star of  her day she was the first Latin star to be an   egot winner we're going to talk about so much  of the controversies that was around her life   a lot of the Prejudice that she had to face in the  industry and harassment and she is one of the last   remaining golden age of Hollywood starlets that  are still alive and kicking it and she looks good   for her age in her late 80s for those who are not  too familiar with who Rita Moreno was Rita Moreno   was a Trailblazer in the entertainment industry  whose impact on both the Latin community and   Global audiences was nothing short of profound  her talents were multifaceted spamming across   various mediums such as acting singing and dancing  born in Puerto Rico in 1931 Rita Moreno know with   the epitome of a self-made woman who dedicated  her life to breaking down barriers inspiring   others and championing the Latin Community  her rise to fame began when she appeared in   the Broadway production of skydrift when she was  only 13 years old from there Moreno landed a few   supporting roles in feature films before becoming  a household name in a 1961 musical West Side Story   Moreno brought authenticity and depth to the  role of Anita a Puerto Rican immigrant and her   Dynamic performance won her an Academy Award for  best supporting actress Moreno's talents did not   stop there and the following years she continued  to shine winning two Emmy Awards for her work on   stage and television but it was her work in the  electric company a children's television show   that stuck with audiences her zany characters and  Lively performances left an incredible impression   on young viewers for Generations throughout her  illustrious career Rito Moreno has broken down   numerous barriers for Latinos in the communities  additionally Moreno has made a lasting impact on   the Latin Community by serving as a role model and  inspiration to Future Generations she never shies   away from speaking out about the icon and what was some of her hobbies and   diets before we get into the more complex parts  of her life so how does a woman in her late 80s   maintain such Flawless Beauty the answer lies in  her commitment to a healthy lifestyle despite her   busy schedule Moreno always makes time for  exercise she is known to be an avid gym goer   and even takes Pilates classes to keep her body  limber and toned Rita Moreno is a firm believer in   a clean and healthy diet she has been a vegetarian  for over 50 years and attributes her glowing skin   in radiant complexion to the Wholesome foods she  eats her diet is Rich and whole grains fruits and   vegetables which are abundant in antioxidants and  other beneficial nutrients Moreno also focuses on   portion control and limits her intake of keep her busy and  fulfilled she loves to read write poetry and even   take painting classes in her spare time now let's  get into her childhood so Rita Moreno's childhood   story is one of resilience talent and hard work  born on December 11 1931 in Puerto Rico Moreno's   life started amidst cultural richness and economic  turmoil her parents moved the family to the United   States when she was five years old for better  opportunities and although the family's initial   experience in the United States were tumultuous  Moreno never lost her love for her Heritage   which later became her Guiding Light Moreno spent  most of her childhood in the Bronx she attended   local schools in the area including Saint Agnes  School and St James school where she struggled   with reading and writing in English however she  flourished in arts dance and singing which were   her childhood hobbies for Moreno the art served  as an escape from the poverty and you know racial   prejudices that surrounded her she spent long  hours working on her craft and preparing for   auditions all while maintaining good grades in  school she also enjoyed reading books especially   about famous ballerinas like Anna Pavlova and  Tamara tumanova who inspired her to pursue her   dreams Rito Moreno's family also played a crucial  role in shaping her childhood in her Memoir she   wrote about her father's hard-working spirit and  her mother's fiery personality Moreno's family   supported her passion for the Arts which is a rare  gesture considering many immigrant families often   prioritize more practical jobs like the doctors  lawyers you know so her family support boasted   her confidence and prepared her for a successful  career in entertainment and reflecting on her   childhood Moreno has said that her experiences  gave her the ability to empathize with others   in her Memoir Rita Moreno and Memoir she writes we  had nothing and yet we had everything we were poor   but we were proud we were Puerto Rican but we were  American my childhood was a mix of contradictions   but it was also a foundation for the person I  would become Moreno's family members have also   given insight into her childhood and according  to her siblings she was an exceptional Child   full of energy and always eager to participate in  performances one of her brothers referred to her   as the one who never quit a testament to the hard  work and dedication Moreno poured into her craft   in an interview with People magazine her younger  sister Francis said Rita was always the shining   star of our family she was determined talented and  had a heart of gold even when times were tough she   never lost her passion for life end quote now as  far as her career it was a pretty troubled one   she had a pretty troubled history with Hollywood  Moreno's career in Hollywood