hey everyone welcome to r slash malicious compliance where people tend to get exactly what they ask for i'm uncle reddit you know i got a story for you you said stop so i stopped a little background i work in a manufacturing facility as part of a separate r d group generally i don't do manufacturing but as some of you may know from my previous posts my manager gets requests for me to do work for the plant from time to time when my machine's utilization is lower than the plants and they need a push open at the end of last year when i was told i had a job from the plant just a small amount of overflow they couldn't handle roughly 13 pieces now for context 13 is like 6 months worth of deliverable product for this particular job one to three a month from us to the customer working in batches of three to four can take up to two weeks of work to get these pieces off my plate multiple machines iterative processing with metrology in between to make sure i'm hitting the tolerances exactly anyway i've had issues in the past with the plant management not being clear on what the expectations are and i've steadily been getting more responsibilities for my own boss as i've grown into my position not to mention we're two weeks out from the christmas holiday shutdown most of the plant will be off for like 10 days and i'll be on vacation not giving a single f about work so to make sure we're all on the same page i call a meeting about the job with the fabrication manager two of the shift supervisors and my boss essentially all the people looking to me to get the job done i have three specific requests before i start the jobs is it the plant management supervisor's responsibility to let me know the due dates for the parts expectation is like we need two for january three for february one for march etc and it's their job to tell me this with proper lead time at least two weeks but ideally more so i can work them into my other duties i have my own responsibilities that have to come first so if they want parts from me they have to give me proper heads up that they need them i don't work for the plan and i really don't have time to check in every week to see if they think they'll need parts in the coming weeks if i don't hear from them the assumption is they're either ahead on their end of the same job and or don't need the parts for me right now so i won't be processing them i spoke to my boss ahead of time about these expectations and he wholeheartedly agreed we're doing them a favor and he has stuff he wants me to do for our milestones everyone agrees in the meeting and the main supervisor said up front we need four for january great i had a couple weeks before christmas and a clean plate so i was able to pump out six parts half the job was done and over with before i left for my vacation so pleased with myself of course i worked until december 23rd and nobody was in the plant to receive the parts but i came back in january feeling like a bad day ready to hand off more than enough to cover them for their due dates through february first day back i'm told the plant cannot accept the parts from me they're backed up and i need to hold them until they can release them to the next team for post-processing until then they're in a holding pattern with no idea when they'll need them cue malicious compliance i flat out say okay but i busted my butt to get these parts that they just had to have by january and i'm not going to turn out more product until they take the stuff i already finished i have my own job to do so now i have seven parts completely untouched well it's mid april and they only took four of the six parts from me like a week ago i haven't touched the other seven in months and nobody has come to me asking when they'll be done or indicating they need them by a specific date i'm going on vacation next week and have a deadline to meet for my department i just got asked by a different shop floor supervisor guy wasn't in the original meeting and i feel bad for him because they sent him my way knowing i wasn't going to have the parts or be willing to comply instantly asking me where the other parts are my response is i have two parts waiting on release to the plant and none of the others are even close to ready before he could even lean on me before he could even try to lean on me to get a few more done i reminded him i don't work for him or the plant i'm completely outside his management structure as a whole and i have my own work to do he'll get his two parts and then we'll have to renegotiate after i come back from my vacation yeah i don't understand why companies will do that or even management within companies they'll push and push and push for production and then when you give them what they asked for they're not ready for it back when i used to work construction i was on a job where i was the cut guy basically i cut all the wood for the job i would cut parts for headers that piece that goes above your doors and windows the jacks those are the pieces that hold those parts up things like that and i would assemble them too i would cut the parts assemble them have them all stacked and ready to go and usually we would do them one floor at a time or one section of a building at a time and i had this foreman just just wanting to beat on me all day we need every part done every part that's on the blueprints okay i was pretty decent at my job i wasn't the best i wasn't perfect but i was pretty good at it so i spent that entire week just running parts right up his backside he had nowhere to store any of them and you know if they get wet they get twisted up and all gnarly looking and uh yep on you i build all the parts done don't want to let me train a replacement before i leave all righty then i used to work as the dedicated inventory guy for a tire and wheel store that dealt on only that big chain all their guys were black not by choice even on the most blistering of days nearly 10 years working there and i was the only one handling their 5 000 to 7 500 tires along with several hundred wheels nuts bolts tire lube replacement parts basically i organized the entire store in terms of what was bought sold and used i received most shipments whether a single tire by fedex or our two times a week shipment of four to eight hundred units not something i knew for a long time but my technical job was listed as a three-person rotating task i did it all myself the manager i worked with for most of those ten years was very happy and supportive of me trying to make sure i was taken care of if i needed help unfortunately the company underwent plenty of bleh changes after the owner of the whole chain died it shifted from a family thing to a profit and micromanagement thing my great manager was stressed and went from great to not so great i won't deny i got pretty upset with a few things from him but it was just a situation didn't favor him ultimately he was transferred to an administrative position to finish out till retirement and we got a new manager and lots of extra salary salesmen i