consistent scaling across both 1080P and 4040p resolution where the 4080 sits nicely between the 3090 and the 4090 at 4K resolution the gap between the 4080 and the 3090 is smaller but the 4090 pulls even further ahead World War Z is not that hard to run and any of these cards would be just fine no matter the resolution but the 4080 does take that nice Middle Ground between the last gen and the 4090 beating the 3080 by 58 and the 3090 by 36 at 4K resolution Assassin's Creed Valhalla is a bit harder to run but it also scales well across all resolutions at 4K the 4080 beats the 3080 by 36 percent going from about 80 to 109 FPS average and that is something you would notice if you owned a fast 4k monitor but the 6900 XT does well here too proving that you can have a good 4K experience while spending significantly less money in Troy Total War the 4080 is ahead of the 3080 by about 30 percent across all resolutions which is a decent upgrade but once again the 4090 is way ahead the 6900 XT is not too far bar yet again with a 10 Gap at 1440p and a 23 Gap at 4K resolution Far Cry 6 at high settings is limited by the processor at low resolutions but at 4K the 4080 does beat the 3080 by about 37 I know 1800 is not a particularly fast game so even 100 FPS you get on last gen cards are more than you really need but a 4080 does do better beating the 6900 XT by almost 50 percent at 4K again the 4090 is way ahead Shadow the Tomb Raider is getting a bit old but it does show a big generational Improvement of the 4080 it's a quantity resolution and 4K resolution and again a big performance Gap with a 4090 and 4K Dying Light is pretty hard to run at 4K but what is interesting here is not that the 4080 is a good generational improvement over the 3080 but that it stands out more at 1080P and 1440p than it does at 4K where the Gap with the 3090 is a bit smaller once again though the 4090 is way ahead in cyberpunk 2077 the 4080 sits nicely in between the 3090 and the 4090 at 4K and 1440p easily beating the 3080 and the 6900 XT but at 1080p the CPU limitation comes in now these results are without dlss on and do keep in mind that this is tested in a heavy outdoor part of the game so not using the lighter build built-in Benchmark that doesn't seem to truly represent the experience in this game Wolfenstein Youngblood is a title that favors Nvidia and it scales well with RTX cards in general watchdog's Legion hits a clear CPU bottleneck at low resolutions but at 4K the 4080 is beating the 3090 by 32 percent and the 3080 by 50 percent Assassin's Creed Odyssey is another game where the 4080 easily beats the last generation cards but gets beaten by the 4090 yet again Borderlands 3 is another example where the 4080 seems to be relatively more comfortable at lower resolutions where it beats the previous generation easily then at 4K where it sits much closer to the 30 90. Doom Eternal is a game that runs so well that no monitor can display the differences at any resolution or refresh rate but it does nicely show the scaling potential of the 4080 even at low resolutions with the 4080 is far ahead of anything else from the last generation in dirt 5 on high settings with some RT features enabled the 4080 beats the 3080 by about 40 to 50 percent depending on the resolution which is nice for fast 4K monitors in particular the 4090 though is 30 to 40 ahead at high resolutions if we look at Formula 1 2022 without dlss enabled AMD really struggles with this title not even hitting 30fps on a 4K resolution and barely passing 60 FPS on 1440b so in comparison the 4080 looks a lot more attractive with 103 FPS on Quad HD and 62 FPS on 4K but the 4090 again does even better here CS go is a bit odd for this card it is typically CPU bound even on high settings and high resolutions but while everything looks kinda as expected on 1080p the results on High resolutions do look a bit strange at 4K the 4080 is behind the 3080 and the 4090 is behind the 6900 XT and then the one percent lows don't follow that scaling so I suppose there is a bug either with the Nvidia driver a recent Windows update or both now I did check with Nvidia and they confirmed that there is something going on and that they're looking into it so I do expect these results to change over time Rainbow Six Siege is another high FPS competitive title and it looks more like I would have expected it to look but this is also another game that just runs so well on all cards and all resolutions that no monitor can really display just yet in outriders we're Back to Basics with the 4080 beating everything from previous years and showing a nice generational Improvement compared to the 3080. but for that handful of die-hard competitive outriders players out there the 4090 is 19 ahead on 1440p and 34 ahead on 4K resolution in control the 4080 Falls between the 3090 and 4090 at high resolutions and it's 1080p we are hitting that CPU bottleneck yet again in Tiny Tina's wonderlands we see a similar story but without the CPU bottleneck so the 4080 is generally speaking a nice upgrade over anything last gen but it is also a bit disappointing to see how far it sits behind the 4090. since some of you requested it a Red Dead Redemption is back in the list although for some strange