Richard Hammond goes on a road trip in a Tesla Model X

journeys and keep our distance that explains why what follows might look like and then necessary journey hello this is very exciting my wife Mindy and I are traveling up to the latest raikage's of the North West of England from home which is in the southwest moving yeah that's not very exciting but we're doing in a Tesla four legs the cars plotted our route it's about a five mile round trip it's also tells us where and when we need to stop too challenging for how long it's telling me we have to stop the Charlie Richard for 25 minutes now this will be my first ever experience or vertes the sink chart and my first experience of a long distance journey in an electric car it's my first step into anyway I linking them how it goes pulling over now into the services I don't know where are the superchargers it tells me here that there are some I've never done this before I've set it's telling me I stopped for 25 minutes now knowing I was doing this trip I timed myself on an ordinary fuel stop the other day and it took me 10 minutes by the time had stopped paid the fuel oh no they're over there then they had to get over there right we meant to stop recording because I may have to just go down the wrong way okay this is fairly embarrassing not least because my wife is on board with me um I I missed I missed that Tesla superchargers bars talking to you and I'm living the straight through charming routes and services so I'm not gonna see what it advises me to do how they missed that opportunity I'm consuming sound I will say turn round you Muppet no wonder Lord I think it's always gonna turn me around so what I'm gonna do now is drive up to the next exit turn around and drive back to that again right I'm sorry I've done this before car of the future nice pillock of the past yeah thank you turning around by m6n even in our world warm again and on to the m6 North again three miles up over my first Tesla supercharger experience it wasn't the short experience so far was it sometimes it's better when things take long you know I've pulled off I'm concentrating really hard yes take the vehicle charging there's a sign there right follow it just follow me only it's like a return I mean nice this there's no entry except for Hotel Richard you're going to the hotel oh my god you've gone to the hotel no I haven't no right there over there oh there's this one bothers to be are we testing these details woman in and my legs Oh they've reversed it I'm gonna reversing because that's obviously what you do hear a squeak it's the land right I've stopped stop okay I do I so do watch how my door opens automatically ready I didn't use my hands it just did that great very safe that should take 25 minutes which will pass like that coffee crisp look at that it says supercharging I've taken over the filming just for a moment because Mindy doesn't trust me there it is supercharging so for just I don't know let's just in 25 minutes will give us 64 uh no I'm gonna just gonna completely discharged 65-mile if I want another 290 yeah it's already eight months you can see the miles going up as you eight miles any minute now it's gonna say nine miles here's the other things that you're charging car at this is extraordinary another way I'm done this before I know it's gonna be on eleven miles we've gained 11 miles we go get something to eat now okay okay this is where it gets really cool because we stopped for a coffee and the time has taken them to eat by Bellini we probably have added another 30 miles so at the time is taking us to have our cup of coffee and panini and the car has gone back up to 232 miles of range which is more than enough to get to the Lake District and back here again tomorrow morning to charge for the return journey I'm pressing the brake pedal now right that's it unplugged closing a flat thing it's light and I'm wearing sunglasses and the cars on Drive achieved seat belt on put me in said it adopted my driving position not my driving okay have you turned the navigation on yes I would have done yes I have come on top you're spoiling it I usually do these things alone not with you being a critic right I'm gonna call it silent fury oh come on cuz it's everything there's naught to 60 2.7 seconds right what got legal speed but I've got a bad shoulder sorry that straight up to the legal motorway speed 70 miles an hour to undo oh yeah and so we take to the motorway once more on our epic voyage with sufficient electricity to get us there and back to a supercharger to get us home again I'll update you when we complete this journey tales about tremendous success and how excited Mindy has been about the whole process so that's what happened going up to the latest Rick we are now on our way back from the latest street in a new world making what is suddenly a necessary journey to get home the only slight issue is I didn't put car on charts last night I'm new to the world of electrical cars and I am now suffering with building range anxiety it's my fault not the cars after Bowman it's telling us we will arrive at the next supercharger with 1% of battery charge left as a result Mindy is no longer sure about having an electric car I want this thing I adore if I could get it to Penrith and on the supercharger on happy well let's see how that pans out for us shall we I know the world has got enough to be worrying about at the moment I made matters worse for us thing is is the car of the future but I'm not yet the driver some slipstreaming in his truck and if it were a petrol engine it would be actively ironic that's funny you think that's funny that's no fuzzy we're a very very silly man one mile Oh eight miles of range left where's penny imagine if they were roadworks yeah I don't app you see when we're stationary no idling so we're not consuming don't miss the blooming services constantly coming in on a wing and a prayer that was that was range anxiety if I miss this turnoff you die just concentrate Hammond I'm so concentrating it's definitely the right services in them yes it is I indicated so early then like I was getting in there [Music] slow times slow down look for them look for the odd points straight on mortars eCos Tesla Park is over there straight on okay oh I am in such a panic right oh yeah look at all these taste of people no no you're so happy very cool eight miles left I wonder if it's like an heroic thing in Tesla well if you come rolling in with you know minimal power we have to get quite close here ends funny little video during which time the whole world has gone to pot wherever you are whatever you doing if you are able to work from home I hope you can and enjoy it stay safe and be well uncharged your car well in advance you

I mean, there are things to learn that makes your life with a Tesla much better, clearly. But while he is having range anxiety, the car is telling him to slow down to reach the destination. He doesn't say anything about that. It's almost impossible to run out of energy in a Tesla if you know what you are doing.

Pretty sure he 'forgot' to plug it in to make the next day's video more exciting.

Like, "Oh no, my tesla died. Guess I'll just have to order in a personal helicopter to get home."

The bit with the door was fun though. And the fact that even with a gigantic backup camera screen he still used his mirrors and twisted around to see out the back window.

Wasn't this one of the guys of "top gear" that planned an episode where they drive a roadster and "it runs out of battery during the episode" but it was all staged and meant to make tesla look bad?

The one of the three that I can stand - except that time he ruined Mate Rimac's car. They typically embellish and script so much that at times, I wondered if this was also practiced. It looked honest, which is refreshing.

Here's hoping the boss comes around and let's him keep it.