was left on inventory as everyone confirmed i was the only guy for the job that knew anything they tried giving me newbies to learn the ropes but i only got a couple of days with them before they were pulled for more important things eventually they gave up caring and figured i would do inventory for the foreseeable future well the end of 2018 came with me looking for other opportunities it wasn't entirely because of the shift at work but doing a three-person job after 10 years was starting to take its toll on my back i started about 20 and was getting close to 30. i can't deny i was getting kind of scared i would do something irreparable to my back that would stick with me forever pulled equipment i needed to do better without straining myself more made the process of pulling inventory more bureaucratic and lengthy without need for it and would keep trying to limit my time doing things but expect the same results they also kept resisting my plans to reorganize stock because brands don't always need the same amount of space that major brand that did really well three years ago and taking up a thousand times worth of space only takes up 400 now but hey i had this brand that did an overhaul and we used to carry barely 250 for them now we're ordering hundreds of them weekly with the need for 750 units of space so they're stock unable to fit in one place but a huge gap in another i can fill i'm sure some of you can understand you don't just start shoving items from the wrong brand into a gap because there's space there use it as i'm in the final weeks of my lovely tenure there i've been training for the new job for about six weeks i had plenty of warning to replace my position i reminded them that they should find someone i can give the rundown to before it's too late my new management as well as two salesmen i never liked tell me in a very businessy and polite terms just do your job and let us worry about it i tried to be nice about it because while i don't get on well with the salesman except one he was always great and i love my fellow service techs in the back getting dirty on every car through the heat of the summer and getting our legs turned almost blue and working in the freezing snow and slush of the winter i didn't realize that it's really their problem not mine cue the malicious compliance i found a lovely time when all three of my most concerning resistors were away two were on meetings with corporate for two to three days one was on vacation for the rest of the week this was great as it was my last week as well i hauled all kinds of apps that week i reorganized the whole place to my ocd specs i wanted everything to fit i wanted everything perfectly presentable i did it my way and got everything in to note some years especially in peak winter with lots coming in we got so overstocked we couldn't fit everything all at once which also is because of them not letting me deal with it efficiently i took care of that over stock and fit it all in brands were moved and notes left i let all my favorite co-workers who pulled my inventory the most know what's up they adapted instantly because it's really not that hard just remember the salt is in the pantry now not next to the stove i was commended on my effort and thanks for doing that before leaving however i knew what was coming no not from the guys who didn't want my organization methods by not replacing me or at least covering what we've been doing for 10 years well imagine it like giving someone a nice clean well-working car that they'd never maintain because it's always taken care of yeah i started my new job and got paid almost double a couple months in and i start getting calls from former co-workers apparently they never really tried to replace me at all things fell apart tires were shoved into racks with no regard for where they belonged if there was space fill it after three months i heard three long time employees walked out because the lack of organization was killing their bay times for dealing with cars leading to a dominant fall of stressful work environment stuff it took an average of 15 minutes at our store to deal with most things on one car however i was told it was taking that long just to find the units needed after pulling the car in heck sometimes they gave up and tried to huff it to another nearby store to find their tires thinking they had an inventory error obviously that level of delay and inefficiency made the managers angry at those they blamed service techs usually got the heat i wish i could say there was more juicy details about the aftermath but at a certain point all my ears in that store left i feel like that's enough said in and of itself one bit that came about the four or five month mark after i left though one of the managers called me on my personal phone they asked how i was doing and wondered if my new job was working out i was very happy and energetically told them how great i felt in my new job he inquired whether i might be interested in helping out at the store again i declined now i'm not the best at reading people but this person seemed so lost in their tone that i can only guess they had so little luck in finding a replacement for what i did i'm far more appreciated now in my new job the thing that made me feel a little bad but also good-ish is that my formal co-workers agreed that when i left was when things started to get terrible it probably didn't hurt that i was the insatiable goof of the store too who told so many bad puns it can be pretty frustrating stressful and difficult when you're working a job and you know your job inside and out you could use help but you figured out how to make a system work and then people come in and muck it all up good for you for finding another job that paid more and had less stress put me on production destroy a work culture and watch me chill on a couch doing nothing and you can't do anything about it i worked graveyards in a large furniture warehouse pairing furniture for the driver's next day deliveries each prepper was responsible for prepping two bays for delivery to prep the furniture we would unbox all furniture put feet on couches hardware on dressers build dining room chairs and make repairs the culture was to prep your bay and when you finished you helped the next bay and snowballed until everyone was finished and then you would hop on a cherry picker to get the last minute additions or replace damaged furniture [Music] this place decided to implement a production standard you were given an allotted amount for each action down to the nut and bolt if you added up your allotted time and you finished early you got a 10 cent an hour bonus equaling 80 cents a day also this was to prevent you from helping other bays as you earn a lot of time for others work malicious compliance i was efficient and didn't waste many movements i would blast through my bay add up all the allotted time and saw that i finished two hours earlier than i was allotted holy cow rather than turn in my sheet and get 80 cents extra for the