started at the age   of 13 when a talent scout spotted her singing and  dancing at a nearby dance studio with the help of   her mother Moreno jumped at the opportunity  to pursue a career in entertainment she made   her film debut in 1950 in a movie so young so bad  despite early success Moreno soon discovered that   the industry was fraught with racial Prejudice  and Latina actresses were often relegated to   stereotypical roles despite her undeniable Talent  Moreno faced discrimination as a Puerto Rican in   Hollywood like many minority actors and actresses  she was often given less desirable roles and faced   constant remarks on her ethnic background and one  such instance she recalls being told to darken her   skin and wear tribal clothing to portray a Native  American character Moreno bravely stood up to the   filmmakers and refused to be subjected to such  degrading portrayals and after winning the Oscar   Mourinho thought she would be able to continue  to perform less stereotypical roles but was   disappointed saying I showed them I didn't make  another movie for seven years after winning the   Oscar before West Side Story I was always offered  the stereotypical Latino roles the conchitas and   Lolitas and westerns I was always Barefoot it was  humiliating and embarrassing stuff but I did it   because there was nothing else after West Side  Story it was pretty much the same thing a lot   of gang stories end quote Moreno's displeasure  with Hollywood's limited roles didn't just stop   at racial discrimination she also had to deal  with her agent who took advantage of her as   a teenager in the industry Moreno said she was  violated by her agent sensually if you catch my   drift while she was a teen actor Moreno recalls  her agent forcing her to do movie scenes she   wasn't comfortable with sexually harassing her  and threatening to ruin her career she refused   and despite the hardships Mourinho continued to  work hard leaving no stone unturned to Showcase   her Talent she went from strength to strength  winning the best supporting actress Oscar in 1961   and numerous other awards for her critically  acclaimed performances in The King and I and   the West Side Story Moreno's perseverance and  talent did not go unnoticed her peers including   the likes of Al Pacino and Meryl Streep have  called her a Trailblazer for people of color   in Hollywood she also went on to receive the  presidential medal of freedom from President   Barack Obama who in his speech praised her for  being a role model who embodies the promise of   America but of course in her career there was  some controversy especially on the set of West   Side Story when Westside Story was first released  in 1961 it was held as a groundbreaking Musical   that captured the gritty reality of urban life in  America but for Rita Moreno one of the film stars   The Experience on set was far from glamorous in  her recent interviews Moreno has spoken out about   the Discrimination she faced during the making  of the film one of her biggest grievances was   the use of dark colored makeup to make her and  the other actors playing sharks the Puerto Rican   gang members appear as the same shade Moreno felt  that this was a grossly inaccurate representation   of Puerto Ricans who come in a wide range of skin  tones and that the practice stripped them of their   individuality and dignity but the makeup issue  was only the tip of the iceberg Moreno also faced   blatant rossism from some of the crew members  who made derogatory comments about her ethnicity   and treated her as an inferior she remembers one  incident where a white crew member made a r joke   about Puerto Ricans causing her fellow actors to  burst into tears Mourinho however refused to let   them break her spirit and stood by her convictions  additionally Moreno and the other actors playing   sharks face criticism from fellow Puerto Ricans  who felt that their portrayal of their culture was   inaccurate and offensive and in an interview with  NPR Moreno recounted the experience of filming on   location in Puerto Rico where she and her co-stars  were not allowed to stay in hotels or eat in   restaurants due to their status as Puerto Ricans  Moreno and the other Hispanic actors in West Side   Story were hurt by the casting of Natalie Wood as  Maria because wood is not Hispanic and didn't want   to play Maria in the film she said that wood  didn't make an effort to be friends with the   Hispanic dancers and that she felt uncomfortable  with them despite these challenges Moreno remained   committed to her craft and delivered a stunning  performance as Anita the fiery girlfriend of the   shark leader her portrayal earned her the Academy  Award for best supporting actress making her the   first Latina to win the coveted award on receiving  it she gave an emotional speech thinking the cast   and crew of West Side Story for teaching her  about the importance of dignity and pride in   our heritage end quote Moreno's experience on  the set of West Side Story is a stark reminder   of the deep-seated discrimination and ignorance  that still pervades our society but it is also   a testament to the resilience and courage of a  woman who refused to be silenced or dismissed her   story should Inspire us all to stand up against  Injustice and fight for a world where diversity   is celebrated rather than eroded now as far as  her relationships this is the part that bothered   me the most in doing my research because I just  really wanted her to see her worth and of course   I'm censoring myself for YouTube so