everyone it's nate here with outside cleaners on cape cod massachusetts today i'm uh well i'm in my yard and that's my shed that's my sheds roof and if we zoom in you can see that my sheds asphalt roof which is going on uh seven or eight years old now this has uh like a lot of roofs in our area it's got organic growth doing its thing upon it so we've got algae we've got lichen and um the lichen in particular is destructive to the asphalt shingles so if i do if i do nothing the next several years these are really gonna cause permanent damage in the form of what looks like little bullet holes on the outer layer of the shingles that's going to cause the shingles to deteriorate much more quickly over time and this roof will ultimately need replacing years and years and years earlier than it would otherwise need if it were to be kept clean so there's a lot of ways to clean an asphalt roof most of them in my opinion are bad typically an asphalt roof in most of the country would be doused with chlorine bleach which is very effective at killing the organic growth upon the roof but the problem we have on my shed here like a lot of cape cod is the runoff from the roof would leave permanent chemical stains upon the natural cedar siding no good no good no good no good another option power wash it again not a great idea power wash and asphalt shingles it's going to take life off those shingles and that's why the roof shingle manufacturers say very clearly don't do that so which brings us to what i'm going to do here and i'm going to do two different things as a demonstration on that part of the roof the west side i'm going to treat it with wet and forget it's a biocide it's designed to kill organic growth on exterior surfaces what that's gonna do is allow it to slowly rinse off the roof over time with our new england weather i expect that if i treat the west side of that roof with uh wet and forget i think it's probably gonna take four or five months for that that section of roofing to appear clean on this side the east side i'm going to spray it down with hydrogen peroxide just like the stuff in our medicine cabinets similarly the hydrogen peroxide will kill the organic growth growing upon the roof allowing nature and time to rinse it away slowly and gently the difference with peroxide is unlike most of what's available on the market peroxide is extremely eco-friendly meaning that it breaks down chemically into inert inert compounds very quickly that's why peroxide in our medicine cabinet comes in that brown bottle because it's broken down by sunlight in particular so that side is wet and forget this side is hydrogen peroxide today's date what is today's date bear with me monday december 6 2021 11 55 am so i'm going to spray it down let's see how it does so one of the things i like about using hydrogen peroxide on a roof is that you do see some visible evidence that something's happening um right now it's just what i'm seeing is kind of like if you put peroxide on a cut on your finger you see it foam right up and then that quickly goes away and then it just looks like a wet spot on the roof all right all set so i think you can see in the video that's been treated with peroxide the center has been left untreated that's dry and that on the west side of the roof of this face of the roof that's um wet and forget so curious to see how this does over time stay tuned
