okay welcome back to the cloud Church Bible study and I'm Rob a breaker missionary bands to the Spanish and English speaking people and we've been going verse by verse through the epistles of Paul in order of when they were written and we are now in Romans chapter seven last time we finished up chapter six and behind before that we did the entire chapter of chapter four that's give me five and chapter 4 talks about well the first time we see the mention of the word atonement and he says you there in Rome haven't received the atonement chapter six he talks about sin we saw that a Christian can sin should he know he shouldn't but he can and then we come to this chapter chapter seven and this chapter deals with the law and sin so Paul goes from talking only about sin in Chapter six and how salvation is a free gift to talking about the law and what he says here in this chapter of Romans chapter seven should put to rest these people that try to say that today were under the law we are not under the law matter of fact in Chapter six we saw that last time in verse fourteen for sin shall not have dominion over you for you are not under the law but under grace what then shall we sin because we're not under the law but under grace god forbid so we are not under the law the law does not save us today we do not follow the law to be saved to get saved to stay saved the law was here we are here and these first couple of verses in Romans chapter seven so nicely show the truth about this so if you're one of those people that goes to a church that preaches though you're still under the law and you need to get out of that church because they don't understand grace and that makes a person live in fear oh I hope I did enough I hope God accepts me I hope I'm doing good but that's not somebody should salvation is a rest its resting in Christ and knowing I'm saying no matter what happens I'm going to heaven when I die so it's not the law that saves we're saved by grace through faith from the finished work of Jesus Christ now the first couple of verses I can't wait to get to in Romans chapter 7 because we'll be talking about the topic of the law verses Christ but it's a guess it's called an allegory assembly if you will Paul goes into talking about marriage in such a way that a marriage is like this and he says like a marriage is this he says then the law and Christ is like this so let me just try to read the first three verses and then I want to comment on that in one way and then come back and comment on it another way because the Catholic Church loves these verses and the Catholic Church would take these verses entirely out of context and they try to tell people that if you ever get remarried you're living in adultery let's see what it says chapter 7 verse 1 no you're not brother for I speak to them that know the law how that the law have dominion over man as long as he liveth now who's he talking to when he says brother he's talking to some Jews in Romans and remember we looked at this as we started our study of Romans that when he writes to Romans he's writing to some Jews and Romans he's also writing to some Gentiles he's giving him all the same gospel the same message of salvation but here he says now I want to talk to you guys there that know the law you Jewish people he says how does the law have dominion over man as long as he liveth for the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law of her husband so then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress but if her husband be dead she is free from the law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another man now the Catholic Church says that if husband a woman is bound to the law and she divorces her husband that guess what if she remarries she's an adulteress or vice versa if a man divorces from his wife and remarried he's an adulteress well first of all nowhere in that verse does it say anything about divorce it says as long as but if the husband be dead she is loosed now if the husband liveth you'd be married to mother in she be called an adulteress but doesn't say there was a divorce that took place I mean that's it that's something that they tried to put into the verse in order to teach that if you get divorced and remarried then that's a sin well nowhere in this passage is divorced this passage is a type of the law in Christ as we'll see when we get to verse 4 but I need to come in on this because even Baptist ministers and Methodists and Episcopalian people come to this verse and tell people if you've ever been divorced in your life and you got remarried you're living in adultery and you can never do anything in the church and you can't hold a position in the church and you're just a scummy low down sorry I mean they did that they say that they call people names who have been divorced and remarried now sadly in the day names which we live we live in a day of easy divorce ISM people today don't study the Bible they're not taught the Bible from an early age so most people in the world today follow the world rather than the scriptures and so the world tells them oh they just don't work out getting divorce and people are getting divorced left and right now it's an awful thing to get divorced it's a bad thing it's a wicked thing as we'll see here in a minute it's something that God hates but if you're a Christian whatever happened in your past is in the past if you're saved then whatever that happened it's under the blood of Jesus Christ so what are you doing bringing up stuff that's under the blood you know some people think that the blood of Jesus Christ applies to any and every sin except divorce no it can it can apply to divorce too now if you're a Christian and you willfully divorce your husband or your wife now that's evil that's wicked you shouldn't do that so as a Christian one thing that we should learn is that divorce is not of God God never wants a man to divorce his wife if he's a Christian and God never wants a woman to divorce her husband if she's a Christian simple plain to the point don't get a divorce but it also does not say here in this verse that if you do get a divorce and get remarried that's you're an adulterer it doesn't say that what it says is if a woman is married to her husband and then is married to another man she's an adulteress it doesn't say that a divorce took place there somewhere so she's a double married I guess she's she's got two husbands not one so we have to look at this in context because a lot of people take things out of context like the Catholic Church and even other churches doing this verse and yeah it's good to preach against divorce that's great but we need to take the verses in the Bible in context of where they are so let's do that let's look at this first of all in Romans chapter 7 verse 1 it says no you're not brother before I speak to them that know the law what does the law say about this what does the law say about