Would you believe that is my old P.E./volleyball coach? He was pretty whacky and socially awkward but was always funny and generally a good guy. Couldn't handle stress really well and the best memory I have of him is when the whole class erupted in laughter when he tried to mimic ovaries in sex ed lol. Coach Charls was one funny guy.

To put that in perspective, the Golden Gate Bridge is 220 feet above water.

Why doesn't the interviewer let him talk?! He was describing how he felt with the dive and the interviewer kept trying to pull the mic away to wrap it up. The diver wasn't rambling, he was describing the situation well but the interviewer was rushing him.

The guy just jumped from 172 feet. I want to hear him talk.

He sounds like Brian Regan. I just kept waiting for a whacky shout.

The judges scores aren't appropriate for the dive. Great rotation and entry. Fuckin impressive from that height.

Why not go one foot higher and beat the world record? Why would you risk your life to merely tie the world record?

back to the competition there is something about the element of risk and danger that excites a crowd and this crowd here at SeaWorld looking up at Rick Charles 24 years of age are fascinated some of them giggle nervously all of them looking straight up 172 feet to see if Ray Charles can come down safely through the air and enter into the water knees very heavily taped forward double somersault emphasises the dive defense to prevent menace this is a girlfriend Linda look at the face she's talking to herself non-stop a couple little smiles a couple nods of confidence look at Rick up there eyes closed meditating what's it gonna feel like what do I have to do right off the top there's Linda praying for him down below he's never done this before he does not know what to expect he's in the air he's in good shape very good he didn't hit well he could he could have hurt himself the guy was gorgeous salad he's a strong fighting is people depart on the entry and I know that there has got to hurt he didn't hesitate once he got in the air his he was a picture of complete concentration came around he viewed the water but right here is where it really gets critical the bottom just fell out of his legs one apart his hands were too aside and he really took a shot Frick Charles is two and a half points at a first place but there must be a great deal of satisfaction and knowing that he is only the second man ever to die from 172 feet Rick what happened up there the dive threw me off I came around and at 130 whatever it was 150 140 feet I'm looking down at the water so I kind of panicked and then I hit the acceleration zone right at about the 100 feet and all of a sudden I was in the water so I really didn't get a chance to tighten up and to enter the water the way I wanted to but fortunately I've been training physically very very hard and I was able to withhold the impact I got you really did take a shot and there is that acceleration factor right in the middle there that just really surprises what's my first time up there and that's what threw me off so fortunately I'm not her dad I'm not I think that's most important but we're glad you got down safely and good luck we'll probably see you next year
