Welcome to /r/History!

This post is getting rather popular, so here is a friendly reminder for people who may not know about our rules.

We ask that your comments contribute and be on topic. One of the most heard complaints about default subreddits is the fact that the comment section has a considerable amount of jokes, puns and other off topic comments, which drown out meaningful discussion. Which is why we ask this, because /r/History is dedicated to knowledge about a certain subject with an emphasis on discussion.

We have a few more rules, which you can see in the sidebar.

Thank you!

Civilisation grew in many places at the same time, and Mesopotamia was one of the very first. In the first episode of this series covering the entirety of Mesopotamian history to the Persians, the dominance of Uruk and the rise of a Greek-style city-state system is discussed.

Ancient history, especially surrounding Mesopotamia, is some of my favorite to read and learn about. Just seeing how civilizations rose and how they functioned is fascinating to me.

They are a great civilization, agricultural and scientific + their Inkidu warrior provides a great bulwark against those deity level invaders

Finally, a god I can get behind.

If you're interested in a short video that really complements the perspective of this time period, check out this short Neil DeGrasse Tyson explanation of how the two "branches of the human race" were separated for at least 10,000 years after the Bering strait melted. What I find fascinating after watching this video is that both of them, independently of each other, began shifting from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle with migration, to settlements and civilizations at the same time. Absolutely fascinating, this seems to have been programmed into the course of our evolution. It's so curious what would have pressured us environmentally or otherwise to separately and simultaneously change like that.

I find the separation of the human species so fascinating because it's truly like twins separated at birth. Identical genomes, go off their separate ways and you get to see how the two developed independently of each other. You could say every region/ethnicity is like this, but these were the only two "categories of humans," or more specifically, the only two genomes, that didn't interbreed. Tyson doesn't put it exactly like that, but he says Columbus sailing the ocean blue and reconnecting the two long lost branches of the human race was the single most important thing to ever happen to us. Had this gone on for hundreds of thousands of years instead of only 10,000-15,000 years ago, we would literally be different species.

Great vid, one tiny point though: what we call shatt al Arab nowadays (where the euphrates and Tigris come together and form a single river) didn't exist back then. That means that Eridu was on the coast! Just a small detail that I like to share with you.