divorce well Deuteronomy chapter 24 there's the law and there's what the law says so Paul is starting out Romans chapter 7 saying I'm speaking to you that know the law the law says this this and this well then automatically in their mind the people that were reading this should have thought oh yeah I know that that's Deuteronomy 24 so what is the law say about this subject of divorce of remarriage and you say why why are you bringing that up because like I said the Catholic Church takes and twists these verses to teach something what is Deuteronomy chapter 24 and verse 1 through 4 this is what the Bible calls a writing of divorcement and we'll see it a little bit that God allowed Moses to put this into the scriptures but he didn't want it in many ways God really didn't want this because God hates divorce so Deuteronomy 24 says when a man have taken a wife and married her and it come to pass that she find no favor in his eyes because he had found some uncleanliness in her then let him write her a bill of divorcement and give it in her hand and send her out of his house now what is the uncleanliness and some people teach well that means if he marries her and then you just realize you know I don't really like her the later he can divorce her is that what it's saying here no there's something that ties in with the uncleanness there's a reason that she's unclean why is she unclean because she's gone out and committed adultery with another is what it seems like in the context and in an other context of other scriptures but it says here in verse one he'll give her a bill of divorcement and to her hand at center out of her house in which he has departed out of his house she may go and be another man's wife and if the latter husband hate her and write her a bill of divorcement and giveth to her hand as soon as they're out of his house or if the latter husband die which took her to be his wife her former husband which sent her away may not take her again to be his wife after that she has defiled for that is abomination before the Lord and says and thou shalt not cause the land to sin which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance so look at this here's a guy he gets a woman he marries her and then looks at her and says there's something wrong with her she's uncleanliness there maybe it's spiritual adultery she's lusting after another man maybe she's actually committed adultery with another man whatever it is he writes her bill divorcement says you get out well she goes and she marries another man I guess what it wasn't adultery nowhere in this passage doesn't say that when she married that other man it was adultery but God says that she can never come back and marry that first man again that's an abomination to God that's something that God hates why is that well what is what someone isn't talking about here as we'll see here in a minute marriage is a type of Christ in the church so one of the reasons that God hates divorce is it breaks the type of salvation Jesus Christ is the head the Bible says what is the head it says in Ephesians that the head is the is the is the unmanned what's he called the husband couldn't think there for a second so when we get saved we who are saved we are what we are the Bride of Christ which is also called the body of Christ well you're one flesh when you're married so we're part of his body and we are in him he is in us so when we get saved Christ becomes our head can we lose our salvation can we tell God one day as believers you know I just don't like you anymore I divorce you well nowhere in the law does the woman have the right to write about writing of divorcement the woman is never able in the Bible to divorce her husband the husband had the right to divorce the life but this is the type of Christ in the church and he said I'll never leave thee nor forsake thee so Christ can never take away salvation from us who are saying last time I went really hard on that people that say you can lose your salvation I've showed many verses and it's hard on how once you're saved you're always safe so a divorce breaks the type of Christ of the church a divorce basically says no Christ can can take away salvation and a woman can lose her salvation a believer can lose his salvation so divorce is something that God hates now in this passage Deuteronomy 24 where Paul is talking about it says that if a woman is unclean well it sounds like the unclean line is this some sort of a sin that she did a sexual sin that then the man can say well I don't want her anymore well that's Old Testament it breaks the type of the Christ in the church but it's still in the Old Testament Paul tells us something different in the New Testament that we'll look at here a minute but go with me if you will to what Jesus says in mark chapter 10 Paul says I write to you that know the law where a few people know the law now base so it's good for us to go back and read the Old Testament to know what it's talking about but we're not under the law we're under grace and man I can't wait to get to it when you get back to Romans chapter 7 I'm gonna read it all over again verses one through four together but I have to deal with this first because of those that twist Romans seven one two three to preach that it says oh if you get divorced and remarried you're an adulterer well that's not what it said in the passage we went back to the the law you're under 24 nowhere in the passage does it say that either so what what is he talking about Mark chapter 10 verses one through nine and he arose from thence he cometh into the coasts of Judea Judea by the farther side of Jordan and the people resort them to him again and as he was want he taught them again and the Pharisees came to him and asked him is it lawful for man to put away his wife tempting him now the Pharisees live by the Old Testament law and they solve it under the law if they found an uncleanness and their wife that they could put a writing of divorcement and sent her away so they're coming to ask Jesus what do you think and they're hoping that Jesus will say something different so they say ha you're not under the law what do they say and he answered and said unto them what did Moses command to you and they said so the first he says well Moses said Moses suffered to write a bill of divorcement and to put her away and jesus answered and said unto them now watch what Jesus says for the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept Jesus Christ says Moses wrote in the law that you can divorce your wife give her a writing of divorcement tell her to leave and he said for the hardness of your heart and that's something Jesus Christ God manifested the flesh says that any man that would divorce his wife is a hard-hearted individual you've got to have an awful hard heart to marry a woman and then have no love for her whatsoever and just send her away so that's pretty much a condemnation of Jesus against