hello and welcome to Root in about three minutes it is a game for 1-4 players there is no solo mode although there is one in the expansion playing time is around an hour it's a pretty complex game war has come to the great woodland The Marquise de Cat is working to exploit the resources of the wood and that is causing friction amongst the mice, foxes and rabbits who have banded together to form a ragtag group of rebels called the alliance it's at this moment that the Eyrie returns in force to reconquer the woods while the vagabond plays off against all parties involved only one player can win the day and determine the future of the great woodland the winner of this game is the player who reaches 30 points first competitive: only one player can rule the great woodland asymmetric: every faction and root has very different rules and powers card management: the cards in this game can be used in a variety of ways there's no point describing what a standard tern looks like because it's different for each faction the Marquise de Kat starts controlling the board and wants to build as many buildings as they can sawmills create wood which is used to make other buildings such as workshops for crafting and recruiters for more troops success for the Marquise De Kat looks like a heavily reinforced board with lots of buildings on it and powerful armies that can move and strike at attackers the Eyrie dynasties have to follow a strict set of instructions in a specific order as shown at the top of their player board each turn they must add one to two cards to these instructions and if at any point they cannot follow one of them their society collapses and that's not good for them success for the Eyrie is constant expansion and being able to build a roost each turn in order to score points The Woodland Alliance uses its supporter cards to build sympathy on the board areas with sympathy can be targeted, using matching cards, for a revolt a revolt removes all enemy pieces and allows them to place a base and recruit officers success for the Alliance involves having sympathy all over the board, bases in play and officers who can recruit more troops and build more sympathy The Vagabond is a single hero character who uses pieces of equipment to take actions they can make friends with the other factions by trading with them or enemies by attacking them the Vagabond can get extra items that other players craft by trading with them the Vagabond cannot be defeated in combat but their equipment can be damaged which slows them down success for the vagabond involves completing various quest cards and roaming around the board exploring and fighting why would you like this game? the asymmetric gameplay is key to enjoying Root each faction plays and feels completely unique and that's a real achievement in design the cards are used in many different ways in the game from craftable powers and items through to changing the victory conditions the game also comes with excellent guidance on how to play your first few turns which makes teaching the game much easier than I expected the artwork and overall theme is wonderful to look at and incredibly evocative and no game lends itself to character photographs better than root And there's already an expansion out with additional factions such as the trader otters and the sinister lizard cult the single best thing about this game is that there is a faction that will likely suit any play style not keen on area control and war? Play a vagabond instead However, Roots asymmetry can potentially cause problems as you can't really follow another players actions while you're learning as everyone's stuff works very differently this makes it harder for people who learn as they go to pick the game up and make no mistake cute critters aside this is a war game of sorts and it's exceptionally cutthroat If cute woodland critters are your thing but you want a lot less bloodlust check out Everdell and if you want asymmetric gameplay and a real world scenario you should try a distant plain ROOT: adorably murderous
