it's a slash malicious compliance time you know I love this subreddit because it makes me feel good there's nothing like standing up to entitlement by doing exactly what the entitled person asked of you because then you can always say well that's what you said you wanted get ready for some satisfying paybacks in this episode of voice he hears malicious compliance this story was called boss is going to keep asking me to work shifts when I take time off how bad I take a permanent vacation this is the story of my former employer I work in the Northeast US and my employer at the time was a very small company boston five employees in a very specific industry when 90% of our work was on construction sites and finding a well qualified person in this very specific industry is a very very hard thing to do my boss was the kind of boss that every employee hates corners were cut every possible way in order to keep overhead costs down on top of that he would constantly over booked on jobs like signing contracts for six projects during the same week knowing full well he only has five employees which would result in the employees often working 14-hour days or more which really sucks when you're on salary no overtime his worst attribute by far was approving time off and then during your time off calling or texting you asking if you'd be willing to work a day or cut your vacation short sometimes he'd even ask you to move your time off to the next week or next month when the workload lightens up hint it never lightened up due to his constant over booking after working at this company for six years I got used to all the aforementioned annoyances but then things changed my son was born in the months leading up to his birth I made it very clear that I would be taking a five week unpaid leave of absence once he arrives the state wherein allows new parents to take up to eight weeks of unpaid leave I told my boss that I know eight weeks would be a huge strain on such a small company so I was willing to take five weeks but those five weeks would be completely off the grid meaning don't call me don't text me if you're going to ask me to do anything work-related the answer will be nerve so don't bother I'm going to be spending time with my family he 100% agreed fast forward to my son's birth he was born on a Friday and after a short stay in the NICU don't worry he's fine was released on Monday when we took him home Tuesday morning yeah the next day I wake up to a missed call an email and three texts all from my boss asking me to call him back as soon as possible for reasons still unknown to me to this day can I call him back and he tells me there's a slight emergency code speak for he screwed up the scheduling and has a job with no employee at it and asked if I could maybe come into work that day and maybe work a couple more days that week until he finds someone to cover it I lost it I literally felt something in my neck snap and unleashed a verbal assault on him that I still feel bad about now a year later I ended my rant with an apology as much of a jerk move it was for him to be calling me in that situation it was still completely unprofessional of me to say what I said to him obviously he wasn't a big fan of what I said and after a small rant of his iron ended with the sentences that made this whole story possible he said you've got a pretty good gig at this company that most people your age would be thankful for I'd be impressed if you can find a better job in this field because I've been doing this for 30 years and I know how small this industry is and trust me good jobs like yours don't come along very often think about that so we ended the call and I did what he said I thought about it after thinking about it for 30 seconds I got out of bed sat down in front of my computer and started looking at job postings five weeks later my time off came to an end and my first day back I came into work walked into my boss's office and handed him a piece of paper more flesh I thought about what you said and about how you'd be really impressed if I could find a better job than the one I have here so I did my boss reads over what I handed him a job offer from a competitor for the exact same job I was performing but at a 25% higher salary an extra week of paid vacation compared to what I had and a stipulation that company policy was that work hours are capped at 8:00 per day meaning that once I hit 8 hours on a job I pack up and leave it until tomorrow no exceptions well then can I have the day to crunch some numbers to come up with a counteroffer no don't bother I just wanted you to see it because I know you wouldn't have believed me otherwise gave my two weeks notice and left for whatever job site I was on that day that was a year ago I could not be happier with my new job I get to spend lots of time with my boy and that's the best job back there is for all you bosses and managers out there don't mess with your employees especially the good ones treat them how you'd want to be treated I think in most places where I've worked even if I really liked the job the thing that really does make the difference is the management and the co-workers as well if you're in good terms with them and everybody gets along it can be really enjoyable sometimes even in a really crappy job but if you have a boss who's never flexible always has unreasonable expectations or just doesn't listen to you he'd just be a nightmare this story was called lady wants coffee from a fresh pot this happened about more than 10 years ago but I consider her one of my finest moments I was working at Tim Hortons Canadian coffee chain as an assistant manager half my shifts were spent in the office the other half in the drive-through relieving employees for breaks it's mid-afternoon and it's pretty slow her van pulls up on the speaker and I answer welcome to Tim Hortons how may I help you hi I want a medium coffee double-double from a fresh part I don't want something that has been sitting there for hours I want a fresh pot it's important to note that she's talking really slowly and really loudly and forceful like she's sure we're all a bunch of high school dropouts who do not know how to make a cup of coffee it's degrading our coffee pots are timed for 20 minutes from the second they stop brewing we had this white chalk pencil thing that would write right on the hot pot so while the lady's repeating her desire for a fresh pot my coworker has already made the coffee from the pot that technically was still dripping fresh pot got it please pull ahead I tell the staff that I'm personally going to handle this as I already know that this isn't going to be the end of her rudeness lady comes up to the window drops her change in my open hair angrily the coins bouncing off