putting away your wife why because later Christ would come and Christ says my body those who are saved for my bride in Christ said he would never put her away so you have a type of Christ in the church and watch what else Jesus says for the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept verse 6 but from the beginning of creation God made them male and female and for this cause shall a man leave his father and his mother and cleave to his wife verse 8 and they twain shall be one flesh so then they are no more Twain but one flesh now watch verse 9 what therefore God hath joined together let not man put asunder so when man and a woman come together in holy matrimony and by the way it is only man and woman this is Jesus Christ God saying that I don't care what the Supreme Court says it's not man and man are woman in the Bible according to the creator that made man woman marriage is a man and a woman and they come together and God says let not man put asunder what is he saying do not get divorced now one guy said I don't believe in divorce murder yes but the horse no that's kind of funny of me you make a vow it's till death do us part so when a person divorces themself from their spouse what are they doing they're saying I'm a liar yeah I know I made a vow a long time ago to stay together forever but I'm just a glory sorry lowdown good-for-nothin liar I didn't mean it that's you some people don't like to hear that that's what the Bible is saying that Jesus Christ said do not put asunder what God has joined together no divorce ever for any reason that's what the Bible teaches now verse 10 here in mark chapter 10 and the house his disciples asked him again of the same matter matter verse 11 he saith unto them whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her so Jesus says if I'm a man and I marry a woman and then I you know I don't like her and I divorce her and I go marry another woman I'm an adulterer because in God's eyes I made a vow till death do us part with that woman and so when I go with another woman as far as God is concerned I'm a low-down sorry adulterer and a good-for-nothing liar but once what else he says because he didn't stop there he says whosoever shall put away his wife and marry another committeth adultery against her verse 12 and if a woman shall put away her husband and be married to mother another she committeth adultery verse 13 and they brought you well okay now this is an incomplete statement yet I want to stop right there verse 12 so if a woman does that for woman marries a man and they said you know I don't like him anymore I'm gonna divorce him and she goes and marries another man she is an adulteress and she is sinning against God now this passage of Scripture mark 10 here that I just read is also found in Matthew 2:19 so go to Matthew chapter 19 here they come to Jesus again in verse 3 and the Pharisees say is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause verse 4 he answered and said to them have you not read that which was which made them at the beginning made them male of female and said for this cause shall a man leave father and mother and shall cleave to his wife and the twain shall be one flesh wherefore there are no more Twain but one flesh what therefore God hath joined together let not man put asunder and verse 7 they said to him what did why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement and to put her away verse 8 because he said he saith unto them Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives but from the beginning it was not so and I say unto you whosoever shall put away his wife now watch what Jesus says except it be for fornication and shall marry another committeth adultery and whosoever marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery so it's like this this man John over here marries Mary and John says Mary I don't like you any more he gets a writing of divorcement divorces her and goes marries Sarah well John and Sarah you're a bunch of filthy reprobate adulterers according to the Word of God and that marriage should never have been God says it should not be that way now what if John over here is a good guy living right doing right and I know Mary over here she goes John I don't like you and she runs over here and she marries another man she divorces him she is an adulteress but what is John is he an adulterer no now can John get remarried without being an adulterer or an adulteress well here it says except it be for fornication so when God looks at that woman that married another man he said that's that's adultery she's the adulteress but he can't go get remarried because he's not the one that committed the heinous act he's not the one that did the divorce so then John goes and marries Sarah and guess what he's not an adulterer this is so important to see in the Bible let me show you this this of this is all Old Testament because this is still in the book of Matthew and Mark Luke and John because Matthew Mark Luke and John are still Old Testament until Jesus actually dies let's look at New Testament you know hope I can get to Romans chapter 7 first Corinthians chapter 7 look what it says here starting in verse 10 this is the New Testament this is the command from Paul about what do we do when it comes to marriage in the New Testament we saw in the Old Testament that people could get divorced a man could divorce his wife but Jesus said you're so hard-hearted and wicked if you do that what does that mean hard-hearted that means you don't want the things of God you you're not loving God you do something in the flesh so Jesus says you shouldn't do that if you go get remarried and you're the one that divorced your wife and you get remarried and commit adultery you're an adulterer so what does it say in the New Testament about this in the New Testament prescribed you know 7:10 says and unto the married I command yet not i but the Lord let not the wife depart from her husband a command women do not leave your husbands sadly the majority of divorces in the world today are women divorcing their husbands so the entire world has decided we're going to go against the Old Testament law because in the Old Testament law no woman had a right to divorce her husband it was only the man that can divorce the wife and in the New Testament the command says let not a wife depart from her husband and yet everybody in the world today usually women that divorced her husbands have disobeyed the Word of God but does what's up there it says let not the wife depart from her husband but and if she depart watch this if a woman does leave her husband what does it say let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband and let not the husband put away his wife so women do not divorce your husbands now if you leave your husband like one day you just pack up your bags and say I'm I don't want to be around you right now she must come back to her husband and if