day i sat on a comfy couch at the end of my bay and did nothing until my allotted time was up i remember when the manager drove by and said we need you to go help so-and-so in good damages i just looked at my watch then up my beautifully prepped bay and said i'm still prepping my bay put my headphones in and lean back while he looked completely shocked there was nothing they could do is i was still on the clock for my bae i saw it more beneficial to get paid for two hours of doing nothing than 80 cents to work my butt off yeah i don't understand that bonus in quotes structure i mean why would you why would you like give up like you said two hours of pay for an extra 80 cents differential that makes no sense at all okay i'll stop but i did warn you good morning have you ever gotten to the point where you don't care because your employer deserves to fail don't get me wrong i enjoy working with my clients but management's not the best the story so i'm a therapist important factor according to the code of ethics we have to or should inform our clients when we take a long leave of absence and you provide them with a substitute therapist whilst you're gone i informed my employer that i would be taking a medical leave of absence about a month ago to get surgery and that minimum time of leave required will be two months if not more depending on my recovery at first they told me tell your clients to give them the following options xyz i did as requested but the surgery date was shifted by three weeks and now has been confirmed time off given the whole nine yards i was told after the shifted time frame to stop transferring clients until further notice mind you i only work part time three days a week and speak on average to 33 to 42 scheduled clients per week i've been informing my clients about my leave of absence but haven't really been able to provide them with follow-up appointments because i was told to stop transferring and referring to other providers until i'm told otherwise overall my employer has had almost two months to plan my coverage cue malicious compliance we are now three days out until i go on medical leave and my employer gets back to me stating that i should have reminded her that my leave was coming up mind you i sent her an email two weeks ago that she marked as red and that she's struggling to place all of my clients with other providers i kindly showed her the reminder email i had sent her with her response that i should not worry she was left speechless and i'm now finishing my last three days in pieces she's losing her mind have fun whilst i recover from surgery in case somebody asks the recovery is going to suck well opia i hope your surgery goes well or went well i'm not sure how long ago you wrote this but uh yup management's pretty special when they do that kind of stuff to you oh stop referring people okay oh you should have reminded me oh now it's my job to remind you which i did but oh by the way you had noticed two months ago so there's that oh you've made me hourly instead of salary because you're afraid i'll stop selling after i hit my commission cap should have just let me stay home years ago i was an inside sales rep for a simultaneously large and tiny company in a niche market the quotes are because it was at least equally outside sales i just didn't go outside except to smoke i've since quit they had about 50 branches across the country of various sizes the smallest was literally one guy who processed local orders and used hot shots for delivery the largest had about 50 employees i made six for my branch i was literally the first salesman with a background in anything resembling sales that my branch had ever hired it always hired the least socially awkward industry professionals they could prior to me and they'd had their csr doing the selling for over a year until i came on so expectations were high when they hired me we had somewhat heated negotiations over the comp plan it was a 42k base salary plus commission with a 56k ote and 65k cap i asked what i was meant to do after i hit the cap to which they replied continue to do your job as if i wasn't going to have a problem with generating new business for free i said that i was going to need a bonus structure beyond the cap if they wanted me to do any more hunting after that point i made it clear that i'd service my accounts when they called but i wanted to be clear that they were going to be disappointed if they expected me to make outbound calls looking for new business after i had maxed my comp plan and that i'd definitely enjoy the extra time at home with my family over the holidays they said they understood and we went through the onboarding i worked almost exactly 40 hours for almost two months early october through early december before i had jury duty and missed a day my check was about 150 like compared to what it had been so i complained to payroll benefits kicked in at 90 days that's when i found out i was making 21 dollars an hour and was not in fact pulling a salary presumably this was to force me into the office as we didn't have remote access to the local network that logged our hours just the ordering and inventory software i didn't get even a prorated christmas bonus because that counts as benefits and you have to work 90 days to receive those cue malicious compliance i discovered that if i left the house 30 minutes earlier my 80 minute commute would take less than 25 so instead of showing up around 8 30 chilling in my car for a bit so i was working at nine i was there at seven with the warehouse guy sending emails i started working through lunch as i ate at my desk as opposed to burning an hour off campus or in the break room i didn't even realize i was losing an hour a day to lunch i also discovered that if i stayed till 6 30 i'd get home by seven as opposed to leaving a little after five and getting home around 6 30. so i spent an extra 5 hours a week away from home and worked an extra 22 compared to the 35 i was getting paid for before i figured it out with the ot i was clocking north of 2k more than intended every month and oddly enough no one even noticed until the internal auditor verified w2s and noticed that i made significantly more than the branch manager i didn't hit my commission cap until late november so i spent the rest of the year training with the tech and or warehouse guy both stoners they tried to put me on the same salaried comp plan i'd originally agreed to but it was enough of a pay cut to qualify for constructive dismissal so i got to quit and still collect unemployment for a month before i found another gig op i don't know where you're located but i'm pretty sure that's not legal if you all agree to a compensation structure and then all of a sudden your check comes in your hourly i i'd be willing to bet in most places you could fight that but you got a sweet deal nonetheless and you were able to get really good compensation through unemployment when you were done so i guess there's that hey guys if you enjoyed the content would you