each other and nearly winding up in the cement outside I roll my eyes and hand out the coffee as I'm putting the coins into the till I'm watching her out of the corner of my eye she opens the lid smells the coffee takes a tiny sip then excuse me I wanted a fresh pot this coffee has been sitting here for hours no it hasn't my cover can actually pulled the still brewing pot out and poured the coffee from that part you're wrong I know this is old this is not Tim Hortons coffee smell this taste this she passes the cup to her horrified female passenger who does not want to get involved but leans towards the cup and takes a sniff see this is not Tim Hortons coffee I know Tim Hortons coffee you're right ma'am its Robins coffee what do you want us to do Robins doughnuts being our big competitor at the time lady turns to modern red and screaming I wanted my coffee from a fresh pot I stick out my hand grab the coffee back and stop walking around the corner to the front of this door my coworker hands me a new coffee but I reply no I have to find the freshest pot so once I'm around the corner out of you I removed the old lid stick a new lid on the coffee and wait a minute my co-workers are watching what I'm doing and all trying to cover a smirk I return to the window and the coffee out and say here you go the lady opens the lid takes a whiff and a long sip of the exact same coffee and see this is what Tim Hortons coffee should taste like well that coffee came from the exact same pot as the last coffee I gave you her jaw drops and you can see the blood draining from her face she takes another small sip and then no this doesn't taste right does this smell right no I want my money back she hands me the coffee and I hand her back her change and she drives off thankfully she never visited my store again it's almost like some people have a compulsion to make trouble like they thrive and live off the drama I'm sure you know people like this in your life you say the most innocent thing and all of a sudden it's a big deal the more you try and calm it down the worse it gets these are the sort of people they go and order coffee and complain about coffee that's completely fine and how do you know because you pour them coffee from the same pot and now it's magically all better this story was called grandma also got the bank so around 2011 my grandma had a fall and it messed up her leg after about a year of constant infection and other issues she got it amputated because I was 17 and poor my grandma and I had a pretty cool deal I could use her car whenever I needed as long as I drove her to appointments shopping etc I was down because free car and she'd always get me lunch or something so after a few years we go to the bank we went every other week for her to get out cash grandma always wanted to go into the bank and talk to people rather than use the ATM to withdraw no big deal she's old and lonely so I'd wheel her in and we'd wait in line so she can make small talk we get to a teller she knows who greets her as usual grandma knows her name and they do the small talk and we get to the withdrawal I just need your license grandma here you are this was usual she would show at each time sorry grandma we can't accept it's been expired for two years well yeah I can't drive one leg remember have a used it last week in the week before sorry we can't accept it will let me talk to build a manager tell affect his bill who greets grandma they make small talk and then he tells her the same thing I asked if I can withdraw it for her I shared my license same last name I haven't account there true that she had originally helped me to get and her name was on no dice they don't offer any other solutions just know so grandma just smiles and says she'll be back I roll her outside and she apologizes that today will be longer than our usual to our errand trip I didn't have much to do so whatever we go to the DMV same Plaza and spend two hours getting her a temporary ID no photo and we'll back over to the bank we roll in and bill greeter but says he still can't let her withdraw probably assumed she'd try just to get a different teller not a problem since these people treat your grandma a loyal customer for 45 years like crap gave her no warning they were changing policy and offered no help on a solution close your account I'm a bit skeptical but do what she says I only had about $80 in it anyways threatening to close your account won't let us withdraw your grandma's funds not threatening I want to close okay your loss our family won't support a bank that's so impersonal so now I want to close my accounts well we can't without ID well here is this flimsy piece of paper from the DMV no picture that says Who I am bill starts getting nervous apologizes and says he can do the withdrawal but grandma is steadfast into doing it bill has to make a bunch of calls and begs grandma to stay no dice grandma withdraws $50,000 in cash the most they would allow to hand to a person on short notice and has the bank transfer another 400 K or so to her new bank of choice we went there right after the DMV and opened a new account for her and I didn't mention it earlier as it gives it away bill apologized the whole time was trying to get her to stay on offering all sorts of rewards or prefer checking etc grandma made a big scene about it telling everyone that they wouldn't let this poor amputee old lady get out her own money and the competitive bank offers a $100 sign-on bonus for opening an account and everyone should go there instead bill looked like he was passing a kidney stone when he realized she was serious and how much money he just lost to their balance most people don't really know how a monetary system works but we have what's called a fractional reserve banking system which means banks only need to hold 10% of the holdings for the loans that they have out so when the grandma transfers over $400,000 of her money away from the bank that means that's over four million dollars worth of loans that they can't make until they have that many people saving with them so that's why they were pretty desperate to keep grandma with them she probably has a lot more power than she knows this story was called University compliance it's been 5 years since I got my degree and I was reminded today of this moment of petty revenge through compliance brief explanation first in my country university students used to have a student booklet where professors recorded course attendance and exam results my university switched to a digital system shortly after I started so I was in one of the last years to be issued a physical booklet I used my booklet for the first year then there was a transition period where professors would record results both in the booklet and in the online