she doesn't she must make up her mind I will never ever get married again and so the two are still married they're just separated and then it says and let not the husband put away his wife well under the law that could happen but under the New Testament under Paul no man can ever divorce his wife and no life can never divorce their husband Paul says no never never and then he says but to the receipe guy not the Lord if any brother had the wife that believeth not and she be pleased to dwell with him let him not put her away in the woman which hath an husband that believeth not if he'd be pleased to dwell with her let her not leave him for the unbelieving sake - husband is sanctified by the wife the unbelieving wife is sanctified by a husband elsewhere your children unclean but now are they holy but if the unbelieving depart let him depart a brother or sister is not under bondage in such cases but God hath called us to peace so in the New Testament Paul was talking to believers saved people if Paul says to a saved man and the same woman who have gotten married he says if you're saved man and she's a saved woman I know this is a little crude but maybe this will help you in your mind I'll put a little dress on her save man save woman Paul says you have no right whatsoever to get married according to the Bible why because Pisa factor 5 says the marriage is a type of Christ in the church in Christ is the savior of the body and when we're safe we cannot divorce ourselves from Jesus Christ and grace cannot divorce himself from us so under the New Testament no divorce God wants no divorce whatsoever and in fact in the Old Testament back there in that Malachi even in the Old Testament God said he hated divorce Malachi 2:16 for the Lord the God of Israel say it that he hated putting away the context is a man putting away his wife like the Old Testament law said that I mean it could do he could do it should he do it no but he could now what happens if this guy here saved as she's lost but we just read it if she's lost and she leaves and she divorces her husband he is not under bondage that means he can go marry whoever he wants because the unbelieving woman left now he's free to marry whomsoever he will if she divorces him well if it's an out what if this woman is a good godly Christian woman and her husband's just a low-down sorry reprobate never been saved drunk what if he runs off and divorces her and marry somebody else if she remarries is she an adulteress no in his matter of fact as we continue to read down the errand for sake of time I won't it says that if they remarry then she must only marry in the Lord so new rules under the church age never never divorce God hates divorce under the church age Christians should marry Christians only if someone does marry someone who's not a Christian but they themselves are saved then they need to dwell together with that person but if that person says I won't dwell with a Christian and they run off and divorce them that Christian has every right according to the Bible because he's no longer under bondage to marry another Christian and not be an adulterer now why do I go into this huh I kind of went 25 minutes now on this one little topic just so we can get into Romans chapter 7 it's because of many churches I've met many pastors that say if you've ever been divorced in your Christian you are you can't do anything you can't be a pastor you can't be a deacon you can't do this you can't do that if you've ever been divorced well what if a man's a Christian but before he came became a Christian he married a woman years ago and so he gets saved but she's lost and she says I hate you all you do is talk about Jesus she runs off and marries somebody else can he be a preacher can he be a pastor of course he's not under bondage in such cases she's divorced herself from him so God says he can remarry to a Christian you see the blood of Jesus removes off all the evil he never did anything wrong she's gone does that make sense okay so so there it is in the Bible God hates divorce he does not want men or women to ever get divorced sadly in the wicked world we live today divorce happens is it adultery for a person to remarry well the question is that person that remarries is he a Christian who did the divorcing who was the divorcer who was the divorcee if a man is living right and doing right serving God but he married a woman before he got saved and she runs away divorces had him against remarry Paul said he is not under bondage Paul says he can remarry only in the Lord now there's one more thing to this what if she's a Christian and she leaves well then they're to remain separated and she's supposed to reconcile to her husband so if she leaves him and he says I just can't take it anymore and he divorces her and remarries yeah he's an adulterer it's not something he should do but sometimes there's some rebellious wicked Christian women in the world that there's a guy needs a wife he says Bible is better to marry than to burn and I've known pastors whose wives left them and they said well she's an unbeliever I let her depart she divorced me so I remarried and you know what scripturally they're not adulterers scripturally they're the husband of one wife scripturally they can be a pastor the gifts and callings of God without repentance but any man who divorced his wife to go marry some other woman he can't be a pastor he's living in adultery he should never have divorced because God hates divorce so it all boils down to the heart why did you do it if you get a divorce why did you do it you should never ever divorce anyone if you love Jesus Christ and you love the Bible you should never get divorce so divorce should never be an option for a child of God if it takes place stay unmarried until the other old spouse remarries or dies that's really hard for some people to get but if you're a Christian and your spouse is a Christian and he or she leaves you then you just have to make up in your mind well I will not remarry until they come back and if they die then I can remarry or they divorce me and they marry then I'm not under bondage in such cases if they're lost if they're safe I need to just remain unmarried until the day I die now this passage here in Romans chapter 7 let's go back to Romans chapter 7 doesn't talk about divorce it talks about marriage and death so what I did is I took some time to talk about divorce even though this passage doesn't talk about divorce why because the Catholic Church and other churches run to this passage and say you're an adult or you're an adult or if you do this this and this this passage isn't talking about divorce but that's what they claim so let's look at the passage what does it talk about because the passage talks about what happens when a man and woman are married and the man dies when he dies then she's free to remarry and this is what Paul is telling us so without further ado Romans