reason it refused to run with the 6900 XT and the 3900k with the latest windows version now the 4080 is about 35 to 40 ahead of the 3080 in all resolutions with the 4090 being 23 to 31 ahead of the 4080. another new game is the plague tail Requiem which is very heavy on the GPU at higher resolutions with all last generation cards struggling to hit 60fps at 4K without dlss the 4080 beats the 3080 by about 40 to 50 percent on all three resolutions and more importantly 68 FPS makes that game perfectly playable with dlss that goes up to 109 FPS so I really do recommend you enable it I also added Gotham Knights though I'm not sure if I'm going to keep this title or not because the results are actually a complete mess so there is a CPU limitation at both 1080P and 1440p and even at 4K resolution four of the five cards perform very similarly while the 4090 magically managed just to pull ahead by about 50 percent now we retested everything several times to be sure that this is right but still I think it doesn't look representative compared to the other games in the list in Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 the 4080 once again shows a great Improvement compared to the 3080 across all resolutions with frame rate differences that you would actually benefit from if you own a fast 4K 1440p or 1080p monitor but it is also another example where the 4090 is just way more impressive and it's a game where AMD does extremely well too with the 6900 XT performing very close to the 4080 while costing half as much and for the ray tracing enthusiasts so let's see a couple of games with Ray tracing and dlss enabled and here on average the 4080 is offering about 50 more FPS than the 3080 on a 4K resolution which is a bit more than average we saw in a other games because of the improved RT and tensor course but I don't think that these results change the overall story of the 4080 it will be completely fine for that impressive 4K gaming but going for a 40 90 will come in handy in heaviest of Ray tracing titles like cyberpunk 2077 for example so let's summarize all this if I compare the 4080 to its predecessor the RTX 3080 the 4080 is ahead by 31 on average even at 1080p where many games are restricted by the CPU performance in 15 games the 4080 is more than a third faster with some of those titles showing an improvement of 50 or more at 1440p there is a 42 of a difference between them on average that's a big generational Improvement and very similar to what the 4090 offered compared to the 3090 on this resolution now normally you would expect a newer higher generation car to pull further head as the resolution goes up but at 4K the average percentage between them remains at 42 or just slightly more if we discount the Cs go result which is likely a bug now that is still a big jump but it's smaller than the 60 jump the D40 90 made compared to the 3090. if you compare it to the amd's current best car the 4080 is ahead by about 24 on 1080p losing by a small margin in three games but winning in 23 titles and in 20 of them buy a 10 margin or more at 1440p the average margin goes up to 32 percent with 23 out of 26 Games showing a margin of 10 or more and 18 out of 26 games by 25 or more at 4K the 4080 beats the 6900 XT by a 39 average or just over 40 percent if we discount the likely bugged CS go result the 4080 wins in 21 on games by a margin of 25 or more which is definitely a significant upgrade but the bigger problem here is the price so I can currently buy a 6900 XT for just under 800 euros while the 4080 MSRP is almost twice as much and there is a high possibility that you won't be able to find one at MSRP at all and even if you account for nvidia's feature Advantage like a better Ray tracing performance like dlss support double encoders and so on those things become a tough argument when you need to pay more than twice as much for a 40 of an improvement in rasterization performance and if we look at the RTX 3080 it is the same story you can buy one for 850 to 900 euros nowadays and the issue I have here is that for anyone that is willing to spend more than twelve hundred dollars or Euros on a super high-end card you might as well add a bit more and get a 40 90. instead now in the past the top tier Nvidia cards were always super expensive while being barely faster than the next one in line so the 1080 TI and the 2080 TI weren't that much slower than the Titans and the 3090 was not that faster than the 3080 but with this generation the 4090 is ahead of the 4080 by 20 on 1440p and 34 on 4K which is a huge difference now the 4090 is more expensive but if you can afford a 4080 the 4090 doesn't seem that far off in price while it gets you a far better product having said that you should think about what you really need depending on the resolution you plan to game on because when we look at a 1440p summary almost every game runs at over 144 FPS and every game in my list that scored less than that includes dlss which would put it way over and it is pretty similar at 4K so most games easily run at 100 FPS or more and every game in this list that scored less than 100 includes dlss which would put it above that 100 Mark The Only Exception is Tiny Tina's wonderlands at 94 FPS but that still means