our first kiss tonight is one of the most talented and famous people in all the world he is a two-time inductee in the rock and roll hall of fame and he's a knight his newest work is a four-song ep it's called change the world it comes out tomorrow please welcome ringo starr [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] wow how are you i'm doing really good thank you and you're right to not shake my hand and give me the elbow because i wouldn't want to be responsible for potentially killing ringo you know it means something different in england what does it mean oh it's not good no it's fun oh it's good okay all right i never know what you guys over in england you have all different things for everything i heard that this means something different yes yes right i'm not going to do it but you do the american if i do it i can do it this is not peace and love to say to people no not not that way this way oh this one yeah something to do with the index finger in america it is really exciting to have you here and i have to say it's not just exciting to me i think this is really interesting so uh one of the gals who works here today told me she's like oh my gosh my dad is so excited and i am very excited and my seven-year-old daughter is very excited that you're here she wakes up her alarm is set for the beatles every morning it plays and that's how she wakes up each day and what an amazing thing that is yeah yeah what what is amazing is that she's seven and she loves the music yeah and every generation get into the beatles music yeah you know why because it's great it is great and it has been great for me to kind of re-live that and go through that process of discovery again yeah because i do think of your music as like up there with um with davinci and with the great works of art throughout history i really do i think the body of work is is miraculous yeah well i'm glad you were great yeah i do agree i love the music myself and you know i'm amazed that you know every generation gets into us and now you know from when we made some of those records on two track and if they would take that's the lower the base they'd always take the bass drum off so there's no bass drum everywhere but the new mastering of all our records now the sound is great and you can hear the drums they put the beat back in there so i love it you are the be you are the beat they'd just be the olds without you i'm the beach yeah you you're a great grandfather right i am yeah so you're if you have a great grant well do you did you uh intro do you ever like with the music how old's your great granddaughter or yeah she's six months oh six months so she's still yet before she's my granddaughter i have a great grandson who is five oh okay cause my eldest son's daughter hold on let me get a pen had had a child so i'm a great grandad now here congratulations says the five-year-old does he know did he go through the is he discovering the music now do you go that's me no it's graham if we just get on and play and hang out together okay all right no i'm more his age actually than this [Laughter] you um you recorded this this is an ep a four your second four tracks of the year four tracks you had four tracks on the other one yeah couldn't you know i had five five tracks in the other you couldn't save up and do one full album well i didn't want to do one of them it's all to do with the pandemic that you know i had two tours booked last year i had two tours booked for this year and i thought i was sitting around being miserable i'm going to go in the studio and make a track or two just do start and then i thought i'm just going to do an ep you can see the end of that you know with an album goes on a little longer yeah and now i don't love it and i made lots of them but i thought i'm just going to make eps i love dps when i was in my early 20s i had a great collection of eps yeah the eps were like uh the four best tracks off somebody's album yeah and now we've gotten to the point where people will just release singer singles and put out one song yeah and then there's a lot of times never an album would i sell a lot of what cassettes do you really i know you put this out in cassette who's buying uh cassettes kids are buying because the kids are buying they got nowhere else to go they have to like backtrack do you still have a cassette player two years ago i threw my cassette plate away you did i'm never gonna need it again last year i had to buy a new one yeah i've done that too i go on ebay the kids love it so you know i talk to universe and i say okay we'll be a cd and and i'd like cassettes and out of the cassettes and the cd of the last ep the cassettes outsold the records really yeah what about eight track you ever think of that well i'm thinking why not what the hell yeah you um you recorded this at your house right yeah i have a studio in the guest house in the guest house and um oh that's interesting to record it actually is it it's a full studio or is it like like what phineas and billy eilish did like just on the bed no no we're a bit more further on than billy hailey's on the bed yeah but it's like garageband that started that and we have this small guest house so in the in the bedroom are two kits of drums an organic set and an electric set okay roland and uh and in the other room like the living room is everything else all the amps and well the amps for the guitars are in the bedroom too but you know all the equipment and the pro tools and and the stacks of stuff we have they're all in the living room do you run that stuff yourself i don't know how you turn it on you don't even do it yeah i don't know i didn't think so i you mentioned to uh rick rubin that you um facetime with paul mccartney i do regularly how often do you guys talk to each other well i was just in england that we actually saw each other physically so you were there with uh olivia harrison yeah father and i nancy and paul and olivia harrison went for dinner to a restaurant yes do people lose their minds when you guys walk in no no i would i would i really would i mean it was very it was cool huh you know the good