chapter 7 verse 1 no you're not brother for I speak to them that know the law how that the law hath dominion over a man as long as he liveth so if you are under the law you're under the law in the Old Testament until you die that law has dominion over you in the same way that a man and a woman are married the woman is under the man she's to submit to her husband until they die the marriage vow was and they don't even say it nowadays to love honor and obey so the woman is to obey her husband just as an Old Testament man obeyed the law so over here you obey the law until you die under the marriage the woman is to obey her husband until he dies or until she dies so I'm put until death now a lot of people do they say I don't like that well I don't care that's what the Bible teaches because it's a type of Christ in the church and we the Bride of Christ are supposed you obey Christ it's just that's the Bible if you don't like it then don't follow it and sadly most of the world today says we don't want to follow the Bible it's access to a woman having to 7 to a man well that's what the Bible says wives submit yourselves to your husband's okay that's what the Lord wants just as the husband in the Old Testament submitted to the law well today we men submit to Christ so as men submit to Christ the wife submits to her husband that's how it works now how about the law have dominion over man as long as he live in there verse 2 for the woman which hath an husband is bound by the law to her husband so long as he liveth so she is bound by the law and by her vow to be married to her her husband as long as she lives and that's why the marriage battle was to love honor and obey as long as we both shall live until death do us part it was a law of God that when you got married you never get divorced it's until death that's what marriage is it's getting together until you die when you trust Christ Jesus as your Savior you're saved and you're save until your body dies or until the rapture comes and you get a new glorified body and guess what you're still safe but so says here so long as she live it but if the husband be dead she is loosed from the law her husband so if this woman's husband dies she doesn't have to obey him anymore cuz how can you obey a dead guy so she's free to do what she wishes most of the time she wants to be married she wants a man she wants a protection she wants provide her someone to take care of her and love her so she goes and marries again and there's nothing wrong with the woman remarrying after her husband dies verse 3 so then if while her husband liveth she be married to another man she shall be called an adulteress she can't be married to him and then marry another man at the same time the only way she could marry another man was two things he dies or he's an unbeliever who runs off with another woman in the force her and marries this other woman then she's not under bondage in such a case now but as their husband be dead she is free from the law so that she is no adulteress though she be married to another ring so her husband dies now she can go and marry another one but only another Christian only in the Lord the Bible says according to Paul now watch this verse for Paul is giving this illustration of the marriage relationship and he's about to dump on us something profound at verse 4 and say this marriage relationship is just like the type of law and grace of the law and Christ Jesus the head watch this verse 4 wherefore my brethren ye also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that ye should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God now all of these churches all these denominations all these so-called preachers that try to tell you we're under the law bunk we are dead to the law and the law is dead to us it was like we were married to the law before Jesus came because under the law everyone had to obey the law until death parted them from the law but when Jesus Christ came and shed his blood we are no longer under that law or under Christ it's like we're married to him now if we are married to Christ how on earth could we ever get back under that Old Testament law these people that are preaching know you got to keep the law I got to keep the law today they're trying to make you an adulterer or an adulteress by trying to make you go back and marry somebody else that's what it's saying wherefore my brethren you also have become dead to the law by the body of Christ so the law is dead to us and we are dead to the law Christ is the end of the law Romans 10:4 to all who believe we are no longer under the Old Testament were under the New Testament we're not under the law or under grace we're not married to the law we're married to Christ that's what Paul is saying so how on earth could any denomination exist on the face of this earth and say oh we're Christians we follow Jesus we're Christians and you go to their church service and they tell you you gotta do good work you gotta keep the law you'll go to hell they're nothing but a bunch of spiritual adulterers trying to get you to becoming a spiritual adulterer as well because they're trying to pull you away from your husband to get you under another and yet you're supposed to be dead to that husband it's like you die but he says well all right well then I'm not married to them anymore and it's like it died and you say well I'm not married in it Who am I married to as a Christian I'm part of the Bride of Christ the body of Christ I'm married to this one I cannot marry myself to the law to do so would be to commit spiritual adultery so for again we're for my brother and you also are become dead to the law by the body of Christ that you should be married to another even to him who is raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God so who is him who's married from the dead Christ so Christ Jesus is my Savior he's also my husband in the sense that I'm married because I'm part of the body of Christ in the Bride of Christ and I'm married to him and just as a man and a woman get married to produce fruit I'm supposed to produce fruit unto Christ what is the fruit tell people the gospel and when people get saved well that's more people that become part of the body of Christ more people that become part of the Bride of Christ verse 5 so I hope you understand that don't try to get back under the Old Testament law time and time and time and time again in Paul's ministry he is telling us over and over and over again we do not get the law we don't keep the law to be saved or stay safe the law is dead the law is over laws gone God's not dealing with man through the Old Testament law God deals with man today by grace through faith in the blood of Jesus and Jesus Christ at the end of the law once you get a hold of that and you come to the gospel for salvation life is so good because people that are trying to be under the law are thinking like I do good enough I got