hello everybody my name is Stephen and welcome back to the story town channel without wasting any time let's get into our stories of the day exposed knee equals suspension this was over a decade ago in high school we're all very familiar with some of the ridiculous dress codes that schools have and the poorly thought-out justifications for these rules most of the students and teachers agreed that these rules went a little over-the-top and had a general agreement on what was fine and what wasn't not the vice-principal she seemed to be on a warpath with a dress code this story is about the day that I ended up in her line of fire I had a favorite pair of jeans that I wore constantly I ended up ripping a small hole in the knee it was maybe an inch in diameter so I was honestly shocked she even noticed it but oh boy did she notice it she went on a tirade about how inappropriate it was for me to be showing my skin mind you that students were allowed to wear shorts then went just above the knee and demanding that I change I told her that I didn't bring a change of clothes with me to which she responded that I would be suspended if I didn't change so I told her that I would go to the main office to call my mom and ask her to bring me a new pair of pants we lived right around the corner so it would only take ten minutes tops she seemed unprepared for me to have a resolution other than suspension and finally decided that I had to wait for my mom an in-school suspension I had never been suspended in school or otherwise so I was pretty angry that this is what some me in my mom brought me new pants and I went to my nice class which happened to be art here I formulated an idea I grabbed some masking tape wrote vulgar twice in the largest font I could fit on it and put each one on each knee of my jeans I made sure to show off my new accessories to the assistant principal claiming that I had found a way to ensure that no more holes ripped in my wouldn't show i thought her head might pop off but i hadn't broken any rules so there was nothing she could do she never bothered me about the dress code again have any of you guys ever had any run-ins with dress code rules if so let me know your story in the comments section down below mean old teacher chooses eight random grade seven students to stay after school when it ends for the day in winter way back in the dinosaur age I had two teachers who were violent bullies one in grade two and the other in grade seven my dad talked to my grade two teacher who after the conversation cleaned up her act this story is about a nasty mean old abusive grade 7 teacher the great 7 teacher hereinafter known as mr. M was a part-time substitute who decided to randomly choose 8 of us to stay after school one day no reason was given this was a rural school in a hilly forested area of Western Canada think forestry and logging roads cell phones did not exist in those days landlines did not extend to these remote locations and in 99% still don't the school had a landline but most of us lived in remote areas without landline service I lived in a remote sawmill camp with a radio phone system people trying to reach anyone at camp by phone had to dial a landline number and hope someone answered at the other end who then threw some magical wizardry patched the landline in with the radio phone system and then you hope someone was in the office and camp to pick up the call anyway mr. M left the classroom and told us that we were not allowed to leave the classroom under any circumstances not even to go to the washroom well time went by and we noticed that the school was becoming quieter and quieter by 5:00 p.m. it was so quiet that we thought we were the only ones left we were all concerned about leaving the classroom to try and find mr. M basically because we were terrified of him he had no qualms of taking a pointer stick and smashing it anywhere on our bodies as hard as he could for even imaginary stuff he would kick slap punch and throw whatever he had on hand and whoever he thought had done something wrong even though it was nothing asking a question for clarification on something he was trying to teach would result in immediate and Swift punishment corporal punishment was allowed in those days but I don't think kicking and punching a kid was allowed mr. n didn't care about any rules that he was supposed to follow I digress we all knew that our parents would be worried by now that we weren't on the bus we thought we would be stuck at school overnight some of the kids had parents who didn't have vehicles either well we had a vote and me and one other kid were the lucky ones who picked to see if there was still an adult about we discovered that the only ones left was the principal who taught us in the mornings I'll call him mr. e mr. e was awesome mr. e was beyond shocked when we explained what had happened he asked us a bunch of questions and then we ended up spilling the beans on mr. M who had been abusive to us since day one that horrible man didn't have favorites to be nice to he hated all of us but he certainly had a favor that he liked to pick on the most that's a story for another time mr. e organized rides for everyone and drove some kids who lived the farthest away home himself two of us had parents who picked us up I didn't get home till 8:00 p.m. that day and some of the others didn't get home and so much later mr. e didn't get home until well after midnight I'm not surprised though as you can easily get lost on those logging roads in the backcountry if you've never driven in that area before it's even worse at night with cloud cover or when it's heavily snowing slash raining all of your reference points are obscured we later learned that mr. M was the