you get a fantastic gaming experience with a high refresh rate 4k monitor and an RTX 4080. now another thing to consider is power draw because the 4080 did all of this with an average power draw of around 300 watts Which is less than the 3080 which is way less than the 3090 I used and which is considerably less than the RTX 4090 the performance per watt of this card is just great overall which means that a good 750 watt power supply can handle this car just fine even when paired with a high-end CPU and it also means that it will be easier to keep it cool now I will cover the thermals of this card a bit more when I talk about the partner cards in my next video but as you would expect from an RTX 1490 cooler on a lower power 4080 chip The Thermals of this card are excellent overall the cores generally stay under 60 degrees with the memory and the hotspot just above that and at 40 decibels it is a pretty quiet card one final topic I want to mention is DLS S3 this new version of dlss has a feature called frame generation which basically uses AI to generate an extra frame in between two regular frames which means you get higher FPS but it also means you're bypassing that CPU button like you see in several titles now frame generation only works with these new cards so I kind of really compare it to previous generation and so far it is only included in a couple of games but Nvidia is pushing this hard and it should be available in about 15 titles by the end of this month Microsoft flight simulator is a great example of how dlss3 could benefit us it is an extremely CPU bound game so even with the latest gpus you're struggling to hit 100 FPS regardless of your graphics quality setting with dlss3 frame generation enabled the frame rates just went up and it looks and feels much smoother there is a slight latency penalty but in a slow game like this one that isn't nearly as noticeable as the FPS increase Formula 1 2022 is a much faster game and it is also heavy to run especially with all graphic settings set to high enabling dlss already gives you a big benefit here and then with frame generation you can go even higher however since this is a fast title where Split Second reactions can make a difference I personally would take a latency improvement over even more FPS in plague tail Requiem dlss upscaling is so useful as going from 69 to 109 FPS average is quite an upgrade but here the extra bit of FPS that frame generation offers just isn't that relevant even on a 4k monitor while playing cyberpunk 2077 with all Ray tracing settings enabled native 4K is incredibly rough on the GPU and even the 4080 struggled with this scenario in certain locations with dlss upscaling on it was still barely hitting 60 FPS but with frame generation it got to 83 FPS on average so you can really benefit from this feature in these really heavy titles I think Nvidia has done some great things with the 4000 series in terms of performance and in terms of new features but I also think that the things are a little bit more complicated when it comes to this RTX 4080. the 1490 was always going to be extremely expensive but at least it kind of performs unlike anything else on the market and if you want the very best out there it will cost you but you will still get the very best and even though the 4080 was supposed to be a bit more of a reasonable alternative to the 4090 it ended up being significantly slower while still being very expensive and if we look at the last generation the MSRP of the 3080 was 700 while the the MSRP of the 3090 was fifteen hundred dollars so the 3090 was about 15 faster than the 3080 while costing more than twice as much and now the MSRP of the 4080 is twelve hundred dollars while the MSRP of the 1490 is sixteen hundred dollars so the 4090 is 33 more expensive while offering 34 percent more performance on higher resolutions which just makes it way more attractive than the 4080. and I would say there is definitely a market for this card performance wise because it sits nicely between the 3090 and the 4090. it doesn't pull as much power and it is much easier to keep it cool and to keep it quiet but for this car to make sense I think the price needs to go down significantly and I also think that Nvidia kind of knows this because I suppose they want to sell their 3000 Series stock with as much of a margin as possible because a cheaper 4080 would also to push the 3080 and 30 90 prices down but it also might change after AMD launches their new graphics cards in December assuming that what they promised ends up being true so there is so many things going on here at the moment now AMD isn't going to compete with the 4090 so if you want to pay more for the best performing card just grab one of those and if you are looking for a card that is more in this tier I would wait a bit longer to see what AMD has to compete with and what the prices will be in a month or so anyway that is all I have for today I'm so sorry for this long video but thank you all for watching if you liked it make sure you subscribe to my channel because I will be going over the rest of the 4080 partner cards I have and comparing them to this Nvidia Founders Edition so stay tuned and see you all in the next one bye foreign [Music]