to do good enough and they never never ever get any rest cuz they never know if they did good enough but when you trust and you rest in Jesus then you know hey man I'm saved and I know it and I don't have to worry about it because I have a husband that loves me provides for me protects me takes care of me he said I'll never leave you nor forsake you so I'm in him and he's in me and I have peace and forgiveness through the blood of the Cross and I don't need that Old Testament law now doesn't mean I don't read it oh sure I read the Old Testament of time I know what the law says the law is the knowledge of sin I don't want to sin so I read what the law says sin isn't I said I'll bloody stay away from that because I love my husband who gave the law in the first place God Jesus in the Old Testament so back to Romans chapter 7 and there's not really much that I can comment on except you simply read the rest of the chapter and so that's what I'll do so in verse 4 he says we are become dead to the law by the body of Christ Jesus died Jesus was under the law and Jesus died and when he did he showed the law hey I never sinned once and so when Jesus rose again he's and he says new body and everybody to get saved through him and the blood of the Cross as part of the body of Christ so it's a new husband the old one we are dead too and we're dead to the law through Christ and then he says here that we should be married to another even to him Jesus who was raised from the dead that we should bring forth fruit unto God for when we were in the flesh the motions of sin which were by the law did work in our members to bring forth fruit unto death so the Old Testament law brought some fruit what was the firm of the Old Testament law the FIR the Old Testament law was death you work all you can with all these works and do all the works of love and what does it get you you die over here what do you get when you get Christ and you're safe the fruit of that is life you get eternal life and you go out and try to win others to Christ and give them eternal life no it says here in verse 6 but now we are delivered from the law so we are not under the law we are delivered from the law the law does not save us or keep us safe can't be any cleaner that being dead where we wherein we were held that we should serve a newness of spirit and not in the oldest oldest of the letter so we're in the New Testament not in the old verse 7 what shall we say that is the law sin God forbid me I had not known sin but by the law for I had not known lust except the law had said thou shalt not covet so is the law sin no the law is this year's document that tells you this is sin this is sin this is then this is in this is in the law as the document says thou shalt not thou shalt not thou shalt mine it's also a document that says you will do this you will do this you will do this you will keep this feast of Passover you will keep this feast of unleavened bread you will keep it you will do all these things well do we have to keep those laws today none under grace so these things that the law said to do were for juice in the for Christ they had to live in that and do that and it showed them what sin was now he says in verse 8 but sin taking occasion by the commandment rotted me all manner of concupiscence concupiscence means lust or excessive lust for without the law sin was dead for I was alive without the law once but when the commandment came sin revived and I died what did he mean I was like I live without sin well when you're young and you're growing up your age an age of a Cana accountability that's the age when you first realize that you're lost and you first realized that you're going to hell because you're a sinner and that's why I'm in the Old Testament they begin to keep the law and they realize man I've got to do all this that it says so I don't go to hell and so they kept the law and they did what the law said in the hopes of going to heaven well did they go to heaven well when they died under the law they went straight down to Abraham's bosom they didn't even go to heaven was until Christ came that all those in Abraham's bosom were taken to heaven you can't even get to heaven through the law you can only get to heaven through Christ and his blood atonement on the cross so he says sin revived and I died verse 8 verse 10 and the commandment which was ordained to life I found to be unto death so the commandment ordained to life what is the commandment the law the law is a commandment on how to live and you do all that the law says and live by it and guess what the fruit of it is you die and that's something he says there in verse 11 for sin taking occasion by the commandment deceived me and by it slew me sin is what made me die you know what Paul I think is talking about and it's on his mind while he's writing this there wasn't a more dogmatic person that followed the law than Paul says he was zealous of the law he was so zealous of the law that he went around murdering in cold blood Christians who got saved through Jesus Christ and now he's confessing you know by following that law I became so jealous of that law that I sinned because I killed people I stoned him to death but now look at verse 12 he says wherefore the law is holy in the commandment holy and just and good there are some things that the law is in verse 12 the law is called holy in verse 12 the law is called just in verse 12 the law is called good in verse 4 the law is called spiritual in Psalms 19 8 the law is called pure in Galatians 3:24 the law is called the schoolmaster that'll bring us to Christ in Psalms 119 verse 7 it says the law is perfect in James 1:29 says the law is a mirror this Old Testament law was God's commands to man he said this is how you live holy this is how you have just and justice this is how you do good this is what I expect of you then Jesus came fulfilled the law he says now you come through me and what I expect of you I gave Paul and it gives the commandments of Paul one of these days I want to preach a message called the commandments of Paul what Paul tells us to do you know some of the things Paul tells us to do are some of the same things that are written in the Old Testament here but there are some things written in this Old Testament law that are not for us today that do not apply to us today and we cannot keep for example you're not supposed to eat swine under the law after Jesus rose he told Peter Peter kill and eat and he showed him all these different kind of unclean animals invaders no not so Lord I've never read anything unclean and God says kill and eat three times God told him to kill and eat why because under the law they couldn't but under grace weak and so there was a change that some of the things under the law that we couldn't do we can do now we can enjoy a lobster we can eat catfish we can eat bacon there are some things that God allows under grace that he didn't allow