first teacher out of the school that day and didn't tell a single soul that he kept 8 students behind in school ended at 3 p.m. we also learned that he was abusive to all kids he taught in the school district so we weren't the only ones to suffer at his hands and feet mr. e was a very very unhappy man you learned a lot of gossip when you eavesdrop on the teachers lounge let's just say that the end result was that we never saw mr. M again he had been permanently retired and never taught again thank God he was absolutely the meanest old man I had ever known and should never have been allowed into any classroom man you have a teacher that has anger issues these days where they're constantly yelling or getting upset or dishing out detentions and then you go back a few decades and you see stuff like this pop up where they're literally abusive and being able to get away with it for so long it's saddening to hear him out teacher told me to be silent the rest of class and I did just that cast teacher me principal one day in class I was doing my work when a classmate asked me for help so I started helping him little did I know helping other students was against school policy in my teachers words and she told me to be silent the rest of the day malicious compliance activated the rest of class I was absolutely silent teacher says Oh P can you answer this question I say nothing Oh P please answer the question nothing Oh P you don't want me calling your parents do you nothing okay now you have to go to the principal's office I went to the principal's office and only then broke the no-talking rule the principal says o P why weren't you talking in class today the teacher told me not to principal says Oh P never do something like that again I was given a warning and my teacher was mad at me all year I have other stories from this teacher and I can post them if you want sorry for the bad storytelling English isn't my first language English being your first language or not it seemed perfectly fine to me and I really liked this form of malicious compliance they told you not to do something so you stuck with it and they never caught on that's their fault sexism isn't the best policy kind of a long one but it's some malicious compliance that led to much-needed change in the company thanks for reading years ago I got my first full-time job working as a bank teller it was a job that for the most part I enjoyed especially since it was in a low-income area with a lot of immigrants which meant I got to meet lots of really kind and interesting people I wanted to spend more time working here but the management was just not great both our manager and assistant manager were females that in itself is not a bad thing at all I've since then had multiple female managers that I considered to be some of the greatest leaders I've worked with what was an issue however was the massive stick up their butts there were three tellers working there myself and two other women I'm the only male months into working there I started to realize that there was a serious case of favoritism towards my female co-workers they would get extra days off paid mind you longer breaks they got away with mistakes that would get most tellers fired losing money miss placing deposits and another person's accounts etc and in general just stuff I couldn't ever get away with when it came to me I was the pack horse I was not given any slack when it came to making mistakes and I was always expected to pick up tasks that the other tellers weren't willing to do emptying the coin machine reordering supplies opening and closing the branch processing international currency exchanges dealing with the tough clients you get the picture I brought this up to management and they simply told me they're doing their part why are you complaining about doing your own can't a man handle this cue the malicious compliance in response to this blatant sexism I decided to do what they least expected become the best darn teller they'd ever had I started to maintain all of the branches marketing materials so it looked much more professional I developed our own means of promoting our lending products and became the highest producing loan officer in the company for three months in a row I picked up other tasks that were being neglected in the branch and nobody else knew how to process I even took multiple trainings offered by the company to be able to process more complex products such that account holders from other branches started coming to me at my branch to do business it was an exciting time but hellishly busy my management on the other hand was super happy to take credit for all of my labor communicating to upper management that they had pushed our branch to reach their own lofty goals and had trained us for such that was the straw that broke this camel's back I shopped around and found a part-time position at a marketing firm across town it was intriguing to me and despite being part-time would pay better than what I was currently being paid I forgot to mention I was paid much less than the other two tellers who only started working a couple of months before me I interviewed and got the job I went to my manager and told her that I was quitting that I'd had enough of them taking credit for my work and that their sexism was belittling and hurting the entire team she couldn't believe what I was saying but dismissed it and simply said well fine we're done here leave your keys with my assistant before dropping off my keys I dropped an email to our area VP gluing her in on the sexism and dishonest practices in the branch two weeks later I receive a call from this very manager begging me to come back to train the team on the many different tasks they'd left