there's a lot  I'm not gonna say but I want you guys to read in   between the lines and of course the story does  get go a lot deeper than I am permitted to be on   YouTube Rita Moreno was already an established  star when she met Marlon Brando who was just   beginning his rights to fame she was mesmerized  by his rugged good looks and Charisma they started   dating in 1954 and for several years they were the  epitome of young love however Brando's infidelity   quickly became a thorn in their relationship he  cheated on her not once but multiple times causing   Moreno to spiral into depression and alcoholism  Brando had a reputation for being a womanizer and   Moreno was not his only Conquest she revealed  in her Memoir that she once caught him in bed   with her best friend brendall was also rumored  to have had affairs with other famous actresses   including Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor  who I did videos for both Mourinho said he was   a beautiful man but he was not faithful end  quote Randall has also been vocal about his   relationship with Moreno though his comments have  been far from flattering and his Memoir song some   other taught me he writes that Moreno was a fiery  little dark thing who was terribly possessive he   also accused her of cheating on him with Elvis  Presley according to her Elvis Presley was not   good in bed and she only did it to kind of get  under Marlon Brando's skin and make him jealous   but it's funny because a lot of other women  have said this about Elvis Presley and don't   worry he's on my list for a video also but they  all said that it was just eh it was blah in bed   despite all of this Moreno continued to stand by  Brando's side hoping that he would change however   their relationship became increasingly toxic and  Brando's emotional and physical violations on her   took a Tola Moreno she feared him and there are  fights escalated into dangerous situations Moreno   once revealed in an interview that brendall once  chased her around their home with a loaded weapon   which he then proceeded to shoot out at a window  after that she knew she had to leave for good she   finally freed herself from him and moved on to a  successful career in marriage to Leonard Gordon   whom she remained married to until his passing in  2010 their relationship had several little known   Secrets including Moreno's rumored pregnancy by  Brando and in her Memoir she revealed that she   had a back alley termination of a pregnancy if  you catch my drift okay in the mid-1950s after   she became pregnant by him she revealed in her  Memoir that she became pregnant by Brando and he   arranged for this back you know alley termination  of a pregnancy and the termination did end up   botched he did drive her to the appointment but  he complained the whole time and was very annoyed   that she even had to go through this and she went  home and bled as the fetus passed away inside of   her and she had to be rushed to the hospital to  have it surgically removed where was he nowhere   to be found okay soon after brendo went on to  do a movie and fell in love with his co-star on   Mutiny on the Bounty and ended up marrying this  woman and even though he fell in love and did all   that he still came back to Rita Moreno because  it was like he just knew she wasn't gonna leave   she was always going to be around he returned to  her Moreno who was so heartbroken and depressed   by this as she started going to therapy and her  therapist was saying hey you know it's already not   healthy but the last straw for their relationship  was when Moreno attempted to take her own life by   overdosing on his sleeping pills and fortunately  he found her and they were able to pump out the   pills from her stomach but it's just so sad  to see how you have everything and you know   this jerk you almost lost everything to him and  we talked about Marlon Brando before and how he   behaved with Sophia Loren and other women he was  just always very rough to me in that sense but it   what he put Rita Moreno through was tragic but  it's safe to say that maybe he did have a soft   spot for her karma below your thoughts on that  because in his passing Hollywood historians stated   that he didn't really care much for his movies  to have memorabilia or anything like that so   he didn't have a lot from his movies like his  trophies Etc he didn't keep a lot of trinkets   in his home so when he passed away one of the  only things he kept from Hollywood was a photo   of him and Rita Moreno in their last film together  which he hung up in his office space so it was a   testament to maybe he came to his senses and saw  her as the woman who got away and also Rita Moreno   with her last husband stated that it was kind  of like a daughter and father relationship and   she felt like she didn't have no Freedom you know  so there was many times that she wanted to walk   away from that marriage too but she didn't want to  break her family so her husband the doctor their   first date they were in a Range relationship  from mutual friends and their first date she   had him come to her Broadway performance and at  first he thought he was just meeting this regular   girl for this Rita Moreno Broadway show and he was  shocked to see that it was the Rita Moreno that he   was on a date with so he quickly quit his job as a  doctor and went on to be her full-time manager and   this stayed together for 40 plus years until his  passing and now Rita Moreno says in her 80s that   she is not in no rush to get married she's finally  free okay