under the law I don't have time to go into that but verse 13 was then that which is good made death and to me god forbid but sin that it might appear sin working death in me but that which is good that said by the commandment might become exceeding sinful the law when you lived under it made sense so sinful that it made you feel like dirt when you sinned and so it tried to make sin just horrible so the people would feel bad to sin well the Pharisees claim to be under the law they didn't feel bad about sin at all matter of fact they learned how to make a little religion and force people to do something that they themselves didn't knew that's why Jesus says there are the Pharisees do what they say not what they do because they followed the law outwardly but intimately they were full of covetousness just like he mentions here full of concupiscence full of evil and lusts and envy verse 14 for we know that the law is spiritual but I am carnal sold understand so he's talking about his carnal nature and what he goes into here until the end of the book is the carnal sinful nature now if you remember last time and I wrote it over here in this area how we have three parts we have a body we have a soul we have a spirit when you're saved you become a new creature and God cuts the body away and so this is the new creature and this is us this is this is the part of us that's the purchased possession we that are Christians this is what we are but Paul is going to tell us now about this part and how we're still in this part and how this part still is a sinful wicked flesh and how we have to decide do I want to give into the flesh or give into the spirit so what does he say here well he says 14 verse 14 but I am carnal sold under sin 15 for that which I do I allow not but for what I would that do I not for what I hate that do I so he's got two men fighting the old man and the new man this is the new man the new creature this is the old man so the new man inside always has to fight with the old man outside because the old man outside wants to sin and do wrong and the new man inside says no no no no let's do right and the Christian life is a warfare like we saw in our last last week as we taught through this it's a fight against right and wrong against following the spirit and following the flesh so he continues we're sixteen if then I do that which I would not I consent unto the law that is good what is he saying there that when I do wrong I can sit you know the law is good because the law tells me not to do that the law was a good book to try to show us how to fight the flesh but then he says um 417 now there's no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth in me you know what Paul just said Paul said I don't sin it's not me that sins it's sin that dwells in me that's cents how do you make a statement like that but that sound like a scapegoat doesn't it sound like a double-minded man well I'm carnal I'm sold under sin on the sinner but I'm not a sinner but you're a sinner how can you say it is no more I that I that do it I'm not the one sinning that's the Paul saying the only way you can understand that is by realizing the new man versus the old man the new man does not sin because the Holy Spirit of God cannot sin so you have a eternal never dying soul inside of you that is too real you that lasts for all eternity and it's melded with the Holy Spirit of God that's the new creature and the Holy Spirit is the law of God written in our hearts we don't have to go by this law we have the law of the Spirit written in our hearts and when we do right we we know we're doing right when we do wrong we grieve the Holy Spirit inside of us is like oh it's like we have a law inside of us that we know right from wrong so when Paul says here it is no more I that do it he's saying this doesn't sin the new creature it's sin that dwelleth in me the sin comes from the body of this flesh so it's like you're two people when you're saved you're the new man you're the old man and when you're sin it's not the new man sending the Holy Spirit can't sin it's the old man the flesh that says verse 18 he explains what I just said for I know that in me that is in my flesh the body and well if no good thing for to will is present with me but how to perform that which is good I find not I have through the spirit the will and the want to do right but sometimes I screw up I mess up I sin I give in to the flesh and I'm just saying oh why did I just do that well it wasn't me it was the sin the flesh that did it he says but how the perform that which is good I find not well how do you have you perform which is good and not giving the flash pray read your Bible trust holding God do right grow they grow in grace Peter says a lot but growing Grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ the more you live for God the more you study the Bible and order you memorize scripture the more you tried to do right the easier it becomes to follow the Neuse creature and follow the spirit than the flesh he says here in verse 19 for the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that do I so he's confessing I do wrong sometimes but I want to do right and I'd be right sometimes but I find while I'm doing right this flesh wants to do wrong and yet like we looked at last week there's people say well if you send a few good Saint you lose it so Rudy publish it Nepal loses salvation no now he's never lost his salvation we can't lose our salvation verse some 21 I find then a law that when I would do good evil is present with me so what is the evil that's present with us this sin this body of sin you see the flesh I don't know if I ever told you this before but if you take the word flesh and look at it backwards what do you get a lot of times in English the H is silent so let's just remove that and what do we get self flesh backwards is self if you remove the H is that interesting I mean is that is there something to that well yeah what the flesh desires is self propogation self gratification and so the self only thinks about itself and what it wants and if you're weak spiritually then you give in and it's all about me me me me me what I want what I want what I want and last time we looked at what we're supposed to do as Christians is take that body of flesh and leave it there and say I don't care what you want you can't have it that's why we have to be strong in the spirit so we do not give in to the flesh soul every 19 again for the good that I would I do not but the evil which I would not that do I and if I do that I would not it is no more I that do it but sin that dwelleth and me Paul says it's not me that does it it's the sinful flesh I give in to that does it and he says verse 21 I find that a law that when I would do good and evil is present with me yea yea evils present with us because we live in a sinful evil body so what are we waiting for well we have the redemption of the soul we