me to learn and take care of I told her sweetly I'm sorry I'm terribly busy with my new job I'm sure tell her X and Z can take care of all of it for you you've never doubted them before and hung up I heard another week later from a teller I'd worked with at another branch that the area VP had run an investigation into this branch their numbers had plummeted after I left and it was discovered that the manager was not meeting her own lending quotas and the assistant manager had been removing all fees from all the customers accounts and transactions in order to attract them to her to get more business they were both fired and I was free they should have been able to see your worth you know what you're worth you stood up to them you walked away and you proudly watched them sink as they didn't have you to hold them up anymore he told you you could do it a friend of mine shared this gem with me many years ago when he was a small lad of seven or so his classroom had a Boy Scout instructor come in to give a presentation to the students including how to start a fire with sticks the fun starts when the instructor was having some trouble getting this little fire going and my friends started to giggle this prompted the instructor to call him out and ask if he could do any better I sure can sir then why don't you come up here and show us well my friend happened to be from a very outdoorsy hunting fishing family that also did American Revolution re-enacting so he proceeded to pretty much set the table on fire now this was a big no of course and he was taken to the office his father called and the whole tale laid out to said gentleman who looked at his son then looked at the principal instructor and teacher and said simply he told you he could do it apparently he also then took my friend for ice cream just to make it plain what he thought of the matter I can definitely tell that this took place in the past because nowadays I don't think they would ever let anybody take a friend out of school what a demand changes and dither about it sure you'll pay of course I am a web programmer among other things and used to be a consultant at that with a very high-end very expensive agency I once had a client who was incredibly anal about the exact wording on their menu specifically at the time pretty much every website had a section on its main menu that said about us and they wanted to be different and wouldn't have that but had to have that section only not with that name so we got a writer and a graphic artists and a programmer together and we sat down and came up with a new label for that section portraits we told the project manager who told a client and we all went about our lives the client got very agitated about it probably because there was one person there who felt like he had to have his finger in every pie they insisted that they had to decide on a name and the new scope of work their decision would entail what they didn't bother paying attention to was the contract said very clearly that they had to keep paying the entire team or they'd lose us and the moment they asked for any change of scope all work would stop but they to keep paying the entire team full-time so that was the project manager at 300 an hour me at 300 an hour the artist at 200 an hour and the writer at 200 an hour so $1,000 an hour total normally we wouldn't all be working full-time on the project every day and would only bill the client for actual hours worked but the contract was very clear that once they told the project manager there would be a scope change every one billed for 8 hours a day until they decided and all work had to stop until the client either approved us to resume on the old terms or finish negotiating a new contract or fired us so we stopped and build them 8 hours a day we wanted to keep working because there was other stuff we could do but the project manager who I adore insisted they had signed they could deal with the consequences we had to stop work the client was a fortune 500 company who is mega successful they really could afford it meanwhile the client paid $8,000 per day while they thought about it and they thought about it for four days before they announced that on the morning of the fifth day we'd have a teleconference to discuss it on the teleconference we spent perhaps a minute to describe our deliberation process over words give a list of words we had rejected and stayed that we were all in agreement that portraits was the word for the job then the client people started arguing with each other over whether this was the right word isn't this other word better no that's boring well how about this one no that's overused we all sit in our conference room and looked at each other like are they out of their minds and waited as they kept arguing literally an hour later I got word in edgewise and told them that it was no problem to me how long they wanted to argue about it because I got paid either way but this meeting was costing them a thousand dollars an hour in our time plus I don't even know how much for theirs so perhaps it would be to their benefit to just let us use portraits and get on with it the boss at that company who had been very quiet on the call chuckled and told his people to suck it up and give us the approval to go on to be fair he didn't even bark when he got the bill for thirty-three thousand dollars for one word although I expect he probably had to look at it twice to believe it doesn't sound like a bad paying gig to me where do I sign up for this kind of work with that being said that's all the stories we have for today so what I want to know is which of these stories was your personal favorite and why let me know in the comment section down below and thank you