portal and eventually in my final years they moved to the digital only and we were told the booklet was no longer needed now of the story I am about to get my master's degree and I have just barely managed to complete my pieces in time to graduate both my advisers have approved my thesis and signed all the documents I need this was super hard because one of them was hardly ever in his office and I only managed to track him down after exchanging several emails and phone calls explaining how I urgently needed his signature before the deadline he was a good person and a great mentor and I really enjoyed working with him on my thesis but he was one of those absent minded academic types who couldn't grasp the concept of a deadline if it hit him repeatedly with a large stick I finally collected the last signature on a Friday afternoon sprint across town and arrived in the Edmonds office an hour before closing time it was the very last day to submit a request to graduate and you would think that most students would have submitted their requests well in advance to avoid the risk of not graduating until the next semester pay for another year of tuition and so on however quite a few like me had troublesome advisors that forced them to wait until the last possible minute so on that final day there was a bit of a queue but I think to myself I'm fine I'm here with all my documents and stuff I've double and triple checked that I have all the replied signatures and whatnot finally one of the admins calls my number in this story I will call him geo Awl tml DFS which is short for grumpy old admin who like to make life difficult for students now Who am I kidding I will call him grumpy afternoon I'm here to submit a request to graduate this is my documentation I placed my documents and signed thesis on his desk Oh dawn Mitty first I have to check if you passed all your exams otherwise there is no point doing all these paperwork of course my student ideas 2 4 6 so one at this point what he should have done was check my ID in the online system and check that I was marked as past all exams can graduate fYI this has since been automated so that nobody had to check manually but we were still in a transition period of course grumpy decides to not do this online check and instead looks at me like I'm dense I need your student booklet so I can check that you past you against I didn't think to bring my booklet with me my year isn't using booklets anymore we're using the digital system if you check you'll see that I passed all my don't check if you don't give me your booklet but even if I gave you my booklet it doesn't have all my exams because my exams from last year were recorded online only then afterwards I'll check your online booklet good so you can check online now you're not listening to me first you give me your booklet or check your booklet then if it doesn't have all your exams I check online but my booklet does not have all my exams recorded can't you just check online since it's what you have to do anyway they will say you have to give me a booklet first at this point he was getting very red-faced I tried showing him a page I had printed listing all the requirements for submitting a request to graduate which did not mention the booklet at all but instead said basically check online if student passed exams he refused to look at it and instead pointed to an older sheet of paper taped on the wall next to his desk it was a previous version of the list I had from maybe one to two years before and he told me to read it I read out loud the part that said basically student will present booklet and/or online system must show that the student has passed exams grumpy as I'm literally reading the part that contradicts what he's saying say you can't even read you must give me your booklet now otherwise you don't get to graduate stop asking for special treatment if you didn't bring your booklet it's your fault this guy sounds dead serious and for a moment I think he's really going to stop me from graduating my booklet is at home but it's over 1 hour round trip by the time I get back the office will be closed however while grumpy is trying to assume away I see a very very interesting notice taped to the wall you don't have a booklet your request to graduate is denied those are the rules next hold on please there is one more thing I would like to request a replacement booklet notes did have you young people nowadays always Gale it with your possessions back in my time etc etc anyway fill this form and come back in two weeks to get your new booklet me pointing to the sign on the wall it says here that in exceptional circumstances students can get replacement booklets on the same day so what this is an exceptional circumstance because I need my booklet to graduate now you're not graduating me still pointing it says right here for students who need it for an exam or are about to graduate in the next session you haven't lost your booklet you just forgot it you need another one oh but the rules on this old outdated printout from years ago say students must carry their booklet at all times on campus and are responsible for getting a replacement as soon as possible if they lose it I'm just following the rules long story short he issues me a replacement booklet on the spot this took a while on this already busy day as I had to fill a few forms print everything sign and stamp it oh and by the way the booklet came updated with all my info from the online system and guess who had passed all her exams yep me so he very ungraciously hands me the booklet and shows me away for at least tries to thanks it was just one more thing I plopped the booklet on the top of the pile of documents and slide it back towards him I would like to submit a request to graduate now I'm not saying old people can't be unreasonable but I think when it comes to technology especially when it's transitioning there's definitely a hesitation there to migrate or adapt so of course because the old piece of paper taped to the wall says he can't do it or at least his interpretation of it then that's what grumpy's gonna do if you work at a university how could you not know that the most important thing there to a student is to graduate that's the whole reason why they're there if you're an office admin you should be moving heaven and earth to make it happen you just sound like a bitter old dude who didn't really care wanted to make other people's lives miserable because his was probably miserable in some way which is just sad fortunately for our hero she was smarter than grumpy if you'd like your story to be narrated by me don't forget to visit the subreddit pause / Boise here linked below don't forget to like this video and subscribe if you'd like to see more all