thing about the mass though you can you know i'm in london or la with the mask on i can go anywhere yeah and so paul and i were laughing how much we because no one took a blind bit of notice of us when we're walking to the restaurants right it's like oh yeah but then you sit down you sit down and take it off and people start losing their minds yeah i don't know if you've seen this but there's a documentary about muhammad ali on um yeah on pbs right now and uh actually there's a you you're in it uh [Music] that's somehow huh that's crazy you know i was so close to knocking him out and he was great though and what was really incredible was you know though we know we're there and we're saying hello and he's sort of acting like the boxer and the power even when he just like didn't touch you but the just the power came right out of his fist you know yeah yeah he was great did you get to spend any time with him or was it just like kind of a phone oh that time we didn't but i'd spend time with him later on you know in clubs or someone's house occasionally we'd all be there wow a great guy yeah yeah yeah i love the man but you have a documentary coming out uh about the beatles so peter jackson we do together this and i am very excited but i know a lot of people are very have you seen the whole thing i've seen six hours you've seen all six hours yeah but it's changed a little since then because this was uh early on in the year okay and uh you know peter jackson who's directing it how great is that um or he's editing it and we found the the crazy part about it is we found 60 odd hours of unused footage from the original documentary crazy yeah what is that you guys were recording an album uh which turned out to be let it be yeah and um uh and they found all this this footage yeah and then he peter jackson puts it together did you give him any did you remember oh i had a lot of talks with peter jackson because i didn't actually like the original one because it was very dark not even dark it was dull and it was all about this argument that john and paul had uh and i kept saying you know when peter took over you know he was in l.a and he came over i was talking to him but there was lots of fun there was lots of joy you know it wasn't only that there was a lot of good music of course but also you know we had a laugh four guys in the room it's either you know it's up or it's down or it's laughter or you know we're acting out whatever and so pizza every time he came into our labors bring his ipod over look what i found now and we're like hysterical you know the people are laughing and playing with each other it's uh you know wow this is better but this is six hours long and two hours a night two hours a night yeah on disney plus and that is going to be something and so you know put something cozy on yeah for sure you um oh you're you're on twitter and i follow you on twitter and i wanted to ask you about um about a tweet in fact it's your first tweet and can we put that up on the screen it says your first tweet was um which unassisted optima going to do a good okay lordy lordy pika benikoff wow my fish treats yeah pizza love ringo my fairest tweets what put it up again [Laughter] can you translate that to us i know that it must have been piece of a piece of love well i don't know what it means my first tweet i must have been very tired [Laughter] um one of the songs you cover on this ep is a rock around the clock i know which is was with the oldie when you were like uh i was in the beatles i was 15. you were 15. and that song came bill haley anyone remember bill haley bill haley in the comments we remember most of was happy days that was the theme song for happiness so it was like anyway so you know i'm sitting there uh steve lukather and joe williams wrote a great song changed the world i i wrote a song with my uh he's a producer engineer and uh and then linda perry wrote me a song you know part of doing these is great because i'm meeting new people i've never met linda i know about it but i've never met her and uh the interesting thing with that i'll get to bill early next is that she did sort of a a trombone vocal solo you know her voice and so we thought man we've got to get a trombone to do this and who'd you call trombone shorty yeah and we asked him would you do this for me he said yeah and uh and he put the trombona and the brass section as well which really built it up so it's great sure but bill haley you know it's a long story i'm trying to shorten because i had my 14th birthday in hospital i was still in hospital it was coming up to my 15th birthday and i didn't want to be there for my 15th and so my mother talked to the doctors i had tb and i was getting better now i'd been there at 11 months and let me uh leave the hospital and so my grandparents took me to this island of england the isle of man and it's a bit like rock and roll always has been like kiss me quick hats and the lads and the girls you know it's just really a cool place and uh and they took me to see uh rock around the clock the movie and you know it opens up and bill goes we're going rock around the clock and the whole audience ripped the cinema apart it was like they just ripped it up and threw it everywhere i said that's rock and roll yeah i thought man you know i just got out of bed after all 11 months and these guys are ripping the place up but this is for me you know so that's uh that's and i was just sitting around and thinking and i don't know you know sometimes thoughts just come up and somehow bill haley came into my head and i thought i'm going to do rock around the clock and we have a great guitarist joe walsh yeah i've heard of him he's your brother-in-law right he's a brother-in-law i like to say he can't say no in the family it's a good it's good to have a talented brother-in-law so there it is i mean that's uh that's this year's model well this is the i tell you what this is the biggest news in cassettes um of the probably the decade ringo starr change the world that comes out tomorrow thank you very much for being here it's great to have you i'll be back with simone miles