have salvation of the soul we are waiting for the day of redemption the rapture when we get a glorified body when God changes this evil body of sin to a glorified immortal body so he says here in verse 22 for I delight in the law of God after the inward man Paul does not say I delight in this law and I follow this law he says I delight in the law of God after the inward man what is the Spirit the Bible says the Spirit is a law unto itself the Bible says we have the spirit or the law written on our hearts through the spirit through the Holy Spirit verse 23 but I see another law in my members warring against the law of my mind now this is important in bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members Oh wretched man that I am Who Shall deliver me from the body of this death well that's a question the answer is Jesus is the only one that shall deliver us from the body of his death and he answers that question of verse 25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord so then with the mind I serve the law of God but with the flesh the law of sin twice he mentions mind verse 25 and verse 23 this is what the Bible calls the carnal mind and so part of the body is the mind and when we are in this body and we begin to dwell on the things of this world of the things of wickedness that's when we give in to the flesh the Bible says lust of the eyes you see men are tempted by what they see women are tempted by what they hear and so we have to be careful to not give in to temptation let me find a verse here real quick for you that I want to like it second Corinthians chapter 10 in verse 5 you got a chance to go to 2nd Tim 2nd Corinthians 10:5 because this money this sinful wicked mind of this body is part of the problem because the mind always thinks about evil things and that's why we're told by Paul in 2nd Corinthians 10:5 that we should do this casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ Jesus Christ wants your soul and when you're saved you give your soul to him it's a new creature it's the purchased possession but doesn't stop there you know what else Jesus wants he wants your thoughts you say what a demanding God no not really he's done as demanding as he was over here under the law over here he just says look I just want you to think about me what sort of things are holy whatsoever things are pure whatever things are this and that think on these things and the more you put your thoughts on heavenly things the less you'll sin but the more you in your carnal mind dwell in the carnal things the more easier it is to give in to the sin that the body wants because the body wants the body wants so this brings us to next time chapter 8 of Romans now I want you to remember this before we get to the next time because in chapter 8 and verse 7 he says because the carnal mind is enmity with God so in Chapter 7 he mentions your mind verse 25 he mentions your mind in verse 22 he says there's a war on for your mind well as we read chapter 8 we see him talking about walking in the spirit and walking in the flesh and what we see here is that walking in the spirit is putting your thoughts on Christ and following him and walking in the flesh is thinking carnal wicked thoughts it's the carnal mind and so that's what we all will see as we get to chapter 8 of Romans up there was a lot a lot more things that I could have gone into here in Chapter seven but I took time to start out about the marriage thing in the hopes that this presents clearly the teaching of Paul once again I get emails all the time of people telling me you're wrong we have to keep the law to get saved that's a person that has no understanding of the gospel how to rightly divide the word of truth of salvation and they think they have to keep this law and do good works to get to heaven and they're lost that's a carnal mind oftentimes the carnal mind thinks well because I'm a sinner I have to make up for it so if I do bad well I'm going to go out of my way to do good and do good works and make up for the bad that I do and that's not salvation according to Galatians 2:16 it's not by works that were justified we're justified by Christ when we're saved we begin a battle of the Christian life a battle between the body and the spirit and so next time we'll see how to walk in the spirit so that we fulfill not the lusts of the flesh so many more things I could say but I hope I made it clear to you and hope we see how important it is to realize God hates divorce no divorce the first three chapter three verses of chapter seven are not talking about divorce they don't even mention divorce but since we talk about marriage and since people trying to twist the text and say well you know but let's look at it and we did and we looked at how great it is that when you're safe Jesus Christ cannot divorce you that means he will never take away that gift of salvation when you're saved you're always saved and he said I'll never leave they don't forsake thee and you cannot divorce Jesus Christ and let me finish with them second Timothy I'll go ahead and finish with this verse here I'm meant to give this last time so now is a good time in second Timothy we read through 2nd Timothy chapter on a second Timothy chapter 2 is where I'm going here 2nd Timothy chapter 2 and verse 12 this all ties in with with salvation which is like marriage once you're married there's no divorce you should not get divorced but it says here in 2nd Timothy chapter 2 and verse 11 is a faithful saying for if we'd be dead with him we shall also live with him if we suffer we shall also reign with him now the context here is reigning with Christ rewards in heaven for the rain if we deny him he will also deny us people say see if you deny Jesus Christ than you've lost her salvation well once you go ahead and read the next verse because the context is if we deny him he'll deny us what rain and inheritance rewards the context is rewards in heaven but it says in verse 13 if we believe not yet he abideth faithful he cannot deny himself when you're saved you're in Christ and Christ is in you and even if you deny Christ and say I decided I don't want to be married to you anymore he cannot deny himself you are one with Christ as a man in a woman are one in marriage in salvation we are one with Christ we are in his body and we have Christ in us through the Holy Spirit Christ in you the hope of glory so there it is we'll see you next time on the cloud church as we go through chapter 8 of Romans I hope this has been a blessing to you and once again I just cannot stress how important it is to realize we are not in the law the law does not save us we don't keep the law to be saved we have the Holy Spirit of God we have the law written in our hearts and we do right because we're saved not to get saved or safe safe we are saved that's why we fight the war against the sinful body against the flesh so see you next time with McLeod Church org
